No POST or BIOS on HP Media Centre PC m8226x. HELP!!

I left my desktop on over night, and when I woke up, it wouldn't boot! What happens is once I press the Power Button, it stays on for between 4-6 seconds, before it turns off. Nothing appears on the screen and I'm assuming it isn't even loading the BIOS because of how fast it all happens.

The m8226x seems to have a motherboard issue - specifically speaking with the capacitors going bad - generally 9 that are basically a dark brown color, barrel shaped, which you will notice that all the other capacitors are flat across the top of the cylinder, while these end up being pushed out or rounded on the flat aluminum surface (some might even have a little dark liquid coming out).  This seems to be a common issue with many of the motherboards when the division that assembles them either uses sub-spec capacitors that end up over heating and ballooning on top a little or a poor design that is set too close to the capacitor limits or slightly above.  There is another cause which is something else gave way and allows the capacitor specs to be overrun, which means something else is wrong.  The capacitors would run you about a buck a piece from a electronic supply store (not like radio shack or Best Buy, but a really supply store that sells all kinds of electrical components like capacitors, resistors, circuit boards, chips, etc.)  So you can try to repair it yourself buy replacing the capacitors that look bad and hope that you got them all (in mine it was 9).  This worked for me but I went ahead and bought another motherboard and will replace the repaired one since I feel that there is a reason that the capacitors were going bad due to a possible design error.  A newer or referbished board I would hope has the issues resolved in it.
Buying knock off capacitors seems to have been a problem with a lot of electronics since 2006 to around 2010.  They save just over a  penny for each knock off but you figure a penny each capacitor means a dime a motherboard times how many millions of motherboards, means a bit of money.  Same issue with capacitors when it comes to flat panel TV's (LCD, Plasma, and LED styles).
So check your capacitors and if you see they are not flat I would say replace the motherboard unless you want to try soldering in replacement capacitors - make sure you get the same ones, but you could step up on voltage a little.  They will be 105 degrees C so make sure on that too.  Good luck.

  • Front Row - Mac Mini - and PowerBook G4, Mac-Mini Multi Media centre.

I will be purchasing a HDTV is the near future and would like to buy a Mac Mini to complement it. ( then sell my DVD player )
    The big question are:
-Can I ( using Front Row ) stream AVI data (film) from my PB G4 to my Mac-Mini and watch the content on my new HDTV. ( over AirPort )
-Do I need to buy a new PB that also has Front Row ? ( I hope not )
-What type of video data can I stream ? (iTunes and iPhoto I already know about)
-What about HD DVD's when they come out. Is the drive in the Mac-Mini HD DVD compatible ?( I don't think so )
Please - If you have any other relevant points or question's about the Mac-Mini usage as a multi media centre, Post them here.
    15" PB G4 SD 1.5 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

I just tried a AVI film and it work's with QT,
although a mpg film did not.
Now that I think about it, I tried a mpg plug-in for
    QT and was disappointed.
Has anyone had any success with such a plug-in ?
    Another Question:
Must then this AVI data reside in iTunes for
Front-Row to "see" it ? How does this work ?
I guess that when a Blue-Ray drive is added to Apple
products that a HD DVD will not play, or will it play
it but only burn Blue-Ray ?
When shopping for a HDTV I asked about the difference
in Blue-Ray and HD and he told me that the TV will
    play both versions.
I hope that the drive will also play both, although
the way I know Apple it will be Blue-Ray only. (
    at-least in the beginning ) Remember DVD-R
i would not worry about the blu-ray - HD-DVD thing right now. too much still in the air. once they realize consumers are too un-techie to figure it out and just continue to buy DVD's their will be a standard plus their is already other formats being developed. then if you talking about movies and such my guess is downloaded content is the way apple will go with an itunes movie store but thats my guess.
but yes, HDTV's will play either, its the player. I have a 61" samsung 720p DLP and my new mac mini looks good on it at 1280x720. front row is great. I also watched a ton of HD trailers from quicktime's website and they were amazing.
and from what i have seen from front row it only shows content that is in itunes or iphoto not random folders but i could be wrong, still palying around with it.

The PC version is now called OMP [Open Media Portal] Its meant for any current windows platform, [double check the specs] but many have been testing it with XP Pro/Home with good success. Remember, very early beta!!!!

  • MAC OS X V10.7 Lion Killed My Media Centre....

Upgraded my Mac Mini I use as a media centre to Mac OS X 10.7 Lion and no Front Row??? What the ?????! What's the point of having a Mac Mini to use as a media centre with no more Front Row??? I don't know what Apple were thinking, or weren't thinking.... I don't even know why I bothered upgrading to Lion.
I purchase movies through iTunes to watch using Front Row... no front row, no more movie purchases. I may as well just go to sanity and buy it on DVD, and use my DVD player. I was really looking forward to the Lion upgrade too............ back to Snow Leopard...

I use Diamond BVU195 USB-to-DisplayLink adaptors. Just updated mid-2009 13" mbp (a model that appears on the list in Peter Duke's post) to MLion 10.8.2 from SL.  Big mistake. Never a problem with SL, but Mountain Lion has been quite underwhelming.
Regarding the BVU195, there is flickering/pulsating when I open Safari Top Sites or open some sites such as Hotpads.com.  In Hotpads, everything seems fine until I move the mouse over a "house", an action that causes the map portion of the window to go nuts.
I have WASTED SEVERAL HOURS trying to get this fixed, trying 3 different DL drivers (1.8 seems to work the best), all the while having flashbacks of past Microsoft Windows' woes.  I have had my laptop lock up (requiring on/off button shutdown) more often in the past 3 days than the previous 3 years. And to think that this problem has been ongoing for over a year - unconscionable! on the part of Apple.  Why Apple and not DL?  I can open the same sites with no problem when using Firefox (my new default browser.)
Speaking of flashbacks, I can remember a time 20 or so years ago when I bought my first Compaq computer and was in heaven. I had a similar estatic feeling when I moved over to Apple 3 years ago.  The burden of endless angst had been lifted, or so I thought.  Sure, when I bought the Compaq, I spent twice as much for the "same" specs (sound familiar?) and had limited aftermarket upgrade options due to its proprietary build (sound familiar?) but it worked almost flawlessly (familiar?) and offered phenominal support, second to none (familiar?).  I never regretted paying out the extra money - the experience was well worth it.  But now Compaq, once a leader in quality and innovation, is now all but a forgotten joke.  I truly hope Apple isn't headed down the same path of putting out garbage and then ignoring the problems that follow.  A year and still not addressed - unconscionable!

  • Windows Media Centre - Windows Media Foundation - Windows Apps. Replacement for WMC

Still looking for a PVR replacement but DVBLogic looks like it might do the job.
Have gone down the Plex Windows App route (The clostest replacement to WMC player so far) but they are saying they are hamstrung by limitations of the App sandbox? and Windows Media Foundation.
I need some concrete information from the Windows Media Centre People or Windows Media Foundation people so that developers can be steered in the right direction to help people like me switch over from WMC to something else without major headaches, frustrations,
days and days of conversion and metadata reentry.
    My post from Microsoft Community
    Hi,
Since Windows Media Centre almost didn't make it into Windows 8 I have been looking to move to something else before it disappears for good.
While it might just make it into Windows 10 there certainly won't be any future development.
I not a big fan of Microsoft products but WMC is one application they nailed
    Some additional smart recording options
i.e. I had to add "The Big Bang Theory - Return", "The Big Bang Theory - New", "The Big Bang Theory - Finale" etc to my series recording
A proper library manager (Plex does a great job of this) e.g. by series, season, episode - Movies - Documentaries etc with additional data downloaded.
    A few more playable formats/containers
    It would be perfect.
A proper Library wasn't as important as most of the metadata could be viewed directly in windows explorer.
    Not supported with other containers.
This brings me to the first obstacle.
All the alternatives I have looked at so far can't or won't support .wtv files
Converting the files to another format/container loses all the explorer properties. (And some of the metadata completely)
Discussions I have had so far are pointing the finger at the "Windows Media Foundation"
I.e. Developers can't do anything with .wtv files because WMF doesn't support them.
So the question is: If Windows Media Centre is no longer viable for Microsoft why haven't they atleast provided the tools for developers to support the format/container they forced upon so many users of their product.
    i.e. Metadata reader/writer
    Codec/Container? player?
I need a replacement for Windows Media Centre: What is/are the alternative(s)?

  • "learn remote" from apple TV - mac mini as media centre

I have bought a mini to use as a media centre. Both front row, and Plex, can be driven very well from my six button "apple remote". However I would really like to drive front row and Plex from the single remote that came with my Loewe TV, blue-ray player, and sound system.
Appletv can do this - there is a "learn remote" utility that allows you to configure IR commands from your TV remote to behave like the 6 (7) buttons on the apple remote. Since AppleTV is like a cut down Mac, I expected to be able to do the same on the Mini. But I cannot find the utility anywhere.
Anybody know if this appletv application is available on the mini? or if the same effect can be achieved another way. I dont want to buy a universal remote, since the single Loewe remote already drives everything else. Nor do I want to pay extra for the programable remote that Loewe sell. The "learn remote" utility would be absolutely perfect.

I know its been 17 months since anyone replied to your post, but I stumbled upon your request, because I had the same issue. However, I can faithfully say that I solved this same problem, because I inadvertendly programmed my MX-980 remote to control my Apple TV and Mac Mini at the same time and didn't realize until much later what was happening. I use my Mac Mini (for the purpose of using PLEX) and my Apple TV for other purposes. Here's a discussion I had over at remotecontrol.com about it.
The solution for you is have two Apple remotes. You can buy an extra apple remote at a good price over at Amazon.
Out of box, the apple remote is designed to pair with your Mac and Apple TV as long as pairing is enabled on those machines by default. However, it's the consumer's responsibility to physically pair that remote with the machine you want to control so it can't control any other machine. That's the trick you were missing...
So, if you have an Apple TV and Mac Mini next to each other -- a single Apple Remote will control BOTH machines at the same time out of box. This is not the intended result as you have indicated. Therefore you need two apple remotes.
Mac Mini: Once you have two apple remotes, go to your Mac Mini (OSX 10.9) and select under the Apple menu > Preferences > Security > General > Click unlock (bottom left corner) first > sign in > Then click Advanced... to see the Pairing process. If you click advanced *before* you click unlock icon, the pairing menu will be missing.
Note: You can also install free CandleAir preference for your Mac which is a slick interface for configuring apple remotes faster and easier IMHO. http://www.iospirit.com/labs/candelair/
Apple TV: Now take your second Apple Remote, go to Apple TV > Preferences > General > Remote and follow the on screen instructions to properly pair your remote control.
    This should solve your problem.

Ive just had an upgrade to windows 7 and have reinstalled my creative zen. The installation was no problem but now when i click on the desktop icon then click browse media it opens windows media player instead of the creative media centre. The whole interface has changed and i cant find how to add media at all now, with the old creative centre it was simple you just clicked add media. Not being well up on this stuff i was wondering why i cant accsess the media centre i had with xp, any advice would be most welcome. Thanks very much.

I already tried accessing Contact Us but it wanted the date I bought my player, etc., and I've had it for years and don't feel like spending time looking for the receipt, etc. I just want to add some new CDs to my music library and then my X-Fi. Thanks.

  • G5 as a media centre?

I"m getting a used dual 2.0ghz G5 tomorrow and am planning to use it as my media centre. I'm using my Samsung LCD 26" tv as the display and plan to network it to my imac wireless with the airport.
Is there anything else any recommends? Any pitfalls? Is Dvi to DVI the way to go?
    Thanks in advance.
    Andrew

I use my G5 as a media centre, and it's in the office.
However I use Elgato's eyeHome to stream my media to the TV in the front room via my wireless network.
This means that the G5 is not taking up space or making excessive noise.
eyeHome will work even if you don't use eyeTV (which I do).

  • How can I set up a wireless network between two Mac Mini's (media centres)?

I've just received my second mac mini (core duo, 1.83, 1 Gb ram)and want to set up a wireless network to link this with my original mac mini (PPC 1.42, 512MB) and my Belkin wireless router (g std).
I'm using both as media centres in different rooms and want to keep all my media (films, photo's, music etc.) on one mini (connected to a 640GB external drive) and access it over the wireless network. Sort of a more felxible Apple TV setup??
I've got the wireless network working no problems with both mini's connected to the internet over the network but I'm stuck at how I get the two mini's to see each other. I've tried "the Missing Manual" and these forums but no success so far.
I know it can be done but would really appreciate any suggestions/directions on what to do?
    Thanks in advance<<br>

  • I can't syn my 2nd gen nano work with Windows XP Media Centre Edition (SP2)

I recently got a new computer with Windows XP Media Centre Edition (SP2) and a 2nd gen Nano. I have the latest version of itunes but when I plug in the Nano it won't sync.
The Nano is nowhere to be seen in itunes and shows in My Computer with an exclamation mark over it. The only thing it will do is charge.
The Nano syncs on my sisters computer which has Windows XP (SP1) and other devices work on the USB ports on my computer.
Does anyone have a clue what is wrong or what I can do.
I've had the Nano for nearly four months now and it's driving me mad!!!

    Problem solved:
I used driver guide to download usbstor.sys and usbstor.inf then placed these files in my i386 folder. Then when I restarted my PC and connected my iPod I selected the i386 folder as the location to search for drivers. After that it recognised my iPod as a storage device and installed it.

  • My MacBook cannot resolve the alias when attempting to connect to LAN wired devices (WD Live Media Centre), and says operation can't be comp-leted because the original item can't be found.???

I have 2 WD Live Media Centre devices hard-wired on my LAN. My MacBook can find these devices on the network, but when it tries to access the USB drive which is attached to the media centres, a message says the Mac it "resolving the alias to USB drive", but then says operation can't be completed because the roiginal item (USB Drive) can't be found. My PC, which is also hard-wired on the network, has no problem accessing these USB drives. Is there some adjustment I need to make?

Well, try this (I was able to fix my with these steps):
    Go Utilities > Disk Utility
Select your Startup Disk, e.g. Macintosh HD
Then, under the First Aid Tab, click Verify Disk Permissions.
If there are errors, then click repair Disk Permissions.
After it is done, restart the computer and see if your problem is resolved.
    I hope this help.

Sadly I do not have a TV Tuner Card. I run Windows Vista Home Premium (x64). It is also a custom computer I built. But based on the replies it's suggesting I need one? That a simple USB connection between the two will not be sufficient?
I dont think that your cable box can stream contents thru its USB ports, that wont work. Also check your video card s-video plug, most likely it's video out only (for TV monitor). You need some kind of input device for your pc to be able to connect it to your cable box, either a TV tuner card, a capture card (usb or pci card) etc.

  • Minimum specs for use as a media centre?

I would like to have a Mac Mini hooked up to my tv to use as a media centre. i have worked out that i will be able to use it without a keyboard mouse etc by setting it up so front row or vlc load up on boot and using the remote, so am ok there...
my question is this - what is the recomended spec for it to be able to play hd movie rips in .mkv/mp4 format? i have a 1.25ghgz emac an that suffers horribly so i want something that will do the job effortlessly. obviously i could just buy the very latest MM but am looking to save a bit of cash if possible!
    thanks for any advice...

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
It might help to know in what way the 1.25 eMac suffers horribly in this situation, because in reality, the media centre functions of a system don't require particularly high performance or system specifications. For example, I have a 1.5 G4 mini hooked up to a TV, use Front Row to play mp4 movie files and either VLC or DVD player to play DVDs and it performs pretty well. The quality of image of the mp4 playback depends on settings when the files were ripped more than anything, and the overall quality of image depends a lot on the TV rather than the system.
It must be said that the almost any of the Intel minis is considerably more powerful than your eMac, but in itself, power isn't necessarily the answer!
