No optical output apple tv (2)

My Apple TV (2) --OS 5.0.2-- does not have sound output vía optical Toslink connection... I´ve tried all options in audio/video menu...
Of course HDMI works fine in image and sound, but I need optical output to connect to DAC in a just music system..
What is the problem with this hardware?

Same problem here. I have unpluged and restarted, but no sound from optical.

  • TS4107 I have to use the optical output to my receiver for my surround sound ( it does not decode HDMI). After updating the software on my Apple TV the optical no longer works. The HDMI to my TV works and provides sound to the measly TV speakers. WHY?

I updated my software as "recommended" and my optical output is not working anymore to my receiver and thus no surround sound. My HDMI to the TV still provides the picture and sound to the TV. My receiver only uses optical and was fine BEFORE the software was updated. How can I go back to the prior software or fix this? My Apple TV is the earlier 720P version. I have tried restarting on the Apple TV and then unplugging and reinserting all plugs to no avail. It provides no optical sound on Netflix, Youtube and other selections but does via HDMI only to the tinny TV speakers. ANY IDEAS?

GO to your Dolby Digital settings, and toggle the options.. Auto, On, Off. That worked for me, and a few other people.

  • The old Apple TV had a port for Analog the new one does not.  Where do I find a (TosLink), Optical to Analog Audio for the Optical Output on the Apple TV so I can run my Analog outside speakers?

  • Airplay through the optical output of my Apple TV to my stereo?

I cannot figure out how to use my Apple TV to stream music from the units optical output to the corresponding input on my receiver.  Any suggestions?  Seems simple enough....

Thanks, but yes, I have the output of the Apple TV connected to an input on the receiver, and the receiver is programmed to use that input.  I also changed the audio/video settings to 16 bit and no Dolby per apple instructions but that did not work either, any other ideas.  I want to stream the same output via HDMI and optical to two different receivers, no luck so far.

  • What is the optical output bit/sample rate of an Apple TV3 when using the wired network connection. 16/48 or 24/48.

What is the optical output bit/sample rate of an Apple TV3 when using the wired network connection. 16/48 or 24/48.

It doesn't matter what type of network connection it has its output is 16/48.

  • Two questions about the new Apple TVs optical output

Question #1: Does the new Apple TV output audio out of BOTH the HDMI and optical outputs at the same time? I have my Apple TV connected to my TV by HDMI, but I'd also like to connect it to my stereo separately for times when I only want to use Apple TV as airplay speakers.
Question #2: Is this the best option for converting Apple TV's optical output to a stereo that lacks an optical input? All I want is a stereo signal.
    http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?cid=104&cp_id=10423&cs_id=1042302&pid=6884&seq=1&format=2

I'm posting a follow-up here, in case anyone else is considering this optical to analog converter. I bought the one from monoprice I linked to above. I've only had it for a day, but it's exactly what I was looking for.
I've now got two simultaneous outputs from my Apple TV:
    - HDMI audio/video connected to my TV, which feeds one input in my stereo.
    - Optical audio output connected to the monoprice converter, which feeds another input in my stereo.
This makes for a great setup, giving me the ability to listen to streaming audio without using my TV.
So... to answer my own questions:
#1 - yes, Apple TV feeds both outputs at the same time (HDMI audio/video and optical audio). There is nothing to 'switch' or set up.
#2 - yes, that monoprice converter is probably the best option for converting optical to analog. It's relatively cheap (under $30). It's very small. And it works perfectly.

  • No sound from optical output when using hdmi/dvi cable

I am trying to connect my apple tv2 to my B&O Beovision 7. I have used an HDMI to DVI cable which is working fine for the picture; but obviously DVI does not carry sound. I have therefore connected an optical cable to the digital optical output on the apple TV and put this through a converter to digital coax, which then goes in to the TV. I know the optical cable / converter set up works fine as I have tested it on my sky box and it works fine. But I get no sound from the apple TV - any ideas?

I hav exactly the same problem... Did you resolve this??

  • Mac mini and optical output problems

I have just purchased a new Apple Mac Mini connected it to my Tv via HDMI and now am having problems getting the sound working.
I have connected via optical output and the cable itself works and I can see red lights at either end.
When plugged into the Mac the 'optical output' is greyed out(it does change when plugged in)
When the volume control comes up it has a circle with a cross through it.I have tried what i consider most 'normal' things to try. Currently doing a update of the Mac software. Please Help, PLEASE!

So you have connected via a Mini-Jack -> Toslink cable from the Mac Mini to your receiver? You haven't specified what cables you are trying to use. My guess from the red circle with a X through your digital output is it may not like the cable you are trying to use.
I have the above described setup but I am able to select Digital Output in Sound Preferences. The volume control is greyed out for some reason but does not have a circle with the cross through it so I just control the volume via the receiver itself. iTunes still allows me control of volume, as do other video/audio controls in the web browser etc, it's just the main OS X volume control that is inaccessible.
    Strange, but liveable.

  • Connecting apple tv2 to a projector, but need to use optical from apple tv to connect to something, to get sound.. What do I buy

Ive got an apple tv, and a new hd projecter. I've now got a huge lovely picture on the wall, but I've zero sound.... The projector has no output for sound, and is conected by hdmi...which leaves me with one option. Using the optical out from apple tv, now i have no idea.  Will this optical output work when hdmi is sending sound to projector ?  What I need is the best option to use optical out.. I would have prefered a simple phono out, and then I can plug into a big active speaker im using in the room, I owne nothing with optical connections... So what do buy ?  Ric

Ok,  I will ask the question in another way... My apple tv has one hdmi, and it goes to my hd projecter.. But projecter has no speakers, and as a result I've no sound at the moment. I am looking for a clear direction to go in, to solve lack the of any sound.. My only option seems to be, using the optical out from the apple tv.. I don't have  any equipment with this conecter. And I've never used optical before..   If i buy an, optical to twin phono converter and then I can plug into a large powered speaker I've got in my living room. And I will have big sound easily..?? Do I have any other reasonable options for optical enabled speakers, or AirPlay speakers or something simple I'm not aware of that will give me sound easily.. I don't want a messy 5:1 system, my house is very tidy, and I want to keep it that way. .  Only having this optical out is frustrating, and I need to get my head round the options I have.   Anyone understand from experience how to use the optical apple tv out.  Also, not  using anything but apple tv, no dvds, or tv , just apple tv and my ipad.. Is very quiet in my home right now though.  Ric

  • Noise on optical output from Airport Express

I have an almost new Airport Express (actually as an extension of my old AE) which I use for streaming music to my HiFi. At first I used the analogue output for my amplifier, without any problem. But now I have installed a HiFi D/A converter (Rega) and started using the optical output from my AE. It plays fine, but now and then (like 2-3 times per track) there is a noise appearing, like a pulse of 3-6 beats. Could be external noise, but it is only there when I play music. Anyone have any idea ??

Hi, nice to know I am not the only one with this problem (did not log on for a while...)
The problem is also that one doesn't really know which part to blame. I guess anywhere you go with your problem they would say it is something else. And the guys in the Apple store don't have knowledge at this level, they are just trained to sell.
I am sorry to hear that you had to give up and return to the analogue input. Which means that you are using the D/A converter built into the Airport.
Are you saying that you were using the digital output from your old Airport into your Rega DAC without any problem ? If you feel sure about that it must be the new type of Airport that has a problem.

  • Multichannel optical output unavailable (gray)

    Multichannel optical output unavailable (gray)
    Hello
I can not have an output multichannel audio in 5.1 (or 7.1) for the parameter digital output built-in "configure speakers" I stay in stereo.
    Multichannel is gray
I am using the Apple DVD player DTS and DD 5.1 but
Why with the numérique optical output is not able to access the settings multichannel sound 2.0 digital audio output domme the parmetres Apple's program "audio midi"
    xavier

It appears that my underlying question is whether Apple will either add digital pass through to Quicktime or to the system. My main need for 5.1 surround with Quicktime is for Divx files. Once you install the Divx software, Quicktime can play Divx files (such as rips of my DVDs), which can be recorded with 5.1 surround using AC-3.
On a related note, I see that this free AC-3 codec for Quicktime was just released. <http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/27300> Both this and the Divx codec are now available as Universal Binaries.
Am I right in thinking that I could use the AC-3 codec to play 5.1 surround if I used external firewire hardware, but I can't do it with the built-in S/PDIF port? If so, that seems like something Apple needs to fix.

  • 10.7.2 and still no optical output???

    Hi everyone,
I'm running Lion 10.7.2 (Build 11C74) and I still have the same problem with my optical output. Everytime I connect the cable I got in System Preferences/Sound:
    Name: Headphones
    Type: Headphone port
    No red light, no sound!
I think I've tried almost all the solutions from the forums, but nothing is working.
Does anyone has any ideea how to get my optical output back? And without downgrade.
    Tnx,
    Andrei

The DHCP settings have come back, but how to manage NAT at the latest Server version 2.1.1?
    The Apple document reads,
"Important: Do not enable Internet Sharing if you have configured custom settings for the DHCP service in OS X Server. Any existing DHCP settings will be overwritten if you enable Internet Sharing in the Sharing pane of System Preferences."
If so, the new DHCP settings will be useless if you use Internet Sharing (NAT).
How to use NAT and DHCP server at the same time on a Mac OS X Server 10.8?

  • OS X Lion - Optical output

Since i have installed OS X Lion, VLC doesn't not recognize the encoded output from my speakers (Logitech Z5450), no sound.
    And then the software crashes.
    Can anybody help me ?
    Thank You

Not so fast, Jamesy90, has the 10.7.1 release really solved the problem for you?
Your source, the VideoLAN Forums, now has a thread entitled,
New Lion Update (10.7.1) Still Doesn't Fix VLC Optical Out
I guess we'll all have to wait until Lion's next update?
It's hard to understand why Apple provides optical outputs (or jacks to plug our Apple earbuds into) so we can play the iTunes we buy from that company... and yet all that stuff doesn't even work for many of us at the moment.
Will people stop buying computers, earpieces, or music from Apple until the company fixes this?  I would feel kind of gypped if I bought a new 12-core MacPro for $5000, then found out the sound didn't work with its installed software.
Heck, I might just ask for my money back!

  • Optical Output for iTouch 4?

Does anyone know if acompany makes an iTouch4 cradle or cable that would accept a digital optical cable for audio? MP3's are digital, doesn't make much sense to use Analog cables from the iTouch to a digital sound system. [email protected]

    Just saw this post.
I have the same complaint with iPad output. It's tough to get a straight answer from Apple about the quality of the output from the dock connector.
    1. From what I can find, the headphone jack does not give real Line Out quality. It sounds pretty good through good headphones but not to run a good stereo set.
    2. I have had difficulty finding out what quiality the "Line Out" signal is from the Apple dock for iPad/iPhone.
    3. The HDMI connector from the iPad will support digital audio and should work well according Bang and Olafsen.
    4. You can get OPTICAL output from the Airport Express but I'm not sure how to set it up as a hub WITHOUT needing a connection to the full internet. Anyway you can connect an iPad to a correctly set up Airport Express and play iTunes to it and then it feeds your stereo. This is about $100  but a cable connector (if it existed) would be on the order of $50 so this isn't too bad. I don't have the link on how to do it but I did see it. I'll try to post it.
    Cheers!

  • Optical output: 192/24

Can the Mac Mini output 192kHz 24bit audio from the optical output? How is it configured as within Audio Midi there isn't a selection for 192kHz.

    Hi musicalsound-
Greetings and welcome to the Apple boards
The reason that there is no selection is that the Mini is not capable of outputting audio at 192kHz.
    Luck-
