No 'network' between devices on wireless network (Internet is ok)

Yesterday I bought a new router (Linksys WRT300N) which was a replacement from a dodgy Belkin-N router which kind of died. After setting up the wireless network, I get Internet OK on all my devices, but there is no networking between the devices (i.e. the Macbook Pro can't see the other map, or the apple TV). I'm sure there is a very simple explanation/setting, but I'm really struggling to find it!!
I'm connected to the Internet via a cable modem (through Virgin Media - was Telewest) which feeds the router. (DHCP enabled)
I've got the following devices set up on the wireless network:
MacBook Pro, iBook, PS3, 360, a PC and an Apple TV.
Because I can't see the other devices (e.g. mac's can't see each others sharing) I can't see the AppleTV to sync it anymore.
I'm at a loss at what else to try (I'm pretty experienced at IT, although not the dark arts of networks).
I have filesharing on, the 5353 UDP port open (iTunes works ok), firewall off on the router, all the IP addresses of the devices appear to be on the same Subnet. It all worked fine on the old router :-/
Any ideas very much welcome... I've read a lot of the Apple guides and nothing seems to point out something I haven't tried. The appletv DID appear in the device list earlier, but I'm not sure why/how and it went again. The Apple TV is on the wireless network fine, connects to U-Tube etc.

FIXED... there was an option, hidden away in the default advanced wireless settings that blocked communications between computers on the network... argh... defaulted to ON (Setting is called AP Isolation and allows communication with router but not each other...)
Phew...

  • The Difference between Extending a Wireless network and WDS?

I have an Extreme (n) and an Express (n).
I want to make sure the signal is strong upstairs and share a printer (connected to the express) and use AirTunes. I also may add an external drive to the Extreme.
What's the difference between Extending a Wireless Network and using WDS? Will there be a speed difference?
Message was edited by: J. Christopher Edwards

I think you don't get it
If I have another draft N router that operates at 2.4G and I have only n devices I can still use WDS and it will connect using draft n in the 2.4G band.
If one g device connects to the network will go in mixed mode.
The AEBS will still report 130 Mbps for your n clients and 54 for your g clients.
If the other router is g only obviously you can't connect between the two router at n mode but still the AEBS will be in mixed mode and not in g. The Extreme will still report 130 Mbps for the connected n clients.
I can tell you that because I have actually implemented it am not taking off the documentation.
The same device if I try to use the "extend n network" does not even see the AEBS but will happily keep the n in the WDS mode and though the bandwidth is halved it is still more than g.
In any case enough for this!

  • Dual Connection; Force use of Wireless for Internet, Wired for Networking

    Hello,
I have 2 connections at work: 1) ethernet to our local server/network/internet, and 2) wireless internet (through my phone's hotspot).  Our connection is very spotty through our network right now, so I want to use my
wifi for internet and the wired to network only.
I've tried manually entering the priorities in the adapter metrics (5 for the wifi and 15 for the ethernet). They still show 9 for wifi and 10 for ethernet as before (netstat -r).
I also found in another forum where to change the connection orders in Advanced Settings (Change adapter settings>Alt>Advanced>Advanced Settings, then move order).
Niether of these solutions have worked.  I have to physically unplug my ethernet to get it to use the wireless connection. Webpages will sit there forever and then only half load or not even at all, but when I unplug and hit refresh, they pop right up.
    Any help is appreciated

    Hi,
The adapter metrics should work. Please take a try to modify the metrics on both of the two adapters, and then recreate the two connections.

  • MacBook Pro forgets its wireless & network internet settings...

    Hi...
I'm having problems with my MacBook Pro 'remembering' its wireless and network internet settings. I'm connecting via Airportto my Belkin 54g wireless router which is what has been running happily for the last 18 months.
Here's what happens - AirPort says it's connected, the internet works fine but when the MacBook Pro 'sleeps' or is restarted it 'forgets' its network and internet settings and cannot log on to the internet.
I get the Network Diagnostics appearing and I go through the options and eventually Network Diagnostics will show everything is fine, except there is no internet connection. I click through next options available on screen and I manage to get the MackBook Pro to restore its internet connection. All is fine until the MacBook Pro goes to 'sleep' again or is switched off.
This hassle began out of the blue - I haven't changed any settings on the machine, I haven't installed any software or anti-virus programs - it just spung up!
Any help or advice is greatly appreciated!
    Thank you in advance!

    Hi,
I have not encountered this particular problem yet, but I have just bought a Belkin 54g adsl and wireless router. It has connected up to my home pc with no problems and it has also connected up to my macbook pro (leopard) okay, but the range on the internet connection is really poor. It works up to about 50 feet, but I can't use it upstairs, which granted is more than 50 feet away from the source, but at 80 quid I thought it would perform better.
I contacted Belkin support which is local rate and they suggested changing the wireless channel from 11 to 6, but when I did this it would even find the network using Airport.
I would like to be able to use the laptop over 50ft (i.e. in my bedroom) as well as all over the house, but so far I only get as far as the next room!
If anyone has any suggestions I would be grateful? NB: I am not a very technical user.

Can one connect the Time Caspule to the iPhone to act as a network internet modem?
Sorry, but no. The Time Capsule needs a wired Ethernet broadband connection to be able to provide an Internet connection for connected devices. Check with your cellular provider to see if they have an adapter that might do what you want.  Something like this...for example:

Enter the Apple ID you want to use for iCloud in Control Panel > Network > Internet > iCloud.
Enter the Apple ID you want to use for store purchases (including iTunes in the Cloud and iTunes Match) in iTunes > iTunes Store.

    Welcome to the Apple community.
iTunes and iCloud and different accounts, you will need to delete both accounts from your device before adding the new details in their place.
For iCloud go to settings > iCloud, scroll down and hit the delete button. You can then sign back in using your correct details. For iTunes go to settings >store, tap your account ID and then sign out, you can then sign back in using your correct Apple ID.

  • Network/Internet Connection Drops

I've been having this for a long while (>6 months) but it hasn't bugged me too much until now.
Symptoms: Network/internet connection just goes away.
When: After about 5-30 minutes that the computer is on (maybe longer sometimes).
Activity: Anything to nothing. Sometimes it's been idle for hours and it just doesn't connect.
Recovery: Reboot works every time. Any amount of fiddling with the network connections fails. Looking at the system preferences shows the connection is still valid. If I change locations, nothing happens. If I try to ping my router, time-out.
I'm thinking it has to be related to an update some time ago as I don't have much 3rd party stuff in the mix. Running straight LAN connection to Linksys using static IP.
Yes I know the Linksys and my cable modem are fine as the other 3 computers that I have experience no interruptions.
This is starting to get very annoying.

    Ok - long-shot here...
I recently started having problems with my macbook pro dropping internet (connected via Airport to TC). My iMac (also connected via airport to TC) had no issues.
I run 2 wifi networks using TC, a 'full-up' network and a guest (internet only) network. So I tried switching to the internet only network - hey presto! no probs...
So what is different between the 2 networks - well, I had started messing about with Back to Mac and remote login/file sharing between the laptop and imac. Although I had given up trying to make it all work, it was clearly trying to establish connectivity in the background, thus presumably interfering with the connection for internet that I was using actively on the laptop.
After turning all file/screen sharing and back to mac off the problem was resolved. Luckily I am still able to access my TC as network storage between both my imac and laptop and I have moved back to my 'full up' wifi network......touch wood, problem resolved.

  • 4S Verizon Network / Internet Connectivity Issues?

I have been having problems with what appears to be Verizon Network/Internet Connectivity issues. I am located in northern Colorado, using an iPhone 4S with a Mophie Air battery backup/case.
I am in a solid 4G area (even though the phone is 3G) and I have not had any problems with any connection issues, until last night. I still see three bars of 3G service on the phone indicator area...so it is decieving.
I can still recieve emails, text messages, and phone calls, but nothing that uses the internet will work.  All apps seem to try to open and try to update, but the whizzy-wheel indicator just sits and spins until I get a "Network Error" message or a time out error of some kind. Most error pop-ups are saying to check the internet settings and try again. Ugh!
Also, since it seems to be trying to recognize the network all the time (even when all tasks are killed and nothing should be running), my battery is going down MUCH faster today! I took it off of the charger at 7am and it was down to 20% battery in only 4 hours! Then I turned on the battery backup, and it is quickly using that up too! At this rate my phone will be completely DEAD by the time I leave work today, and I haven't even used it for anything all day (except to try to connect to the web a few times - testing)!
I have tried the following so far to try to regain internet through the Verizon network, to no avail:
checked for software updates...phone was up to date with iOS 6.0.1
checked my firmware version (it is 3.0.04)
killed all background/running apps (with the home button double-click/hold icon/end)
"reset" my phone via a couple of methods (both the regular power off option and the force-power off option).
*228, option 2 (to reset Roaming)
    cleared all data cache areas/cookies/etc.
    Cellular data is set to "On"; Roaming is set to "On" for all options;
I have a 64GB device (57.3 usable capacity) of which I still show 46.2 available.
WiFi is set to "Off" (although I can use WiFi at home with no problem if I need to, but I shouldn't have to!)
Airplane Mode is set to "Off"; Restrictions are set to "Off"; Bluetooth is set to "Off"
Basically, there is NO REASON my phone should be having connection issues!
    PLEASE HELP?!!

I tried everything you did and more, i thought i had it working, but i got a voicemail today and when i went to open it earlier it just has the wheel loading forever and then says it cant onnect to voicemail. the searching does make it wear down the battery faster as well.  i can get calls, texts etc, but i cant help but think there are a few bugs with the ios 6.01 software

  • Staying connected to network/internet while sleeping?

Hi. To my understanding, when your Macbook goes to sleep it cuts off the connection with your network/internet to save power. This, in turn, kicks you off of IM clients (Yahoo, AIM, etc) and interrupts any downloading you might be doing (BitTorrent, Newsgroups, etc).
Is there a way to have your Macbook stay connected to the internet while it sleeps? Like I like to stay signed on to Yahoo/AIM while I'm not at the computer....is it possible to do that with my Mac? I also download large files at times and like to do that when i'm not using the computer, like when it would be sleeping. Is it possible to set it up so I can do that?
I looked through the System Preferences and couldn't find anything to manually make it so. To get it to stay connected to the internet, would I just have to dim the screen and put my preferences to where it will never sleep? Isn't that bad for the battery if your computer's on a lot? Thanks for any help. Just switched to Macs and I'm loving it.

    hi,
you cannot keep internet connection and programs active while your computer is in sleep mode. they intent of sleep mode is to spin down drives to allow safe deplacement of your computer but still but still powering RAM to allow a quick restart that will keep all your data. (ref http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25801)
when you mention that you want to have download going on, it means you need your computer awake and running. in order to have this, the only things you can shut down is your screen (the computer must stay awake) and you can adjust this from then energy saver preferences.
if you have download in progress, your computer will not go into sleep until they are completed. but in order to keep your connection with IM clients, you will effectively need to set sleep setting to never.

  • Switching between devices on Airplay?

Hello! I received a new Apple TV for Christmas. I have an iPhone and so does one of my roommates, and another has an iPad. I was wondering if there was an easy way to switch between devices using Airplay on the Apple TV. As of now I've just been powering off both devices and turning my iPhone on first so it will stream to the Apple TV, but I was hoping someone knew of an easier way to swtich between devices. Thanks!

You don't need to "switch" between ios devices, I've had an iphone and itouch both controlling the AppleTV at the same time. Comically, as my daughter would select a song on her itouch, and I'd switch it with a song from my iphone. However, there is a problem with the AppleTV and Iphone finding each other when you leave your house and disconnect from your wireless network. This may be the issue you are facing and why you have to shut off your iphone, and reboot. Each time I leave the wireless network and return in order for the airplay icon to show up I have to reset my iphone. You may wish to check out some other threads for this issue and see if there is a new solution. For now, the only one I know is the reboot method.
