  • Problems with microphone sound in iChat

    Hello Ralph,
(I already thought I sent this but I didn't see it as a new topic, so I am trying again). I'm new to this discussion thing, it's my first time so I hope I've submitted this correctly.
I have similar, but extended and more complicated problems with "microphone sound in iChat". (Sorry, this email is a bit lenghty becuase I have already done a lot of my homework on trouble shooting this.)
I began by using iChat with a high impedance microphone (from an old 1970'scassette player) PLUGGED DIERCTLY IN THE THE MICROPHONE INPUT on the back of my G4 tower. (I DO NOT have a video camera). My Mom in Canada can hear me okay on it, only if I "eat" the microphone. (My Mom DOES have a video camera).
SO I BOUGHT AN iMic. I also bought a new condenser mic to go with my new iMic. I plugged iMic in and adjusted the sound preferences selection. I switched the iMic to "Mic". It did not work. The old cassette mic did not work at all with iMic either. My Mom could not hear me, and my "VU METER bar levels" on my iChat were not registering. (If I plug the condenser mic directly into the tower, Mom can hear me only if I "eat" the condenser microphone).
Next, with iMic, I wanted to try my Shure 58 microphone instead. My friend (who is an audio tech) made me a 1/8" to XLR (sheilded) cable. I made sure I had adjusted the sound preferences and switched the iMic to "Mic". The Shure 58 did not work with iMic. It also did not work plugging directly into the tower.
Next, with iMic, I wanted to try my "Plantronics telephone headset". My friend (the audio tech) then made me a 1/8"male to 1/8"mini feamle (sheilded) cable. My headset did not work with iMic. It also did not work plugging directly into the tower.
My friend, the audio tech, then made me second cable 1/8"male to 1/8"female (sheilded) cable. This cable I had him make 50 feet long so I could move to other areas in my home while audio chatting - so I don't have to be trapped in my office while talking. We ran the cable from iMic to the Old cassette mic and the new condenser mic. They did not work with iMic.
We also tried plugging the new 50ft cable directly into the back of the G4 Tower and it worked with the old cassette mic and the new condenser mic, BUT the volume was reduced and there was a loud baseball game being broadcast through the cable - according to my Mom. I could not hear anything from my end - not my own voice and not the baseball game! IS THERE A WAY FOR ME TO MONITOR (actually hear) THE SOUND THAT SHOULD BE COMING THROUGH THE MIC?
I have tried to trouble shoot these issues on line, but can't seem to find the right solutions. In one of your discussions I read that you suggested to select the iChat preference for Video and select microphone. I CANNOT SEE THE FULL WINDOW UNDER iChat Video Preferences!!!! All I can see is the top half of a large empty box that says "There is no camera attached to this computer". (That's because I have no camera, but I DO HAVE a microphone).
I also found some support about adjusting microphone levels using iMovie. I do not have iMovie on my Mac.
Yes, I have already adjusted the AUDIO MIDI SETUP settings.
My audio tech friend and I are both baffled. iMic is useless to me so far - perhaps you can help to get me up and chatting properly? Do I really need iMovie and/or a video camera to fix this???
BY THE WAY: When I plug my external speakers into iMic and select iMic in preferences for output, my speakers and sound is very inferior to the using the speaker terminal on my tower. i Mic is supposed to better???????
Thanking you for your help in advance,
    Marlene

    Hi Ralph,
    A funny thing just happened...
The iChat prefernce window for "VIDEO" finally opened (!!) all the way, so for the FIRST TIME EVER and I was able to see the microphone setting at the bottom of the window. (Because I have NO CAMERA, the window would never fully open before during the 100 or so times I tried to get it to open before. This must've been a fluke because now it won't fully open again).
While it was open I set the microphone setting to iMic, plugged my condenser mic into iMic and IT WORKED. Then I tried the long (baseball game) extension cord in the iMic (attached to the condenser mic) and IT WORKED TOO - with NO BASEBALL GAME!
I still have to have the condenser mic right up to my mouth, which shouldn't be - but considering I have spent a few weeks trying to troubleshoot this, "eating the mic" is only a minor annoyance at this point.
I just plugged my speakers into iMic and THEY WORK GREAT!
SO ALL MY PROBLEMS WERE BECAUSE: I could not set the microphone under Video in iChat preferences because the VIDEO PREFERENCE WINDOW DOES NOT FULLY OPEN WITHOUT A CAMERA ATTACHED. If it hadn't opened by fluke my iMic would still not be working.
I guess I'm all set now. Unless you have a suggestion why the condenser mic isn't picking up my voice from other than right by my mouth? It should be able to be a foot or two away at least.
    Thanks Ralph,
    Marlene
(By the way, I never did trash the com.apple.ichat.plist)

  • No sound from iChat

I have no sound coming from iChat. No sound when I sign on, get IMed, send a message or anything. I've already checked the settings and there all checked to make sound. And no my computer isn't muted. What's going on here?
    --Thanks

Ben, your link does not seem to work for me.
Also, I have been experiencing this same problem concerning system alert sounds. While music plays, I am unable to hear sounds from iChat, mail, or system sounds like folder movements or the trashcan. I can hear music and other audio files as well as alert sounds from iChat in the alert menu.
So far I have done the following in this order:
Checked the iChat preferences and turned off and back on all the alert sounds.
Checked the Sound preferences and turned the alert sounds volume to maximum.
Quit and restarted iChat more than once.
Killed coreaudiod in Terminal using "sudo kill 35" after getting the process number form the activity monitor.
NONE of these have been successful. Furthermore, after killing coreaudio, when I rebooted a small square with an earth in it blinked on my screen for a fairly long duration (30, 45 seconds?) before the normal startup processes began. I can see coreaudio running again in the Activity Monitor. I just tried force quitting it through the Activity Monitor, but my sounds are still missing.
Is there another solution for me to try? And what about this blinking globe? I am hesitant to try further UNIX commands for fear of not knowing how to undo my actions. I am about to reboot a second time to see if the globe occurs again, and I will update. Any new advice would be welcomed.

  • No incoming or outgoing sound

The old messages do not seem to cover my problem exactly. I have
been using Skype for probably over five years, many hours per day every day.
Today I can make calls but there is no incoming sound and no outgoing sound (not much of a call!). I have some important e-mail messages to play but I can't hear them. Plus I have a lot of calls to make. The sound on other applications works fine. I have tried Manage Sound in my control panel to change to different devices. The other
sound devices also work with other applications, but not with Skype. I have
uninstalled Skype and then reinstalled to no avail. Then I just tried
reinstalling over the existing Skype, and that didn't work either. I have shut
down and restarted my computer several times.
I am using Windows Vista 64 bit. I get all of the automatic
updates. I do not know how to update my sound drivers as suggested earlier (I
don't know what sound drivers I have or how to find out), but I doubt that is
the problem. I do not know how to install a beta version for my operating
system (Windows Home Vista 64), if that is what I need to do.
Please help me! (This has been a very frustrating day trying to solve this problem.)
    Thanks.

  • Iphone 5 poor outgoing sound quality

Don't want to sound stupid but I am getting complaints that I sound like I am inside a tunnel. I tested my iphone5 and outgoing sound quality is up and down. for a few seconds it is normal then it drops and then again normal and drops again, like a wave. Any sugestion? Anybody experienced it?

We finally gave up on the iphone 5. I think it is a dud. We started to address our issues by speaking to Verzion tech support. They recommended a reboot / restore of the phone. No joy. They passed us on to Apple. Apple thought I was crazy, but replaced the phones. Ten minutes later, was still having the same issues described in an earlier post. Over time, they became more prominent. Worked with Apple support over the phone and email. Worked with a more senior technician and even he became baffled by the problems, but atleast acknowledged that their was growing evidence their was a problem. Apple could provide no solutions to any of the 4 issues I posed, nor could they provide a timeline for an OS update that might resolve some of the problems. After listening to crappy calls for more than a month and having my ear pop no less than three times a day on phone calls, we finally threw in the towel. Apple / Verizon could do nothing but recommend reset processes and genius bar appointments to consider replacement. How many times do you have to replace it to acknowledge that a problem exist in the device, not just one of the devices??? Verizon agreed to free us of our contract and we returned the phones to the vendor, albeit for a very reduced restocking fee. We couldn't get them to agree to nothing given all the technical issue we'd had; but honestly, it was worth the nominal fee to be done with it. We went back to AT&T and decided not to risk the iphone 5 even on their network. We went with the Samsung Galaxy SIII and it has been great. Great sound, great speaker, great functionality, no popping, fluid messagin, etc. No complaints. The iphone 5 was / is just plain disappointing when you take a step back and look at the what Apple has done, and then compare it to the Galaxy. Apple is losing its edge fast; and that's coming from someone who owns an iMac, Macbook pro, iPad, ipod, and 2 ipod touches. Look at the new touches... same thing different shape. How inventive.

  • Sound on ichat video not working

my friend just recently got herself a macbook and we decided to try the video on ichat but the problem is, i can hear her but she can't hear me and i don't know what's wrong. what dshould i do?

    Hi,
    Jan has highlighted one place.
Also check the Video menu item "Microphone Enabled" ahs a tick next to it.
Check iChat > Preferences > Video section after doing Jan's bit.
Does the green Response bar move here when you talk ?
Does the Microphone listed in the drop down match the one in System Preferences > Sound ?
After that make sure System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming tab is set to 1.5Mbps in the drop down and restart iChat.

  • No sound in iChat

Any thoughts as to what may have caused sound to disappear on my wife's MacBook Pro? We were in the middle of a video chat and all of the sudden her sound went away such that I was no longer able to hear her (video was fine) but she could still hear and see me. I have since checked the sound preferences and the input is the Built-in mic. We tried doing a video chat with Skype and sound was fine both ways so this appears to be a limited issue with iChat. Also tried rebooting the computer and nothing changed. Thanks for any suggestions.

I would check the usual suspects.
System Preferences > Sound > Input must be turned Up high enough and have the same devices selected as iChat > Preferences > Video Section > Microphone drop down.
The Microphone Enabled item in the Video menu should also be ticked and active.
In the View menu of iChat the Show Audio Status should be active.
The Mic should be plugged in (reseating is always a good Idea).
And if it has one a the On Switch should be On.
During a chat the Mute Button should be black and not highlighted

  • Can't get Mail to make an incoming or outgoing sound.

My Powerbook G4. Now running Leopard on new hard drive 10.5.8 and I can't get the glass sound (or any) to work when mail comes in. Or the whoosh sound when I send. I went to preferences in Mail and checked the right box but still nothing happens. Any ideas how to fix it? Or I'm I overlooking something?

I found this in another discussion and IT WORKED!!! "My problem was solved by turning on the "play user interface sounds" in system preferences which had somehow been turned off."

  • Samsung smart tv outgoing sound not working

Logged into Skype, made a call and could hear the other party but the person at the other end could not hear me. it was not a videall all as I have not purchased the webcam. Can someone tell me how can I make it work?

The microphone is built into the special Samsung TV camera so you will not be able to send audio without the TV camera.

    Hello John,
    Try here....
    iChat > Preferences > Alerts.
You can change / de-select the sounds for all the actions there.
    Hope that helps some.

    Ian

  • All sound effects for AIM in iChat do not work

I tried to see if anything was muted in System Prefrences, and everything seemed OK. When I test the sounds in iChat preferences, they seem to work fine, but when I am instant messaging they do not work. Any assistance would be appreciated.

    Hi Parker244,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions
Do you have Developer Tools installed ?
This would let you look at the .plists with Property List Editor and you could see if the sounds were set in com.apple.ichat.plist
If not delete it anyway and restart iChat.
It is in Users/(Your Mac account)/Library/preferences

    Hi,

  • IChat chat sounds not working anymore

About a week ago, the sounds for iChat stopped sounding. This includes when I log-in, receive and send messages, etc. I check preferences, and all of those are enabled. I do have Chax installed, but it was still working for a while. Any suggestions?

    Hi HalfHazzard,
The Alerts that you have set either globally in the iChat preferences or indvidually in the Buddy list are stored in one of the iChat .plists so it may be a good time to delete this .plist and possibly reset them.
The one in question is com.apple.ichat.plist
It is found in /users/(your account)/Library/Preferences
Delete with iChat active and then restart iChat.
If it does not work this way then delete it with iChat shut down.
