No "power" in system profiler
I've been having a problem with my computer shutting down when not plugged in. In the past, it use to warn that it was going to sleep - but as soon as you plugged it in, it would come back up. Now, it just shuts down, no warning, and you have to restart once plugged in. I looked in here and got the clue about checking cycles in the system profiler, but I don't have a power option in the system profiler...am i looking in the right spot?
Panther does not have the power tab in system preferences, that was introduced with Tiger. There is a another way to check, (using command lines in the Terminal.app) but I don't know the command line for checking.

UM-ONE
Roland supplied CD-ROM does not mount or read by iMac OS 10.8.2, works with old TiBook and Dell laptop, however.
Got latest driver from RolandUS.com (um_1mx8d_v100), installed as directed.
No power ready light shows when connecting UM-ONE.
System Profile shows it there, but not configured.
With Audio MIDI Setup opened to MIDI Studio window, UM-ONE does not appear.
Tried many things without success. Tried swapping UM-1X (formerly on Dell laptop) with UM-ONE. UM-ONE installed and worked there without any issues. MIDI instrument communicates fine.
The UM-1X works without complaint and as expected when connected to any USB port on either the Dell or iMac, even a hub or keyboard port, just as it formerly had before changing operating systems, etc. It is old, but reliable.
Upshot is, for now, that UM-1X works with either the Dell or the iMac, but is currently attached to the iMac. UM-ONE (2011 model) only works with the Dell (Windows XP).Same problem here! The only difference is that I'm using a MacBook pro 13 inch (2011)

Power Mac G4 (MDD) - ATA 100 bus missing in system profiler?
It seems our ancient MDD G4's 20gig hard drive has started to show signs that it may die soon. (Clicking, system stall/freezes, etc...) While I have no problem performing drive replaements on my own hardware, this one has managedto toss a wrench into the works...
As of this evening, the MDD G4 stopped booting from drives on the ATA100 bus, but is still booting from the other ATA bus we have the DVD-RW drive installed on. What I can't figure out, however, is why the ATA100 bus is no long showing up in system profiler, even with the drive removed.
Just to be sure the drive itself was still functioning, I temporarily installed it into my old PowerMac G3 tower and was even able to boot from it.
So, my question is, is the ATA100 bus on the G4's motherboard actually fried, or is the thing playing possum under system profiler without anything connected to it? I don't want to go to the expense of adding a nice new internal drive, only to have the G4 kill it.
Any thoughts?My MDD (1.25G SP with 10.4.11) has two drives on the ATA100 (ATA-6) bus and the ATA66 (ATA-5) bus is empty; the 66 bus, although I know it's working (I've used it recently), does not show up in SP. The optical drive properly appears on ATA-3. So the bus doesn't have to appear in SP without something attached.
I somewhat hesitate to ask---did you check all the connectors on the ribbon cable? I'm pretty adept at mucking about inside computers but I had another Mac tower model that gave the symptoms you have and, after a day of thinking up new cusswords, I found the drive end of a the ribbon cable was slightly unseating as I closed the case due to a too-short ribbon.
MDDs should be jumpers "cable select." -
IPod not recognized by iTunes & Disk Utility - Recognized by System Profile
I have a 40GB iPod Clickwheel (4th Gen?) that i'm trying to fix back to life since my mini was just stolen and i'm out on the road on tour all the time. my iPod actually powers up by itself just fine, the battery life is just peachy, and it can run independently without songs (i'm able to look around just as though i had songs on there - i can play games, alter settings, etc etc.).
However, there's a few things i've noticed!
When i go to the iPod's about menu (when disconnected from the computer), it shows there's no songs, that there's 0 capacity, 0 available - shows that the version is 3.1.1, the serial and model numbers, but the format is unknown.
I've tried plugging the dang thing into my computer to much avail - IF iTunes recognizes it, it says it needs to be restored -- GREAT! so i try to restore the iPod, however, i almost instantly get an error: The iPod cannot be restored because it is currently busy. When i clicked the help tag, it says it's a common problem in iTunes 7.0 - great, i have 8.0.2; and i've tried running everything from a restart on the ipod to a restart on the computer, updating all my system files, running the iPod in disk mode, etc, but nothing seems to make it want to restore.
when i look in system profiler; it shows that the iPod is hooked up to my USB port (which is just fine, and i've never had problems running a click-wheel iPod through that before); however both Disk Utility and iTunes do not acknowledge it's existence. what gives?
is my iPod a goner? how would i go about restoring this so i can use it? I've tried it on my Power PC (Specs below) as well as trying it on an iBook and iMac; with the same results every time. i know it's not the cable, because the iPod actually charged via that cable last night!
any help!?If you can get it to show up in Disk Utility, try reformatting (erasing) it in Disk Utility. If that process completes without stalling or errors, quit Disk Utility and run iTunes. Immediately attempt to do another Restore to install the iPod's software and initialize.
If the iPod does not erase successfully (it should take less than one minute for a standard erase) in Disk Utility, the iPod's hard drive may be faulty. -

Error messages in Console Log of Apple System Profiler
Today, I manually executed some CRON scripts from the Terminal window as part of a regular maintenance cycle. Before doing so, I ran the Apple System Profiler (OS 10.2.8), clicked on the Logs tab, and checked the Console Log. It had three days of error messages and other info (more on this later), but my intent was just to check the last entries in the log before running the CRON scripts, so that I could detect any additional errors logged as a result of the CRON scripts.
Having checked the log, I quit the Profiler and all other applications. Then I opened the Terminal window and entered:
sudo periodic monthly
I was prompted for my adminstrator password, and it then executed the script. It took just seconds to execute. Following this, I also executed
sudo periodic weekly
sudo periodic daily
The weekly CRON took about 2 minutes to finish, and the daily only a few seconds. I ran Apple System Profiler again and checked the console log and found this additional error message (not present prior to running the scripts):

Can anyone tell me what this error means, and what, if anything, I should do about it?
Following all of this, I next repaired my permissions with Disk Utility (and yes, after dragging iTunes 6.0.2 to the desktop). I then ran the profiler, checked the log, and encountered these two additional error messages:

The errors are identical. They presumably were generated by my running disk permissions, as other applications were shut down. It appears the error refers to the Suffit application.
Any ideas what causes these errors?
Finally, a last question. (And thanks for being patient with such a long post.) The console log contains a large number of error messages for each day. This occurs even on days when I have had no apps hang, or any other system problems (power failures, etc.) that I was aware of. Many of the errors seem to involve windows manangement. The most common one is:

Yes, it is common, and I wouldn't worry about it.
These "errors" are not about anything wrong. My guess is that it's a developer jargon to indicate that something didn't happen, only because there is no possibility of it happening given your specific settings/system options.
See for example the statements "System woke from sleep" or "System going to sleep" in "error_log"...
We don't know to what extend these "errors" belong to so many unmodified files that used to do something in UNIX 15 years ago, but are now completely useless, harmless and so small they can't affect Mac OS X performance in any way?

IPod shows up in system profiler but not in /dev and disk utility
Hi,
I have a Problem with my iPod. It works perfectly when I connect it to other macs.
Though on my mac it appears only in the system profiler, but not in itunes, /dev or diskutilities. Other USB devices are working correctly.
I already reseted my ipod but this doesn't solve the problem. Neither did the update of the iPod firmware.
Does somebody know this Problem? What can I try to solve it?

It's a MacBook Pro, 2,16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, running 10.4.11I'm pretty upset. It seems that the only solution to this problem is to buy some new mac products!
I have Applications on my computer that will not work on a new system and I don't want to update my system + all expensive apps just because my ipod refuse to downgrade.
I used to be a mac fan and I still like it, but this kind of "tricks" are unacceptable. I bought an ipod because I didn't want to spend time on fixing some stupid problems and now I already spent weeks trying to make my expensive ipod work on my mac (and all this because of a stupid firmware problem). I am now really disapointed.
So if anyone should have an idea on if it's possible to downgrade my ipod (or other solution?) in order to make it work again with my system, please post it here. Thanks. -
External Hard Drive in System Profiler not on desktop
The system profiler recognizes my firewire drive (though it has a corrupted looking title: "m(õc‰ìÎÜÒ”≥’:". I can't access the drive itself. I've tried disk warrior, disk utility and Data Rescue II in an effort to get in (so I can put the info on another drive) and none of them find the drive at all.
Any ideas (beyond cycling power or changing to different cables/ports) how I can get to the drive so I can salvage anything off of it?

If you simply put files in the Trash you can restore them by opening the Trash (left-click on the Trash icon) and drag the files from the Trash to your Desktop or other desired location. OS X also provides a short-cut to undo the last item moved to the Trash -press COMMAND-Z.
If you empty the Trash the files are gone. Recovery is possible but you must not allow any additional writes to the hard drive - shut it down. When you delete files you erase only the directory entries, not the files themselves. However, the space occupied by the files has been returned to the system as available for storage. Writing to the drive will then eventually overwrite the space once occupied by the deleted files in which case the files are lost permanently. Also if you save a file over an existing file of the same name, then the old file is overwritten and cannot be recovered.
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten with recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro. Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

DVD stuck, drive not recognized in system profiler, can't eject, HELP!
I am distraught, my DVD/CD drive is quite sick, if not dead. Alright, I watch DVDs on my computer somewhat regularly, but this one time I was about an hour into a movie when it just stopped playing. I couldn't finish the movie because now my computer doesn't recognize the disc or even the fact that it has a DVD/CD drive at all. The DVD doesn't appear on the desktop and the eject button doesn't do anything, it's been stuck my drive for maybe a month or so and I forgot about it for a while actually.
The scariest thing is that when I check my system profiler I can't find any info about my DVD drive. When I click on disc burning, it says I dont have a disc burning device installed.
I've tried resetting the power manager (PMU) but to no avail. I would really like to solve this without taking my computer somewhere.

Simple step first. If the "stuck" is due to a software problem, restart the computer holding down the click pad through the start-up until the disk ejects. This usually ejects anything in the drive.
You'll find other suggestions here (Donald Worrell post).
If none of the above suggestion work, you'll need to get a technician (Apple certified, if still under warranty) to look at the machine. If the DVD ejects, but the profiler still does not recognize the drive, then a trip to the Technician is your only recourse. -
Optical drive not recognized in system profile after hardware rebuild
This is an old MacBook Pro. Apple call it vintage.
Logic board died, so rather than consign it being a doorstop, I took out the logic board and "cooked" it to reflow the solder. It actually worked!
Just prior to this and just before the logic board completely bit the dust I'd inserted a DVD into the optical drive, where it sat and didn't read, wasn't recognized etc. I was trying to drop back down in OS as Lion was too resource hungry for the old machine, so it was an OS install disk. Panther I think?
So now I've got the logic board working, but I cannot remove the DVD. I tried all the tricks, including Terminal etc. On checking System Profile I noticed that the optical drive isn't even listed now. So my question is, is it possible I missed a connection etc when rebuilding the MBP after replacing the logic board? If so, thoughts on where I should look? Is there a way to "force" the OS to find the optical drive? Any thoughts on what to do?
I can't pull the optical drive as one of the screws is completely stripped and honestly, not sure if the laptop is even worth the cost of a replacement drive anyway.Ok, that's it. I read a few posts in the "...SuperDrive won't accept my CD.." section. and it seems some people are just swapping optical drives like mad, ready to accept that the kit is crap, and "...oh, well, I sure hope this one works better...".
But one guy had the brains to have a look inside. Turns out dust had accumulated in the drive and on the connectors, and when he cleaned them, and unplugged and replugged them, it worked fine. So that's what I did. Took it out and put it back in. Amazing the stuff I cleared out! I also un- and re-plugged the power cable and the data ribbon at the mutha board and bingo!. We have disk, and I can breathe again.
Recommend to others they pretend they've bought a new drive, do a remove and reinstall and be very fastidious. You may not need a new one after all. I just love it that stuff can still be FIXED!

CS-4 Vista 64 Bit Installation problems - "checking system profile...."
Hello All:
I know that this has been discussed in the past, but I was hoping that perhaps someone has determined a fix for the following problem.
Background: In the past, with Windows XP Professional, I never had problems with loading any Adobe products. But just last week I reluctantly upgraded to Windows Vista Home Premium because it came with a new power system PC that I purchased (AMD quad-core 2.4 gHz Phenom CPU, 8 Gigs of RAM and 1 TB HD) and this is where my problems began:
Nature of problem: I loaded the latest versions of Lightroom and Adobe Elements just fine - absolutely no problems there. But when I tried to load my Photoshop CS-4 upgrade disk, it never gets past the "checking system profile" bar at the very beginning of the install process. I mean to say that you initially get the install window and when you click "install," a small window comes up which indicates "checking system profile." Then the progress indicator goes all the way to the right - around 90% to the right but then just hangs there - and I mean stays there...period. I tried this several times, eventually having to use control/ALT/Delete in each instance to get it to stop. I even let it stay there for over 6 hours - all to no avail. What I found interesting is that just about all of my older programs - even those dating back to 2001 - all installed without a problem at all.
2. Actions I took to try and correct this:
a. Then, in my attempt to find fixes for this, I made sure to close out any background programs that were running (and Vista has a million of 'em), to include Firewall, Windows Defender, any other malware and anti-virus programs, not to mention a bunch of smaller programs that have items running in the background. Then I tried loading CS-4 again....but still no go, the "checking system profile" indicator just hangs at 90% complete. Note that at no time did the install process ever load any files at all - I checked everything to ensure this wasn't the case, otherwise I would have removed them.
b. On my next try, I then I copied all of the files from the CD to a folder on my desktop and tried to run the program from there - still no go as the "checking system profile" window still hangs at 90% I even tried loading the program by right clicking on the exe file and installing "as administrator," but that didn't do the trick either.
c. Then I rebooted into safe mode, trying both to load the programs first from the CD and then from the desktop folder - still no go, but in this case it told me right up front that the action was unable to be completed. I assumed this meant that in Windows Safe Mode, the installer was not available.
Help Needed: So folks, I know this has been discussed in the past, but I don't know of any fixes that are available. Can anybody help me through this process? You can also send me direct emails at: [email protected] - which means I'd get them right away.
This has been driving me up a wall because some other folks with Vista 64 Bit systems report that they had no problems with installation. Again - it never makes it to installation, but gets hung up at the "checking system profile" stage.

Fuquay-Varina, North CarolinaI believe you are falling victim to some known incombatibility of LR vs. PS CS4 installer. This should be covered in the knowledge base, so check there. A short way to happiness may be using the CS4 Clean Utility to remove the debris from the failed installs and unregister other Adobe installs, then install PS CS4, but since I don't use LR and never have tried this, I'm not sure if this specific case is covered.

I am running OS 10.4.7 on a PowerMAC G4 Dual Gig 2002 Quicksilver with
3 hard drives:
- TWO 250 GB SATA Drives (Both partitioned into 3 sections: 132 GB which is my MAIN drive, 90 GB which is used to back up music, and 53 GB which is used to hold finished work. The other drive is partitioned into 3 sections: 60 GB which is a back up of my MAIN drive, 126 GB which I record music to, and 58 GB which I use for Photoshop/Video finished work.) The SATA drives are connected via PCI card (described below)

you could try reseting your PRAM to see if that makes any difference, as this holds your systems parameters. You shouldn't hurt your Mac by resetting them.
To reset PRAM hold down AppleAlt+PR on startup until it chimes 3 to 5 times then release.
Also...
Let the Mac boot after a PRAM reset then restart to reset your Open Firmware which may also help. At Startup hold AppleAlt+OF then type at the light grey screen (all without speech marks) "reset-nvram" then press return key. Then type "rest-all" then press return key again. Then type "mac-boot" press return to exit.
These command may help you they may not, but they shouldn't hinder you in any way. But if you are in any doubt about these commands by all means research them further on the Apple website or just ask for a second opinion.

CPU not showing up in System Profiler

I have a 4 year old Dual 2.5 GHz G5 which I think has had a CPU failure (B CPU). The system profiler states that I only have one, not two CPU's.
Is it a case of using a repair CD to reset the lost CPU or is it dead?

inbuilt isight camera is detected in system profiler but no image is being detected only a black screen shows up. I have tried all of the troubleshooting instructions and it still wont work. The iMac im using is OS X 10.6 and was an ex-floor model
Hi,
I would try a Safe Boot first. (This will take longer than a normal Boot and you will need to Restart afterwards).
If it were an older OS I would also suggest going to System Preferences > Displays and making sure the display is set to Millions. (My MacBook Pro does not have this option in Snow Leopard so I did presume Snow Leopard does not have it).
With some laptops there have been some issues with the cable up the back of the screen pulling loose with regular and frequent use of the lid, but this will not apply to you based on your specs. (it does take time to appear and is also somewhat rare). However it seems enough contact with the camera can make it appear in System Profiler and power it on but not give a pic.
If a Safe Boot does not work I would also try a PRAM reset.
Shut down the computer.
Restart it holding down Apple/CMD (or ⌘)+ALT( ⌥)+P+R Keys until you have heard three Start Up Bongs.
This is actually "less" destructive in that it clears less memory items than Safe Boot but they are different enough to warrant trying.
Do you have an older version of iGlasses installed ?
The one for Leopard does not work for Snow Leopard.
Do you have Web Browser open ?
This may point to Google Video Chat Plug-in and Flash Conflict. It would be rare to allow another app to access the camera even if not displayiong a Pic.
(Chrome Installs the Plug-in as does the standalone download).
Knowing what "any application" exactly you are trying might help us pin it down.
Any additional downloaded apps that can use the camera ?
Do you happen to have something balck in front of the camera ?

My MacBook is about a year and half old. My battery just started doing this a few days ago. It shows as not charging. Checking the battery shows that it has 85% power left (this was 86% the day it started). The magsafe connector stays green. The MacBook will not run without the power connected.
I am not sure if this is an issue with the battery, the batteries connector, or with my MacBook. I'm pretty tight fro cash right now and need my MacBook working. I don't have money to throw at parts I don't need. If anyone has experienced this issue before and has any insight please let me know. I'm a starving web programmer and I need to be able to bring my MacBook with me to meet with clients.

Charging: NoDo you think it is software. It will not even boot when the power is not connected. I was thinking it was a problems with ACPI in the EFI BIOS. The strange thing is just a moment ago the magsafe went orange and the power states calculating. This is the first time I've seen the magsafe orange since this started four days ago. I came back to this thread to update it with this little tidbit and saw your reply.
