No power when monitor attached

I use a donated MAC G4. All was well until I disconnected my drive to move it. Now, with all connections correct, I can not turn it on. When I disconnect all but the power cord, the unit turns on. But as soon as a monitor is connected, the power goes off. With the monitor connected it will not turn on at all: no lights, no fans, nothing.
Help please.

Is this a monitor with a VGA, ADC or DVI connector? Try a different monitor.

IF RESET DOESN'T WORK, FORCE IPAD INTO RECOVERY MODE
    1. Turn off iPad
    2. Turn on computer and launch iTunes (make sure you have the latest version of iTune)
    3. Plug USB cable into computer's USB port
    4. Hold Home button down and plug the other end of cable into docking port. Do not release button until you see picture of iTunes and plug (very important)
    5. Release Home button.
    ON COMPUTER
    6. iTunes has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes.
    7. Select "Restore iPad"...

  • Crazy crazy crazy! Airport loses internet when second monitor attached!

Can this really be happening? I decided to try using a second monitor attaching via a mini dvi -dvi converter. Several attempts to get it recognised by the iMac without any success. Scoured the internet groups to see that very many (and I mean very many) others had this problem.
Solved it by swapping my dvi-I lead for a dvi-D lead. The difference is that the DVI-I lead has fewer pins than the DVI-D lead and the iMac mini dvi socked supplies a DVI-D signal. Phew!
So--pleased with myself at surmounting this I fired up Final Cut Pro, dragged the canvas window to the second monitor and had to play around with the resolution setting to get a stable playing of the timeline.
Decided to go on online and see if I was alone on this.
    NO INTERNET CONNECTION!!!
30 mins later decided to unplug the second monitor (Philips 200) and got back my inet connection.
Tried the routine again and sure enough each time the second monitor was connected I lost the Airport connection!
Is it possible that the proximity of the second monitor fouls the wireless signal?
    Or what?

    Kaybee31 wrote:
So far no one has either claimed the same problem or offered a possible explanation.
As I said this loss of internet connection when 2nd monitor is connected is unbelievably odd.
It sounds like another case of EMI (Electromagnetic interference). I believe this is at the root of all these weird Airport or wireless problems. Interestingly enough many of these anomalies are exhibited on the newer generation Macs. Different materials were used, shielding could have been compromised either for cost cutting or by design error. Regardless I'm sure Apple is aware, unfortunately those who purchased these machines may be in the worse case, left with hard wiring for reliable internet and or network connections.......sorry.....

  • HELP!! my computer shuts down at random ONLY when power supply is attached

I still have the factory power supply. My problem just happens when ever it feels like it. I could be watching something on Quicktime or have Adium running. I have had it happen to me regardless if it was being used a little or a lot. But It ONLY happens when my power supply is attached. If I plug in my power supply to charge my computer it will shut off. I have read some other posts pointing to the problem being the logic board and that a few of the iBook G4's are subject. If this is a common problem with this computer model I think Apple should recall them and fix the problem. Any insight will be great.

Alright everyone it has been a week since I replaced my DC board and no problems. But we all know how Murphy's law works BUT I'm calling this one fixed. Thanks for your suggestions and help

MacBook Pro won't stay asleep with external monitor attached.  When sleep is selected from the Apple menu the computer will go to sleep only to continually wake up...go back to sleep...wake up...etc. every few seconds.  This only happens when using the external monitor. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Mine does that too. The worst thing is when it goes to sleep, then wakes up and keeps running while the lid is closed and it is wrapped up in a case. I am afraid when the hot weather comes it is going to burn up. I am hoping Apple fixes it in the software or they may have a melted MBP to replace.
Then when I open the lid it is crashed running at fill tilt, pumping out heat to beat the band. I am forced to hold the button down and reboot.
I wiped my hard disk and reinstalled my OS, but it didn't help. I reversed my OS to 10.5.0 and it solved the DVI problem but still won't sleep. This post will probably be deleted by Apple, they did it a few days ago. I just don't know what to do, and I consider myself a real Apple expert. Just hoping you realize you are not the only one.

  • No audio when with second monitor attached and using Extend, Duplicate,or Second Screen Only modes

When I attached a second monitor via HDMI cable and try to use Duplicate, Extend, or Second Screen only display modes, I can get the video to display and run but I get no audio unless I set the notebook display settings to P/C Only mode.  I really want to use the second screen for PowerPoint/Presenter View and play a embedded video (along with the sound).  Even if I try to play a YouTube video I can only get audio when in P/C Screen Only mode.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
    A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
For old and other versions of iPod updater for window you can get here
    http://www.ipodwizard.net/showthread.php?t=7369
    F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
    Intermediate Level
    A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
    B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.

    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

    Advance Level
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ or ifixit at your own risk
    http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
    http://www.ifixit.com/
Just in case that you are at the following situation
    Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning !!!! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
    Last Resort Level
    1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)
    http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=Video/directory.html
2.Press the reset button on the Hard Drive inside the iPod – Suggestion from Kill8joy
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2438774#2438774
Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

I am not suggesting that you should follow as well, but just read them as your reference. You are the person to make the call.
Finally, I read a fair comments from dwb, regarding of slapping the back of the iPod multiple times
Quote “This has been discussed numerous times as a 'fix'. It does work, at least for a while. In fact I remember using the same basic trick to revive Seagate and Quantam drives back in the mid to late 1980's. Why these tiny hard drives go bad I don't know - could be the actuator gets stuck in place or misaligned. Could be the platter gets stuck or the motor gets stuck. 'Stiction' was a problem for drives back in the 80's. Unfortunately the fix can cause damage to the platter so we temporarily fix one problem by creating another. But I know of two instances where a little slap onto the table revived the iPods and they are still worked a year or more later.”UnQuote

  • Helix can't boot without a 2nd monitor attached

    Hi,
I maintain a Helix (36984RU) that gets used for presentations.  It will not boot to Windows without a second monitor attached.   I can hear the fan spin up and the unit gets warm, but the screen remains blank.  The only thing I can do is to shutdown by holding down the power button.
When booting with a 2nd monitor or projector attached, the startup Lenovo logo appears on the 2nd screen and the laptop screen remains blank.  When the Windows login screen appears, it appears correctly on the laptop screen.  I've checked the Windows Screen Resolution page and it correctly shows the laptop monitor as the primary monitor.
This issue presents itself whether or not I disconnect the 2nd monitor prior to shutdown/restart, or whether I remove the 2nd monitor before restart.  It also does not make a difference if I start in tablet or docked mode.
I've updated the BIOS to version 1.29 and have checked that the boot display device is set to Thinkpad LCD, and not either of the two displayport options.
Any tips on this would be greatly appreciated,
    Thanks!

I don't know what it is - I have Enable Transmit on the Program monitor to enable it to do so, and I can't go back to 7.0 or 6.0 as I'm now working on projects in 7.0.1 and don't want to keep chopping and changing.

  • Memory upgrade - now won't boot or wake when peripherals attached

I just bought 2x1GB PC2700 333Mhz 200 Pin DDR SODIMM and now if I have my external monitor attached or anything USB attached (even just a mouse) it will not power up. When I unplug the monitor and/or USB it powers up fine.
I've already had the memory exchanged as the original upgrade memory was incompatible (had the same incompatibility problem when I replaced one of the 256's for a 512 at time of purchase).
Anyone else have this or know the fix?
It's not deadly, just annoying to not be able to put it to sleep after 4 years of using it without any problems.
    Appreciate any help.

I have the same problem. This just happened a couple weeks ago. I purchased a discounted version of 10.4 online, and installed it. That's when everything started acting odd. I have 1.25 gig of RAM. One day the computer locked up, rebooted and clicked on about this mac and it said that only 256 of RAM was installed. I turned the computer off, opened the RAM slot, removed the memory and re-installed. All was well. A couple hours later, the same thing happened again. I thought it was the RAM going bad, so I swapped the location of the RAM, put the 256 in the lower and the 1gig in the upper. Restarted and waited. A couple hours go by until it locks up, then Re-boot. This time it says I only have 1 gig of RAM. Definitely the lower slot going bad on the logic board. ifixit.com has the board for $450, but out of stock. Funny how Apple's recall is only for the 1.5~1.6 machines...

Just started getting a MESSAGE SEND FAILURE response when I attach n send a photo with my texts. Why? How do I fix it?

Did you try what was suggested on that page i.e. disconnecting the iPad from your computer and turning the iPad off (press and hold the sleep/wake button until the red 'slide to power off' appears on screen and slide that) and then back on ?
And if the backup doesn't work after that then try a soft-reset instead of the off and on : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Mac mini will not boot up with two monitors attached

New Mac mini running OS 10.10.1. I have a LCD monitor attached to the HDMI port, and a Cintiq 21 UX LCD monitor attached to a thunderbolt port.
It boots up properly with only the first LCD monitor attached to the HDMI port.
When I leave both monitors connected before starting the computer I get no chime, and a black screen. The light on the front of the Mac mini comes on, but nothing else happens. I have to turn off the Mac mini, unplug the second monitor and then reboot. It always starts up perfectly then. After starting the computer, I plug the second monitor in, and everything is fine.
It’s kind of a pain in the neck to constantly plug and unplug the second monitor from the back of the Mac mini. Is there anything I’m overlooking?

Thank you, Illaass! Resetting the SMC solved the problem! I tried that first because I would prefer not to lose any preferences, and also because it was the easiest to try. You must be a genius in addition to being such a good egg!
(This is the number of smiles I smiled after my Mac mini booted properly with both monitors connected.)

  • OSX 10.6.3 scrambles video on MacBook screen when external attached

As a teacher I use a projector all day long. After upgrading from 10.6.2 to 10.6.3 last night without incident I was surprised to find out in class today that the screen on my MacBook scrambles when I attach the projector and go into slideshow mode in PowerPoint. Exiting slideshow doesn't fix it, unplugging the projector does. I soon discovered that it's not limited to slideshows. My screensaver triggers it too. So does going full screen in Quicktime Player. Basically anything going full screen when the projector is plugged in does it.
I just tried it at home expecting the same results, but my external monitor doesn't trigger it. Hmmm, I'm using a DVI connection to the monitor whereas the projector is VGA. Does that sound like a driver issue? If so, why is the picture just fine on the external display, but the internal screen is messed up?
I don't understand. I see others are having display issues too. Has anyone found the answer?

There are several ways to contact Apple listed through the "Contact Us" link at the bottom of every page.
