No picture on DVD

Hi. When I play DVD's on my T61, I can watch the previews but when the actual movie starts, the screen goes dark except for a small green square in the upper left corner. Sound is fine so I can hear that the feature is playing. This same problem happens in all three of the media players I have tried so it must be my laptop and not the media player. Can anyone help to problem solve? Thanks, barbara

The exact same problem that Barbara is having just started happening on MY T61.  Exactly.  I have played DVDs on it before just fine.  Any ideas as to what this could be?

  • Pixelated pictures when dvd is played after burning in IDVD

I have created a slideshow in iDVD - all went well. I have burned to a dvd however, when the dvd is played on our dvd player/tv the pictures are terribly pixelated. (they look fine on the preview during the project) - rather frustrating when the thing takes HOURS to burn as there are 1000+ images. Any advice to be offered as to why this is happening and how to prevent it? Many thanks.

    Hi Lyn Olds
Welcome to apple discussions. If you haven't already, take a look at apple's tutorial for iDvd. They really do help.
    iDVD Tutorial:
    http://www.apple.com/ilife/tutorials/#idvd
iDVD 8 Manual, as pdf, so download it. It is very helpful:
    http://support.apple.com/manuals/#idvd
Keep in mind the protocol for burning a dvd is rather specific and reduces the resolution of most images to 640 x 480. That's less than a third of a megapixel for still images. Most burned Dvd's are lagging well behind the capabilities of current hi-resolution cameras and camcorders.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/7.0/en/6675.html
You may also want to take a look at these 3 apps that specialize in quality slideshows. They come highly recommended on this forum (especially the first one).
    http://www.boinx.com/fotomagico/overview/
    http://boinx.com/photopresenter/overview/
    http://www.lqgraphics.com/software/phototomovie.php
If the above apps don't meet your needs then search this forum for other solutions like using Ken Burns effect to minimize pixelation via a QT movie.
I believe OT does a great job of explaining this per the following link:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8164545&#8164545
Btw, the only way I am aware of to burn High Resolution DVD’s is with Roxio’s Toast and a Blue Ray burner.
Another solution is to simply hook your TV to the Mac for playback. That or consider using AppleTV which essentially circumvents the need to burn a dvd altogether.

  • Burn pictures to dvd

Trying to Burn Pictures to a DVD.  Exported selected photos from Aperture to my Desktop.  Inserted blank DVD-RW into disk drive which prompted me to open Disk Utility which I did.  When asked to select images to burn from disk utility, I selected the correct folder from my desktop, but the images are all gray scaled out so I cannot select them.
    Any suggestions

Click on the desktop so Finder is active. Click File in the menu bar and select New Burn Folder from the drop down list. This creates a folder on the desktop. You can change its name if you wish. Drag and drop the photos to the Burn Folder. Go back to the File menu and select Burn (the name you gave it) to Disc...
Follow the directions on the screen.
The photos are not actually moved to the Burn Folder, they are aliases. So at the end of the burn you just trash the Burn Folder.

  • Can't burn pictures to dvd

I keep getting error messages when I attempt to burn pictures to a DVD-R.   I have seen communications errors and also "laser not aligned"

I would suggest testing with a different brand of DVDs as some of them are not very good.
If that doesn't do it, you are probably looking at hardware service. Contact Apple using www.apple.com/support/contact if you are in a country that supports it or call the appropriate phone number on this page. Alternatively carry the iMac in to an Apple retail store or service provider to ask for an estimate.

  • No picture in DVD Player

    Hi!
I wanted to ask whether any of you knows this issue or has a solution to it:
When I watch a DVD in Leopards DVD Player in Fullscreen and switch to window view it increasingly often happens that there is no video anymore. Audio works fine but you wont see anything at all. Even if you get back to the Menu, you only see the image of your "cursor".
Relauching the app does not solve the issue, only restarting Leopard fixes it.
I'm watching DVDs with region code 2 (Europe) if that's helpful.
    Thanks in advance.

    hi
i also have the problem with my Macbook Pro (bought in january) that i dont have a picture when playing DVDs, i only see the menu markers on a black screen and hear the sound. But this is not always the case. It may be that one day a DVD plays fine, and the next day it is not working, or the other way around. I have also been updating the system with the "software update" function, but the this didnt help. I use leopard in version 10.5.1.
    Can someone help, please?
    best regards,

  • How to view pictures from DVD as a slideshow

I hAve no idea how to view pictures on my Mac importing takes forever I just want to look at them as a slide show they are professional pictures how do I do this

If the DVD contains a collection of image files that you can access with Finder, then just create a selection of those that you want to see and press Option-SpaceBar. That should create a full-screen slideshow.

  • Pixelized picture in DVD player

my DVD player shows the picture, but it has fairly large and random pixelations when i try to watch.  What is wrong with it? if you need i can email you a screen shot of it.

My guesses are either a dirty/defective DVD, or a dirty/defective optical drive mechanism. If all DVDs do it, then most likely the mechanism. The usual advice is to try a lens cleaner, or something like partially inserting a credit card with a thin cloth over it to try to attract any lint. Failing that, it may require a new optical drive.

  • Jerky pictures in DVD through Premiere Elements 1

Hi. I export my project to a DVD and get a jerky picture when I watch it on TV when there's a movement. I tried to change the field options but so far without luck. I thought I might ask for the right solution as it's quite annoying to waste about 12 hours and some empty DVD's just to see that it's still wrong.
I would expect that the option "always Deinterlace" should do the trick as one field disappears from each frame but it didn't really help.
Is it possible I still had the problem because the option "frame blend speed changes" was checked? I don't use any time stretch in my film.
Would love to know if anyone has a good idea before I waste some more effort and make experiments.
I actually succeeded with that problem as I made one film 3 years ago. Unfortunetly I wasn't smart enough to write down what I did, and now I don't remember...
By the way I use PAL as I live in Europe.

OK, you are outputting to a DVD-Video, and your source footage is DV-AVI, Captured from your miniDV tape camera. That is as good as it gets. The problem should not be in your source material. Is your new camera also miniDV tape, or is it something else?
Given the above, your Project Preset should be DV NTSC (since is saw the 29.97 fps later on). This will mean that your source footage matches 100%.
Now, let's do a bit of background on what goes into getting our movies onto a DVD-Video. For a discussion on quality, the one thing to consider is that the footage (DV-AVI in this case) will be Transcoded into MPEG-2. This reduces the file size, and because it is the chosen format/CODEC of the DVD-specs., will allow a player (either hardware, or software) to play the resulting DVD-Video. MPEG-2 is pretty good, but does have trouble with motion, whether it is camera motion, or subject motion. It will be increased if the motion is across the axis of the lens of the camera. Still, the DVD-specs were written when almost all TV's were CRT and Standard Definition (SD). MPEG-2 was as good as it got. Along came High Definition (HD), and TV's got higher resolution. Suddenly DVD-Video did not look so good any more. Blu-Ray (BD = Blu-Ray Disc) was introduced. The MPEG-2 CODEC was updated to HD and a new one, H.264, was introduced. Up-rezing players did improve even the old DVD-Videos, when shown on the HD TV's, but they do that by special chips, that do nothing else.
Because DVD-Video was designed for CRT TV's (Interlaced display), that is still part of their specs. When one now plays a DVD-Video on an HD (Progressive) TV, without an up-rezing deck, problems do show up. Same thing if we play a DVD-Video on our high-rez computer monitor (Progressive).
Tell us about the equipment that you are now playing your DVD-Videos on. Is it the same exact equipment that you used for those older DVD-Videos, or have you upgraded?
Also, it might be worthwhile talking about De-Interlacing. What happens in most operations is that one-half of the vertical resolution is just thrown out. That takes our 480 and leaves 240 - not what we want to do. Now, there are some methods that use sampling algorithms, that help maintain that vertical resolution, but will De-Interlace to yield Progressive material. Those up-rezing HD DVD players do that with circuitry. Some encoders do it but at a price - $. Adobe products do not use any fancy chips, nor do they use encoders, that cost 10x the price of the programs. However, one can find De-Interlacing applications that do a better job than what Adobe offers. Some are even free, but you have to look carefully and search a bit for them. Next, some are not quite so easy to use, some even requiring that the user learn to write in scripting language to run them. Still, there are some good ones out there, and all will be stand-alone programs, not simple plug-ins for PrE, or any other NLE (Non Linear Editor) program.
Now, if you are going to De-Interlace, do expect the vertical resolution to go down.
Good luck, and let us know about the equipment that you are using to view your DVD-Video.

  • Backing up pictures on dvd-rw

I have a blank dvd-rw and i want to back up my pictures. I have about 1000 pictures. How do i back up the pictures? Do I need to download a backup program? thanks

Daniel, there are several different softwares available to burn with, out there on the market.
The top of the line as far as Mac is concerned is Roxio's Toast 7 and Popcorn both of these softwares allow for compression of Commercial DVD Movies of larger size to fit on a standard 4.7gb disc.
There is a lot more to it than that but it is do-able.
For most users they just want to copy Music, and Pictures and the like. You can do that by first clicking and opening Mac HD and then click on Applications, and when it opens scroll down to Utilities and click on it and when it opens find Disk Utility and open it and click on Burn and choose the file, and burn your pictures....
Most of the Burning Software that is available will cost upwards of $70.00
The disk utility software is free with your computer..
If you have the iLife software with iTunes it also is free and allows you to burn CD's and MP3's... Hope this helps....Don

  • Pictures on DVD-ROM

Here’s a quick question that I can't seem to find an answer to.
When you have a slide show and select to display contents as part of the DVD-ROM, does this increase the amount of space used on the DVD?
I ask, because I have quite a few slide shows in a project, and I am finding that the quality of the movies is very bad and I think it's because of the slide shows taking up too much space causing iDVD to change the compression on the video. (Over 1000 digital pictures spread out over several slide shows!).
    Thanks!

It does increase the amount of DVD "usage." Once you get over "60 minutes" (half of capacity), iDVD kicks into Variable Bit Rate (VBR) encoding, which is a two-pass process. Might be better image quality.
Image quality is an on-going subjective evaluation process here. These projects are made to be viewed on TVs. My slideshows look best on TV and the worst is on my PowerBook. So, if you have an LCD TV, that may be the real issue...

  • Stops after 99th picture on DVD player

I am trying to burn a slideshow and it will play fine on my computer, but everytime I put it in a DVD player, the show stops after the 99th picture. I don't think it has anything to do with the audio, because it is right in the middle of a song. What can I do?

Not all consumer DVD Players do well with slideshows that exceed 99 photos. Here's why:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302961
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302962
iDVD6 treats a photo as a chapter and the DVD standard only allows up to 99 chapters....hence only 99 photos in many set top DVD Players. With iDVD6 you can use more than 99 photos but there is no guarantee that they will play as expected in all DVD players as many set top DVD players will choke trying to go past 99 chapters.
Hope this helps but if not come on back.

  • Video + Picture slideshow DVD & Subtitle issues

    Hello All,
I am making this family video and slideshow DVD to distribute among the family members. I know how to make video DVD out of shot footage but I am struggling hard to make such hybrid DVD where I can put video footage as well picture slideshow.
I checked out slideshow function in iDVD but it only allows pictures in one folder and I have multiple folders of pictures and I would like to be able to switch between these folders when I watch this slideshow on DVD player.
I tried to make iPhoto albums but there I couldn't make subfolders so I got stuck there and can't try importing from iPhoto5.
Anybody has idea how I can do this?
Also, I would like to add subtitles to movie as well as pictures. Any comment on subtitles is also welcome.
    Many thanks in advance.

    Hi n
    Deep water !
I understand Your questions but can't figure out a way to do exactly as You
want it to be done. I would instead make my SlidShows as movies in iMovie
and combine them into one iDVD disk. This is fairly simle and the quality is
much a personal issue. It's OK for me.
When I've done my movies (as individual iMovie projects) I drop the project
icons into an open iDVD theme (just inside the edge of the theme window).
Then rename them in the theme window and adjust the titles location so that
it looks nice. If You want You can also add a folder for Your photos (to be
used by Your family in their computers).

  • Can't Burn a copy of pictures to DVD

I have a 1.5 Ghz Powerbook G4 17inch and I am having trouble burning a backup of my photos to DVD. I have done this in the past with no troubles, but this time when I go to burn a DVD I get the following message.
The burn to the MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-825 drive failed. The device failed to respond properly, unable to recover or retry.
Anyone have a similar problem? Any ideas on how to make a backup? Thanks for your help.
Feel free to email me [email protected]

I am having the same issue with iPhoto in my Mac Pro. At first I thought it was just my external DVD burner malfunctioning when attempting to backup my iPhoto library onto dual-layer discs. But single-layer discs won't work, neither in the external nor the internal burner. DVD movies from Video TS folders I authored will burn fine using Toast, but I have ruined a bunch of blanks attempting to use iPhoto. Aargh!
