No offline search OVI Maps

Hi,
I am having a problem with my new Nokia 5230. The offline search does not work in OVI Maps. I installed the newest version 3.03 and uploaded the maps of my country (the Netherlands) to the phone. I am able to pick a direction while using the map itself but when i enter an address in the search bar it give the error: no offline results found.
Maps is in offline modus because of my subscription without internet.
tried entering just the streetname, streetname and city, streetname city and country, different streets...
anyone got a solution?
thanks

I am considering buying a Nokia phone here in NZ because it has sat nav, but I wont have a mobile internet connection - so I need it to work in offline mode.
The problem with many phones working properly 100% reliably offline (as a car GPS would) is:
1) the sensitivity of their GPS chips.
2) disabling features in your phone and Nokia Ovi Maps application that would cause it to go online.
Second problem is easily fixed. First problem is more difficult.
The sensitivity of many phone GPS chips makes them very likely to need A-GPS (Assisted GPS) to get a satellite lock in a short amount of time (and for reliable operation). This isn't necessary with dedicated hardware in most circumstances (their sensitivity is generally better than many phones).
I use an external bluetooth receiver (Holux M-1000), which normally gives a satellite lock in about 30 seconds. I would recommend it highly if you wanted to use your phone as a dedicated GPS device and wanted reliable and quick operation without Assisted GPS.

  • Still the same bugs?! (Ovi Maps, N8)

    Hi!
I'm using Ovi maps lately quite a lot but I have some problems with this software, especially with the usability. When searching the net for bugfixes/help I found an older bug report on Nokia BetaLabs: http://betalabs.nokia.com/apps/ovi-maps-for-mobile-v3-06/bugreport/23781/top-10-bugs-in-ovi-maps-v-3... and my problems are still the same but Ovi Suite says that I have the latest version (v3.06, Map version 0.2.42.122 on N8-00)
    My problems are:
1.) When searching for an accurate address (Street name, No., ZIP, City name) there is no hit for offline navigation, Ovi maps needs an online search. If I leave the house number out the offline navigation finds the street - Why aren't there the house numbers stored for offline navigation? There is mostly no sense in only finding a street but not the accurate address. As long as I only use the navigation inland that isn't a big problem as I have internet connection included in my phone rate - but it's a problem abroad because of high roaming rates ...
2.) So I have always internet connection on Ovi maps - problem is that sometimes when the UMTS-connection is lost (e.g.. in tunnels) there is a pop-up if I want Ovi maps to connect to the internet. If I choose "Yes" there is some seconds later a new pop-up where I need to choose the connection - That's very annoying! I can't find a setting like "always allow Ovi maps to connect to the internet". There is only a setting if I only want offline navigation (which doesn't work, see 1.).
3.) If there is more than one result I can't figure out what is the difference between the results (except the distance) because the exact address isn't scrolling and the results are only like "Country, State, ...." - I don't see the differences because there is only "...".
4.) I can't scroll through the map once the navigation has started. There is only this mode where I can scroll threw the turns/junctions. Sometimes I like to see where the navigation takes me before I start driving, that is hardly possible without a 'free-map-scroll-mode'.
One last point is the search-process: It is more comfortable to have a step-by-step search for the destination like all major satnavs have (TomTom, Garmin, ...) and bigger on-screen-keyboard because with this tiny letters it is quite impossible to add/change the address while driving.

AUTxRemoteC wrote:Now to the points from my first post:
1.) I've downloaded the maps via Ovi Suite on my mobile. Internet connection is only used for the search, but not everytime, it's only some kB but abroad some kB could be very expensive ;-)
2.) Thanks for this hint but everything was/is configured right as you said. This is more or less a general problem of my phone, maybe it has also something to do with my provider. Not only Maps asks regularly for the connection to use, other applications like the AR-Apps Wikitude and LiveView (from BetaLabs) but also some games are doing the same.
    1. Maybe I misunderstand your question but I have no problem with searches right down to numbers in streets with the phone offline i.e the country, town, street, street number is found and the cursor sits over that exact address on the map. Perhaps it is a problem with your country's maps? In the countries I use the geo data is readily available right down to the individually surveyed plots of land in towns and cities (and hence to numbers in streets).
I often find it quicker to do a search for the country first if it is another country you are searching for the address in, then do the city, street number and name search.
    2. I suspect that you have not barred such connections somewhere in the set up of your phone generally or else for for some app, or perhaps, as you have games, etc loaded, one or more of them insists on "phoning home" as some do and as they have opened a connection Maps asks to use it.
That with Maps 3.08 on an N8 but I do not recall any problems on earlier versions either.

  • Newest Nokia Ovi Maps ( 0.1.25.114 ) manual downlo...

    Good news
About a week ago I noticed Nokia released a new release version of its maps.
Last update I noticed was back around May 14 2010 with version 0.1.24.114
Since about 16 October 2010 the version available has been the new 0.1.25.114
Want to install updated Ovi Maps manually? Read on.
This is for those who have trouble with Nokia's applications, such as Ovi Suite (or those that would just prefer not to use it).
If you normally get your maps through Nokia's Ovi Suite or any other Nokia application and are happy with it, please continue using the same method as you normally would - the procedure below is not necessary.
    Minimum requirements
    * A version of Nokia Ovi Maps 3 (or later) is needed on the phone
    * A MicroSD card in your phone with enough free space (or a phone with enough free space if it doesn't use MicroSD)
Upgrading maps to the new version
    1) Connect the phone to the computer in Mass Storage mode (not PC Suite mode). Alternatively you may find file operations faster if you put your MicroSD card in a USB card reader. Then return it back to the phone when you are done.
    2) Back-up your cities folder on your MicroSD card to another location (DVD, computer, external hard drive, etc). Just in case.
    3) Now go ahead and delete the cities folder and qf file on the (root of) your memory card. (Make sure the MicroSD card is in the phone if it isn't already). Now run the Ovi Maps application on your phone once (so that it can re-build the cities folder and its sub-folders, along with the qf file).
Now you have a clean folder structure with no maps. Exit the application.
You are now ready to manually install the latest Nokia maps!
All files below are direct off Nokia's official Gate5 server(s).
(Gate5 is a company Nokia acquired some time ago)

To download all continents requires an 8GB MicroSD card (or phone storage) with most of its space free. The cities folder fills to over 6GB on your phone with everything installed.
Australia/Oceania and Africa are both relatively small (about 130 MB each) compared to Asia (about 1 GB), America (about 1.6 GB) and Europe (about 2 GB). Larger when the zip files are extracted onto your phone.
    Enjoy Nokia's newest 0.1.25.114 maps!

How can I download selected countries map and transfer to memory card? Can I download two separate countries maps and extract o memory card? Can you provide like to UAE maps? Please advise
    United Arab Emirates
You can download as many countries or continents as you please. They will be added to your phone with no limit and no restriction (as long as you have enough storage space).
    * Maps always need to be extracted to cities\diskcache
    * Voices always need to be extracted to cities\diskcache\voices
    * Index files need to be extracted to cities\diskcache\ClientIndex (create the ClientIndex folder if it's not there)
Overwrite any files if it asks you (mostly folder structure and a few identical files). The rest is additions.
    It's as simple as that.
United Arab Emirates is listed under 'Asia' in Ovi Maps, so you need the Asian Index file to search offline in this region. If you are unsure which Index file you need for your country, download them all; they are fairly small and it doesn't hurt to have them all so every country you might like to install can be searched offline.
    Good luck

  • Ovi map search offline problem

Whenever I search for a location offline on my E72, I end up with no results available.
After fiddling with my phone for the better half of a day (including first using online search then turning off the internet to use offline search), I tried deleting all the maps on my memory card and installing only the maps for the areas I need through the OVI suite. Having read earlier threads on this topic, I was sure to wait until the index files were fully transferred.
Now the offline search works, but only for locations within my own city. For locations in the neighboring city, though only a few dozen miles away, I end up again with no results available.
Is this normal or is there any other way I can try fixing it? Thanks.

    Hi sherryglass
Unfortunately I think it is also related to size of country, as with world maps on E72 I can do detailed search of UK "Offline" but say for example USA it has to be "Online"; that said access point in OVI Maps application can be via WLAN or network.

  • Ovi Maps with stored offline satelllite images fro...

    Hello
So far I know that it's not possible to use the built-in satellite view from Ovi Maps when offline.
But might it be possible to configure Ovi Maps such that it takes stored satellite images from a specific location on the phone (e.g. memory card) instead of downloading them from its pre-configurated map server?
If so, it would be possible to download maps / sat images from Google, Microsoft Live, Yahoo or whatever and include them in Ovi Maps - would be a great feature!

    nobody an idea?

  • E90, ovi maps (maps 3.0), search functionlity

hi, when i am using ovi maps, then i select 'search', and in search i select 'places', i start writing the name of the place. what happens next is like this: the screen starts dimming, dimming dimming till it looks like it just turned off. then the screen turns white with the nokia logo, and is like the device resets (urning off then on again, but without the hands animation). then it appears on the 'desktop' screen, but the maps application is not running. in summary, when using the search funtion in ovi maps the device resets itself, mostly every time

Hi voodoochicken, I just tried the seach function & it doesn't behave how you describe it, it gave me the option to select my favorite, like the previous poster advise you, reinstalling the firmware doesn't work pay a visit to the Nokia service point, good luck.

  • N8 - Downloaded OVI maps won't work offline

I have recently downloaded two map sets, so they could help me find my way outside my homecity. Since I downloaded them, I expected to have them available even without a network, simply because there's no network in many places I go to.
However, I can't check my position or the streets or such if I have no network. Is this how OVI Maps is supposed to work? Online only?

    @tuxette
If you are without network access so Assisted GPS cannot be utilised, you are totally dependent upon Integrated GPS positional method and due to compromises in GPS antenna size/position within candybar form of N8 this may be unsatisfactory; ironically the E7 a similar Symbian S^3 has been reported as being better in this respect than N8.
You could find that using only Integrated GPS (found in Menu > Settings > Application settings > Positioning > Positioning methods) that it takes 20 - 30 minutes outside away from tall buildings to establish first positional fix, although subsequently it would be easier.
Although no longer officially supported by Nokia there is nothing to stop you enabling Bluetooth GPS and utilising a Bluetooth GPS receiver, although this rather defeats the object and compatibility of said unit can also be an issue.

  • Positioning Server on 5800 Ovi Maps

I keep getting the following message when using the new Ovi Maps Navigation - Connection to network positioning server required.  Costs may be incurred.  If I say no then I can continue and get the free navigation as advertised, but is there any way of stopping this message coming up?
    Solved!

MENU -> Apps -> Location -> Positioning Server (turn to DISABLED)
    Settings -> Connectivity -> Destinations ->
    1. Remove the STREAMING profile permanently by deleting the setting from telco.
    2. In the INTERNET section remove all the telco settings.
    3. In the MULTIMEDIA section remove all the telco settings except the one applicable for you, as in my case my SIM card is 3G, so I just keep my CELCOM 3G MMS only and delete permanently the rest of it.
    4. In the WAP SERVICES section remove all the telco settings except the one applicable for you, as in my case my SIM card is 3G, so I just keep my CELCOM 3G WAP only and delete permanently the rest of it.
Note: screenshot settings may vary from service providers, above is applicable for one of the Malaysian telco
The reason you are deleting the unwanted settings is a special cause which you will overcome the credit drain issue.

Nokia OVI Maps Online & Offline Map Searching Issue
    1. Setup your WiFi setting.
    2. Verify the WiFi functionality (browse some web page).
    3. Set the WiFi as 1st priority inside the destination (internet) setting.
    4. Set the WiFi as the default access point (for the internet).
    5. Delete the WAP / MMS / STREAMING settings and left the 3G Internet (as 2nd priority inside the internet setting).
    6. Edit the 3G internet setting and change the "password prompt" to YES.
    7. Load up the maps loader.
    8. Click on the delete maps from storage.
    9. Reload in the maps (at least the malaysia map must be selected).
    10. Load as well the voice guidance file.
    11. Wait for all the downloading and uploading finished.
    12. Run Location and disable the agps and network under positioning setting.
    13. Run the OVI maps.
    14. When the 3G internet prompt up select cancel (do not connect) (if it still pop up, suppose wont because we already disable A-GPS and network in Location setting).
    15. Go to setting and change the internet to online.
    16. Select appropiate voice guidance file.
    17. Go outside where more satelite can be search.
    18. Now go to my location and wait for the satelite to get a fix (might be take long since no agps)
    19. Make sure the red dot are "IN MALAYSIA".
    20. Change maps mode as SATELITE view to try the WiFi can download the satelite image (to ensure WiFi is working).
    21. Once confirm WiFi working switch back to maps view.
    22. Walk around and you will see the GPS is working already (since it already lock, red dot will turn SOLID RED and satellite bar should be green).
The most useful for the 3G internet password prompt when agps and network positioning enable:
    1. Select YES during the password prompt you will have A-GPS (fast lock with charges).
    2. Select CANCEL during the password prompt you will have full I-GPS (slow lock but FOC).
Steps 18 and 19 are needed because sometime during the first time OVI maps run it will set it "previous' location as some where maybe not within Malaysia and if this happen and you dont have those location maps downloaded in the database then it will direct download from the internet and who know which access point it gonna use (if it use 3G internet then you will lost lots of phone credits for those huge maps data), confirm this if you dont have the maps data install it will direct download the file.
Below is a screenshot shows, full OFFLINE guide, see the GPS INTERNET connection is striked out:
Credits to my friend sklchan from Lowyat.NET - Malaysia's Tech Enthusiast Resource Community
The method / settings above uses device to GPS satellite connection directyl, therefore please go outdoor for better coordinate locks.

  • Avoid internet connections when using ovi maps.

I own a E60 and have the latest version of Ovi Maps for Belgium on my cell phone.
In my internet settings I mentioned: connection -> Offline. As such I expected not to connect to internet at all and only usethe local maps.
But my last bill mentioned quite a few internet-connections. Is this in order to search (faster) for my own position ? If yes, is there a way to avoid these connections ? If not, any idea what another reason could be (although I don't use mail-functions, ... on my cell phone) ?

    Hi Chessness,
If you have set your connection to Offline mode, your maps will not connect any more. So your case should be caused because of some other application or feature of the mobile.
Try to check if you have any application (like social networking apps or weather app, etc..) which use internet to function. Also check if you have any settings enabled in your phone to use internet (like check for automatic software update or somehting like that). You can take the timing of the usages from your bill, that might help you to understand your phone usage more.

How to install and setup GPS in nokia E-71.
Firstly Install Nokia Ovi Suite (advance version of PC Suite) in your respected computer.
    http://www.nokia.co.in/get-support-and-software/download-software/nokia-ovi-suite
After installation of Nokia Ovi Suite go to following link
    http://www.nokia.co.in/explore-services/ovi-maps/downloads?intc=ncomexpserv-fw-ilc-lft-con-na-ncomex...
Now install the the second link file into your phone, i.e., "nokia_maps_3.03_10wk11_b04_s60_3.1_rom.Nocs.sis".
After successful installation connect your phone with data cable in PC Suite (DON'T run PC suite application in your system) mode and open Nokia Ovi Suite application in your system.
Now in Nokia Ovi Suite application click on View-Go to-Maps (make sure your system is connected to Internet and your mobile phone key pad doesn't get locked, if keypad autolock period is on switch it off for that moment and your phone is fully charged, now in maps select Asia in that India and download that India Map (103 MB) into your phone.
Please Note that do not disconnect your phone from data cable else maps will not get downloaded and will not to be
    transferred to your phone.
After successful installation of maps into your phone download "Voice Guidance Languages", which ever is preferred by you, if you really want to enjoy it. Like- English(UK)-with street names or in Hindi, Tamil, Urdu.
Now you are almost done, just take your phone into your hand,
Go to Maps then select Options-then Settings
Internet-Connection-Offline ( don't worry your GPS will work fine as data bearer is Nokia which is free of charge, so just relax).
    Navigation-Drive Guidance-Select the desired Voice
Walk Guidance-Select the desired Voice or you can set it to Beeps and Vibrations (if downloaded).
Home Location- define you home location by searching in maps, this will make easier to drive back to home by simply selecting Drive Home option while using navigation.
Now go to option Map-Categories-select the categories you want to be shown on the map.
Its DONE, now search for any desired location press the selection button and then select Drive to or Walk to option and you will be connected to GPS.
Please Note as GPS needs free environment so it may not work in home and generally it takes 10-15 minutes to connect so please be patient.
    Worked perfectly for me
By the way, why doesn't the maps application work if I doenload all the maps instead of only India map??

  • Ovi map for other country downloaded and installed...

I've used the Ovi Suite 2.2.0.245 and connected with N900 but selected PC suite mode instead of Mass storage. I read alot that you have to select Mass storage for N900, but Ovi Suite won't then be connected with my phone, but works with PC suite.
I wanted to transfer country maps to the phone so I can use it offline. Selected the Map and downloaded and it said transfered to phone...so everything seems good. But when I go to open those maps on the phone...I can't find them anywhere at all! I'm not sure where they are.....I've check the 'ovi map', then the 'cities' folder but nothing. There are other files there but not titled with the cities i've downloaded. I tried to open those files anyways (having a "?" as their icon) and then selected I think 'Application' or something as ways to open the file.....then needed to download but 0kb...??? it then said unable to download, the file could be corrupted. So now..I'm stuck.
I don't know where the maps were transfered to. Oh and I check on the Ovi suite Map tab and selected my device, and it should alllll the cities and countries listed in my device (phone) already....but I can't find/open them on the phone. Much help and guidance would be appreciated!
    Thanks in advance.
    Solved!

Thanks for reply. I did check the cities folder and it's not there...I've downloaded New York and cannot find it. Also, the folders I saw were all a few kb and not the appropriate size.
I went to ovi maps on the n900 and only showed me where I am, I wanted to open new york map but don't know where and how. I clicked on search and entered new york but then ask me to connect to the internet. It did and it worked but then that means I have to connect.
It said I can be offline for N900:
    http://www.nokia.com.au/get-support-and-software/download-software/maps-support/how-to/maps-for-n900
I thought it can be veiwed offline, so how can I? I wanted to open the map when overseas but if there's no internet connection and I have transfered the map on the phone previously, I won't be able? =(

  • How can I delete favourite collection in Ovi map 3...

    Hello Everybody,
I have tried to search for delete function in Ovi Map 3.03 to delete the collection of my favourite. Unluckly, I can't find that function
    Anybody please help!

Well, smartphones are MEANT to be used with data plans anyway. And what do you mean 1 hour to disable all data connections? Actually I have mine offline and I sync to online ovi maps in like 5min.
    What I do is
    1. I have the Ovi Maps on my phone set to completely offline (offline mode in settings, A-GPS and Network turned off in Positioning Methods). Ovi Maps has also been preconfigured to automatically login to my account before when I was connected to WiFi.
    2. I turn on my PC, and log in to Ovi Maps.
    3. On my phone, without changing the settings anywhere, I go to Ovi Maps(its a screen shortcut)>Favorites>Sync with Ovi. Syncs in about a few minutes (of course I still only have quite a few routes and favorites, case to case anyway). It automatically goes online without changing the offline settings.
    4. As soon as it finishes syncing, I check the favorites on the PC browser, delete what I want to.
    5. After that, I sync on the phone again, and voila, route's gone. And the Ovi maps settings are set to completely offline during navigation.
Actually, if you are regularly in the presence of a WiFi hotspot, why dont you just sync it like every time you pass it, like every morning when you pass by starbucks for some coffee. You sync your phone. When you get home, if you dont have WiFi at home, then you delete and edit your favorites on your PC, then tomorrow, you sync again at starbucks.

  • Ovi Maps cannot read postal codes?

I have a big problem with the functionality of Ovi Maps. All my addresses in my address book have postal codes (zip codes). When I click on the address in my Nokia N8 address book Ovi Maps opens but cannot find the address. When I edit the address in Ovi Maps and remove the postal code, then it will find the address. Why can’t Ovi Maps handle (or ignore!) postal codes?

hmmm... do not know what is going on.....
in Germany, i did search with postalcode information on the weekend, but it failed. So i did not use the postalcode and search (offline) was fine.
Now that i found this thread, i did test it again... and the same search-string worked fine.
hmmmm...... do not know what is different now... except that i am now much more far away from the adress i am searching for....
