No Multiclip Playback option in RT Playback

Sorry to ask yet another multiclip question, but this is quick. I made a multiclip sequence, then dropped the clip into the sequence. When paused, the viewer shows all 4 videos and the canvas shows the one angle selected. But when I play the viewer, it no longer shows the four angles and instead only shows teh highlighted one full screen. I have open sync selected, BUT here's the catch, under the RT dropdown menu, I only have "Play Base Layer Only," "Use Playback Setting," and "Full Quality." I don't have a Multiclip Playback option. Now this isn't a standard multiclip sequence as I used Studio X's suggestion to make a sequence to match the clip settings. Do I need to have a standard, NTSC, HDV, DVCPRO, ect. sequence in order to view a multiclip live? I tried doing a multiclip with 4 DVCPRO HD files, but I didn't do the research ahead of time and my firewire 800 drive cannot supply nearly enough bandwidth to view all four at once.
I hope this is clear enough and thanks,
-Brian

To Studio X- well there was one render file for the project, so I deleted that, but no luck. I also tried making another multicam sequence, and again while the sequence comes out the format of the clips, it still doesn't give a Multiclip Playback option, and I haven't, nor does it want me, to do a render on that sequence.
To loyed256- I'm working off of a G-drive mini via Firewire 800 and that stutters several seconds into the DVCPRO multiclip. What I've done now is gone back to the original 640x360 files, pulled them into FCP, gotten the "these are not optimized for final cut" window, clicked OK, then made those .movs. into a 640x360 multiclip sequence. I just though about this, is it cause they're not optimized for final cut? Now I'm guessing that's the problem, so I'm gonna try to reimport them as diff formats final cut may like.
Thanks so far,
-Brian

  • Multiclip playback settings

I've run into a new issue (for me anyway) with multiclip editing. I'm working with a two-angle multiclip, editing in real time, and everything has been working fine. I walked away from the project, came back later, and suddenly the multiclip angles aren't showing up in the viewer anymore. It only displays the active angle during playback, then shows the multiclip angles when play is paused, or during scrubbing. To my knowledge, I didn't change any settings. Multiclip playback is enabled in the timeline, Playhead sync is set to open...What am I missing?

All I can suggest is that you close the project, relaunch FCP, and go through the multi setup one more time, step by step.

  • Optimizing clips for multiclip playback

I'm stretching the limits of my hardware and attempting a 9-camera multiclip edit (in the multiclip 9-up view).
    Original footage is [email protected]
I've downmixed audio to stereo at 48KHz/24bit
The format of my final edit is TBD but meanwhile to create an EDL I'm happy to work in clip sizes that will allow the 3x3 multiclip playback (assuming it's possible on my hardware)
I'm sure there are many ways of approaching this but I have a relatively straightforward question:
What's the best clip format to use for optimal multiclip playback speed (I dont need audio)?
Forget about output format ... I just need to be able to see the individual clips in the multiclip view at, say a certain minimum resolution (remember my max of 640x480 anyway) and playback in realtime for editing.
I suspect I may also need some creativity here, eg: some clips internal; some external?

bogiesan: Well, without going into great details I need multiclip enough that I just spent several days trying to work out how to do it ... and it seems to be working with my humble ("toy") setup.
Regarding toys: all our machines will be toys next year.
The setup: (specs and requirements as above) ... I converted all clips to *Photo JPEG* at 320x240 resulting in file sizes about twice the original but a reasonable data rate (about 700K/s <= FW400 can easily deal with this) and moderate decode requirements. The encode was also pretty efficient with Compressor. I made the 9UP multiclip and put it in a _sequence set to NTSC DV (3:2)_ at 29.97fps. Everything plays smoothly in RT and I can do normal RT multiclip editing. Finally!
I couldn't get any other setup to work: MPEG1; certainly not DV due to data (and decode?) rate; in a rash move I even tried uncompressed 8-bit splitting files across the external FW400 and internal SATA but it couldn't deal (only talking 320x240).
Any comments before I put this to bed?

  • After render multiclip playback in Viewer full screen

I double clicked and loaded a multiclip into the Viewer from the Browser. Then I did an overwrite edit of the multiclip into the timeline. There are just two cameras, using four-up display in the Viewer. Then I did the cuts the way I liked them. Then I applied color correction to one of the clips. It played back in realtime and the corrections showed up in the canvas and everything played back in the Viewer in the four-up view. However, after I rendered the sequence, the clips that had the color correction applied appear full screen in the Viewer Window on playback and the ones with no correction (or any other filter) appear in the four-up display in the Viewer on playback. Is there a way to get the color correction to be applied and rendered and still have the clip play with the other one in four-up in the Viewer? Or should I have done the color correction to both clips before I even created the multiclip?
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Have you tried collapsing the clips in the multi-clip sequence?
    My workflow goes like this...
Edit my multi-clip sequence completely, then with my cuts the way I want them, I 'collapse' the clips and apply my color correction to each clip.
If I find I need to change a shot, I can 'un-collapse' that shot (which then shows 4up in viewer aggin), make my shot changes, then collapse and check/change color correction.
I believe there is an 'option-click' function that enables color correcting within an uncollapsed multiclip, but I'm not at that system and am unable to confirm right now.
Don't know if that helps, but I think the collapse/un-collapse route may be part of the issue.

  • Multiclip Playback Dropped Frames

I am MultiClip editing 3 ProRes streams and getting the dreaded "RT....Dropped Frames" message every 5-10 seconds. Have followed the standard protocol (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11226192) for this and problem continues.
    Details:
-24" iMac 4GB Ram w/ plenty of HD space
-Clips were logged/transferred onto iMac HD (no external)
-Completed 2.5 hour multiclip last week, 3 streams, with only a handful of dropped frames issues
-Current project has been tried on 2 identical iMacs and a new fully loaded MacBook Pro and the issue is the same on all 3 machines.
Have read Shane Ross post/response at:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11226192
Questions for Shane and Other Experts:
Is it likely that because my iMac HD is Journaled, I should be using an external?
Is this problem a playback issue or a capture issue?
What do you advise? Please help!
    Thanks!
    S. Brown

    Shane's rule #1
    1) Do not capture to your main system drive.
That drive has enough to do just operating the OS and FCP...then you expect it to perpetually read 3 streams of media?
It may work for awhile, but as you're finding out, things eventually bog down.
    Get an external.
Journaling may slow things very slightly, but you should have your system drive journaled...(but not necessary on an external)
It's only a capture issue if your media format doesn't match your sequence settings. This sounds like a throughput issue.

  • Speeding up Multiclip playback?

Hi, thanks in advance for advice you may have!
Playing Multiclips on 2 different Macs. Only 2 camera. 1080p (1920) ProRes 422 HQ.
On 1 system, set to RT Dynamic, Dynamic, Unlimited, but still get preview render green line, although seq settings are the same. Even when not dropping as multiclip.
On other (laptop) stops every 10 seconds with the same specs.
Is there any way to allow this to play more smoothly and not require rendering?
    Thanks!

RT playback is almost always determined by your disk throughput. An esata RAID 0 should give you no problems. What are you using?
fwiw, unless your footage started out as 2K or Film, using ProRes HQ is overkill. If you started with HDV, ProResLT would work just fine at a fraction of the hard drive throughput requirements.

  • Dropped frames on multiclip playback - possible solution

so I've got a project with 2 streams of 1080 30p material and fcp is constantly dropping frames when I try and do a "live switch."  Playing the material off an external glyph drive connected via Esata.  Tried connecting via fw800.  Same problem.  Also have the same material on another external glyph.  Same problem.
Tried booting off an alternate startup drive.  No problem.
restarted off my primary startup drive.  Went to system preferences:  accounts:  log in items,  Found an item there called "simbl.osax"
Did some googling and found that it was probably installed by some third party app.  Deleted it.  Problem gone.
I hope this helps someone else.  Installing apps that install this kind of thing without warning you is a constant danger.

3 drives in RAID 0 on the Xserve RAID is likely not sufficient for 3 uncompressed SD streams. In fact, it's almost certainly insufficient.
I also can't imagine that you're striping the 3x500 RAID 0 with the 3x250 GB RAID 0, as it would give you less space than just using the 3x500 RAID 0 on its own

  • Multicam Edit playback: One Angle only in Viewer

    Hello
I just shot a theater play with 3 cameras, managed to do a multicam edit thanks to the great walkthroughs there is on internet. So I now finished a rough cut, and I want to review the whole thing from the beginning.
Now for some reason, when I play the cut, my Viewer only shows the active angle and not the multiclip. It will show me the 3 angles only if I pause.
Is there some setting I missed?
    Here are my settings
    RT:
Unlimited RT / Dynamic Playback Video quality and frame rate / Multiclip playback
    Thanks in advance
    Cheers

Genius. I was having this same problem...thanks!

  • Multicam playback problems

    Hello -
I'm having a SERIOUS problem playing back my multicam edited project -- I need to make changes asap, and when I play it back, it starts to go 'glitchy', then skips and jumps and stops playing completely! I've got the RT set to 'Unlimited'; 'Dynamic'; and 'Multiclip Playback'. I also emptied my Trash and have 103 GB left (out of 250), and when I just played it last week, it was absolutley running fine, with less space! How on earth can I get to play back 'normal', so I can finish editing this project? Any help would be appreciated - thanks so much!

    Hello --
No, I haven't changed the speed of the clips' playback.
About setting up a new sequence, I have 12 separate sequences, so that means I would have to sync up again, and put back in timeline, starting over - is that what you're saying? This is 1 hr. 20 min. project, I would hate to start it all over again.
Also, before, I had collapsed and uncollapsed and it worked fine, and now with it having to render, someone suggested that my computer might be running low on RAM? Is there a way to check how much is left? Under System Profiler, it says 1 GB of memory and L2 Cache 512 KB.
I will try trashing FCP preferences, thanks!

  • Multiclip with different aspect ratio

I'm noticing that when I try to do a multiclip with a movie format that involves a different aspect ratio than DV I lose the ability to view live multiclip angles. I've tried several formats and it doesn't appear to be codec related. If the aspect ratio of the sequence is 4:3 or 16:9(natively, not anamorphically), the options from the RT menu disappear including the "Multiclip playback" option, and even without putting it into a sequence it won't play back in the Viewer.
I'm making offline JPEG versions of some HD footage which is 16:9, and I guess I can just make anamorphic versions to work with, but that seems highly unnecessary. Am I reading this problem correctly and if so is there any reason for it or is it a bug?

I'm multiclipping 4 angles, they're photo jpeg movies as made by Compressor's JPEG 75 NTSC setting but resized to 640x360 with square pixels. The material is located on an external firewire drive. From the same source I'm still able to play 6 or 7 standard-def NTSC DV files as multiclip angles just fine.

  • How get multiclips to stay in viewer when playing/editing in timeline?

I just started editing in multiclip. I can get my 3 multiclip clips to show in the Viewer on a 4-up display, but when I play the Timeline, the Viewer jumps to full frame active view. I've set the RT at Multiclip Playback, set the Open option on the Playhead Sync menu, and set Multi-clip 4-up Display. What am I doing wrong or missing?
How can I get the multiclips 4-up display to stay in the Viewer when I play the Timeline?
    Thanks,
    Duncan
    Mac Pro Mac OS X (10.4.10) 2 750 HDs, 1 500 HD, 1 1T HD

There are 2 things to check.
    1. Has your timeline been rendered? I ask this because I was given a 3 camera multiclip project from another editor here, and with all of my settings checked, I still couldn't get the multiclips to show on my external when playing back. Once playback was stopped or the playhead scrubbed, then the 4-up display would return. Just for kicks, I cleared his render cache and bingo, 4-up returned on playback.
    2. In the View menu, is "Show Multiclip Angles" checked? (It's at the very bottom of the menu).

  • DVCPRO HD 3 stream multiclip - computer too slow, offline edit? How?

Of all my woes trying to get this project edited, I finally figured out solutions for a few problems I was having (preventing me from starting the edit). Now, let's assume I have everything ready...
I have 3 angles, all DVCPRO HD. When I multiclip and place in timeline, keep getting dropped frames on playback.
I've tried reducing RT as low as quarter framerate and low playback quality but I still get mixed results.
Is there a way I can do an offline edit using multiclips then online the footage once my cuts are complete? How?
    Thanks!
    Oh duh - 17" Intel iMac (1st gen of Intels) 1.83Ghz, 2GB RAM, 1TB GRAID2, FCP 6.0.2

    FANTASTIC.
    Great, quick article.
    Let's give it a try...
    AAHHHH! It works! Ha!
Ok (and I know you read a thousand threads every day), as noted in another post of mine, I have the nightmare of transcoding other footage taken from different cameras (at different resolutions and different compression [both hdv, one is 720p ftg, other is 1080i])
The DVCPRO HD is native 59.94
When I recompress for offline, I get the warning dialog about framerate of preset to be used mismatching footage I've selected. The new project/sequence will be set to OfflineRT HD (Photo JPEG) 29.97 The media I'm about to recompress, again, is 59.94 The offline clips retain the 59.94 framerate.
Edit into sequence, prompt to change sequence settings to match clip settings. I edited the clip and 3 stream (!!) multiclip into the offline sequence with the sequence set to 29.97 or 59.94 I see no noticeable difference in the look of the footage. I don't have an external monitor to test with but I imagine it wouldn't make a difference.
So what's my point? Oh, uhh, yeah. So the other two "footages"...Before I begin the edit, what should they be transcoded to? My guess:
-Transcode HDV footage to DVCPRO HD 720p60 in Compressor
    -Results in 59.94
-Put the entire "online" media into master project
-Offline all footage for realtime project
    -Edit offline in 59.94 timeline
-Did I mention the purpose of transcoding to match DVCPRO HD is so I can multiclip?
    -Complete edit in offline project
    -Online it.
    A few notes...
-I don't have HDV to test w...oops, wait, I do. And, how convenient, it's 1080i! Nonetheless, I just did the Compress routine with some SD footage, looked like hairy sh...you know. But hey, that's what you'd expect. Mainly, you can see atrocious field separation especially on motion. Either way...
Just converted the 1080i ftg to DVCPRO HD and from master to transcode, they look very similar. There is a SLIGHT blur on the transcoded ftg but it will suffice (it'll have to)
-I offlined the transcoded 1080i-720p, looks like garbage but who cares? It's visible and plays back RT! Errr...when it's on its own in the timeline. Multiclip'd this ftg with 2 other DVCPRO HD offlined and, once in timeline, multiclip isn't playing back at all. Canvas shows the video, viewer doesn't. Each time playhead is stopped, viewer updates with current frames of each multiclip element. Yes, sync is set to open.
Also, canvas doesn't update when cut to alternate angle, continues showing the previous footage AND IT DOES register the cuts but canvas doesn't update. UGH.
-Restarting FCP. That didn't do it. The RT popup also doesn't give an option for multiclip playback. So...ahhh sugar. Found it.
-The sequence needed to be set to 29.97, not 59.94
-Now the question is, how will this affect the online? What will I online back to? Huuuuuhhhhh.....
Well, I did it anyway and set it all back how it was, the sequence framerate is 29.97 - Nothing looks off or weird after a render. HOWEVER...
-Does this mean I am doing it right?? Should the online be 59.94?
OK, I think I've babbled enough. Very close!!! Much closer than before, very helpful, thank you!

  • No RT drop down menu in sequence with multiclip??

    No RT settings in Multiclip??
Hi, I'm using an iMac8,1, 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, Mac OS X 10.5.8 with FCP 7.0.2. I shot a live music performance with some VERY low end cameras...just a Sony Cybershot in movie mode: 1280x720, 29.97 frame rate, and a Canon in movie mode: 640x480 (VGA), 30 frame rate, and an iphone 640x480, 17 frame rate.
I've converted my files in Compressor. I've tried a few different Codecs listed in my Easy Setup such as Apple ProRes 422 (regular, LT, and Proxy) and the Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC). I make the sizes all VGA and make my frame rates all 30. When I put them in my multiclip viewer, there are no RT settings in my sequence; the RT drop down menu on my timeline has no option to select for multiclip playback. All it says is " Play base layer only, use playback seetings, or full quality. I did select multiclip playback in my sequence settings menu but still no luck. I see my 3 angles, I have open selected in my viewer and I'm playing from the timeline.
Can anyone help? (By the way, this is my first week video editing)... next time I'll try to use 2 of the same cameras!!!

    Greetings.
Where is your source media located? Internal Drive? External Drive?
Since you're able to make a Multiclip, it sounds like you've encoded your sources properly. However, I'm a bit confused by your terminology.
When I put them in my multiclip viewer, there are no RT settings in my sequence
Can you clarify this statement? How are you creating your multiclip? I've never encountered an issue with RT settings not being selectable. You may need to trash your FCP preferences. There's a free utility that you can download that will help you with that. Preference Manager

  • Multiclip Editing-The Viewer

Sorry if this has been addressed in previous topics.
I am editing a multiclip in the Timeline. The big problem I can't seem to resolve is that my Viewer will not show 4-up when I play and edit the Timeline. The Canvas and Viewer each display the identical clip. When I pause or stop, the Viewer will then show the 4 up. I have changed the playhead sync to "Open" and also enabled Multiclip Playback in the Timeline RT pop-up as indicated in the tutorials, but this does not solve the problem.
    Could sure use some suggestions.
    rgr

I too have had this very frustrating problem, and have repeatedly made sure that sync was open, played around with different playback options - in other words taken all the logical steps, read through the manual many times, etc. The especially frustrating part is that this is in sequences that previously worked - i.e., the sequence was playing correctly with "3 up", or 3 cameras showing in the viewer - and then for no apparent reason, only one camera (the active one) would show.
The only thing that worked for me, after much experimentation with starting new projects, new sequences, and even reloading the Final Cut software, was to change my user settings on the G5, and log in as a new user. What I ended up doing was logging out under my administrator account and creating a new account, then opening my Final Cut project in my new account on the G5 - and it seems to have worked. Possibly something got corrupt in my user settings; I don't know.
It's a terribly inelegant solution, and I would welcome some other thoughts for a better option. In the meantime, if this helps anyone as a "work-around" if you're banging your head against the wall as I was on this problem, then great.
As an Avid editor for many years, when the system started doing something quirky like this I would have trashed my Avid user settings and logged into Media Composer as a different user. Since Final Cut doesn't ask for a User name when you open the software, as Avid does, it seems like changing your user settings at the G5 is sort of the next best thing. Ideally there should be a way to correct User corruptions from within the Final Cut environment. If such a method exists, I am not aware of it.

  • Multiclip Problems

Hey, I'm trying to get the hang of the multiclip editing and have run into a problem.  When I try to turn on the multiclip playback in the RT menu in the timeline when I work with my .mov format my only options are: Play Base Layer Only, Use Playback Settings, and Full Quality.  In Help it says I should see a long list of things, which I don't unless I switch to .avi format (my movie isn't in .avi format, it's a different clip from something else, so it's not an option to just use the .avi format). What is the problem?  When I go into the System Settings, I can check or uncheck the Multiclip Playback option, but either way the angles in my viewer don't play in real time.

Your footage needs to be converted to FCP codecs... ProRes, DV, DV50, DVCPRO HD...one of the formats you see in the EASY SETUPS.  If it isn't, you wont' get any RT options...and definately NO Multiclip playback.
