No need to ground when installing RAM?

I have always been under the impression that when you are handling RAM chips/installing more memory you are supposed to ground yourself as a build up of static electricity can be harmful. However the instructions for installing memory for the iMac make no mention of this.
Is this an urban legend, something that used to be the case but no longer is for some reason, worthwhile doing but the ram upgrade instructions neglegently fail to mention it, ....?

Absolutely - plus the rather remote possibility of a toasted logic board - I've seen it happen. Of course, working in IT I see things that the average person rarely does. Like mouse droppings on a mobo, ants living behind the class screen of an LCD, and roaches in a floppy drive.
But my favorite? A guinea pig - alive - inside a Dell. The owner was installing a new graphics card when he was called away by his daughter, frantic that her pet had gotten out of its run. Some time later, having failed to find her guinea pig, he returned to the computer, fitted the case (which is where he was interrupted). I just upgraded two G5 dual processor machines in my dept.
Went from 2.5G to 4G in one and 1G to 4G in the other.
I really have not noticed any sizeable improvement in speed.
System profiler says "OK" on memory. They are all matched, same brand etc...
MAC HELP did not have any tips about installing RAM.
My question is; must I do anything AFTER installing RAM such as reset PRAM, permissions etc...

No. There is nothing more you need to do.
Going from 2.5 to 4 will probably not make that much difference, unless you are using high-end apps like Final Cut Pro that use a lot of RAM, or you run many apps at the same time.
I definitely noticed a big difference going from 0.5 to 1.5. I only noticed a small difference going from 1.5 to 2.5.

You absolutely need Adobe Bridge since color management synchronization is controlled via that application. The Extension Manager is necessary to install and manage various plug-ins for your applications. You might be able to get away without installing Media Encoder (converts various media formats to Flash for embedding in publications and PDF) or ExtendScript Toolkit.
Given that these particular applications / tools use relatively little extra disk space and that getting them installed quickly when you might suddenly need them might be difficult, we recommend you install them as part of your initial product installation.

Help! Strange error when installing RAM

I stuck a 512 stick of ram into my 12 inch iBook G4 (800 mghz) and I get kernal panics. when i run the hardware test cd it says:
Error 2MEM/101/4:DIMM1/J31
any idea what it means? it happened once before, so i returned the ram and just chugged along at 256. now i need the bump from some extra ram.
I would appreciate anyone's help. This is stressing me out

When I decided to upgrade my RAM, I bought some Kingston RAM and it came up with a similar error to the one you are experiencing. As others have already suggested to you, I returned the RAM and got sent another stick of RAM as a replacement. I have forgotten which brand it was, yet I know it wasn't Kingston, and alas it worked. I'm not saying that Kingston don't make good products, but it is just unfortunate that you received one that doesn't work. Return your RAM to your supplier, and ask for either a refund or replacement.

What security precautions need I take when installing VPC and Windows

I am a long time Mac user who enjoys the fact that viruses have never been even a minor issue. I am concerned that installing Windows with VPC 7 will expose my machine to the wide world of Windows viruses and security issues. My windows-using friends spend more time talking about security and anti virus nonsense than they spend actually using thier machines (slight exageration). Am I just being snobby and paranoid, or are these fears grounded?
Also, VPC and windows are way too expensive in my way of thinking. I just need to view webpages I update at work on PC browsers, and occasionally use Access (which isn't made for Mac, right?). Should I just buy a cheap-o windows box (like the 300 dollar or so Dell)? I hardly need power to do what I want.

You should take the same precautions with VirtualPC as you would with a real PC.
You should be running the same anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall software you would run on your real PC.
VPC has the "advantage" that you can delete it and recreate it anew.

What do i need to consider when installing labview on a virtual windows machine?

IT wants to get rid of all computers and wants us to run labview development for our new test lab from a virtual machine. Is this a good idea? What are the potential issues that I need to warn IT about?

Will you be able to communicate with all of the instruments through the netork?
Do they have a good reason for doing what they say they want to do?
They are going to put themselves out of a job. Once you have all your stuff virtualized on a network, the next step is them losing their jobs as they outsource network administration to India.
I think these virtual machines are just going to cause you more problems down the road even if you can get them working to some degree. I really think you need to fight these attempts by them. If they want to make this change, then it should be their resonsibility to prove to you that all will work properly before they try to implement their scheme rather than them forcing a change and making you try to prove to them that it won't work.
Here is one scenario I would pose that that works against their idea.
Do you have long running tests? Something where you set up equipment and the PC, and have it execute for a period of time continually collecting data? If something goes wrong during this test, is the test a waste, the test piece trashed? If you have a PC/real connection to your instrument, then even if the network goes down, the test should still be able to run successfully and the data collected. But now if you virtualize the PC and the network goes down, it basically takes down the heard of your program and your test is corrupted. Now they'll say they have back plans, redundant routers, blah blah blah. And it is usually rare that internal LAN's go down. But where is this server? Is it local to you or some other remote location? It is much more likely for the network to go down if you are jumping between buildings, states, even countries. And IT is notorious for needing to reboot a server, much needed security upgrades, blah blah blah, that will cause them to take down the virtual machine server. They may even promise that they'll notify you before they do such a step so that you can finish your test and make sure everything is clean and shutdown. But guess what, they never do.

Hold down the Option key while you boot your Mac. Then, it should show you a selection of devices. Click your flash drive and it will boot from that.

You need Apple drivers. And you then need to add on your own audio driver.

You need the admin password you created when you first set up the machine. Just about every installer running under OS X will require you to authorize the installation by entering an administrator password - even software update requires this. You really should not forget your admin password, as it is required for many things in OS X since, unlike Windows, you often need to manually type in the admin password to proceed with an install or update (whereas Windows will take admin authority, if you are logged in as an admin, by simply clicking continue or yes).
If you cannot remember your admin password, you can reset it from the recovery CD that came with your mac - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1274

I need some help guys i used to have itunes 7.1 working fine, then one day i wanted to upgrade to 7.6 so i installed it, but when i clicked on the itunes icon on my desktop it would act as if it will be loading to open itunes but nothing. Could not remove the Directory it was locked because of one of the .dll s

What is Bonjour and why is it installed?
When you install any edition of the Adobe Creative Suite 3 family or a Creative Suite 3 component on Windows, Bonjour is installed as a service on the machine. Bonjour is Apple's open source implementation of zero-configuration networking software. It is used by Adobe Version Cue CS3 client applications to dynamically discover Version Cue Servers on the local network.
For it to function correctly, you must allow Bonjour access to the internet through your firewall. Bonjour checks to see whether the DNS server configured on your computer supports service discovery. No data is transmitted to Adobe. (so they say) Bonjour connects to no other servers than your machine's pre-configured DNS server. (so they say) Bonjour also sends network packets to and receives them from a multicast IP address on the local network (244.0.0.251) once every thirty minutes. iTunes in Mac OS X Tiger is outdated. Open  > Software Update to install the latest iTunes version for Tiger.
If you need iTunes 10.7 or a newer version, you have to upgrade to Mac OS X Snow Leopard. First, check that your Mac is supported > http://support.apple.com/kb/sp575 If it is, buy Snow Leopard > http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
After buying Snow Leopard, make a backup of your data, insert the DVD and upgrade to Snow Leopard. After upgrading, open  > Software Update, and install the latest Snow Leopard version. Finally, run Software Update again to install iTunes 11.0.4. If you want to install iTunes 10.7 instead, download it from the Apple website > http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1576

Probably wasn't a good idea to install beta software on a device when you're not a developer.
Apple clearly states that beta software is not to be installed on production devices.
Not really much you can do except wait for iOS 6.1 to be officially released and then install it.
