No pdf thumbnail preview in Windows XP Explorer

I have searched and tried many different fixes to this issue and have had no luck in finding a solution.
I have over 700 PC's that due to a huge security flaw is forcing me to upgrade from our current version of Adobe Reader 8.1.0 to the 'fixed' version of 9.1.3.
Due to the huge number of PC's I have this all being done with automated scripts.  The issue is not with the deployment, but the funcationality of PDF thumbnails.
Once upgraded, the PCs can no longer see a thumbnail view of the PDF's.
Let me start with the method of upgrade.
- I began with creating and admin install of Reader 9.1
- I then applied patch 9.1.2 to that admin install.
- After that I then applied the 9.1.3 patch as well.
- Using the -r option I created an answer file (setup.iss) file for the install.
- I then pushed the installation silently to all the machines.
I thought that this was simply due to the fact that they were upgraded, meaning that the 9.1.3 install had to first remove 8.1.0 and it may not have been done cleanly.  However, I ran the same install on a PC that had NO Adobe products on it whatsoever and yet it still has the same issue even though it is a 'clean' install.
Things I have  tried.
- I have tried uninstalling and re-installing the package.
- I have tried re-creating the Admin Image and re-installing it.
- I have tried associating PDFs with notepad, then back to Adobe Reader.
- I have re-registered the pdfshell.dll file.
- I have run the Repair Installation utility.
My guess is that there has to be a simple registry entry or .dlll file that is causing this.

I have the same issue, currently running acro 9.3 and reader 9.3  under vista pro - I tried de/reinstalling reader but it did not help any. Its a pity there is no support or even any correspondence by acrobat - this forum has more than ten threads dealing with this.
Kind regards,

  • Thumbnail previews in Windows Explorer (Windows 7 64bit)

Is there a way to enable thumbnail previews under Windows Explorer for Acrobat X Pro? I just installed the trial and these are missing.
I know there was a bug in Acrobat 9 which required a third party hack to fix. I had hoped by now this would work correctly. Has this still not been fixed?
    Thanks.

Lol.  Adobe has known about this stupid problem for about 4 years.  Since Vista x64 started gaining popularity.  Acrobat 8.x was the first version where people really started scratching their heads wondering why & when the problem would be fixed.  Then came Acrobat 9.   And now "X".  Still not fixed, well, I'm sure next year we'll have Acrobat 11, so keep holding your breath.

  • PDF Thumnbnail preview PROBLEM (Windows 7 x32)

I have problems now with my adobe reader thumbnail preview.
This started when I had unistall my Adobe Photoshop cs5 white rabbit to replace with Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended. When I uninstalled it with Revounistaller, the thumbnail preview for my pdf files was gone. I tried to do some troubleshootings like:
    1. downloading the Adobe thumbnail 64-bit windows 7 provided by programmers but it wont work since i am a 32-bits user.
    2. uninstalling and reinstalling adobe reader x
    3. reinstalling a previous version of adobe reader
    4. uninstalling and reinstalling adobe photoshop cs5 extended
    5. downloading and installing Foxit reader; it had resolved the problem but when I reboot the PC, the problem just came back
    6.  Downloaded a program that enable thumbnail preview for images like Nikon, PSD files and PDF files
    7. Cleaning the registry with tune up 2012 and manually
and none of these had work and restored back my pdf thumbnail preview.
I have also noticed on my registry
AcroExch.Document cannot be solved by my tuneup. Manually, it cannot be deleted.
Oh, I am so desperate in looking ways on how to solve this. I hope experts of Adobe can help me solve my problem/frustration.
By the way, I am Adobe reader is one of my very useful programs.

  • PDF Thumbnail view in windows explorer

Hi guys, hope you can give me a hand! I`m about to lose my mind here.
I have 4 machines with adobe reader 8.1 installed and in those 4 machines I can see my pdf files as thumnails (they´re books, so I see the cover of each one of them). On my 5th computer not only have I adobe reader 8.1 installed but Adobe Acrobat 8 Standard. But when I select thumbnail view in windows explorer it just does not work.
I`ve tried changing the default program to open pdf files but again all I see it´s a thumbnail alright but it only displays the adobe logo not the first page of the pdf file.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Vista x64 SP1 PDF Thumbnail Previews Missing

I recently loaded Vista Ultimate x64 SP1 on my PC. After installing Adobe Reader 8.1.1, I don't see the thumbnail previews for PDFs in Windows Explorer - only the Adobe icons. How can I get the thumbnail previews?

Since you people are no help, I will log my own attempts to resolve this issue, in case I need to do it again in the future.
I use Foxit Reader for PDF viewing, because it's much better. I installed Adobe Reader 8.1.1 to get my PDF thumbnails in Windows Explorer back. I also have Photoshop CS4 installed. Here are my steps so far:
    1. Ensure that my folders are in "Large Icons" view, make sure "Always show icons..." option is disabled.
    2. Uninstall Foxit Reader & Adobe Reader.
    3. Remove Adobe Reader & PDF file type entries from registry.
    4. Ran Unassoc to remove the PDF file type from Windows.
    5. Ran Disk Cleanup to remove Thumbnail files.
    6. Installed Adobe Reader 8.1.2.
    * At this point, I effectively had a clean install of Adobe Reader. However, my PDF file thumbnails still show up as the stupid Adobe icon.
    7. Ran xplorer2 32-bit in Thumbnail view. My PDF thumbnails show up both in the file explorer view and in the preview pane (Draft and Native).
    8. Ran Adobe Bridge CS4. PDF thumbnails show up there, too. So, at least I now have 2 effective workarounds to Adobe Reader's ridiculous shortcoming.
    9. Ran the 32-bit Windows Explorer. No problem with PDF thumbnails. Hot damn!
    10. Closed 32-bit Windows Explorer. Opened regular Windows Explorer and browsed to the same directory. PDF thumbnails still working.
    11. Browsed to another folder with Windows Explorer. No PDF thumbnails.
    12. Reinstalled Foxit Reader 3.0 so I don't have to suffer through actually using Adobe Reader. Made sure not to set it as the default PDF reader.
    13. Verified thumbnails in 32-bit Explorer still work. They do. *******.
There you have it. 3 separate workarounds. Maybe Adobe will fix this problem in their next release. Maybe they'll also create a PDF reader that isn't 100mb. Don't hold your breath. Thank me and follow my instructions instead.

Hello there I had Acrobat Reader 9 installed on my windows 7. It worked perfectly and showed the thumbnail previews for the files. Most of the time I select the file looking at the thumbnail instead of the file name. But after the automatic updates from Adobe it upgraded the Acrobat reader to 9.2 then suddenly there were no thumbnail previews in the windows explorer. Instead the icon attached in every file came. And also when I right click there is no open with Acrobat reader written instead it only shows open with.
So pls help me out with this its really frurstrating not able to see the thumbnail previews. This has also happened in the past even if I uninstall it and reinstall the thing wont work. Pls give me a solution.

I am having the same problem with Windows Vista.

  • PDF thumbnails/previews incorrect

Since updating to Snow Leopard the thumbnails of my PDF and Illustrator files do not display correctly. It seems to be ignoring any layers that are set to be invisible and makes them visible regardless (please see example screen shots):
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3454522/boxes1.png
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3454522/boxes2.png
    Any ideas?

I admit to not being an expert on PDF/AI, and similar. Both of these files are actually PDF documents. There are very few lines of data that are different between the two. A few of those "lines" aren't lines at all - they are large chunks of binary data.
It appears that Adobe is just using the PDF format as a wrapper for their own proprietary data formats here. Since Adobe makes both Illustrator and Acrobat, they include parts of Illustrator in Acrobat so that it can properly render the "PDF" that is actually Illustrator inside.
So when you save as PDF with that option off, you get a true PDF. When you just save as AI, you get a PDF (which Preview thinks it can display) but really has more data than Preview understands.
Nothing has changed between 10.5 and 10.6. Neither version of Preview can correctly view this file. Since Preview is based on the OS PDF display capabilities, there will be very few tools that can view this data. I could import it with Inkscape, which displays the preview correctly, but seems to lose the layers upon import.

  • PDF file preview in windows 8.1 machine through my application

I developed an application which preview PDf documents. app is working in windows XP, windows 7 machines. But when i run the same application i got "Error HRESULT E_FAIL has been return from a call to a COM component".
Through my application i tried to create object of "Adobe PDF preview handler" CLASS ID = "DC6EFB56-9CFA-464D-44885D7DC193"
Is this handler wont support in windows 8.1?
Is source code available for this?
PS: I can preview the file throught windows previewer.

    Hi,
    Welcome to MSDN.
It seems that this is not the proper forum for this issue, since it is related to third-party.
I found a similar thread in the forums of Adobe
Adobe Community: Acrobat Reader 9.1 ActiveX control problems which shows that :
As for "HRESULT E_FAIL" message, all that was wrong was the "Display PDF in browser" option in
Adobe Reader preferences. It needs to be ticked. A bit weird but considering
that it uses the same OCX in a web browser, it makes some sense."
It seems that installing Reader 9.1 on my development machine and compiling a
new version of the application fixes the problem (at least the second one).
If still no helping, you could post this issue in the forum of that publisher to get dedicated support.
    Thanks for your understanding.

  • Thumbnails for 64bit Windows 7. It is now 2009.

I have been running 64-bit desktop operating systems for 5 years now (yes I started late) including Windows XP 64-bit, Windows Vista 64-bit and now Windows 7 64-bit. For 5 years I have been reading people's posts all over the internet, asking when Adobe will make pdf thumbnail previews in explorer available in a 64-bit environment. (I have also been listening to people screaming for a 64-bit flashplayer for 5 years now).
I have heard many people try to blame it on Windows, but we all know that this is not the case. pdf documents created or downloaded on a 32-bit machine (of any flavour) and then transfered to a 64-bit machine, WILL display as a thumbnail in explorer. pdf documents created or downloaded on a 64-bit machine (of any flavour) WILL NOT display as a thumbnail in explorer.
Like I say, I have only been following this for 5 years now.
Being able to see thumbnails of your pdfs is quite possibly the simplest, and yet one of the most important functions of either acrobat or reader to so amny people.
Can anybody tell me when Adobe will start to support 64-bit operating systems?
After all, it is now 2009 and very nearly 2010.

  • Combine PDFs using Preview in Mountain Lion (other threads read)

I have reviewed several threads about combining PDFs in Mountain Lion.  I will ultimately learn Automator but for now, I have a relatively simple question:
    1) I open multiple PDFs in Preview, one window per PDF
    2) I drag thumbnail pages from documents 2 through n onto document 1 so that it makes one long document.  ie. one unbroken string of pages and not sections within a PDF
Question:  How do I save this combined document without deleting or affecting the first document?
Duplicate causes one of the uncombined documents to pop up with the filename highlighted.  I don't see how to give the combined document a new filename for saning
Rename gives me a file of the three combined documents but the first document disappears
Save overwrites the first document with the combined document
I must be missing something simple.  I recognize that the lack of "Save As" is a sensitive issue but ultimately, that's what I want to do:  Save the combined document with its own filename and have the individual documents intact.

    ncasey88 and Old Toad:
Thank you for your quick responses.  Unfortunately, with both methods, the first PDF gets updated.
e.g. Files are 1.pdf, 2.pdf, 3.pdf, each is one page long, and I open each in its own Preview window.  I drop thumbnails of 2.pdf and 3.pdf onto the thumbnail area of 1.pdf.  I export or print into a file called 123.pdf
Result:  1.pdf and 123.pdf have the same information (all three files).  2.pdf and 3.pdf are unchanged but 1.pdf is three pages long.

  • PDF Thumbnails in Windows explorer...

I have noticed that when you choose thumbnail view in XP or Vista, it only shows a adbove icon instead of an actual pdf thumbnail of th actual document. When reviewing hundreds of PDF's in windows explorer, this is a necessity. Why was this a standard installed option on Adobe 7 and then lost in version 8 and 9. This has to be a program glitch. This is becoming more and more of an important issue in my office as time goes on.
Please note that I AM NOT referring to seeing thumbnail views from within acrobat. This is a simple option that I know how to enable. I need to see them from a ile explorer window.
Thanks so much in advance for any help.

I've had Acrobat 8 on XP for quite some time and all my thumbnails in Explorer were showing the first page, but then a couple of weeks ago I uninstalled some older versions of Acrobat in a bit of a clean up and suddenly I was just left with the icons. Disaster - I too have hundreds of pdf files and seeing the colour of the front page before I open a file saves me so much time.
Loading Reader didn't work for me (sorry Mike) but I found some advice in another thread to try running Repair Acrobat Installation under the help menu, then restarting. Success!!! All my thumbnails are back as I need them.

  • Acrobat Pro 9 - Disable thumbnail preview in PDF file icons on Desktop

After upgrading to Acrobat Pro 9, the file icons of PDF files on my Windows 7  desktop changed to showing a thumbnail preview. I want to get the standard PDF file icon back for all PDF files. Can someone please tell me how?
    Thanks.

Did you ever find an answer for this??? I had the same issue and was searching for an answer. I saw this and since I fixed mine I thought I would tell you what I did. Also, in case someone else finds this and needs an answer.
Opened Windows Explorer -> Tools -> Folder Options
    Go to the View tab
Check "Always show icons, never thumbnails"
    Hit Apply
All your PDF files on your desktop should now show with the generic PDF icon.
Reverse this to get the preview icon "thumbnails".

  • The thumbnails/previews of PDFs created in InDesign CC look dull or cloudy in Bridge CC

The thumbnails/previews of PDFs created in InDesign CC look dull or cloudy in Bridge CC. The actual files are fine and open with the correct rich colors, but the colors don't look as vibrant as they should when viewing in Bridge. It's only PDFs that are affected. The InDesign thumbnails/previews display correctly in Bridge.
This was not happening when I was using CS6. This is only a problem since the upgrade to CC.
Any help you could provide would be appreciated. Thanks!

If you're going to mess with the registry
    - create a restore point http://windows.microsoft.com/en-ie/windows7/create-a-restore-point
    - backup the registry http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/back-up-registry
I absolutely plead with all my heart - don't start changing registry entries unless you know what you're doing - or ask your IT department to take a look.
If you don't have an IT department, then source a good professional that can make these changes.
If any way unsure - then under any circumstances, - do not mess with the registry.
