No music via optic cable if tv if off

I have the AppleTV2 linked with HDMI to the TV and optic cable to the amplifier.
I must swich the TV on for the sound to go through to the amplifier. Then, I can switch the TV (all I want is music).
This is stupid, because gaving an iDevice with an AppleTV2 should be enough to control music to the amplifier without switchig the TV on.
Please help

Have you tried this?
1. Unplug your Apple TV, Optical Cable and HDMI Cable
2. Plug in your Optical Cable
3. Plug in your Apple TV
4. Let the Apple TV initialize
5. Plug in your HDMI

My apple TV is connected to a DTV with an HDMI cable and to my Yamaha receiver via optic cable. We rented a movie on Apple TV and.found that the movie played, but we only got audio for music tracks. Voice tracks were silent using both TV and receiver.  This only occurred on the rented video and on recorded shows on my cable DVR. previews and other content on Apple TV are fine. Any ideas??

Previews and trailers do not contain 5.1 audio.
If you have recently moved your setup, you may have inadvertently changed some of the settings on your receiver. It certainly sounds as though it is unable to play the 5.1 audio from the Apple TV.

  • Connecting apple tv to a receiver via optical cable

I connected my apple TV via a digital optical cable to the yamaha receiver RX-V477,but I have not figure out how to hear the music that is coming from the apple tv. Can you help me with the set-up in the yamaha receiver. Thanks

    Hey mgrossi,
The Apple TV's optical digital-audio port, also known as as TOSLINK, carries both audio and video signal when used with the proper cable. See this article for reference -

  • 5.1 Dolby Digital via optical cable in Mac Pro?

    Hello!
I'm planning to get a new Mac Pro and I wanted to know if a Dolby Digital or DTS encoder is included to have 5.1 output with the optical TosLink cables.
I need this to connect the Mac with my 5.1 surround sound system because I wanted to watch DVDs using it.
If it only supports stereo sound in the standard version, do you have any recommendations to expand it to get the described feature?
    Thanks for answers.

Hook up the toslink, set the output to digital in System Preferences>Sound, set the input on your 5.1 receiver and match the surround sound format in both the DVD movie sound prefs and the receiver.
    That's it.
Remember to set the speakers in the correct positions from your sitting point or it won't work very well.
To test the surround sound I suggest the movie Castaway, where Tom Hanks is picking up Fedex boxes from the surf line. You'll hear the waves crash on the left, Tom walking towards you and coconuts falling on the right.
The toslink and a good receiver also makes your rips and iTMS songs sound great too.
Check out the Volume Logic iTunes plug-in as well, really makes the music sound great.

  • Dolby Digtal via optical cable not work

Have an Audigy 4, recently bought a Digital I/O module as some searching lead me to believe that the Audigy 4 can do dolby decoding... (thinking about getting a PS3 and hooking it up to my monitor) Well, i've been testing with my PS2 and a DVD. With dolby off in the options menu I get stereo sound just fine, the moment I turn Dolby Digital on I get no sound whatsoever. The DVD i'm using to test got both Dolby Digital and DTS audio tracks and I made sure to select the dolby one.
anyone have a clue what's going on?

So creative lied then... Just lovely. the audigy 4 is supposed to have HARDWARE Dolby Digital...

  • Music Import via optical connector

    Hi,
I tried to get the old music stuff from my minidisc player imported via optical cable, because I wanted to keep the songs separated in multiple files. However using the optical connection the entire minidisc is imported as one single entire "song" (file). Okay with audacity I can separate the files manually but this a quite poor solution. Any ideas?
    Thank you!

  • Optical cable is in-volume control greyed out

    Hi,
I just wondered if it possible (when using external speakers via optical cable)to control the volume by using the volume control (on the top right of screen)
-my slider is greyed out and the only way I can adjust the volume is within an application itself.
    kindest,becca

You're welcome! I think they were trying to make it easier by having a single volume level leaving your Mac and adjusting it only on one device. If you turn down the volume on the Mac and turn it up on the stereo, things could get really loud later when you switch your stereo to the radio!

When you're connecting 2 digital devices via a digital audio cable you need to make sure they are running off the same clock, otherwise you will suffer from something called jitter. Jitter can manifest itself in a number of ways depending on its severity. Because both the devices you are using have good stable clocks you're not hearing it most of the time. But when their clocks do slip out of sync with each other a number of bits are getting read at the wrong value, which causes a click in your audio.
What you need to do is make both devices use the same clock. Since the 003 is the interface Logic uses I would suggest you use this as the master. You need to set the 8pre's clock source as ADAT. I've posted a screenshot below from our 2408 config. I don't know how similar they are but I hope it helps.
I would also make sure you always turn the 003 on first as many devices will automatically revert to their internal clock if they can't read one from the source you've set. I'd double-check the clock source the first couple of times you turn everything on.
    Good luck with it.
And yes fer, of course the 003 transmits clock. Any digital audio connector transmits clock inherently. Receiving devices uses a phase locked loop to sync to it. I cannot believe your original response to this post went on about drivers. If a post about 2 digitally connected devices causing clicks does not scream jitter at you then you don't know half as much as you think you do. Please stop posting advice on things you know nothing about.

Just select the option to make your AirPort Express join an existing network in the setup process

  • Help with 5.1 Audio Out via TosLink Optical Cable

My Mac mini is connected a Vizio 5.1 sound bar with a TosLink optical cable. In the Sound preference pane, the name of the device for sound output is "Digital Out". However, when I go into Audio Midi Setup, the Built-In Output shows "0 in/2 out", and if I click the Configure Speakers button, I only have the option to choose "Stereo" from the Multichannel pull-down menu (regardless of the Format I choose).
Why doesn't my Mac mini recognize my sound bar as a surround sound-capable device and send it a 5.1 audio signal?

I'm not sure I completely understand the solution described in your link, but I followed the instructions and it did not solve my problem. I think one issue is that I'm not given the option in the Format pull-down menu to select anything other than 2-channel audio.

  • Stream music via Airport Express vs. Apple TV

I purchased some Vanatoo Powered Speakers (amazing speakers) with Digital Audio in and was planning on streaming music from my iphones, iPad, mac, etc... via Airplay. I purchased an Airport Express and plugged it to the Speakers with an optical cable.
I have a network with an Airport Extreme and good signal, however, whatever the channel I selected, the music keeps dropping out every now and then during playback. I wanted to see if the problem would also occur with my Apple TV. I plugged it to the speakers and the problem was GONE! The Apple TV works much better and no dropped signal! Now I need to replace my Airport Express with an Apple TV! I don't understand why Apple cannot fix the problem of Airplay playback on Airport Express!

I have a same problem using the Airport Express to my DAC, but Apple TV is doing without any drop out.
I don't know the reason, but there is a suggestion in audiophile to install a 3rd party software, e.g. Audiravana plus, which allows the music to go to memory (RAM) and a slightly delay to play.
You can download for a free trail, only purchase if it helps.

  • Streaming Apple Lossless Music via Aiport Express

I'd like to rip my cd collection to my desktop and then stream it to another room via the Airport Express. I'd like to store the music in Apple Lossless. My question is does the streamed music get compressed lower than Apple Lossless in order to stream to the Airport Express that will be attatched to my stereo?

Jazzman (that's funny since I am a professional Jazz
    musician...:-)),
since I use iTunes and AirPort Express I have
upgraded my stereo system way up. I'm using a DENON
AV Receiver and Klipsch Reference RF-7 loudspeakers.
The AAC 128 kb/s file sound is awesome!! As a
by-product of the psycho-acoustic compression the
sound is warmer and wider than the original; a little
like vinyl albums (if you have a good turntable). I
have made a lot of blindfold tests among friends
playing iTunes over AE with optical cable connected,
an average CD player and a very good DVD player (just
using it as an audio player). iTunes always sounded
    best - with AAC 128 kb/s streaming!
I would even go so far and recommend the compression,
since it gives you a more natural sound than the
original. I know it sounds odd, but that's the way it
is. AAC compression is invented by Dolby
Laboratories, one of the most renowned professional
    studio suppliers.
    Best regards

Roman, I'm old enough to remember the great sound of LP's on an AR turntable using Shure III cartridge and Koss Pro4a headphones driven by a Pioneer Integrated Amp. I have to give it a try again with the ACC 128 as opposed to lossless.
I'll add one more thing the iPod does sound great with a headphone amplifier driving Sennheiser 600/650's. I'm using a Emmeline SR-71, and a Headroom Headcase Bag by Headroom. No, I don't work for these companies. I just thought those seeking the ultimate in mobile sound might be interested.

  • Switching audio outputs when using optical cables

I have an optical cable out to my main home stereo for listening to music. Sometimes I only want to use the iMac's internal speakers instead of the home stereo. Unfortunately, the System preferences does not seem to allow me to change output sources via the software. The only way that I can find to switch outputs is to physically unplug the optical cable. Given the reported frailty of optical cables, I would rather not have to do this. Is there a way to allow a software change from external to internal speakers without unplugging the cable?
Thanks for any help that you can offer!

Does not seem to be any software control of multiple outputs. Just have to unplug the output for the internal speakers to come back to life.

  • Apple TV (atv) no sound via optical or analog BUT sound through HDMI

    Hi all,
This is my first post into the forums. I spent some time searching for problems with Apple TV audio and as a result I think I already know the answer to my question, but would appreciate a second opinion.
My Apple TV is about 1.5 years old (no AppleCare) and has been working fine up until last week. I am using two audio connections:
    1) HDMI to the TV (with tiny speakers)
    2) digital optical out to the receiver (with bigger speakers... receiver has no HDMI input)
We've been watching videos (youtube, etc) through the TV speakers (over HDMI) for a while, because we we had to keep things very quiet in our apartment. Then one day we wanted to watch a movie, so we turned on the receiver... to the overwhelming sound of silence.
Rebooted repeatedly times, pulled the power cord out, let it cool off, etc etc. Tried a restart via the diagnostic menu... still no output over optical. I tried analog... no sound there, either. I swapped out RCA cables for the analog connections, tested it with a CD player so I know that the cables are good, and the ports on the receiver are good.
So after all that troubleshooting, audio works over HDMI, but not optical or analog.
Then I pulled out the digital optical cord and looked into the port. Sounds silly, but usually there's a red light on when the ATV is on, right? (or for any device with digital optical connections, for that matter). There was no light. I looked at the end of the optical cable, which was still hooked up to my receiver. The tip of the cable was definitely lit up.
So... my guess is that somewhere within the logic board, there's some sort of component failure on the optical/analog outputs. Has anyone had this happen to them?
    Now, regarding options:
I read one post in the forum that says the repair cost is approx 2/3 the cost of a new unit... ATV retails on the Apple web site for $229, which pegs the repair price at approx $151. Does that sound right to others? Having taken a look at the teardown guides, I'm sure this will be a "replace the logic board" repair, which will probably be one of the most expensive options.
    Thanks very much!

    Cubehead wrote:
I have the same exact setup as you. Fortunately for me, mine works well. I can't speak to the ATV replacement option, but I do have a suggestion. On my Denon receiver, I have to assign the optical input from the ATV to the receiver (it does not happen automatically).
Good advice...but I'd assumed they'd had it working successfully before.
This may sound simplistic, but just checking to see if you ever went through that process. Also, just curious to see if this setup ever worked for you. In reading your post, it sounds like this is the first time you had ever used your receiver with the ATV.

  • Samsung Fascinate, problems with playing music via USB port on car stereo

Before the update, I could play the music files on my Fascinate via the USB port on my Kenwood stereo, and control basic functions such as skip, pause etc.  Now, my stereo does not recognize the device, and cannot read the files.  I went to local Verizon store where a sales rep tried to connect it in here new Kia Soul and it didn't recognize the device either. It will play via the AUX jack, but I lose player control and the phone does not charge via the AUX cable.  She did a hard reset which did not resolve the problem.  We tried one of the other employee's Fascinate in my car, which did not work either.
So, after hoping to be able to stream music via Pandora, Jango etc thru the USB port after the update, now it seems its primary function is for charging.
Also, the ALL SHARE function, which I used to get the music on my phone originally, does not work now.
Anyone else have this issue with music player and USB connection?

txgopher- I have personally never used my Fascinate to listen to music via USB via stereo however, I can see why it would be frustrating for you to no longer be able to do so when it was never an issue prior to the update.
It sounds as though you and the store rep already did some troubleshooting by trying to duplicate the problem with another car, stereo and even doing the final troubleshooting step which is a master reset.
Since you have done all of the necessary troubleshooting steps to no avail, it most definitely appears as though the software update has interfered with that USB connection in some way.
What I have done is forwarded the information you have provided to Samsung in order for them to look into this concern as well as come up with a way to get this resolved.
Please stay tuned because as soon as we hear back from Samsung we will be sure to update this forum with the results/findings.
