"no photo" on one machine, all there on another

I have iphoto 7.1.5 on two machines. My main machine suddenly launches an empty iphoto window that says"no photos" at the bottom. This is very scary since it should show 15,000+. But if I copy this now "empty" iphoto library to another machine also running 7.1.5, it launches and displays perfectly.
My daughter unplugged the main mac while it was doing a software update and that's when this all started. So I made sure the iphoto was up to date on the main machine but it still won't display any photos there. Thank God I have them backed up on an external HD but I can't get them to work on the main machine. What should i do?

try launching iPhoto while depressing the option (alt) key and repointing iPhoto to the iPhoto library - it may have created a new library that is empty and you may be looking at that
Note that double clicking on an iPhoto library does not launch that library - it launches iPhoto which uses the library it last opened - which may or may not be the one you double clicked on

    Hi All, I have two questions. First of all my CS3 is saying that it is installed on more than one machine, is there a way of seeing what machines my serial number is registered to? If i want to buy another CS3 serial number how do i go about it? I cannot afford to move to the creative cloud.....

    there's no way for you to identify which machines have or had cs3 activated, and you can no longer purchase a cs3 license from adobe.
    you can request an activation count reset (Contact Customer Care) and deactivate your cs3 on all your computers.  you can then install and activate on up to two computers.

  • Can't get LR3 to import photos from one external hard drive to another?

    I'm wanting to move thousands of raw photos from a folder in one external hard drive to another folder in a different external hard drive so all my photos are in one photo folder instead of two.  I've gone through the importing routine inside of lightroom to move the folder over to the new hard drive.  However, the photos don't move because they still show up on the old hard drive and not the new one.  What's weird is when I try to import it again, the grid view shows all the photos I'm wanting to import and when I move my cursor over any of the photos they are faded out and it says the photos are already imported.  However, if this is true why aren't they showing up in the new folder on my new external hard drive?  I know the new external hard drive works fine because I've successfully been putting all my newer photos there since I started using LR about one year ago.  The one's I'm trying to move over are older photos I shot try to using LR.
    I'm stumped and need some help.  Thanks in advance.

    You wrote
    "Are you saying while I'm in LR just grab the folder I want to move and drop it into the new hard drive"
    Yes, that's the way to move photos & folders from within LR.
    LR will then update its catalog with the new location and everything should be fine.
    Importing is not a good way for moving photos / folders. Since the photos are already in the catalog you had to uncheck <Don't import suspected duplicates> or all the photos will be greyed-out in the import dialog. If you did that LR would import the photos from drive A and put it on drive B. But they would still be on drive A, so you'd have the photos on both drives and would have to delete them on drive A.
    But more important: By default LR saves all edits in the catalog, they are not saved with the images themselves. That means by doing an import instead of a drag-and-drop move you'd lose your edits.
    You can save your edits to xmp, a side-car file that is stored together with the image file, and the xmps would be imported. But LR does not store everything as xmp. For instance Virtual Copies, Collections, Stacking are saved only in the catalog, so by doing an import you'd lose these things.
    Unless you know LR very well, it's best to use the Import Feature only for images that are NOT yet in LR.
    And another thing: Before doing major operations like moving big amounts of photos, it's best to backup your catalog first.

  • Cannot browse to actual photos in finder but all there when I launch iPhoto

    Trying to browse to photos to select for misc. uploads to other sites. When I browse in Finder => Pictures => iPhoto Library , I see the iPhoto Library icon, but when I click, it just launches the program versus displaying the folders with the pics in it as with the prev. version. I want to browse to the folder containing the pics so I can upload to websites, etc. I am running iPhoto v7.1.4

    AdeleMc
    With iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is now a Unix Style Package File. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
    Rooting through the folders of the old iPhoto Library Folder has never been the way to access the files. Any time you do it you risk damaging your library.
    There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
    For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
    To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
    This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
    If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto. With 10.5 you can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
    If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
    Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
    All of the above are a: faster and b: safer than rooting around in the old Library folder.

  • How do I transfer my photos from one external hard drive to another?

    I have a 500 GB eternal hard drive that I use as storage for all my photos. My iphoto uses this drive as the default library for my iphoto. I have run out of space on this drive. I have a new 1TB external drive that is mac OS formatted that I would like to move the photo library to. I tried to copy all the files on the 500GB drive and paste them to the new 1TB drive. Everything copied over but when I select the new 1TB drive as the default library, iphoto does not see any files on the new drive even though they are there. Did I copy the files incorrectly? Or does anyone have a suggestion on how to get iphoto to recognize the files on the new drive?

    See > iPhoto: How to move the Library folder to a new location
    If you moved your iPhoto Library correctly and then double-click the iPhoto Library icon in the new location, it should open iPhoto and remember the new location.

  • Setting up IPad on one machine for use on another

    Next week my wife and I celebrate our Ruby aniversary and I am surprising her with an IPad2 on to which I hope to put a video-card that my Daughter in Law has compiled and edited.  That last bit is relatively easy, the hard bit is getting the Ipad synched with my wife's three other apple devices without her knowing.  For the record she has a MacPro, a Macbookpro and an IPhone (3GS) all of which are in use at some time during the day.  The 'normal' way is to attach the Ipad to the user's machine and to set it up for them, but if I do that then I know that she will see a confirmation mail from Apple - she rarely leaves her machines outside of
    How do I do this so that she won't know until she opens the IPad box?
    I too have three Apple devices - Ipad2, Macbookpro and IPhone (4).
    So, for example, can I synch and upgrade the IOS on my macbookpro then change the identity just before I give it to her or is there some other way.  BTW we both have me.com accounts too - quite an orchard what!  I would like to get it set up and to test that the video runs ASAP, so your help and guidance would be cratefully received.

  • Create text on one machine and import to another

    I have a question re: workflow using more than 1 machine with FCP 5.0.
    Can I create text files on one FCP machine and then import to another?
    Can anyone please advise to what the workflow might be? For eample, where and what media files would need to move to have the text appear properly in the project on Machine #2.
    I hope this is clear. Thanks in advance for the advice.

    Since the grump is on a self imposed holiday ....
    While waiting for someone to tell you how to do this, you could simply do it.
    create a text file. Pay attention to FCPs scratch and default file locations, go there and look for a file that might be useful, copy it to your second computer in the same relative location and see if it works. If so, you have something to tell us. If not, try again.

  • "Links" on one machine "Favorites Bar" on another

    I have two Win8.1 x64 IE11 machines. (Not the same kind of machine, but the presently installed system software environments are very similar.) They are syncing my IE favorites via Microsoft Account. One calls the users\me\favorites folder where it stores
    Favorites Bar shortcuts "Favorites Bar". The other machine calls the exact same functional thing "Links". I've even tried deleting both folders with IE not running on either machine. Restart IE on one or the other, enable Favorite Bar toolbar
    and the disparately named folders come right back on both machines.
    Any idea why this would be and how I get them to agree what to call it? I'm suspecting some reg key somewhere.
    (I first notice this because I made the grave mistake of trying iCloud Sync. This *really* sent iCloud Sync into a ditch. What a hash that made of virtually everything it touched in IE, Outlook, Chrome, the stuff on my Mac, you name it. Turned that
    off and cleaned up the mess and am now leaving it off. The folks at Apple who wrote that obviously only ever had one PC and only ever ran one browser on it and didn't teach the Mac about their Google accounts or run Chrome.)
    <rant>It's stuff like this, and the frequent runaway scripts/crashed windows/"problem with web page"/problems rendering and interacting with way too many sites that have me just about to change my default browser to Chrome.
    It just works. IE used to. Not any more. It's become a satire of itself almost as though it finally had to live all the way down to the formerly unwarranted bad rap a lot of people have been giving it. And I've been loyal to IE since v. 1. Little wonder
    they are scrapping it and looking for new branding besides. Scary that this is easier than just fixing the code. What a furball that code must be at this point.</rant>

    When both the special folders are deleted on two machines syncing, one gets recreated called "C:\Users\myuser\Favorites\Links" and the other one on the other machine gets recreated called "C:\Users\myuser\Favorites\Favorites Bar" Both
    have the object name "C:\Users\myuser\Favorites\Links". Despite one of them showing up as ...\Favorites Bar. Why wouldn't they get created with the same file system name?
    In the test I *just* did, I renamed the "Links" version to "Favorites Bar". It promptly created a "Links" folder again. On the other machine, it now also has both an empty "...\Links" folder and a "...\Favorites
    Bar" folder with the synced shortcuts. But the IE on both now shows an empty Favorites Bar toolbar. Sigh.
    So what I tried, and what seemed to work, is turning Sync off for the One Drive|Other Settings|Web Browser on both machines, then deleting all the Favorites Bar and Links folders on both with no IE instances running. Start IE on both machines. Each creates
    a "...\Favorites Bar" folder, not hidden, not System, but Object Name "...\Links". Turn back on syncing and all appears to work and now they agree on the file system name.
    Conclusions/data points:
    1) If IE creates the Links special folder it names it "...\Favorites Bar" even though it's a Links special folder, if Sync creates the Links special folder it names it "...\Links".
    2) IE can use either file system name for the same purpose, presumably because under the covers they are both the Links special objects.
    3) Don't count on this folder being set System or hidden. Maybe it's supposed to be, but that's not how IE created them just now.
    4) While syncing, setting one to hidden and all its object to hidden not only results in an empty Favorites Bar, it results in the other machine having an empty Links special folder file system named ..\Links. I haven't tried setting one to System. Too much
    fun for one night.

  • Can a movie digital copy download on one machine be downloaded onto another with the same iTunes account at no cost?

    just went through my entire blu-ray library and more than half of them had a digital copy. Is it possible that since you need to sign in with your itunes account in order to redeem the code to download be considered a purchase? Being that iTunes in the cloud is available, i should be able to log in with the same account on my macbook pro and download the movie so that it is on my backup machine. In this case i have them all backed up to my iMac which streams to my apple tv.

    A computer can sync a dozen iPods and/or iPhones (just saying).
    However, You can't use more than one computer for that iPhone.

  • DVD-R plays on one machine but not on another

    I have an HDD-DVD recorder, which can burn DVD-R disks. The disks will then play in my 12" PB, but won't play in my iMac - although they did at one time. Putting the disk in results in a repetitive clicking and whirring but the disk does not appear on the Desktop of the iMac, and Disk Utility will not recognise it. Commercial DVDs are recognised OK.
    Both machines are running the same version of OS.
    Thanks!

    Not sure, maybe if you can share the form, I can have a look at it.

  • Help for transfering data from one user' all tables to another

    Hello guys,
    I have trim the extra sizes of columns in almost all tables of my database. Before doing this, I saved the data of tables by creating another user "User1" with the same objects and importing dmp file in it. After this I cleared my original objects and reduced the extra sizes of columns alomost in all tables.
    Now I want to transfer data from backup user "User1" into my original user's "User" tables.
    Can any one guid me with the way of doing so, so that I could do it just through 3 or 4 lines of code instead of individualy table wise transfering the data...??
    regards

  • HelloWorld Client on one machine calling EJB on another

    Hello,
    I got a very simple HelloWorld example working on my own machine using JBoss 3.0. The usual first example. I now want to be able to execute a client on my machine that connects to EJBs on a Linux machine that also runs JBoss 3.0.
    I have my two jar files HelloClient.jar with my client classes and interfaces. My HelloJAR.jar with my DD and jboss.xml etc.
    This is my client class with the ip of the linux machine that has my HelloJAR.jar file in the /server/default/deploy directory.
    Hashtable prop = new Hashtable();
              prop.put ("java.naming.factory.url.pkgs","org.jboss.naming:org.jnp.interfaces");
              prop.put ("java.naming.provider.url","jnp://172.16.220.160:1099");
              prop.put ("java.naming.factory.initial","org.jnp.interfaces.NamingContextFactory");
              try
                   Context ctx = new InitialContext(prop);
                   Object obj = ctx.lookup("java:comp/env/ejb/helloworld/HelloWorld");
                   HelloWorldHome home = (HelloWorldHome)javax.rmi.PortableRemoteObject.narrow(obj, HelloWorldHome.class);
                   HelloWorld helloWorld = home.create();
                   String str = helloWorld.sayHelloEJB("JOYCE is COOL");
                   System.out.println(str);
                   helloWorld.remove();
              catch(Exception e)
                   e.printStackTrace();
    I have placed all jars on the classpath on the linux machine. I have the HelloJAR.jar in the deploy directory on the linxu machine also. When I execute my client on my windows machine I get a NullPointerException on line 25 which is the line
                   HelloWorld helloWorld = home.create();
    Can someone put me ont he right track?
    Thanks

  • Photos missing but when searching all photos in finder they are there

    Not long ago i noticed that all my photos after july 20th were missing. The next thing that was there was an update i did just 2 days ago which was the end of august at the time. So almost 1 month was missing out of my iphotos photos. I didnt know what to do and 1 day my wife was searching for a photo that did not show up in iphoto but in the finder under all photos its there. The data file the original and the modified photo full size are all there. in the folder date they should be in.
    I have tried rebuilding the iphoto database and nothing changes. I can open these photos in preview just fine i can email them to people i just can not see them in iphoto.
    I deleted my entire ilife 08 and reinstalled it from the DVD. that did not change anything
    I dont want to lose these photos but i cant figure out why they do not show in iphoto yet they are in the iphoto folder where they should be.

    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
    Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • DMZs in one machine, debate

    Solaris Containers are ideal for server consolidation . I have thought about integrating DMZ services (www, mail, dns, db, catalog) into one physical machine. I'll provide a simple scenario.
    I have seen examples in various presentations about using zones in a "virtual" multi-tiered environment, where you separate these server roles into containers in one physical machine.
    Today, in a highly secured enterprise network archictecture, most of these services mostly run in different DMZs and are usually put into practice through use of switching and VLANs.
    So where am I going with this?
    Web-example:
    You have DMZ:s: WWW, APP, DB.
    - The WWW DMZ consist of multiple web servers/lets say they will be clustered zones.
    - The APP DMZ consist of 2 app.
    - The DB DMZ consist of several database servers.
    Now, this is only the production environment. There will be a similar setup for test and development.
    In total this gives a minimum of 18 zones in one machine, all need to have strict communcation rules through filtering.
    Here's the actual question:
    Would it make sense to separate these DMZs physically by adding 3 (3 dmz) physical NICs into that machine and physically connect these DMZ-NICS to a switch, configured to be on separate VLANs?
    Is it even possible to do this technically? Is it even sane to have these services running in the same physical machine? I bet some security folks would consider this insane. Can IP filter running in a global zone filter traffic between zones? If not, then my solution could work, sending the traffic out and back in through an external firewall.
    I wish to have a debate whether this is a good solution for DMZ consolidation of services.
    Thank you.

    OK, NAT seems to be the solution for now. I will look into that.
    I did a bit of research about this and found this paper:
    http://www.sun.com/datacenter/consolidation/solaris10_whitepaper.pdf
    This is an extract from chapter 8 (by the way, great paper):
    "Traffic between zones hits the loopback before it hits the higher layers of the IP stack where IPsec resides. IPsec can be used between zones if traffic is forced to go out onto the wire via the routing table. Firewalls such as IP Filter can not filter traffic between different zones, such as between the zone and the global zone because this traffic is looped back within IP. IP Filtering is the same as IPsec, in terms of hitting the loopback between zones. One way to implement IP Filtering between zones is to put the zones in separate subnets with routers between them so that traffic is forced outside of the system. This introduces a slight trade-off in performance for higher security between applications running in different zones. If using firewalls, install them in the global zone and then configure specific rules for the zone itself. Packets sent from the zone always have the zones IP address as the source address, so this property can be used to filter traffic from the zone."
    I might have misunderstood it, or the above is incorrect.
    Next step is try to build this with any solution possible. I will post any success.
