No permission to open my own files..

I am running OS X 10.7.5 and all of a sudden don't have permission to open any of my documents. I have tried Repair Disk Permissions but this hasn't fixed the problem, and I've tried Get Info and still seem to have read and write access to everything. Help??

  • Permission to open archived, .zip files

What Application or utility allows a "user" to open an archived .zip file that they have made themselves. I can open an archived .zip file as the administrator but my user that has limitations cannot open one that they have made so I want to give them the "permission" to open the archived file.
    Thank you, Linda

Since I upgraded to Mavericks X, I don't have "permission" to open my photo files in Time Machine.  Other documents seem to work fine, and I am the only "administrator".

Is the iPhoto library in your home folder, or have you moved it somewhere else?

  • InDesign CS5 (Mac OS 10.6) can not open its own file

I need guidance to open an artwork file that in one hour I have to send to the print shop. InDesign refuses to open its own file.
    Any clue? Adobe, please help.

Re: InDesign CS5 (Mac OS 10.6) can not open its own file
    Bob and Peter
Thank your for helping us out. It was really necessary to ask a coworker to open the file and export it in InDesign markup language.
Three hours later than expected, but it's done!
We are stuck here. I'm a Master Collection user of CS5, using only Dreamweaver, Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Bridge and Acrobat Pro. (I don't know why I bought the Master's). My coleague former Window user, got a Mac in May and downloaded the trial version of Design Studio Standard Collection of CS5.5. Before expiring, we purchased its license and filled it in the active trial version.
A couple of months ago we noticed that were missed Plug Ins on his version and contacted Adobe who instructed us to download the whole files again. We never did because it is a pain to get rid of the missing parts of a pre installed trial version etc.
I will ask Adobe to send a CD disk for his version.

  • How can I get permission to access my own files?

I recently got a new Mac Pro, and I used a Time Machine backup to migrate my data.  Then I discovered that Time Machine doesn't actually back up everything; it leaves out all the "Build" folders in all of my Xcode projects for some reason.  I transferred all those folders manually, but I couldn't help but wonder what else Time Machine was omitting.  So I decided that before I permanently retire my old computer (a seven year old iMac), I'd make a full backup of all its data onto BD-Roms.  This it turning out to be quite difficult.
First I tried using Target Disk Mode and running Disk Utility on a second computer to create a disk image.  But after about 15 hours, it wasn't even a third of the way done, so I cancelled that.  Then I tried connecting an external drive to my old computer and just dragging all the files onto it, which seemed to be working at first, but then after a couple hours, it said something like, "You don't have permission to access the Keychain App," and it stopped transferring.  So I tried again, but I omitted the Applications folder, since that's where the Keychain app is.  Then, after a couple more hours, it said something like, "You don't have permission to access some other file."
Is there any way I can disable this permissions business?  I tried going to "get info" and giving everyone read and write privileges, but it didn't make any difference.  I wouldn't even mind just skipping the files with permission issues, but the problem is that whenever it gets to an "unpermitted" file, it just completely bails out of the whole transfer and then I have to start all over again.  Is there at least a way to make it just skip those files and go on with the transfer?

Not in your case. System-level folders cannot be backed up by drag-copying; just drag your home folder to the external drive.

  • Klammer - no permission to open winmail.dat files

Up to now I have been able to open Winmail.dat files without a problem. Suddenly I get the response "Not permitted to open the file"; When I check the file in Finder I have the rights to read and wright. Here I am stuck. Would appreciate some advice.

Try enolsoft winmail viewer. It works well for me and supports Mavericks. You can find it from Mac App Store.

  • Why don't I have permission to transfer my own files from an external hard drive?

I have a brand new MacBook Pro with OS X Yosemete installed. This is my first Mac; before this I've always used PCs.
I have a music library of about 35,000 songs (around 165 gigs) which I have stored on an external drive. The drive is actually an old PC hard drive which I had encased when the motherboard of that computer died.
I bought a new (3T) MyBook for Mac to store my music on with the new computer. The old drive is almost full...and it's old...so I chose to just get a new drive and transfer the files, as opposed to re-formatting the old drive.
I connected both drives to my Mac and attempted to transfer the entire iTunes folder, hoping to "set it and forget it." About 15 minutes into the process, the transfer stopped and I received a "you don't have permission" error message. Through trial and error, I learned that this is only the case with some of the files.
Of course, I own these files...they're all mine. I tried changing the permissions but it just shows, "You can only read," and that is greyed out. I read something about clicking a padlock but I have yet to see one of those. I read all about reformatting the drive...but to do that I would first need to back up the files and delete them. However I cannot back up the files because I don't have "permission" to move them. If I could...I would not need to reformat the drive!
So the process has unfortunately been very slow and tedious...transferring a handful of artist files at-a-time, until I run into files which I can't move, and then isolating them. I'll eventually be done with this, but then of course there's still the problem of the songs which I own being completely unaccessible to me.
Does anyone have suggestions for me as to what can be done?  I appreicate it...I'm so new to Mac!

Drag one account's home folder to the other account's desktop, open the Users & Groups pane of System Preferences, and delete that account.

  • I don't have permission to open my own folders

My hard drive failed and I just got it replaced. Now I can't open my Desktop, Documents, Libraries, Movies and Pictures folders because I "don't have permission to see [their] contents". After using Migration Assistant to pull in my backed-up data I was asked to change my user name and I suspect this is at the root of the problem.

I did a permission repair booted from the Snow Leopard disk and that appears to have solved the problem – for which many thanks, Barney. However almost half of the items in my Dock have now been replaced by question marks and two have different icons which, upon clicking, become renamed as unknown files (for instance my iChat icon has turned into a Tiff document item. Holding the cursor over it displayed "iChat" but after clicking it linked to a .tif file which lies within Applications > iChat.app > Contents > Resources. With one exception, the remaining apps in the Dock are those which came with the OS. Presumably the answer is to copy the missing apps from Time Machine but how exactly do I go about that?

  • I had backed up my music files, and then my hard disk died and was replaced.  I replaced the files on the new drive, but get the Itunes message that I don't have proper authorization to open my own files.

"Need proper authorization" to have ITunes acknowledge my own music files which have been reintroduced on a new hard drive from a back up hard drive.

  • I cannot open my own file - whether my own or from another source.

Every time I go to open a file from the documents I edited in Photoshop Elements 10, this error message shows up:
What in the world is going on here? I also cannot open up PDF links -- another error message comes up. I originally started a similar discussion in the Photoshop Elements forum but was directed to the Acrobat forum because it seems this is more of an Acrobat issue. How can this be fixed? P.S. I did not try to attach this file in the image below to an e-mail or anything like that. I cannot open it in the documents files and can only open it in the Elements Organizer or Editor.

    Jenn,
    there is not just one Acrobat forum (you can see the list here;
http://forums.adobe.com/community/acrobat ) - this forum is about the
Acrobat SDK (software development kit), and is the wrong place to post a
question about how to use Acrobat or Reader. Take a look at the list and

  • Problem opening my own file

I have Adobe CS5, version 7. I have not had any problems creating files. I went to open one of my personal files and it is now telling me that I cannot open it as I need updated plugins.  Why would I need updated plugins if I was the originator of the file?  I s there someone I can speak to on this? Am I going to have to buy the new version of Adobe?

You don't HAVE to buy the new version. You can download the trial, use it to open the file and save as IDML. That should open in your CS5.

  • How do I view pc files migrated to iMac? The folders tell me I don't have permission to open them.

I used the Migration Assistant tool to copy files from my WindowsXP pc to my new iMac.   This took about 3 hours to complete.
I finally was able to locate the folders on the iMac, but they all have a red minus sign in the bottom right corner, and when I try to open them, I get a message saying I don't have permission to open the files - even though they are my own files.  Any ideas on how to access my migrated files on my Lion iMac?

  • Problems with opening jpg or tiff files in my own file groups

I have installed Aperture 3.1 from the apps store, but it does not open any of my jpg or tiff files. They are not stored in iPhoto or any other Apple feature, but in my own file system based on types and purpose. They are all scanned analog images made long ago; I do not use a digital camera

    Hello George,
    george e.todd wrote:
First there is no error message - but BTW I did not have Aperture beforhand; this is only the 3.1 downloaded from the App store. Could that be the reason?
It is a pity, that there is no error message, so we just have to guess.
The App-Store version should work just like the boxed version.
I'll check the info panel of any of my images, but as I've never set up anything like sharing or permissions, etc.,
You do not have to set up permissions to have problems with permissions. With each file in MacOS there are stored acces rights, and some times these are wrong, if the files are created by certain apps. Then you need to correct those.
But as Preview can open your pictures, then there seems to be no permission problem.
To me it seems likely that the images use a codec, that Aperture does not understand.
I would like to make sure that you can import  any pictures at all into Aperture.
Could you try to take a picture with "Photo Booth" and try to import it to Aperture?Photo Booth pictures should be imported without problems.
If you can import from Photo Booth, then your image codecs probably are the problem, and you need to find out what is special with your pictures, maybe you can post one as link for us to inspect.
if you cannot import any pictures, then probably something is wrong with your Aperture installation. In the latter case you might wish to perform the basic trouble shooting procedure

  • Safari doesn't open his own .URL files

    Hello
I've adopted Safari for Windows at work due to the good experience I had with Safai on my Mac at home, but I almost immediately I found a serious bug:
Safari for Windows creates ".URL" files perfectly like IE7, by dragging the icon on the left of the address into a folder (or the desktop). Everything' fine here. I use this functionality a lot!
I just opened the .URL file and looks nice. Here's an example:
    \[InternetShortcut\]
    URL=http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1188
The PROBLEM is that when I double click the ".URL" file Safari for Windows just created, Safari NEVER opens, instead opening IE7 !
There must be a registry fix for this, because if I drag the icon into an opened Safari, it opens the link perfectly.
Please tell me what I must change on the Windows Registry to fix this.
Thank you in advance for your support, and keep up the good work!

Replying to my own problem, I think I finally fixed it... by accident!
After a lot of juggling with Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs->Set predefined browser, I finally managed to get IE7 out of the way, but only after deactivating access to Internet Explorer, and a lot of random checks and reboots along the way.
I have no idea why Safari for Windows can't make himself the default browser on URL opening, but I believe you are missing some settings somewhere in the Windows Registry.
    Happy bug hunting!
