No photos access via the Finder!

This is in reference to using iPhoto on the iMac G5 and an iPhoto Library of about 17K images.
Where are my photos hiding? Why can't I find them in the Finder?
I can't find them using Adobe Bridge, either, to edit them in Photoshop and use them in newsletters laid out in InDesign. I also like to use Photoshop's web gallery features, but that is a little difficult when I can't locate my photos. The only way I can get my camera downloads to show up is by launching iPhoto; which, in no way integrates with my established workflow. I need to be able to get to my photos via the Finder.
Some pictures that were there before the upgrade now appear as blank, rounded corner squares with a dotted outline. Where might these images have disappeared to?
This is a disaster. How do I undo this incredible upgrade so I can get my photos back? *I don't appreciate having my options eliminated for me.*

Kathryn
Using Bridge to navigate an iPhoto Library increases the risk if corruption of the database exponentially.
You can set Photoshop as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically.
There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. Show File: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
To upload to MySpace or any site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves. If you're willing to risk database corruption, you can restore the older functionality simply by right clicking on the iPhoto Library and choosing 'Show Package Contents'. Then simply make an alias to the folders you require and put that alias on the desktop or where ever you want it. Be aware though, that this is a hack and not supported by Apple.

It is my understanding from these documents that if it is on and connected to the internet you can track it. In there it tells how tell if it is online by the color of the dot.
Read carefully, it is all in there
I still think this person is bluffing, but what confuses me is how this person knew how to contact you (?) You must not have had any security on it at all when lost.
    Likely nothing (see #3)
If it were mine, I would erase it to make an expensive paperweight out of it and call it lessons learned - that is if at this point you still can, punch the button!
I can only go by what the Apple documents have told us, as your situation seems totally unique to any I have heard.

You're saying that when you click on the  iCloud preference pane button it sends you to the defunct MMe
    rather than giving you this?
Is your profile up to date, i.e. are your running 10.7.5?  Make sure you click on the iCloud button and not the MMe button.

  • Can i get access to the find command in Word via activeX?

Does anyone know if it is possible to search through a word document using activeX commands from labview? Basically i need to use the "find" command from Word.
    Thanks for your help

    Excellent thanks a lot.
I've now got the search function working but im having a little trouble getting the results i want. What do you mean by "new selection"? is this the output refnum from the execute node?
Im looking to search through a word document for a certain paragraph number then highlight this paragraph in some way.
At present i have used your method to find the section number and then used a frame property on the output refnum followed by select method cascaded from this. This has the effect of selecting the number causing the word window to jump to the desired point but only the first line of the paragraph is shown because it places the found text at the bottom of the screen.
Do you have any suggestions as to how i could select the en
tire paragraph? I also cannot get any output from the select method in this way, am i using it incorrectly?
    Thanks again for your time

  • How do I find a photo file in the Finder + future migration question

Being a recent Mac convert, I am just getting used to the 'complete control' approach to photo management that iPhoto has. I'm used to knowing where my photos physically reside on my computer - this is useful for doing things like uploading photos to a website for example. How do I actually find a particular photo in the Finder (or even give photo files recognisable names, as opposed to whatever automated naming system iPhoto uses)?
A followup question to this is, what happens if I ever want to migrate my photos out of iPhoto one day to another application or even back to a PC (God forbid - just my paranoia about being forced to use a particular system forever kicking in here!) - is there a way to do this, and keep photo modifications etc? Or once I start using iPhoto, have I made my decision for life??
My apologies if this has been asked before, I couldn't find anything in the forum when searching.

I hope you've a notebook and pen, but you've asked a lot of questions:
I'm used to knowing where my photos physically reside on my computer
You photos are stored in the iPhoto Library at your Pictures Folder. This is a Unix style Package Folder that very easy to see inside: right click on it and choose show package contents. A finder window opens with the library exposed.
Here's how the library is laid out:
In this folder there are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
iPhoto always preserves the original file, all operations are carried out on a copy.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
And here's a warning: It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss.
this is useful for doing things like uploading photos to a website for example
No it's not. Don't surf the iPhoto Library. The idea with iPhoto is that you do everything via the iPhoto Window or media browsers:
So, to access pics use one (or more) of the following:
There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser. Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
iPhot doesn't name the files, those names are given by your camera. You can add titles in iPhoto and if you use the File -> Export command there's a facility there to name the resulting file (it'll be a copy - remember what I said about all operation being done on a copy...) with the title.
Do not rename files in iPhoto, That comes under the heading of making changes in the iPhoto Library Folder and alters the path to the files. If you do, iPhoto will lose track of the file. But the truth is there's simply no need to. However, you can rename the files before importing them if you like.
Migrating is really easy. You've seen the layout of the Library above. The originals are all there, in the originals folder, the Modified versions in their folder. If you want to have only the most recent versions of pics, then export them from iPhoto to a folder on the desktop.
By all means post back if you need more.

  • My iPHOTO is empty but the photos appear in the Finder "all images" folder

Yesterday my iPhoto '08 was fine, then today, when it came out of sleep mode, there was a Finder window showing two folders: one named 445555 and the other named iPhoto Library. I clicked on the 445555 and the iPhoto opened empty, with no photos, like new. I closed it and tried to reopen from the Dock but it was still empty. Also tried to open from the iPhoto Library folder with the same result. After some despair i found the photos in the "all images" folder in the Finder main window, so i suppose they are OK and in my computer.
How can i restore my iPhoto or at least make a back up of the most recent photos that i don't still have a back up?
    Thanks for the help.

    Jeff
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and point it at the iPhoto Library Folder - which is in your Pictures Folder. If iPhoto sees a valid library there it will open it.
If, however, it does not see a valid library there then your database file is corrupted:
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • I'm trying to share photo's via the web.  Best practices / ways to do this?

I've used Picasa in the past to share photo's via web link with family.  I'm not certain how to do that using iPhoto if avaialble.  Does anyone have any thoughts on that?

iPhoto does not support Picasa, however, you can share images from your iPhoto library with Facebook, Flickr, and Twitter.
With iPhoto open, from the iPhoto menu bar top of your screen, click Share then select one of the three options.

You cannot browse these hidden system directories using Finder.
You need to use the Terminal.
There are free firewall add-ons for Leopard that give you a better control over the firewall. There are also stand-alone firewall replacements. You can google for them, but be careful when you modify the OS. Be sure it is fully backed up, preferably with a bootable clone, just in case.

Does it still turn on to the Apple logo?
If it does, turn it on and hold it up to your ear. If it's making a clicking sound, try hitting it easy a few times on the side. The idea is the hdd is "stuck" and hitting it loosens it. Just don't do it too hard to break it.

I can connect to my NFS shares via an Apple-K and typing nfs://host/export/home, but my NFS server is showing up in the Leopard finder as a Windows machine and when I click on the host, I get a "Cannot connect to server"
I don't mind so much having to Apple-K to mount nfs shares, nor do I object to Apple's truth in advertising blue screen of death icon for Windont machines, but I do object to having my Ultra 80 represented by the BSoD Windows icon.
Can you change the icon for hosts on the net? Is there an .plist I can tweak to show Sun machines with a Sun logo?

    under
    "/System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources/"
    you'll find a file called
    "public.generic-pc.icns".
this is the bsod-windows-icon. at first glance i can't spot something about sun*, but maybe it helps you on your way to your own network-icon.
