No partition option in disk utility

I'm using 10.4.11 and Disk Utility 10.5.6 and see no "Partition" option in the DU menu. The DU version on the Tiger install disk is 10.5

As brody cryptically suggests - you can't format the drive you have booted with.
Got to boot with another drive or the install CD/DVD.
Also, to partition, you furst have to format (erase) the disk.
Also suggest you consider downloading the OS X 10.4.11 combo update

You could try repairing permissions with disk utility, I don't think you will have the option to repair the drive but you could verify it.
This may help you delete the files that DU made but did not remove when erasing the free space.

When you get your SL disk it will not have the iLife applications, that would have been on the second install disk that should have been with the computer. A search of the forums will confirm or deny this.
As to whether a clean install will cure your problem, i.e. partition the HDD and install I would expect it to be yes, but there are no guarantees it is an old machine.

I would make a bootable clone of my internal disk volume on partition B. The clone will provide a fail safe mechanism for disaster recovery. If you decide to do so, then the partition should be GUID.
As far as I know, you cannot run Windows from an external drive even if using Boot Camp. I would put Boot Camp/Windows on a partition of your internal drive. When you want to set up you Boot Camp partition, just follow the instructions of the Boot Camp Assistant. Do not format FAT under any conditions. You want to use NTFS.

I would not go this route. You do not want to use FAT. The best approach is to install MacDrive (mediafour.com) on you Windows system. If you do so then the 3rd partition can be Mac OS X extended (journaled), and both you Windows and OS X machines will be able to read and write the partition.

Using Disk Utility, create 1 partition with partition table GUID. After doing so, your partition should be formatted Mac OS X extended (journaled). If it isn't, then format (i.e., erase) it this way. Change your partition to 3 GUID. Selecting the sizes you want.

1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
4. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and click on the Erase button. Wait for volume to remount on the Desktop.
5. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
6. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
7. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
8. Select the destination drive icon on the Desktop and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. At the bottom in the Ownership and Permissions section be sure the box labeled "Ignore Permissions on this Volume" is unchecked.
9. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.

There is a checkbox option in the Restore dialog to Erase the Destination. Be sure you uncheck the option.

How do I undo BC Partition repair in disk utility?

Here's the summary:
8-core MacPro2,1 running 10.6.8, Paragon NTFS for Mac, Bootcamp Win7.
4 internal HDD drives: two 1.5TBs for data, one 1TB for MacOS, one 1.5TB for Win7 bootcamp.
I mostly use the Mac side for music production (but rarely), and the Win side for business and everything else. Scores and scores of Win apps installed over the years. [4 monitor system], well over 500K files on the drive.
I just backed up the data from the two data-only drives, and made a bootable clone of the MacOS drive (SuperDuper). I have never successfully been able to clone the Win7 Bootcamp NTFS drive (even with Winclone back in 2009) because of volume sizes (or something). I decided to try again, from WITHIN Windows this time (all other attempts were from the Mac OS side).
I bought, downloaded, and installed Acronis True image from within the Win7 bootcamp system. [I obviously did not know that it was gonna modify my MBR, and I had no idea at the time that the GPT and MBR areas were somehow 'mingled' on a bootcamp drive.]
So, when I performed the Acronis-requested reboot (my default boot is into the Bootcamp/Win7 drive), it failed to boot and requested some Windows recovery media or something. I was concerned that anything i put in the DVD drive would sabotage my priceless (in retrospect) stable/optimized Win7 bootcamp system. So, i just hard-powered down the Mac and tried to restart.
I did the Alt/option key, and i was presented with the Mac or Win drive icons. I selected Win, and then I got a different boot error message--'no MBR found'.
But this time i realized that Acronis had stepped where it shouldn't have, and I figured the Mac side could fix the boot problem (maybe with bootcamp assistant or something).
If i had stopped THERE, and searched the forums i could have found how to fix THAT problem--that has been answered tons of times…
But, instead, i went to Disk Utility and asked it to repair my Bootcamp partition (I have Paragon NTFS and it has worked for years, and so I did not have a reason to doubt Disk Utility's ability to Repair an NTFS volume--not that i have tried it before, of course).
Disk Utility repair ran for about 10-15 minutes and said it fixed about 10-20 things.
The drive information (in the side bar and below) still had the BOOTCAMP partition, reported that it was NTFS, said that there was 308 GB still available of the 1.5TB drive, and that it contained 1.19TB 'used'. Looked normal to me.
I closed Disk Utility and then opened a Finder window to see if DU left any 'artifacts' of its 'fixes' on the BOOTCAMP partition, and all the files were gone! Even though DU said it had 1.19TB 'used', all of my files are gone. [I rebooted also, to verify that it was not some 'delayed reporting' issue.]
When I enable 'hidden files' to show, what I get on the Bootcamp partition are these three entries:
.DS_Store (16KB), .fseventsd folder (with a 1KB UUID file inside it), and a .Trashes folder with zero KB.
At this point, I panic and assume the position of despair. There is no 'undo' key for the D/U that I can find. I do an orderly shut down of the system, physically remove the Win7 BC drive, and make/verify a sector-by-sector clone of the drive (on a Win7 laptop, using Acronis--22 hours).
In Win7 Disk Management, the GPT partition (on the original drive) shows up and the BOOTCAMP partition shows up--with the proper size--but windows does NOT recognize the partition as being NTFS. It reports it as being RAW and 'urges' me to format it (yeah, right…).
So, I place the sector-by-sector duplicate back into the Mac, boot up (only the Mac OS is given as an option), and am ready to 'work on' recovering the Win7 BC partition (if possible).
I am avoiding trying to fix the booting problem, because recovery of the 1.2TB of a working system is much more critical for me.
The clone HDD reports the same in DU, except now the GPT partition shows up as greyed-out 'disk1s1', right above the "BOOTCAMP" partition in the sidebar. [I understand from researching this that disk1s1 is somehow related to the bootloader for BC?]
I used the demo version of Data Rescue 3 to scan for recoverable files from the drive, but it doesn't even report the .files. (I am running the deep scan now, but will take about another 9 hours to complete that).
Has anybody got any suggestions on how to reclaim this partition and its system?

My partition menu in Disk Utility is greyed out in recovery partition

So upgraded to yosemite and after a while decided that i would do a clean install of it because it didn't update the recover partition and i could no longer boot into Ubuntu partition. So i made my bootable drive and booted into it. I was met with:
When i clicked on the hard drive in the sidebar that it was only 300gbs, which is the size of my os x partition.
I then went to the partition menu and i could not change anything there. I can't resize anything or repartition anything.
I've tried to do multiple things in terminal from recovery and bootable disk but to no avail. It still won't work. The thing is that when i type diskutil list into terminal i get

/dev/disk0 is the internal hard drive that i want to reformat, /dev/disk1 i don't know what that is. It could be an internal thing in the drive? And /dev/disk2 is my external hard drive that is running mavericks that i writing this on.
I've tried resetting PRAM and SMC but that didn't help.
Didn't know if reinstalling the OS would help?
What i want to get is to reformat /dev/disk0 so that i have a 500gb hard drive that i can then do a clean install of yosemite on and then possibly make an ubuntu partition later. PLEASE HELP!!!

If your model came with Lion pre-installed then it is capable of using Internet Recovery. If it came with a late version of Snow Leopard it can be upgraded via a firmware update. Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
            if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Once the Utility Menu appears select Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. Now try removing the partition again. If you have the same error, then do the following:
From the screen's menubar select Terminal from the Utilities menu. Enter the following at the prompt:
     diskutil list
Press RETURN. You should see a display of your devices. Next enter:
     diskutil unmountDisk force /dev/disk0
Press RETURN. Now, if this works your internal drive should be unmounted. Return to Disk Utility and try the process of removing the partition.

No Erase option in Disk Utility for an SSD Drive!

Hi guys,
Made a time machine copy on a 500gb external hard drive of my 13" MBP with a HDD currently in it.
Then took my 500gb SSD from an old 15" MBP, removed the HDD and put it in my 13" MBP.
Opened up 13" MBP in restore mode. Chose restore from time machine back up.
Choose the time machine external drive as source. Then chose the SSD drive to restore to.
Said it was erasing the drive... Asked for a password...
I typed in my usual password. It then said the SSD drive couldn't be erased.
Took the SSD out and put the original HDD back in.
Plugged the SSD into a firewire 800 caddy to try erase it in disk utility as an external.
This drive will show up in disk utility but the erase option isn't available.
I can repair the disk but it says the disk is perfectly fine.
I can click on the partition option but everything is greyed out and I can't partition it at all.
This drive will now no longer show up on the desktop or finder.
This is driving me crazy!
Just want to erase the SSD, use time machine to restore onto it and get busy.

Basically I wanted to try out Mac OS X Yosemite, so I created a partition on my hard drive. Now, I am trying to remove this partition, because it is no longer needed, but Disk Utility is simply not allowing me to.
I heard there may be a way to solve this using Terminal. Is that possible?

No gui option in disk utility for new hdd in white unibody mbp

Hello,
i replaced the harddisk in my white unibody macbook with an
Samsung Spinpoint M9T 1TB HDD out of a seagate backup portable drive.
disk utility can erase it, and partition it, but it does not show the option to create a GUI partition.
restoring from time machine backup does not work
installer for leopard, from the original dvd states that it needs that.
what can i do?

No partition option in disc utility

Hi all... my first post.
I'm trying to partition a newly purchased Lacie external drive.
I've followed instructions on Help and gone into disc utility, where I am instructed to select the Lacie and then "click partition"
My problem is, that there is no option in my disc utility to partition! I only have "first aid", "repair" and "erase"
Could someone please advise where I'm going wrong?

Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Make sure the drive is connected and on. Then ensure that you are selecting the Lacie Hard Drive and not the Lacie Volume in the drive/volume pane of the Disk Utility window.
The Lacie Hard Drive icon will be directly underneath your Macintosh HD in drive/volume pane of the Disk Utility window.
If the icon you are selecting is a disk and not a volume you will see the partition option.

Unable to secure erase: "Security Options" in Disk Utility greyed out.

Ancient eMac running Leopard. I have moved data to new Mac and am ready to erase old computer and sell/give away.
Went to "Erase" tab in Disk Utilities and both the "Volume Format" option and "Security Options" fields/buttons are greyed out and uneditable. According to instructions, to erase the data I need to select "Security Options" to proceed to erase all the data on my hard drive.
How do I "ungrey" that button? Is there a lock somewhere to unlock? Something to disable first?

You cannot erase the hard drive of the eMac when it is in use. You have to insert the Mac OS X install disk, boot up from there and then erase the disk from the Disk Utility software included.

How to get rid of hidden partitions display in Disk Utility?

Running Snow Leopard I used the Terminal (defaults write com.apple.DiskUtility DUDebugMenuEnabled 1) to enable the Disk Utility Debug Menu. I then turned on the Show Every Partition so I could see the hidden partitions (but grayed out) in the disk/volume list. I then turned off Show Every Partition and they became hidden again. I disabled the Debug Menu using the Terminal (defaults write com.apple.DiskUtility DUDebugMenuEnabled 0). The Debug menu went away, but the hidden partitions still show up again after quitting and restarting DU. Rebooting computer doesn't help either.
It appears that display of all partitions is permanent. Does anyone have ideas on what to do to get back to the default display?

I stumbled on the answer. When I just quit Disk Utility the hidden partitions come back on restarting DU. If I select Close from the File menu, the display of the hidden partitions goes away and doesn't come back after quitting and restarting DU.

Partition Tab Missing: Disk Utility

I've just noticed that the "Partition" tab is missing from Disk Utility.
Suggested correction?

Make sure you have a drive selected, at the left in the left column, not a volume, indented below the drive.

No "Partition" tab in Disk Utility

I want to partition my LaCie external HD, but my version of Disk Utility, in Yosemite, includes only "First Aid, Erase, Restore" tabs; no "Partition." How do I partition my external HD?

You need to select the entire drive and not a partition on it.

No partition button in Disk Utility

Scratchin my head a bit, I am booted from an external FW drive in Tiger and wanted to reformat and partition an internal drive on a G3 tower but I do not see a partition button in 10.5 Disk Utility, I erased the vol and formatted as exended but cannot seem to get to partition, what am I doing wrong?

This old Mac user has been around the block for years and it sometimes still misses the "obvious".
GUI's change but our old brains still process the same old way.
