No mpeg-2 export thru QT

I no longer have the option of exporting mpeg-2 files thru Quicktime.
I have FCP5, DVD4, etc.
Anyone else having this problem?

Peferling... I have a positive update! I went to the area that typically made things die. I noticed it was at the tail end of where I inserted a sequence into another sequence. I also noticed I had three tracks in that section with graphics. So I copied all the tracks from the inserted sequence... then removed the inserted sequence and re-inserted the actual tracks. At this point I no longer had an inserted sequence. I then simplified the three tracks of graphics into one. Re-applied my transitions and did last tweaking. I once again tried exporting as H.264 HD... et voila! It worked! Something must have been breaking it.
For now I'm okay and have been able to export into other formats. I want to thank you so much for your input. Regards, Nelson

ERROR ( 0 :: 42) when trying to setup sound on MPEG-4 export

I got a project with an ac3 file and a YUV 10-bit uncompressed video file that are same lenght on my comp (2;37;04).
When I try to set up the option for sound for a QT MPEG-4 export ; AE crashes with error ( 0 :: 42 )
Any clues as to why? Anyone has has that same bug ?

Any clues as to why?
Cyclic use of the same routines for encoding and decoding at the same time, when those routines are not properly made "safe" in terms of memory management. Or something up with the audio. The smart thing to do as a start would be to convert the AC3 file to a conventional WAV, then try that again.

H.264 vs. MPEG-4 Export Advice

I'm using iMovie09, trying to get the best quality and lowest file size.
I keep getting conflicting advice so I've been runner a couple of tests.
Here are 2 test examples:
5:47 min movie
H.264 (high quality/2400kbps)= 104 MB; 52 min. to export
MPEG4 (best quality/2400kbps)= 102 MB; 10 min. to export
I couldn't tell the difference in the final movie quality.
Why should I go with H.264 if it takes so long...?
4 min movie (both were set at best quality w/ no data rate restriction)
H.264= 21min. at 57mb awesome quality
MP4= 7min. at 67mb very good quality
I guess the longer the movie, the more I like MPEG4.
See how I'm confused...

The text book answer is you get better quality video with smaller file sizes using .264 over standard MPEG-4. The reality is YMMV depending on content, settings, and other factors as you've seen. In my own tests .264 does look better. Sometimes noticeably better, others not nearly as much. Sometimes the file size is much smaller, sometimes not so much. It depends greatly on the content and how many pixels can be tossed by the compression technology.
It's a trade off, as you've seen, as .264 requires a lot of horsepower to do what it does. I'd suggest, since you've been happy with the results of your MPEG-4 exports, that you save yourself the time and go that route.

Sort of... you can set up a render farm using Qmaster so the files are worked on by all of your CPUs... If that's what you are talking about the answer is yes.

Gamma and Exporting thru Quicktime

Apparently, when you export thru Quicktime, it modifies the gamma according to the codec used. How can I have a consistent gamma when importing-exporting UNCOMPRESSED 1920-1080 @23.98 image sequences?

the uploading to .mac usually uses a sorenson codec in a .mov container.
That can be watched on PC just when the free Quicktime Player for Windows is installed. does your friends have done that...?
It tells them they're missing some compressor. Downloading the newest version of QT does not help either. newest version for PC or on your Mac's side?
QT7 offers now the brandnew h.264 compression codec... this isn't supported on the Windows side yet (just experimental/beta)... so using the "latest" is maybe the wrong way...
in the iM export dialog you'll find the option ".avi" (PC container + sorenson codec) try that for a mail (big files!) and your friends should see your movie...
and tell them, they shall buy a Mac, hey, c'mon!
you can offer downloads of your project on .mac, but not as convenient as the "upload to" function. ... but that is another cup of tea......

Premiere CC 2014.1 Blu-ray MPEG 2 export causing error in Sony DVD Architect Pro

I've filed a Bug Report for this but wanted to post here in case it helps anyone else or on the off chance someone can give me a solution / better work around.
Something has changed in the results of a Blu-ray MPEG2 export from Premiere 2014.1 vs those of the previous CC version. The result is that my authoring software of choice, Sony DVD Architect Pro, fails to prepare a disc image giving an error in the final stage of preparation. This workflow has been working fine for 2-3 years.
My work around is to export to original format (mxf / XDCAM EX HQ) and then go back to Media Encoder CC rather than 2014 to produce the Blu-ray MPEG2 file, which works without problem.
Here's a copy paste of my bug report in case anyone with a similar setup has an opportunity to replicate (I'd be very grateful to anyone able to confirm whether its a bug or something specific to me that I might be able to fix).

Export from Premiere 2014.1 directly or via Media Encoder of MPEG 2 1080 50i Blu-ray files causes error in preparation of Blu-ray disc in Sony DVD Architect 5.2.
This error does not occur when using the same Media Encode export preset in the previous version of Premiere Pro CC / Media Encoder.
Steps to reproduce bug:
1. Export Sequence from Premiere
Export, in my case XDCAMEX 1080i HQ, using a media encoder MPEG 2 Blu-ray preset:
Preset Name: HD 1080i 25
Format: MPEG2 Blu-ray
Bitrate Settings: Medium (Target 25Mbps)
2. Create DVD Architect 5.2 project
Set up as single movie Blu-ray project in DVD Architect:
Disc format: Blu-ray Disc
Resolution: 1920*1080
Framerate: 35 interlaced
Choose the file exported from Premiere
3 Prepare Disc
- Select Make Blu-ray Disc
- Click Prepare
- Choose Location of iso
- click next then finish
Result
Around 50% - 60% through the process the following error is displayed:
An error occurred while preparing compilation
Details:
File name: STREAM/00000.m2ts
Status: TSWrapper.dll::CTSWrapper::ProcThreadMain::Failed to read ES file. - The ES file may be shorter than the size described in the MUI file.
Expected results:
A shiny ISO ready to be burnt to disc and sent sent to eager customers.
Its taken me a full day and a half to isolate problem - someone remind me why I fall for the software updates every time?!

There is a known bug in the H.264-Bluray export. I assume it has nothing to do with your issue, but perhaps it will give you something to consider.

It appears due to a malformed xmpses file. It creates a problem on import into Encore, and I think it should do the same upon import into Architect or it would be ignored entirely. The test is to delete the xmpses file and see if that avoids the issue.

Mpeg files exported in FCP aren't readable on PC -PLS HELP!

Hi - I am new to forums but at the end of my tether - help!
My FCP crashed last week and the only option left was to install OS 10 which enabled me to install the latest FCP. The 'update' thing didn't happen for me so I lost everything.
After redoing weeks of work, my plan was to return to my old system - exporting mpeg files in FCP and transferring them to my PC where I use Nero to make menus. This has always worked in the past. However, since updating OS X and FCP, any mpeg files aren't read via VLC on my PC. I have tried a whole array of export options (various codecs - H264/Apple Pro Res) but nothing works. I have tried to open the mpeg files on 2 computers but still no luck. Both computers have updated versions of VLC and Quicktime.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I WAS exporting via 'export file' as I have done in the past. However, I did then try to export a small file via 'master' which seemed to work. I am now exporting my main file via 'master file' and waiting to see if that also works. It is very comforting to know that you have suggested this same way as I am currently enduring the agonising wait! Why would master file work rather than the export options? The export options worked fine before I upgraded, HUGE THANKS again for your reply. I will update soon! :-)

How to report Quicktime bug? MPEG-2 Export no audio

Subject says it all. I did not find any possibility to log a bug for Quicktime. How to do this?
My problem is:
I have MPEG-2 movies from my Sony digital camera. Quicktime plays them without problem. But when I export them to any format, QT exports them without audio. The audio section in the export dialog is grayed out.
Doing the same in MPEG Streamclip works without problem.

MPEG-1 is an obsolete low-res, poor quality format. MPEG-2 (DVD) is a delivery and not an editing format. You can send in 1000 sugegstions and you will never see MPEG-1/2 exporting audio in Quicktime.
They do read the forums and there are people who test and submit feature requests for programs like Quicktime. But this one won't fly, and it has been around for ages here.
The good news is the free MPEG Streamclip is as fast or faster and does batches of these pesky files so use that and forget asking for this feature.

MPEG streamclip export settings

I realize this is not an MPEG streamclip forum, but there is a FCE question embedded in my post somewhere. I'm converting M2T HDV files in MPEG Streamclip to edit in Final Cut Express. I've used several different export options in MPEG Streamclip, but all of them are requiring rendering in FCE. What is an export format in MPEG Streamclip that I can edit natively in FCE?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

When I select export to Quicktime there isn't a 720x480 Anamorphic frame size. There's 854x480 in both the 16:9 and unscaled options, and there's a 720x480 DV-NTSC frame size, but there isn't one that says both. Also, the default compression is Apple Motion JPEG A: I don't see a DV-NTSC codec in the drop down menu for compression. Is there something I'm missing?

MPEG 2 export?

Good evening,
I've been working with FCPHD for a while, however, I just purchased a Lacie DVD burner with Toast 7. I was told that I could burn MPEG 2 format DVDs with the program, however, when I try to export my files as MPEG 2, a window pops up to the effect that I cannot export MPEG 2 files... something to do with DVD Studio Pro (which I had some time ago on the same computer, and is now only a remnant).
What can I do to solve this? Really all I need is to burn a professional quality DVD from FCP. Any suggestions? I'm getting frustrated having to spend so much time to do such a simple task.

Your problem is similar to many being posted recently. First off, you should feel grateful that you have the MPEG export option out of FCP (via Quicktime). Many new users don't have this, as it has been removed from recent versions.
The second part of your problem - having to do with DVD Studio Pro - is a bug in DVD SP that aple is aware of but hasn't resolved yet. There is a new update to DVD SP that came out today which may resolve this issue, but if you aren't using the program, I would go ahead and try to uninstall it. MPEG Streamclip export. Audio not synced.

I have a ReplayTV (similar to Tivo), and use mReplay to download TV shows to my mac. I downloaded a show, and want to edit it. It downloads as quicktime file, but I can't edit the file when I open it in Quicktime. The little edit arrows are not there. So I import it into MPEG Streamclip, edit the clip, and then export it. But the audio is not synced with the video. I've played around with it quite a bit and can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. On the export, the settings I am using are: Export to MPEG-4, Compression is Apple MPEG4 Compressor, frame size is 720 x 480 (DV-NTSC). I've tried limiting the Frame Rate and Data Rate but that doesn't solve the problem. Any ideas on why it's doing this, and how I can solve this problem. Please help. Thanks for your consideration. The reason I have to different computers is because I use one to import and one to edit...I recently switched the import computer to FCX. I am importing 50 minute sermons captured in HD1080i60. When I use FC6, I would import it as HDV. The file would be a .mov When I use FCX, I just figured to do it the same way. Once its done importing, I try to quit FCX and it asks to quit background processes??? Never had this going on in FC 6...so I just stopped the rendering and quit FCX...then when I move the imported file into a project on FC6 everything goes fine until the export when the file fails to sync the audio...the audio is fine at the beginning but after a few special effects...the audio drags....I can alone think it has to do with my importing process...

Help! Mpeg-4 export results in pixelated movie

A friend of mines is a student film maker. He's using a Mac mini and iMovie 4. He has to post a movie on google video and google wants it in Mpeg4 and not as a .mov file, so he exported his movie project in iMovie 4 expert settings as a mpeg4 file. The resulting movie was extremely pixelated.
So what can he do to make his movie have better video quality and less pixelated like it's original form but in mpeg 4 format so he can re-submit it to google video?

720x640 pixel with 8bit color info (here&then...), 30 pics per second....THAT is an amount of data....
to make video files smaller:
* reduce frames per second - 15fps is enough for webusage... (=>reducing half), depending on what you show... 12fps?
* reduce size - making video dramatically smaller, but... really smaller => no more "fullscreen" playback... or, you blow up the small screen with your player => blocky artifacts.... I estimate the video.google screen as 320pics wide.... (reducing file size by 75%)
* reduce audio - many spend not too much brain on that point, full HiFi stereo etc... mono, 22KHz, 11KHz.. do you really need audio on that web video??
* reduce bitrate - in the export options of QTpro/mpeg4 compressor, under "video" you'll find a slider....playaround with that... ok, going under some bitrates, it get's really ugly... you have to try, because bitrate/quality depends much on content of the video....
but, hey, a student has much time to spend................... ;-))))

QTPro 7; No MPEG 2 export available

I reinstaled OS 10.4 (archive & install) but now QT's gone wierd. Wont play Audio Mpeg layer 3, but the BIG prob is when I try to export, no MPEG 2!! Bummer.
Any help?

MPEG-2 export has been depreciated in QT.
The software install that gave you the option to export to MPEG-2 may still work but you may have to re-install it to work with QT 7.
Apple wants you to use Compressor (a part of the high end video editing apps or DVD Studio) to convert to MPEG-2.
If you get no audio from a MPEG-1 file (very old) you may find that the Audio MIDI Setup app (Utilities folder) can fix the problem. Set the default audio output to CD settings (44100Hz) and try the file again.
