"No movie in file" error

Hello,
I stopped an export in process (exporting using QT conversion) and now when I try to export again it gives me this error after a few seconds:
No movie on file.
I've tried the following so far from what was found online:
I deleted the rendered files, as part of a susgested solution, and now it doesn't allow me to Render either.
I also,
- Trash prefs
- Ctrs B twice

So after restarting & analyziing it again, I have realized that,
there are 3 clips (FLVs & mp4) that just showcase as while icons and bleeps when you play it.
I tried reconnecting, but on the list it doesn't recognize it as a "video file" but does connect once you select "show all files"
Even after locating it and connecting to it, it just doesn't play it. I think it may have something to do with being flv as the other clips are fine - though some flvs are fine too.
Thanks in advance!

  • No Movie in File Error - hard drive issues

I am editing an extensive project on FCP7 on a 2011 iMac with 3.4GHz i7 and 8GB RAM running OSX Lion 10.7.5. I am using two G-Raid Lacie external drives (4TB each) that are connected via firewire.
Editing has been smooth for many months until...today while I was editing, I got a popup saying my hard drive had crashed. I also experienced some slow playback/freezes in FCP timelines before the hard drive crash. I don't remember the exact text in the popup, but something like "unable to repair disk" or something serious! Indeed, one of the hard drives no longer appeared in the Finder. I quickly saved everything, then shut down the computer and turned off the hard drives. After booting up again, both hard drives successfully appeared and a quick search through the hard drive revealed all contents were still there, thank god. The FCP project file opened up too. However, when I tried to open the main sequences in the project, I got a popup saying "No movie in file" and then "out of memory." I tried troubleshooting reading other tips and deleted all the render files, but that did not work. I tried opening the sequences with the crashed hard drive turned off, and the sequence then did open. I don't know whether I just have some corrupted files on the drive that need to be deleted, or if something with the entire drive is corrupted. My next step is to purchase another drive and transfer files, then test one-by-one to see if/where the corrupted file is located. Any other solutions or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance.

Corrupted QuickTime movies are very difficult to recover. You may have some luck with Digital Rebellion Pro Maintenance Tools:
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/promaintenance/
which contain Corrupt Clip Finder and to help track down corrupt clips and Media Salvage to try and recover the files from the corrupted media.
Don't just by one disk drive, by enough so you can keep complete back up copies of all your media. This is/should be SOP for working on large or consequential projects.

  • Help - ERROR Message: No Movie In File

I am attempting to play a project but it stops at the same spot on the timeline and shows the "No movie in file" error message.
    What does this mean?
So far, I have: done a safe boot and repaired permissions; trashed the FCP preferenses, saved the project under a new name, copied the timeline and moved it to a new sequence.... nothing works. I have even created stills and replaced the video from the timeline hoping to remove a corrupted file.
This project is due Monday and I have yet to encode it to m2v and burn the DVDs. The length of the project is 1h 45m. Other projects of similar length in this series are playing back properly.
I am running FCP Studio on a Dual 2GHz G5 with 4.5 GB RAM on OS 10.3.9
    Any help is appreciated

  • "File error: unknown file" upon movie import

Got a DVD. Extracted the footage with Mac the ripper. Created an mp4 file with Handbrake. It plays fine in Quicktime at 720 by 480 and 23.98 FPS. I've tried importing it into FCP and I get the error, "File error: unknown file". FCP sequence presents are 24 FPS...I've also tried switching it to 23.98 FPS. I've re-encoded the movie in Quicktime to a .mov file with "DV/DVCPRO - NTSC" compression and it still will not import. Any suggestions?

Tried making an AVI in Handbrake. Handbrake just froze everytime and it would never finish.
I should also note that FFMpeg did not like the footage either and would not convert it to a file of any kind.
So I put the DVD into a consumer DVD player and used my Panasonic DVX100B camera to record the footage in VCR mode. The tape turned out fine.
    BUT...
I am trying to capture the footage from another low end Canon camera. Usually there is no problem. However, with this particular footage from this cursed DVD, I get a "general error" when I try to capture the footage in FCP.
No matter what file format or media is used, this footage will not import into FCP. It must be watermarked to not like FCP.
    Any further suggestions???

Cannot move any files into trash to delete them. I get a Trash warning box saying "The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in 'file name' could not be read or written.(Error code - 36)".Macbook has so much data it is almost not working.
I have tried reseting to factory settings by removing battery and holding down the power switch for more than 5 sec but this does nothing.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as I think with so much unwanted data on the desktop and other places the whole os will crash very soon.
    Thanks, Rick

The hard drive may be dying anyway, or the directory damaged because it is so full.  You should never let the hard drive get over 85% full.
    A -36 error is a read/write error.
All you did with the power is reset the SMC.  Does nothing to reset everything to factory settings.
Do you have your original 10.4 installer discs for the MacBook?
    Is your data backed up?

  • "No Movie in File" & GENERAL ERROR messages

    I'm using FCP 6.0.3, QT 7.4.5, Mac OS X 10.4.11
I'm running the OS and FCP from my main internal HD,
The audio files from my second internal drive
The Video Files from an external LaCie FW-800 1.2TB drive
I've been editing this huge project for close to a year now. I was 24hr to completion when this fu&?*&?% problem came up. My job is split into projects each with it's own sequence. I've been working on these sequences regularly without problem. Today I open the 4th project and try to render everything that isn't rendered. When I do, I get this message: "No Movie in File". If I place my playhead over it, some parts show up in the canvas, others don't (I just see the last image that updated on the canvas). If I press play over the un-rendered clip I get "GENERAL ERROR" without any numbers next to the message. All my other projects work fine.
    I tried the following:
    Repaired my disk permissions
Trashing FCP's user data pref files.
Rebuilding the directory on my audio and video scratch disks
I trashed the render files for that sequence
I tried opening a 1 week old back up copy of the sequence (same)
I created a new project with a new sequence and copying my other sequence's content into it.
Nothing has worked so far. I'm looking at a couple of MONTHS of work if I have to re-create this...

I think this will work to find out if there are any offline clips in your sequence. Select the sequence in the browser, choose reconnect and make sure only "offline" clips are enabled.
A few other possibilities: Are you using any graphic files? If so, if they are cmyk, that's the problem. Are you using any reference (non selfcontained quicktimes?). If so, you may have deleted or moved some of the files that are being referenced.
Oh yeah, one thing to try. Select the sequence in the browser (or make the timeline active) and hit command-zero. Change the codec to animation. Everything will need to be rendered, but will the sequence play now? If so, try changing the codec back to it's original state and pray.

Sounds to me like the file is probably corrupt. If you had hard drive corruption or damage, that could easily result in recovered files not being fully intact. If you were trying to recover accidentally deleted files, it's possible they might have been partially overwritten before recovering. There are never any guarantees with file recovery.
Without more information on the circumstances that led you to try recovery, it's hard to give advice on what to try from here. You could always try another file recovery tool, like Data Rescue 3. Just be sure you're taking appropriate precautions when doing recovery. See Recovering deleted files.

  • No Movie in file-Out of memory errors!

I can't open my file! or related autosave files!
    I get :
"no movie in file" and "error: out of memory"
    please help!

I have had a similar kind of message when I've had a file passed between soundtrack or live type back to FCP that has become corrupt. If you are getting a name of a particular file that has no movie, you might want to try deleting it - that may give you an offline message, and it should then allow the project file to open.

  • File Error importing .mov

Here's the background... I'm trying to import a .mov file I've gotten from a friend's wedding DVD. Used Handbrake to convert the wedding DVD to the individual files. The handbrake output was a MPG4. FCP wouldn't import that. So, took the MPG4 to Quicktime and then exported that as a .mov. I get the message...
"File error: 1 file(s) recognized, 0 access deinied, 1 unknown."
What am I doing wrong. Just want to help him re-edit his wedding video.
    Thanks for the help.

it doesnt sound like you are doing anything wrong. can you open the file in quicktime (yes), then you should be able to open it in FCP. I have done the same thing numerous times. In quicktime take the mp4 and export a 'movie to quicktime movie'. settings, uncompressed (10 bit if you can) audio = best (the best settings for both). Make sure your project in final cut matches your qt output and import the footage.

    Hello:
I am very much a novice with Final Cut.  I am trying to import some video files from  my desktop but keep getting an error message that says, "File error  1 file recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown".  The file type is .mov, 35MB, 1920 x 1080, Codec MPEG-2 video linear PCM timecode, color profile HD (1+1+1).  Can someone help?  Thanks, Paul

You can't import MPEG-2 files directly to FCP X.
Can you play this file in Quicktime Player? If so, then you can use the free program MPEG Streamclip to convert this to Quicktime. Use the ProRes codec.

I am getting this error whenever I try to play its file type on my MacBook Pro,"The document “VN622195.WMA” could not be opened. The movie's file format isn't recognized."

The mac has no native way to read .wma files (these are Windows Media Audio files).  Do a search on the internet for playing wma files on a mac.  You will find several links to solution (one is to use flip4mac).

  • Quick time 'this is not a movie file' error message

    PLEASE HELP!
i've recently downloaded some movies off the internet (.avi files) and although all have originally opened and played in quicktime, i am now getting 'this is not a movie file' error messages for all of them. I've had this before and restarting the computer has usually helped - but not this time. I've also tried reinstalling quicktime, as well as installing divx (i get an error message saying this file cannot be opened). for some reason i can't install VLC (some message about not being able to mount).
I've also burnt the files to a cd and tried playing from there (Rather than my external hard drive) but still won't work. The files won't even open up a preview... i really don't understand what could have happened though - i've opened and played all of them when i first downloaded them and they worked just fine!
    i'd appreciate any help.
    cheers

The fact that you cannot even mount one file or install another makes it sound more like an OS problem than a QT problem, though I guess in part some people deserve what they get with pirated movies through torrents. Have you repaired permissions?
The files you cannot even use that are not the videos in question indicate your problems lie elsewhere.
