No Power With Neo2 Platinum

I posted this problem earlier, and somehow it double-posted.  Now the posts are gone, so I will try again.
I just bought a Neo2 Platinum today, but I cannot get any power to it.  I have made sure the power button connection is good; I have replaced the power supply; I have pulled everything out of the motherboard except for the CPU.  Still can't get the thing to power on.  What can be the problem?

Thanks for the psu details. it would do no harm to post the rest Graphic card drives CPU. Add them to your signature then there there every time you post, saves a lot of re-typing. You can even get them looking better than rollercam's .(RC - It seems shorter now what u altered)
yes your psu is low on the 12v rail & may cause issues down the road. but should at least turm over the fans.

for now check:-1) CPU Fan cable is connected to motherboard CPUFan1
2) 4pin 12v Cable from PSU is connected to Mobo (clip aligns correctly with mobo)
3) 20pin cradle connecter is aligned & seated properly.
4) case power connectors are properly connected to mobo JFP1 & JFP2 see page 31 of manual.
Checked out ok.
If you have any front panel usb/fireware leads from your case unplug thenm, the connectors may not be compatable & may be shorting.
If still nothing
Then try taking mobo out of case in case there's a short somewhere.
Mount mobo on a piece of cardboard, the tray from the mobo box is ideal, or a wodden table. mount just memory try 1 module only 1st in slot 1, graphics card, plug in 12v 4 pin & 20pin cradle. Connect case power switch.
this option also gives you chance to recheck the risers that your mobo rests on make sure there are no extra ones, should be 9, & check that these align with mobo screw holes.
Also check that the backplate for the mobo back panel clips securely in case. If loose it's been known to make contact with pors/mobo & produce shorts.
Whilst board is out of case you might also check cpu is mounted correctly.

  • Cooler compatibility with Neo2 Platinum

    Hello,
Would anyone know if the Thermaltake Mini Typhoon CPU Cooler, CL-P0268, is compatible with MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum motherboard? Isn't it too heavy for that mobo?
Also, would anyone recommend Zalman CNPS 9500 led for the same mobo?
    Any other recommendation?
    Thank you in advance,
    Jose

Go for the Zalman, its much better than the Mini Typhoon. It will cause no problems with your motherboard.

    Overclocking issues with Neo2 Platinum

    hiya nocturnal
1st in Integrated Peripherals / IDE Function Setup....disable sata1/sata2 dma transfer and enable sata3/sata4 dma transfer...sata 3 is top on left side of board one closest to cpu.
2nd ... Cell Menu / DRAM configuration  is where you set memory timing 1T/2T
3rd...Cell Menu / AGP Frequency ..set it to 67
just My 2 cents but why don't you take Everything back to stock (cpu & vid card) , Do the above and see if it will boot. the biggest problem you have (my opinion) is your memory...you do not state if it is pc3200/400 ...if it is go 200 Max Memclock (step 2, 1st option)
set the CAS  settings to stock..see if you can boot to windows, then and only then go Play   as in see what your sandie will do with that memory..Leave your vid card stock until you get a stable windows enviorment...also if you do shift F2 ..alt F3 it opens up other settings within our bios
I believe you will be upgrading your memory real soon if ya got the o/c bug
    Hope this helps
ps...by the way what type of power supply do you have ?

  • AMD Venice booted with Neo2 Platinum BIOS 1.6

    Here is proof:
    CBBLE 0513CPBW
    http://valid.x86-secret.com ID no: 13770

Sorry, didnt try with BIOS 1.5. I got the 1.6 official from the Korean MSI webpage: http://www.msi-korea.co.kr/program/support/support_dld_detail.php?part=1&serials=66&uid=K8N%20Neo2%20플래티넘&name=소켓%20939%20(AMD%20K8)&chip_id=51 It works fine and is in english. Boots faster but temp probe still all wrong. Apparently my CPU is currently idling @ 15C. Add about 10-12 degrees to temps for a proper readout
It worked for me and many others on this forum but you should still be careful - I don't know if MSI released any revisions of the Neo2 plat.

  • Memory speed problems with Neo2 Platinum

Hi all -- I'm trying to figure out a problem I'm having getting my memory frequency up to speed. Right now I have two 512MB sticks of Crucial Ballistix PC4000 RAM but I can't get them running any faster than 166Mhz each (or 333 Mhz DDR). I'm using a AMD Athlon 64 3500+ processor and I've got my ratio set to "auto." Is there a memory frequency setting I'm missing? How can I get these sticks up to speed?
    Thanks!

dont worry - i did exactly the same! Not sure if was being a bit slow or the manual is written badly but it confused me
Out of curiosity what is core center reporting your cpu temp as? Mine says around 58c but im not sure if its just being reported wrongly ( even though a few people have said this 1.2 bios fixes the temp isssue ).

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum + Corsair CMX512-3200C2 timings

Is there someone on the boards with Neo2 Platinum and 2 x 512MB Corsair XMS 3200 (CMX512-3200C2) installed?
I've read from Ramguy and Corsair that the SPD timings on the sticks are done according to JEDEC standards and they don't default to the optimum speeds.
What could I squeeze out from these sticks without problems?

what do you have your volts set at?
@2.70V. All setting input manually (no Auto).
Well, i have 2 sticks of that same ram but there not TwinX. Could this be my problem, why i cant overclock it or cold it be that i have on harddrive on SATA connector. My Raid setup is on 3 & 4 and that should be locked.
I know TWINX modules are tested together so there must be a reason they do so (i.e. untested modules may not work). I use the SATA connector (3+4) so that is no problem for me. I have a modest overclock with these modules as the Corsair information I have read on them is that they are not for aggressive overclocking. Why you can't overclock (can't you even increase HTT from 200 to 201?) at all I have no idea. Sorry, I'm certainly no expert in these matters.

  • A few bios problems with my 915p Neo2 platinum board

I'm wondering af anyone here can help me.
I just got a new system and a friend of mine helped set up the bios for me, afterwards he failed to tell me how he had configured the bios (my first big mistake).
Since the buidling of the system there have been 3 short beeps at the beginning of startup. I was told that it was a warning system of some sort and when i looked it up, the informations pointed towards a problem with the RAM.
I ran memtest86 and it found no problems with the RAM, so i contacted the site i bought the parts from and they suggested i reset the bios.
I did so and the beeps remained, but my DVD and DVD-writer drives arent being detected anymore.
I took my PC around to another friends house with only his keyboard and monitor connected. The beeping had stopped before we changed anything. Bringing it back around to my house resulted in the beeping returning.
From this i gathered that the only things different may have been his power source and the peripherals i have attached to the back of the case. (speakers, printer, kb/m, etc)
Going by the manual map, my 2 HDDs are connected as slave/master in IDE port 1 and my two DVD drives are connected to the yellow IDE port that is closest to IDE port 1 (it's either IDE 2 or 3, the map isnt too clear on which is which).
Long story short, can anyone help me in identifying the source of the beeps and their meaning, an optimum setup for my bios and how to get my DVD drives to work.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me. I'm fairly new to building computers and my friends are the type to suddenly become unavailable as soon as a problem arises.
edit: just noticed i missed the spec description part menitoned in the rules.

second attempt at clearing up the garbled mess from above.
Motherboard is making 3 short beeps on startup. Indication of a problem with memory. I've established that it's something external that causing the beeps as the memory has checked out fine with memtest86. Hence i will be checking all the attached devices.
I was guided to reset the bios in an attempt to clear up this problem above. Doing so has resulted in my bios being unable to detect my DVD drives.
My DVD-drives are connected to IDE port 2/3 (manual is unclear on which is which).
Everything was in working order (with the exception of the beeping) before the bios was reset but due to my lack of knowledge/involvement with the original configuration of the bios, i'm at a loss as to how to fix it.
If anyone could recommend me any updates for the bios, or could advise me on how to configure my bios accordingly to the parts i have i would be most appreciative. Also, if osmeone would be abel to shed some light on the beeping issue i would be thankful also.

I saw this and was wondering if i should install it. It would be the equivelent of resetting the bios again wouldnt it? So it wouldnt be that much of a step back from where i am at the moment and it might be able to sort my IDE problems.

Nothing has ever been overclocked on this system.
Everything is plugged into a Belkin Surgemaster powerbar.
I haven't mentioned the power supply. I'll get to that. I have been using an ANTEC NEOPOWER 480W POWER SUPPLY (ATX12V  DUAL 12V RAILS ACTIVE PFC W/ DETACHABLE OUTPUT CABLES) for about a year on this system without
any issues. One morning, I wake up, hit the power button on my coolermaster case, and nothing happens.
CPU fan won't even spin. Nothing happens.
    O.k., blown power supply, I think . . . .
So I take out my Antec and put it in another system. That system turns on
    without any problems.
    Hmm . . .
I come here, and I read posts about
potential compatibility issues with Antec power supplies. But if it's a compatibility
issue why was my system working for about a year?
    O.k., fine. I'll buy a Enermax 535W EG565P-VE FMA 24P (115/230 VAC) power supply.
I just plug it into the mainboard (nothing else). Hit the power button . . .
The CPU fan spins for half a second, and then nothing.
Did my motherboard just suddenly die for no reason?
    Any suggestions?

Pull the AC plug from PSU and set cmos in clear position with battery removed for atlest 20 minutes perhaps longer .
Then try to post the system barebone .
Just cpu,1 pcs memory in slot 1 , gfx card , and keyboard in PS2.
No usb devices at all including card reader and no pci cards harddisks or cdoms/dvd/floppy.
It could also be caused by a short or a malfunctioning fan connected to mobo.
Try to disconnect all case fans from mobo headers if you have any connected to additional fan holders.
The chipset fan can also be disconnected momentarily just to see if it posts.
If none of this helps , replace cmos battery and try again .

  • Reboot problem with MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum and 250 GB SATA HDD

I'm having a "reboot" problem with my MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum. After turning my system on it will run without any problems, until I reboot. After a reboot it will always hang after the initial windows-bootscreen. The HDD-light will remain on. If, instead of going into Windows XP SP2, I try to enter the BIOS after a reboot (DEL) the system will also hang (blank screen with blinking cursor).
It started doing this after I installed the Maxtor 250 GB SATA disk. Before, I didn't have problems rebooting. If I disconnect the Maxtor drive I can reboot and enter BIOS and Windows each and every time. Reconnecting the Maxtor 250 GB SATA drive will return the reboot problem. I always have to use the power swith to get a working system again. It's not enough to do a hard reset (this has the same effect as rebooting).
Here are the details of my system:
    MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum (BIOS 1.B)
    Athlon 64 3200+ (Winchester, 2 Ghz, 512 KB cache, stepping DH-D0)
    2 x Kingston KVR400X64C25/512, 512 MB, DDR, PC3200 (2,5-3-3-8 T1)
Asus Radeon AX800 Pro (256 MB)
    PSU Antec Sonata 380W
HDD Maxtor 80Gb ATA (6Y080P0, Pri Master)
    HDD Seagate 250Gb SATA (ST3200822AS)
HDD Maxtor 250Gb SATA (6V250F0 - jumpered in SATA150 mode, the mobo wouldn't work with the drive in SATA300-mode)
Aopen COM5232/AAH Pro CD-Writer ATA (Sec Master)
BenQ DW1640 DVD-Writer ATA (Sec Slave)
P.S. The NVidia IDE-drivers are NOT installed. System is not overclocked.

Thank you for all the replies. Upgrading to the latest Nvidia IDE-drivers did not fix my problem. Moving to other SATA-ports did not help either. Upgrading the mobo's BIOS is not really an option (I'm using one version before the most recent and there isn't anything in the fixlist of the latest BIOS).
Now I've contacted Maxtor for (hopefully) a new firmware.

  • MSI NEO2 Platinum, problem with mouse Genius PS2 optical

    Hello,
I have a MSI NEO2 Platinum motherboard with a mouse Genius optical PS2. When the S.O. init the mouse is not detected, I unplug and plug again the PS2 port and the mouse work perfectly ! ... The mouse is working perfectly, I test it in another PC, the problem is the motherboard !
The same situation is on Windows XP Professional and Linux Ubuntu 5.10.
Please help me, thanks for your attention !
    Raúl.

    Raúl,
The PS2 slot is NOT a hot plug! If you remove and reinstall it while there is power to the mobo you stand a very good chance of destroying the PS2 Slot.
    Take Care,
    Richard

  • News - BIG PROBLEM - MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum - DOES NOT POWER!!!

    Hi to everyone.
I'm a proudly owner of a MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum that in one year gave me no problem until yesterday morning.
I used the computer in the night before and when I finished I turned it off and I went to bed.
Yesterday morning I found the power led blinking (like if the system was in standby), and there was no way to turn the PC on.
I even took off the battery for more than 12 hours and I left only minimal components installed:
the video card (Gainward GeForce 6800),
    the psu (Antec TruePower 550W),
    1 x 512 MB Ram Crucial Ballistix,
and I checked them into another computer and they work perfectly.
I tried shorting the MB power switch pins with a screwdriver and I've even tried to power on the system without the Memory or the Video Card... I've tried everything that came across my mind with no efforts!!!!
Every time I give power to the MB appens only that the power led starts blinking, but pressing the button the PC doesn't turn on.
PLEASE HELP ME... I really don't know what else to do!!!
    Thanks,
    Alberto

    Hi thanks for the answers.
I do have a D-Bracket, but my problem is not that the system does not boot or does not post... my system DOES NOT POWER ON (!!!!), so d-bracket is useless!
When I plug the system power    the only thing that happens is that the power led starts blinking (with the system still in soft-off), and if I press the power switch button nothing happens!
I've the bios for 7025 v1.8 and the settings where for OFF on power-loss ond pressing the button (can't rememeber if it was more than 4 sec) was meant to turn off the computer, but considering that I un-powered the pc more than once without the MB battery the settings should be factory default by now.
I went through the Windows-XP shut-down system, and i could not be an electrical problem as I always used the PC with a pretty good UPS unit.
Right now these are the full specs of my sytem:
    - MB MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum nForce3 Ultra
    - GAINWARD 6800 2600 GLH 256 MB Ram
    - PSU Antec TruPower 550 W
    - CPU AMD64 3500+ core Winchester @11*210 Mhz (this cpu has never overclocked very well)
    - HEATSINK Thermalright XP-90 with a 12 Cm Enermax Fan (CPU temp in always below 55 °C when stressed)
    - 1 x 512 Mb RAM Crucial Ballistix DDR400 optimized for  MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
I left only these things inside my computer in the hope that it would turn on... it did not work. I tested each component but the MB, and they work perfectly.
    Again...
Thanks for you efforts, any help will be appreciated.
    Alberto.
All parts have been tested: CPU/RAM/GFX/PSU/HD/DVD,  just not the MOBO ?
Checked if the MOBO is shorting in the case ?
Have you tried using the reset switch as power, on/off switch ?  I've seen before when the power switch stops working (lose/bad wire busted spring) after swapping  reset to power, then the system turned on. Worth a try, as sending it back to USA won't be cheap. If its over 1 year old it mite not be covered by the re-seller and or MSI. Best to check this out as law and warranty is different from country to country.
    Good Luck

  • Which power supply for k8n neo2 Platinum

I need to buy a new power supply for my computer. With the ATX12V v2.2 standard and ATX12V 2.01 and the "no -5v on new psu's" issue I'm at a loss as to what to look for. I have looked and cannot find what "standard" (is that even the correct term?) the k8n neo2 supports.
My main requirement is that the psu be 550-650 watts and have modular cables. I know someday I will have to upgrade my system to PCI-E and modern components, so I would like a PSU that would work now and in the future.
Could someone point me in the right direction?
    Many thanks

Why do you need 550-650W or is that just because of future needs? I would suggest one of the Corsair +12V single rail modular PSU's if you insist on the modular design. Check newegg for what they have for modular in the Corsair lineup. I'm sure you're aware that their price is considerably higher than the non-modular. K8 MB's that needed -5V are the early ones that had Creative Sound Blaster onboard audio.

That's what it is now but if you don't need it in a big hurry you can probably wait a while and get for the same price but with free shipping.
Edit: Gee, Ultra with blown caps, I just happen to have a xPRO 800W that blew some caps, repaired it and started going bad again and then got my TX650 to replace it. • K8N NEO2 PLATINUM HANGS WITH NVIDIA, WORKS WITH ATI???????????

    HI
I have endless problems with nivida cards on a MSI K8N NEO2 PLATINUM board.  I have tried 4 different nvidia cards and they all hang on any 3D app or game. NFSU2 looks like it lags in the menu already. It stops for 2 sec then goes again for about 10 secs.
Slot in any ATI grachics card and it works 100% for hours with no problems. I am runnig a 480W Antec psu aslo, so there is no power problem.
    Anybody have any idea???????????????????

well..i tried to oc my vid with 78.01  my comp rebooted in just a few seconds of game play...so i reset clock speeds to stock...got rid of 78.01's and installed 80.40 betas...so far so good..and i got this email replay from BFG asking for any fixes..here's a summary of what they said
"If you check the HardOCP forums as well as many others, issues with NF3 chipset motherboards are rampant. They seem to be limited to the implementation of a 64-bit processor with AGP architecture cards, fast ones in particular, but NOT limited to NVIDIA cards. People with fast ATI cards have the same issues... so don't act without investigating.
We have no point of action we can do for you in the matter. The chipset and drivers for it are made by NVIDIA, then implemented by different companies on their products. The exact same can be said for the GPU, chipset on the graphics cards and drivers for them. We're a manufacturer who uses their technology and unified drivers for our cards, but we make "OC" cards that run faster than NVIDIA designed their GPU and chips to run. NVIDIA can't control "how" the companies implement their technology, but makes every effort to create drivers to accommodate issues that crop up during the product 'life-cycle'."
ill say this...i personally havent seen anyone with an ATI having this issue..if anyone knows of that...please let me know...as much as i bashed ATI....i feel like im left with no choice  but to buy one(x850xt pe)if no one plans on fixing this for us..any imput is appreciated

  • Advanced Configuration and Power Interface - Slow boot on Neo2 Platinum

    Hi,
Recently I bought myself a Neo2 Platinum mainboard but in WinXP I got some stuttering problems while playing music in winamp. I remembered from my last Nforce2 mainboard that changing the WinXP HAL from 'ACPI Uniprocessor' toAdvanced Configuration and Power Interface' fixes this problem.
But when I try to do this it result in WinXP booting really slow (more than 10 minutes at least). Also a clean install of WinXP where I set the HAL manually during the installation gives the same problem after installing the nforce drivers.
    Anyone else had this problem?
    MSI Neo2 Platinum
    Amd Athlon64 3000+
    2* 512MB Corsair ValueSelect
    Leadtek GeForce 6600GT
    Seagate 120GB
    OCZ Modstream 450W
    WinXP

I also have the same problem.
I have a hardware independant image that i have built in MS VPC / MS VS05 which is then sysprep'd and captured into a WIM file.
Before i built my base image in the virtual environment, i configured all the automation files used to install windows, to include the latest Intel Matrix drivers v8.5, including the sysprep files in the base image.
I have a custom WinPE v2.1 that the machine boots of the network, and runs a vbscript in the background to partition the disks, and map drives to the network, it then extracts the WIM file to the hard disk, and copies the required drivers from the network share for the model being imaged, and then proceeds to updating the sysprep.inf.
One of the process's that is performed is checking what HAL to write into the sysprep file.
I have forced all the different types of HAL's by hard coding them in the sysprep, but after the machine reboots i get the black screen of nothing and no hard disk activity, if i reboot into safe mode it freezes on agpCPQ.sys.
I use this build process to support around 5,000 different machines at two different companies, there is proberly about 30 different models of machines that are supported by this image, (HP, Acer, Toshiba, IBM, Lenovo)and i only have the issue with the new Lenovo x301, T400 & T500.
I have spoken with Lenovo Australia, and dealt directly with the advanced system engineers and even forwarded them a copy of my image for testing, so far they have not been able to provide a solution.
They also sent me a copy of the restore disks for those models and windows xp installed without an issue, but the difference is that their image does a fully automated install where as my image is a sysprep'd image.
I checked the machines HAL type after it was imaged, and it is the same as the HAL used inside my VM Image.
