No option for headphones on system preferences

I am new to mac and I cannot find how to change sound output to headphones.  I have reviewed system preferences and the only option showing is 'internal speakers'.

That is correct. The option does not become available until you plug in the headphones. Then from System Preferences > Sound > Output you will be able to select your headphones as identified there. Well done.

  • I am not able to set up iCloud on my MBP. I do not find any option for iCloud in system preferences. Is there any new version of Lion after 10.7.1 which supports iCloud.

    Please help

I have 10.7.1 and when I try to update, it says all updates are completed.
Will I be able to update ever?  I find it odd many people have 7.2 but I can't get it.
Also I've updated everything on my ipad2 and it also does not have any icons with icloud on them.
    Uggh.

  • Why can't I see an option for ethernet in System Properties?

My wife has just got a new MacBook Pro from work. The wi-fi is working fine, but the ethernet is not. There isn't even an option for it in System Properties. Any thoughts? Is it just a setting that's wrong or do I need to send it back?

    Hi Peggyh,
If you're a paying Creative Cloud member, you may not see Lightroom in the Creative Cloud if your computer doesn't meet the minimum system requirements. Check to make sure that your system meets the http://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/system-requirements-lightroom.html
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/aam-lists-removed-apps-date.html may also work.
Let me know if it helps.

  • Unable to open AirPort options sheet in Network System Preference

    Hi there,
There are several posts (and a Radar bug number, 4273111) reporting a certain difficulty with systems that have been upgraded to Tiger. For some reason: When viewing the AirPort network interface in the Network system preference, certain installations do not allow one to open the "Options" sheet.
    To reproduce:
    1. Open System Preferences.
    2. Click on the Network system preference.
    3. Show -> AirPort.
    4. Click the "Options" button.
Normally, this should open an options sheet. However, on three separate systems I've encountered that have been upgraded to 10.4.x from earlier versions of Mac OS X (Jaguar to Panther to Tiger), the sheet does not open at all. Console reports the following when the button is clicked:
    2006-11-07 09:55:22.206 System Preferences[379] * Assertion failure in -[PreferencesApp _commonBeginModalSessionForWindow:relativeToWindow:modalDelegate:didEndSelector :contextInfo:], AppKit.subproj/NSApplication.m:3057
2006-11-07 09:55:22.229 System Preferences[379] Modal session requires modal window
I've tried replacing the following items (then repairing permissions after each attempt) with a known-good copy from another 10.4.x system (same OS version/build in each case—as of this post, tested through 10.4.8), without effect:
    /Applications/System Preferences.app
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/
    /System/Library/PreferencePanes/Network.prefPane
    /System/Library/Frameworks/Preferences.framework
I've seen references to a similar error in Safari that was able to be fixed with a reinstall of Safari—apparently, something corrupted in WebKit.framework. I'm presuming something similar would work here (and it's been reported that an Archive and Install will fix the problem, but that's certainly overkill to correct such an issue).
I've got clients that are not happy about this and the problem has apparently been documented for well over a year now. The following Discussions threads cover it as well:
    "can't open airport options"
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1125018
    "Network system preferences stuck"
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1123291
    "Airport Preferred Networks"
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=722797
I'm happy to lend whatever troubleshooting assistance I can, so if anyone else out there can similarly recommend files I might try replacing that I've not already mentioned here, or any other information that could be helpful, I'd certainly appreciate it!
    Thanks much,

  • Energy Saver Options Tab missing from System Preferences Pance

Recently I upgraded with Combo Update Snow Leopard 10.6.2 on my Mac Pro and now I find that I have no Options Tab in the Energy Saver Pane of System Preferences. All the options that used to be available there cannot now be accessed. Sleep\Wake is functioning fine, and I can't remember what settings I had or even used. It has not been critical for me so I rarely check these options. It is possible that the tab disappeared when I applied the latest Security Update a few days ago - I'm not sure. Since the big weekend storm here I want to use the automatic restart after power failure feature that I think lived behind that tab. Thanks for any help.

I should say that I rarely, if ever, use the lower missing options mentioned above. If I am accessing the Mac Pro from my other local computers I just wake up the Mac Pro. And I can't ever remember wanting my computer to restart after a power failure. If we have a power failure in this area, it is likely to come back on and then just as suddenly go off again. Not a good thing, I would imagine, for delicate electronics. Usually I wait 30 minutes to an hour after the power resumes in my home before powering up any electronic equipment.
I do wonder why the options disappeared though.

  • Unable to access Login Items for Accounts in System Preferences

I've created an image for computers at my school. When I go into System Preferences>Accounts, and authenticate, I am unable to access the Login Items tab. The tab isn't grayed out or anything. It's just that when I click on it, nothing happens. It stays on the Password tab. The only way I can get out of it is to quit System Preferences. Any ideas?

If you are connecting to a OS X Server, make sure that you're not managing Login Items (Click on Preferences in WorkGroup Manager, then Login, then the Items tab). I had the same problem and setting that preference to Never solved it for me.

  • ICloud Account Keeps Asking for Password in System Preferences

I am extremely frustrated with iCloud. I'm on Lion 10.7.3.
    Two main issues:
System Preferences, iCal, and Contacts keeps asking for my iCloud account password over and over again. It will not retain the password whne I type it in. I know the password is correct because when I type it in everytime the services update and retain the password until I log out and log back in.
I tried to delete the iCloud account and set it up again to see if that would fix the issue, but I cannot delete the account. In System Preferences I have tried to delete the account using the minus sybmol at the bottom and have tried the "Sign Out" method. The account disappears until I restart System Preferences. I tried deleting the account and rebooting, but it is still there.
Any ideas? I would love to know if there is a way to override all this in Terminal.

I recently lent out my ibook to my father because his M$ machine died. I set up his verizon email. I went in to change the font settings under preferences and all the options except account were non existent. I set him up with a standard user account. I then checked my settings under admin and i could see all options. I then changed him to an admin account and tried to change the font setting in his mail, still no other options. What am i missing here? I am up to date on downloads, can you help me?

Sounds like the Preferences toolbar is closed on Accounts.
Go to Mail > Preferences and at the top right of the Preferences window is a clear pill shaped button. Selecting this button closes/opens the complete Preferences toolbar.

  • There is no "find my iPhone" option in the system preferences iCloud window on my iMac.

It is turned on (as are location services) on my iPhone? and there is a "find my mac" option in the iCloud system preferences window but no "find my iPhone"? All is up to date! All is turned on! Thanks.

There is no Find my... app for Mac. The "Find my Mac" service allows your Mac to be found, but is not actually an app. To view the location of your devices, you have to go to http://icloud.com. This is the computer equivalent of Find my iPhone.

  • In system preferences I can not change my wallpaper; it just freezes

I need help; today I went to change my wallpaper and the system preferences froze; I did everything from repair disk to safe boot and still it is frozen; have the new Mountain Lion system.  also in my preference folder there is no list for desktop or system preferences; what is going on?

First follow the instructions in this support article:
System Preferences stops responding after viewing Desktop & Screen Saver pane
If there's no change, continue as below.
In the Finder, hold down the option key and select
    Go ▹ Library
from the menu bar. From the Library folder, delete the following item, if it exists:
    Caches/com.apple.systempreferences
and move the following item to the Desktop:
    Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
Launch System Preferences and test. If you still have the issue, put the item on the Desktop back where it came from and post again. Otherwise, delete the item.

  • Bluetooth disappeared from system preferences and menu bar...

My bluetooth preferences disappearead from system preferences as well as the menu bar. I discovered this because my bluetooth mighty mouse stopped working. I tried replacing the batteries but nothing happened. I used my trackpad to click on the bluetooth icon on my menu bar and told it to connect to my mouse, which was there in the list. I got the swirling ball and so restarted my computer, when it came back, bluetooth was gone from the menu bar and system preferences, so now I don't know how to reconnect my mouse.
I tried resetting the PRAM and NVRAM as recommended by another post, I tried it twice as the instructions outline, but I haven't had any success.
I have tried doing spotlight for bluetooth in system preferences, this takes me to keyboard and mouse, then I get this message:
"The Bluetooth tab of Keyboard & Mouse preferences is hidden because you don't have a Bluetooth module installed or attached to your computer."
When I do a spotlight on the entire system, I get a result for bluetooth in system preferences, when I click on that, I get this message:
"You cannot open “Bluetooth” preferences pane because it is not available to you at this time. You might need to connect a device to your computer to see this preferences pane."
But, the irony is, that I can't connect a bluetooth device without this option in preferences. Also, in utilities, I remember that there used to be a bluetooth setup assistant, and that is not longer there.
I realize other threads have come up on this, but I haven't found anything besides deleting the plist, restarting, and resetting the PRAM and NVRAM (whatever that is). I've tried this but haven't been successful so I'm looking for more ideas.
    Dan

    HI Daniel,
    Try deleting this file.
    com.apple.preferencepanes.cache
    ~/Library/Caches.
Move that file to the Trash and restart your Mac.
If that doesn't help, download and install the 10.5.8 combo update available here.
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate
It's ok to do this even though you are already running 10.5.8.
Make sure and repair disk permissions after the installation.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • The "Play feedback when volume is changed" system preference is broken

I don't want to hear the feedback sound when I change the volume, but my Mac stubbornly insists that I should!
If I uncheck the "Play feedback when volume is changed" option in the Sound System Preferences pane, it works for a while. Some time later, when I change the volume using the keyboard keys, it ticks again. I have to check and uncheck the preference to get it to shut up... for a while.
Also, I noticed it always ticks when I change the volume while Quicktime is opening a movie. If I wait until it has opened it, it doesn't tick anymore.
This annoying problem started, as far as I can remember, from day zero.
I fixed the also annoying balance drifting problem with http://www.whamb.com/balanced. Is there anything like that that will kill the volume change feedback sound and make sure it stays dead permanently?
    Thanks!

This is happening to me too. The volume makes the noise, and when I open system preferences, "play feedback when..." is UNCHECKED which means it should not be making the noise. But I too have to check it and uncheck it in order for the sound to stop playing.
Why isn't it saving my setting?
