Oracle 8i for RedHat 6.0 Linux.
Our web application accesses the back-end oracle database to generate some reports in the web browser. (using JDBC)
For the same report SQL script, if we run it from 'SQL*PLUS', the performance is OK. But if we run the same report from browser, the performance is very very bad. Say, it takes 2-3 seconds to run a report SQL in SQL*PLUS, but in browser it will take 10 minutes to get the report.
For the same application and same oracle database, the performance in browser and SQL*PLUS are almost the same in Solaris. (hardware config is also the same)
My question:
1. Is that possible that we don't config the Oracle for Linux
correctly? If so, what should we check?
2. In our case, since it is related to SQL*NET, how can we check the config of SQL*NET is right?
3. Is that possible that because of Linux or Oracle for Linux?
4. Since we use JDBC, how can we check JDBC run OK or config correctly?

It's probably the Java part that's causing the speed problems. You can prove this easily enough by including some time stamping debug information in your Java code .... i.e log the time before and after you run the select statement.

The advanced tab reset doesn't update the .mac server version so the only way seems to be delete 50 at a time out of 6500 entries. How can I do an old school overwrite without confusing the computers as to which is which machine?

I looked back at the message Austin cited, and if I understand what you've posted above, you're not correcting the underlying issue.
First, you have seriously corrupted Address Book records on your source computer. If you had replaced those corrupted records with what I assumed would have been the intact records from .Mac, you would likely have resolved the underlying problem. But, as I understand what you've posted above, you did the opposite: you replaced the records on .Mac with the corrupted records on your source computer. It's not clear that the .Mac record set is now corrupted, and it should not be, but—on the other hand—it might be.
For the record, you should not have been able to successfully replace the record set on .Mac with corrupted data: it should have transferred only intact and valid data, or failed in an attempt to transfer corrupted records. The problem here is that there is not a one-to-one correlation between the Address Book schema and the .Mac schema for contact information, so it may have successfully passed the good data common to both environments, and not attempted to pass what incidentally are corrupted components.
You may be able to locate and fix each reported record only by using a utility provided by John Morgan, called ABFinder II. Send a message to the address listed in my Public Profile, and I'll reply with a copy. That application will allow you to identify the person referred to as CE45BC4E-4423-11DB-94EC-00050271EFEF:ABPerson, for example. By looking at both the error message and that specific record, you can correct the data in the referenced filed in that record, or recreate the record and delete the original.
You cannot synchronize successfully via .Mac—particularly across both the Mac OS X 10.3 and 10.4 mixed environment you have—until you either correct the underlying issue record by record, or do a wholesale replacement of the corrupted Address Book on your source computer from some other uncorrupted source: .Mac, a backup - something that does not contain the records with nil values.
The particular circumstances of your issue are complex, and really not at all clear. I cannot tell you how the initial corruption occurred on a record by record basis, or even how to avoid it in the future. If you hope to fix it, you'll have to be patient and attempt to do so record by record if no intact, uncorrupted copy of your contact record set is available. There is no quick fix to save the existing data.
And, Austin's right: there really is no one to talk to, though you could drag your source computer into an Apple Store and ask an Apple Genius to look at it, or go to an independent authorized dealer and ask someone familiar with such issues to look at it. No, your accounts will remain separate, any content that you download via either account will be tied to that account - so each account will only be able to authorise its own downloads on your computer's iTunes, redownload them, download updates to its apps, and make in-app purchases in its apps.

CS4 is pretty old, no longer sold and no longer supported by Adobe. It's also not compatible with many modern OSes.

I can't be the first person in iPod history to re-format.
So do I De-Authorize my PC "Before" or "After" I burn a Back up CD.

Well....You can Use iTunes for Backing up your Music, but I do not favor this mehtod.
It works fine for music files BUT: I prefer more control and completeness over my backup process. It is also very important to note that a large limitation of using iTunes to manage the backup is that the iTunes method does not create or maintain backups of the two meta-data files (iTunes Library.itl & iTunes Music Library.xml) where your Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, etc. are stored. See: What are the iTunes Library files?
If you are heavily invested in your Library data (Playlists, Play Counts, Ratings, Last Played, Date Added, etc.), it is crucial that you also make and archive multiple backups of your ‘iTunes Library.itl’ file.
If your music is located under one common Folder (e.g.-‘iTunes’), then it is easiest to physically copy that folder and all its sub-folders in one simple process. It can be done quickly, and incrementally – several times a day, when necessary. In the case of any data loss, just re-copy your entire (or partial) music library back to wherever it was, placing it in the main Folder that the previous iTunes expected. Along with the ‘iTunes Library.itl’ metadata file, this completes a full ‘restore’ of your music to the time of your last backup.
Use of a backup software program will greatly help. It will allow you to easily perform incremental backups of only the files that have changed. WinXP has such a facility built-in. I use a free program called FileSync ( http://www.fileware.com ). There are many out there. Some use Zipped files or proprietary formats, others use standard file formats. I like FileSync as it uses normal file formats that can be viewed/managed via any Windows program or utility.
iTunes Files to Backup (anytime you make additions or changes to the Music or Library that you want to retain)
1) All music files in their current folder structure (usually located in and under the ‘iTunes Music’ folder)
2) The Library database file: ‘iTunes Library.itl’ located in the ‘iTunes’ folder
3) The Library XML file: ‘iTunes Music Library.xml’ located in the ‘iTunes’ folder
4) Any XML playlist files you created for Playlist retention
5) The two iTunes.pref files (optional)

-- C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer Inc\iTunes.pref
6) The XML file of Ratings, Play Counts and Last Played attributes saved from the main Library and created by Otto’s SaveRatings script (also optional, but recommended):

Here's a list of possible ways to copy your music files from your main iTunes computer to another storage medium for backup purposes.
1) Use an External Hard Drive to store the complete iTunes meta-data files and underlying Music Folder structure and songs from your main computer. They are quite cheap now, for their storage volume. This is my preferred main medium.
2) If you have Two Computers:
2a) Connect them through a router
2b) Connect them using a Direct (w/Mac) or Crossover (PC/PC) Ethernet cable (See: http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/3001.html)
2c) Connect them via a USB-to-USB Network Bridge. See: here as an example.
Copy the files and folders from one computer to the other. Use the second PC as your backup repository.
3) Burn several DVDs (at 4.7+ GBs each) with the music data files and store them safely. Re-writable ones are good for backup purposes (if your DVD drive can manage these).
4) Burn 6x more on CDs (at 700MB each) than in #3 above and store them safely in more space Re-writable ones are good for backup purposes (if your CD drive can manage these).
5) Use a larger USB Flash drive (1GB – 4+GBs) to store the files only if you have a small amount ripped music or have multiple and/or jumbo USB drives at your disposal that will fit your music library.
6) Use the Second Internal Hard Drive (if available) of your PC -- not optimum, as you really want to physically separate the storage of backups from the originals, but good as a tertiary storage device.
By keeping only one copy of your music (other than on the iPod), you are not truly 'backed-up' and are running a high risk of losing your music. Music files on just the iPod and the computer is not considered having any backup. If you cannot store your complete music files on the computer’s internal HD, then create and maintain at least two external sets (any multiple combinations of ExHDs, DVDs, CDs).
You need at least two full sets of your music, not including what is on the iPod:
-- One full set on the PC within iTunes (on internal HD or ExHD)
-- One full set on an separate external backup medium (CD/DVD/ExHD/other)
-- One (full or partial) set on the iPod
It is a good policy to backup all your important data. It is a very smart policy to back it up on more than one medium.
External hard drives now run less than $100 for 200-250GBs of storage. Very cheap backup insurance, indeed. See This Link

Hello everybody out there,
As I can't find a clear answer in my FCP-manual, I'll ask my very simple question here...
What I want to do is select a segment (V, A1, A2)in my timeline, ripple delete it and then paste insert my selection into another part of the timeline. Pretty basic I should say.
As I like to do this as fast as possible and using only my keyboard, I tried it the way I used to do it on the AVID.
So, in this case:
*I make an IN-OUT selection with 'x'
*I ripple-delete with the delete button
*I set an IN-point somewhere else in the timeline, where I want my selection inserted and press 'arrow-V'.
And then some old selection appears, instead of the segment I had just ripple-deleted before!
So what am I doing wrong?
Or am I asking too much wanting to insert paste the same selection as I just ripple-deleted, without any mouse-movement?
And in case it's not possible... what will be the fastest way then?

For the record, the drag-then-Option method is just one keystroke. That's one long keystroke and one long mouse click.
The other method is three keystrokes and two mouse clicks. (And you have to make sure your AutoSelect buttons are in the correct state for the tracks you want to paste the clips to. If not, then there are more mouse clicks involved.)
Not that I'm counting, mind you.

I bought an Iphone that did not work and return it and no one can answer me as to what happen once it was received by Verizon

On March 14th I bought an iPhone the wi-fi did not work, I called Verizon support after hrs and days they could not help.(I purchase it on-line from Verizon.com) So I went to the local Verizon store was there for about 2 hrs and finally they said to come back the next day and they would have an answer which I did and they didn't they said to call Verizon to return the phone. When I called they said to just use the label that was enclosed. I asked if I needed anything else they said no that my tracking number on the label was all I needed. Well after many calls the last one lasting 90 minutes and the person telling me that she would fill out some form and send it to the return section and call me back. She never called back. I have the tracking info that it was deliver to them yet I not received a replacement phone nor a refund. Can anyone help me? What should I do now? Can't call the I just tried and again they start with let me transfer to this other section (no answer). I am so frustrated I hate Verizon Customer Service or lack of -

Importing EDLs and Reconnecting Media... Who can answer this question?

Hi, happy holidays! What am I missing here:
I have an EDL with in and out points from a number of different source files.
I import the EDL in Final Cut Pro as a sequence.
I click on the sequence. The edit decisions can be seen in the timeline, with all of the source files designated as offline.
I select the timeline and attempt to reconnect the media.
The media reconnects, no problem, but the edit decisions aren't in place. In other words, all of the media files begin at the beginning of the source media files (i.e. 04:00:00:00), rather than at the edit decision in and out points for each of the edits in the timeline.
Surely I'm just missing a step here, right?

The source files have been have been re-encoded with a different codec, but they are exactly the same insofar as duration of the source files, and the timecode hour and frame rate they have been assigned, as well as the name I have assigned the files.
I am simply trying to trick the EDL into recreating a timeline which utilizes source files which have been encoded differently than the original source files... And the timeline is recognizing these files.... only it won't cue the files up to correct timecode point in the files.

Ill break it down for you so you can understand the purpose of each part and why its there.

4 Jump Track 1 (insert your track name here)
5 mov GPRM 1, 0
6 Resume
There you go, now for the dissection:
1 Goto 3 if (GPRM 1 = 0) This basically says, if the value of GPRM 1 is equal to 0, then jump to line 3 in the code, if the value of GPRM 1 is not equal to 0, go to the next line. Since the value of GPRM 1 will always be 0 when you first play the DVD, it will always jump to line 2 the first time around.
2 GoTo 5 if (GPRM 1 != 0) This is saying if GPRM 1 is not equal to 0, go down to line 5 of the script.
3 mov GPRM 1, 1 This is what is executed after line 1 if in the first line, GPRM is equal to 0, this is now taking GPRM and adding a value of 1 to it.
4 jump track 1 After GPRM has a value of 1 added to it, it is going to jump to your track and start playing at the beginning of the track, just as a normal PLAY MOVIE button would do.
5 mov GPRM 1,0 This is resetting GPRM 1 back to zero for the next time around. This is where the script jumps to after you have returned to the menu, if you remember in the first part, the script reads the value of GPRM 1, since on a return to the menu, GPRM 1 now has a value of 1, meaning that in line 2, GPRM is not equal to 0, and it will jump to line 5 in the code. after executing this and resetting GPRM to 0, it will jump to the following line:
6 Resume. Your track will resume to where ever you left off before coming to the menu. viola, your now neck and neck with the big boys.
Hope this works, I tested it out and it worked for me. You can email me if you want and I will send you the actual script that I saved. It is important to remember that you need to set this as a pre-script on the track you want it to effect.

Ther are a few people on the forum here who can't connec to their home wireless network. iPhone picks it up and displays the wireless icon at the top but when we try to go online it drops out and connects with 3G or EDGE.
Has anyone got a clue about what is going wrong?

This was happening to me. I switched 3G to off and bam! my wifi connection established without a problem. I think it has to do with the 3G signal trying to establish with a tower and thus causing some sort of problem with the wifi. So whenever I'm home I turn off 3G.

I have an external hard drive , i cut and pasted my itunes library there. when i started itunes i changed the folder in preferences to point where the liobrary is now at. itunes is not recognizing this, i have tried to consolidate the library with no luck...what have i done wrong?

I'm not sure about "cut and paste". If you have iTunes 7, then you can just drag the entire iTunes folder to your external hard drive. Then hold down the Shift key while launching iTunes. You'll be given a dialog box where you can select the iTunes library you want to use. Navigate to and select the iTunes folder in it's new location on the external.

We have many reports (mostly layout style will be mailing label or form letter) in which one column (say company name) is variable. That column may come many times in each paragraph in a report.
When we running the report it looks Ok in screen/previewer. But while printing, some characters are getting truncated in right side of the page.
Any solutions?

But when I set the option that the computer is networked, The SMC (Solaris management Console) doesn;t startup. it says again and again that the server couldn't be found. Although I tried to stop and again start the SMC server process, but it didn;t work.,
Please help me out !!!!
