No permission to copy file (to NAS with AFP support) - extended attributes?
For certain files that I copy from one of my drives to the NAS here (Synology 206j), ever since upgrading to Snow Leopard, Finder's behaviour has changed. It will simply refuse to copy the file, stating that "The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access some of the items."
The source is an external USB drive in Mac OS Extended format, I do have full permissions on the files and in any case the drive is set to ignore ownership.
The target is, like most NASes, in EXT3 format. It's sharing via its own AFP implementation.
I'd have tried repairing permissions, but for whatever reason, it's greyed out on my external drives. Since then I've figured that it was probably not that anyway, which will become apparent:
I tried copying the file via the terminal and it actually worked, but also gave an error: "cp: myfile: could not copy extended attributes to /Volumes/media backup/myfile: Operation not permitted"
This suggests to me that, as expected, the target volume doesn't support extended attributes. But rather than popping up with the message that Leopard did (something along the lines of "your target volume doesn't support extended attributes so your file's metadata may be lost, do you wish to continue") it just aborts instead.
I'm not sure if this is a Snow Leopard problem or a change that Synology need to catch up with. A workaround is to compress the file to ZIP first.
Thought I'd mention it here before trying to report it as a bug somewhere. Anyone else having similar issues, either with a NAS or some other storage, in which case please specify?

Thanks guys, yeah I've been monitoring the netatalk mailing list myself: they're onto the same problem, have come to the same conclusions about it being Extended Attributes and have much better proof of such than I
It looks like they're currently debating the best way to fix it (pretending to support EAs but sending them to a black hole being the quick and dirty way, but I suspect they'll go for implementation)
It'll be a while for sure, but the Synology guys are very good with Mac support so I'm sure they'll apply the update fairly quickly once the netatalk crew get something public. FWIW, I did detect a certain sense of urgency from the netatalk discussions.
Although it's essentially answered, I'll leave the question marked as unanswered in case Apple come up with a better one

I use CineXplayer on my iPad (2) and today have started getting an error message stating I don't have permission to copy files from my hp pavilion 6 across to my iPad. I think I may have accidentally disabled iTunes Helper, but it is running in Task Manager.
I have removed iTunes and re installed. That's a comment in the file. It has no effect at all.

Can't copy files to NAS via smb
I'm trying to move my Logic files to a NAS in a RAID 1 configuration prior to installation of Logic 9. I'm connecting via Samba. However, I'm continually getting this error message after only a few files are copied:
"The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access some of the items."
Going to the first file that did not copy, I can see that I have read/write permission for it. I've repaired permissions, verified disk, etc. with no luck. After numerous failed attempts, I tried copying the files in question to the desktop and it worked fine. I used these NAS drives two weeks ago to make disk images of both my iMac and MacBook prior to loading Snow Leopard, plus I ran built-in utilities on them, so I'm fairly sure they're working correctly.
I searched the forums and didn't see anything exactly like this, so any help you can provide is appreciated.
BI'm having the same problem when trying to copy files to an SMB share on a OpenFiler based NAS. I noticed however, that if the files are in a folder, they will copy to the smb share without a problem. I can then move them out of the folder in the SMB share, delete them, etc. I can also create an empty folder on the share. The only thing I can't seem to do is copy up a regular file. I get this same error message. I have read that it may be a bug in 10.6.3? But curious is other tyes of NAS devices have a similar behavior...

'Permission' to copy files from Time Machine
Hi again,
I'm trying to copy my thousands of documents from Time Machine to my new computer. However, I'm told I don't have 'permission' to copy or even open these files. I can 'preview' them in the Finder, but they come up as Locked.
Can anyone help? I was told I had to do it this way in order to avoid copying over the application bugs that laid waste to my computer (kernal panics) these past few months. Can I bulk update my permissions on these documents, or something?
Thanks in advance.
DeborahTurns out it's a problem with permissions on my NEW folders, not my old. Which is just great.

Previleges error while copying files to NAS
Hi.
I am a new MacBook user.
Yesterday I tried to use my D-Link NAS (Model: DNS-313) to store some files I had on my MacBook.
The NAS has been working without any problems in Windows XP for some time.
Yesterday was the first time I used it to store files from my MacBook.
I login in with read/write permissions but when I try to copy a 10MB file to a share ( smb://nas/Volume_1/Files ) I receive the following error: "The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges or some of the items."
I first created the folder named "Files" and it gave me no error message, so it's not a permissions issue. This happened with other files as well.
I then tried to connect to the Nas via ftp (using third party software,) and I was able to copy the file to the exact same folder and using the same credentials.
Am I doing something wrond?
Thank you in advance.Status update on this problem:
Yesterday I received my update CD to Snow Leopard. I installed it but I am still unable to copy files to my NAS. But now, the error message has changed to:
"The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in "<<the name of the folder being copied>>" can't be read or written (Error code -36)" -
Strange problem when copying files to NAS
Hello all. I have a strange problem when trying to copy files from my intel iMac to my Seagate NAS. I am copying files from my HD and when the file is nearly copyied i get an error message saying that the file can't be copied because it is already in use by another application. Well... it surely isn't. I try copying them by ftp (Filezilla) and everything works fine. I can then access them through my media server but !!!! NOT THROUGH MY iMac!!!! It is like the files are not there!!!! But they definetely are! I tried fixing the disk permissions, rebooting NAS, iMac etc but nothing seems to solve the problem. Is there any suggestion of what might be wrong? I am under Mavericks and i am pretty sure that the problem started after the update. When copying from my external USB hard drive to my iMac HD everything works fine. The problem is from my iMac to my NAS.

Error when copying files to NAS
Since upgrading to Mavericks, I frequently get errors in the Finder when copying files to my NAS.
This never happened under Mountain Lion. The error says "The operation can’t be completed because the item “filename” is in use."
Most of the time, it does copy over after several attempts. I'd like to know if there is a fix for this, or an update in the works.
I'm currently on 10.9.
Thanks!...Just FYI my problem occured even though I had updated to 10.9.2.
Through trial and error I eventually got my files copied. I detailed what I ended up doing in my post which I referred to above: ( https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5944278 )

Copying file in fileadapter with os command line
Hi XI - Species
I examined the following blogs:
/people/sameer.shadab/blog/2005/09/21/executing-unix-shell-script-using-operating-system-command-in-xi
/people/michal.krawczyk2/blog/2005/08/17/xi-operation-system-command--error-catching
We are on XI 7.0 SP 12 under AIX. Meanwhile there is a parameter for os command before message processing and after message processing.
We want to copy a file for separate processing by an other fileadapter, with the following command /usr/bin/cp %F /tmp/XI/ECHtoSAP/ELEC/MECOM/testcpbefor_mec
My experience is, that this command only works in the parameter before message processing in combination with the message protocol nfs.
Is there anybody who can answer the following questions:
1. Why does'nt the command work in after message processing with nfs? The monitor says command execution successfully, but the file is not copied.
2. Which file is expected to be copied after message processing? The original file (flat file) or the xml produced by the fileadapter?
3. What is meant by after message processing? After completion of the whole scenario or after the processing of the fileadapter?
4. Do these commands work with Ftp?
Thanks for a soon answer?

Check if the user who is executing the command has the requried permission to cpoy the file and the user who will be executing this command is be "<SID>adm"

The Original input file

I think this means after processing of the scenario to my best knowledge

not sure

Where to file a complaint with Apple support for issues?
I've been havintg ALOT of issues as of late with my Macbook Pro. Let me start at the beginnig:
I took my Macbook in to the Apple store around December of last year, I was having an issue with the screen. When it was pushed back a bit too far, it would fizzle and fuzz like a tv out of focus, push it back more and the screen would go out. Harmless, simple problem to fix. Right? okay so fast forward about a day, I started having wireless issues, I thought nothing of it, and took it in. They looked at it, ran a couple tests on it, said that it was fine and that they couldn' t reproduce the problem, and they also stated that there may in fact be something wrong with the internet in my home. I thought okay maybe. Seeing as my husband and I actually work for the cable company so its next to no problem getting the modem replaced. Well about three modems and a complete rewiring of our house later, and I am still having the intermittent problems. Even once allowing for them to wipe my hard drive and reset the computer. I got it home and was having the same issues, so I'd gone ahead and upgraded to Mountain Lion. Last weekend, I was on the phone yet again with an Apple rep, and they are telling me the same old thing, they keep telling me that it had to be a wireless issue on my part, I'd made a point to let them know that was not the case.
After I got off of the call, something weird happened, my mouse pointer on the screen began to move accross the screen and select things and programs began to open on their own. The screen flipped to the Hub, where the clock, calender, notepad and Movie Ticker are, and opened up the reset and dictionary in Safari while also zooming in on the window, forcing me to hard reset the computer pretty much every 20 minutes or so. When I do this, the Silverlight preferences bar, pops up on the top of a blank screen. I was even at the Apple store when it happened.
All of the people that I have spoken to, have basically treated me like an idiot, and its getting pretty old, I spent almost 4 hours on the phone last night, after my call was escalated, I was on the phone so long that my cell phone died, and then my husbands phone died. I'd had the call escalated ALL the way to a superviser in Customer Relations. After dealing with this issue for three months, I finally lost my patience with it and asked them to replace it, to which the supervisor replied "If it is a software issue, replacing the computer will not fix the problem" Really? Because if I have a different computer I can safely assume that this issue will no longer exist for me, and I can get on with my education.
I am a student recieving veterans benefits to go to school, I have missed ALOT of school because of this issue, what should I do about it? After having my computer for three days, they sent it out to the national repair center for about another week. I informed them that as a student, I don't have a lot of time to fight this thing, I'm already on academic probation because this issue has not been fixed, and I am facing termination from my program as well as having to reimburse the VA for the money they have paid the school. I'm about to start losing money, as well as my education and I don't know what to do at this point. I feel like I have exasperated all of my resources at this time. I cannot afford to replace the computer myself, and this is becoming a ver frustrating situation.
Is there ANYONE else I can speak to about this issue as time is of the essence and I can't wait any longer.
Thanks in advanced. As I read it you have several issues:
1. screen problem. What was done about it? Was it reproducible at an Apple store or AASP?
2. wireless issue. Please elaborate on that problem.
3. mouse pointer doing weird things. "The screen flipped to the Hub, where the clock, calender, notepad and Movie Ticker are," Please elaborate. I don't know the Hub, clock, calender, notepad and Movie Ticker. What are these?
4. what OS were you running prior to upgrading to Mountain Lion? Why upgrade with all these issues? -
Cannot copy files to, rename or unmount external HD
When I try to copy files to my 4TB Mac Os Extended(journaled) G-drive connected via Firewire 800 I get this message "The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)."
When I verify the disk itself(the orange disk with firewire symbol) in disk utility, it checks all the normal parts of the file structure and volume information this volume in disk utility then disk utility says "The volume GEE-THAT'S_BIG appears to be OK." I get the same report ""The volume GEE-THAT'S_BIG appears to be OK." when I verify the mounted volume in disk utility. When I try to repair either the disk itself or mounted volume I receive this "Error: Could not unmount disk".
When I try to eject the disk in Finder I receive this error message "The disk "GEE-THAT'S_BIG" wasn't ejected because one or more programs may be using it". This happens even when the only application I am running is Finder.
If I try to rename this disk I receive the "This name can't be used Try using a name with fewer characters, or with no puctuation marks" error message (even though the orginal name I gave this disk and the name it reverts back to has punctuation marks).
I believe I'm getting this problem because of corrupted permissions. Why are the Verify Disk Pemissions and Repair Disk Pemissions greyed out for this disk in disk utility? What can I do to resolve this issue?
thanks,
TimI simply switched the Firewire daisy chaining between my 1TB external and this 4TB external. Problem solved...

If an entity bean (CMP v2) has its transaction attrib "supports", why
when a client (ejb/servlet/jsp) calls its business methods does WLS
call ejbLoad() before every method call? Note that the calls do not
occur inside a transaction!
This is not intuitive to me. I would think that ejbLoad() would be
called once when the bean is activated and then all business methods would
access that data.
Note that if you put the entity bean behind a session bean with a
transaction attrib "Required", then the ejbLoad() gets called once no
matter how many business methods are called from the session bean.
This is (obivously) correct.
Why is this relevant? The latest java petstore demo essentially calls
EJBLocal's from jsp (via taglib's) - I guess no different from WLS
EJB to taglib product - where the fine grained getter methods are
called. From what I gather, this means that every one of the jsp
get methods results in a database read! This can't be right!
What am I missing? As above, if the entity bean has "supports"
and is called from a jsp, it appears that ejbLoad()/ejbStore()
would be called for every jsp taglib invocation.

Rob,
Thanks for your reply. This implies that even EJBLocals with fine
grained getter methods should never be used outside a tx scope.Yes, unless you are using Read-Only entity beans which cache data for longer
periods of time.
Even
though you bypass the RMI semantics, you'll be killed by the local tx.
Which to me says that using EJB's from JSP (even via tags) is a bad
idea because each getter method will result in a database read/write,
(unless you go with a readonly EJB as you stated).
Accessing transactional entity beans via tags is probably a bit off. You
could start the tx in the JSP or the tag library, but I don't really like
that pattern much. I prefer making the tags more coarse-grained and having
the tags talk to a stateless session bean which in turn talks to the entity
beans.

Unfortunately, I've been seeing some threads on the net advocating
using EJBLocals with tx=supports because one of the most common
patterns has session beans (where you can specify your desired tx)
in front of entity beans (so you're set methods are protected via
the session bean tx),RIght, I think Required or Mandatory is a better choice for the entity beans
here.
but then you can use the EJBLocal (via tags)
on a JSP page (no tx) to view the data via fine grained getter
methods.Other than the performance issues, I dislike this because it exposes the
entity bean directly to the JSP. If I have to go through an interface (the
session bean) to access the entity bean, then I shouldn't have another route
to access the entity bean directly.

As you state, this is a disaster because each getter method
will run in a local tx, requiring a database read/write. Oouch!

First off, I wouldn't recommend that you ever run any EJB with the
'supports' transaction attribute. If you want transactional behavior
use Required, RequiresNew, or Mandatory. If you want to run in an
unspecified tx, use NotSupported or Never.
WLS runs entity beans with an unspecified tx in their own local tx.
That's why you see the reads and writes on the method call boundary.
Your scheme of only reading when the bean is activated could make the
bean's data out of sync with the underlying database. That's acceptable
in many cases, and that's why we have the Read-Only entity bean option.
It gives you exactly what you'd like.

Permission Error when copy files into cmsdk using NFS with non admin user
Hi All,
We are using CMSDK with NFS protocol and we have created different users with ACL to control different access for users.
When we copy files into cmsdk folders using one of the admin user this works fine, even a multiple copy works fine. But when we use any non admin user , some time copy commands works but some time it throw a permission deny error. and this is happening very intermittently.
when we use ftp protocol and ftp file it's all works fine for the both admin & non admin user. Is there any limitation in using CMSDK NFS protocol
Did any one encouter any similar issue. Any pointers would be of great help.
Thanks in advance

I'm trying to finalize/share to Media Browser a 20 minute still slide show with music and text. I'd like to finalize it 1080 hd and have tried several times, but just before it's finished, a message box pops up saying it can't be done because "File already open with with write permission." What does this mean? All files are closed; this iMovie project is the only thing open. Does it mean one of the song files from iTunes? And should I just settle for saving it as a "large" file, which is what I'm trying right now?
Thanks,
JamieHi

I HAVE COMPLETED SEVERAL IMOVIES AND FINALIZED JUST FINE. NOW I GET THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE FROM MY LATEST PROJECT. "The project could not be prepared for publishing because an error occurred. (File already open with write permission)"! What is going on?
Hi
Error -49 opWrErr File already open with write permission
Trash the preference files while application is NOT Running.
Easiest way to find out if this is the problem is by:
• Create a new User-Account
• Log out of Your old one and into this
• Re-try iMovie
If it now works OK - then 99.9% the problem is iMovie pref. file that needs to be trashed.
