No Prefs, No Sound.  Culprit identified.  Workaround available.

Ok, so this was plaguing me.
I don't know about other machines but if you have a Mac mini and launch iChat prior to launching Garageband (GB) then you'll have no sound and no preferences in GB.
I imagine the reason for this is some cosmic collision of GB's new support for recording iChat conversations, the mac mini having no audio-in, and pure dumb luck.
So, first things, restart your Mac. Fire up GB first. Then fire up ichat. Now, you can go about as though nothing had happened. However, if you then quit GB and then launch it again, you'll be back to having no sound, no prefs. So, if you like using iChat and have a tendency to, I dunno, quit GB, then get used to restarting your Mac.
However, you can always just stop using iChat. I've switched over to Adium.
If, you'd like to do a podcast that includes audio from an iChat, though, you'll need to go through the ridiculous rigamarole detailed above.
Note: there is no need to delete Preferences or any of that jazz. This is purely a conflict between two stupid apps that I imagine many of us use frequently.
Dear Apple,
Get on this toot sweet.
Thanks,
Chris

THANK YOU!!! This was driving me nuts till I read your post. Couldn't get GarageBand to make a peep. I had iChat set to autolaunch. This fixed it perfectly.

  • Why does Panther System Prefs for Sound ouput only permits headphones?

I was OK with external speakers until I broke a wire. Now I cannot hear sounds from my internal speaker because the Sound Ouput Pane only shows headphones and not internal speakers. Version 10.3.9. The local Mac rep said there was nothing he could do because I was out of warranty and didnt have Apple Care. Thx for help.

I think if Sound Control Panel shows 'headphones' it thinks (correctly or not) that something is plugged into the headphone socket (which will disconnect/disable the internal speakers). My G5 recognises immediately I connect/disconnect anything to the external spkrs/phones socket, thus 'Internal Speaker' is only available if I've nothing in the socket.
If you've nothing connected and still no 'Internal' available then I'd think the System's got confused ? Try plugging/unplugging a jack with the Control Panel open, see if it reflects the physical change ?

  • ATV2 Sound Issues - known workaround?

    Hi there
I'm also having still some sound issues with my Apple TV 2 (using latest firmware and iTunes Release running on a Mac mini Server)
The ATV2 is connected by HDMI and Toslink to a DENON receiver. I do have a library of movies converted from DVD using Handbrake with standard Apple TV 2 preset. This was including a AAC Prologic Stereo downmix audio track and usually a AC-3 passthrough 5.1 suround audio track. Since the 4.4 updates i don't have Dolby Digital sound anymore and optical output is only working when disconnect HDMI.
With the older firmware 4.3 i did not had any problem!
I found this workaround to reenable Dolby Digital Sound output:
1.) Go to the audio track selection menue by pressing select button, switch to audio selection menue switch manually to the second audo track still having stereo downmix (should be the AC-3 track.
2.) Repeat procedure to switch back to the first audio track -> ATV switches AC-3 to HDMI output!
This works on all my handbrake coded movies including aac stereo and ac-3 5.1 audio tracks. It has to be repeated when changing movie.
This is clearly a newly introduced software bug, please fix it!
    Thanks

Well fact is, that all movies have correct sound AAC and AC-3 tracks using handbrake 0.95 standard Apple TV 2 preset. None of these movies had any issues with previous ATV2 4.3 firmware releases.
Furthermore the Issue can be corrected by simply switching audio track selector in ATV2 twice novadays!!!
While investigating the problem I had also the idea of some mistakes in the movies itself. So i used Subler and mediainfo to check the video files. Then used Quicktime, iTunes and VLC to examine content and could really not see any problem with m4v files.
VLC can correctly switch audio track because it can decode AC-3 DD 5.1 streams internally.
Quicktime locks like decoding both audio stream simultanously (has no switch to select) causes strange echo.
iTunes shows the two audio streams in menue but won't let you switch to dolby digital (greyed out) implies, that it neither can passthrough nor decode AC-3 DD 5.1 tracks.
I also saw, that with the 4.3 firmware i could have sent DD 5.1 to the optical output, even with connected HDMI cable, which is definitely not the case anymore.
    Still need to be fixed!

  • USB Sound Card won't Show in Sys. Pref. Sound Pane

Hi, This has problem has happened occurred recently. I bought a USB Sound Card and it was working fine. I also have a USB Microphone that was working fine. (I am a DJ) I have a USB MIDI Turntable also, it works. One thing I could not get to work at all; MIDI I/O to USB adapter.
Everything has been working, except the MIDI I/O to USB adapter. All of a sudden everything stopped working except my turntable. It all shows up in System Profiler, but not in the Sound Preference Pane in System Preferences. I don't know why they stop working all of a sudden.
Plus one thing that I have had problems with. MIDI I/O to USB adapter does not work with any program. I bought it, it is plug and play, and it shows up in System Profiler. But it won't show up in the Audio Midi Setup.
    Any Suggestions?

UPDATE: I got the MIDI I/O to USB adapter working. Now I just need to get the USB Microphone and USB Sound Card to work.

  • [ER] Disable ViewMenu for panelcollection, workaround available?

    Hi,
At the moment the viewmenu of panelcollection can't be disabled (see also Question about af:panelCollection
In my opinion this should be possible in the same way as "freeze", "wrap" and "detach" with the property "featuresoff".
E.g. I have a usecase where I only need the detach button for a af:table but no other features of panelcollection.
A workaround for may usecase is to implement the detach functionality without panelcollection but I don't know how to do this?
    Does anyone know this?
    regards

... work around: use instance specific skinning. The view menu is an instance of menu bar, which can be skinned
    af|menubar
In JDeveloper 11 you can create a custom skin by extending the existing. So all that needs to be added to your skin is
    af|menubar.<name styleclass added to panel collection properties>{display:none}

  • [Workaround available] Some ttc fonts not shown in Libreoffice

This is a prolonged (for more than 1 years maybe) issue for me: My LibreOffice installation does not recognize any ttc fonts. (And I cannot bear this anymore for some reason)
ttc fonts are merely a comination of two or more ttf fonts. I have installed both ttf and ttc fonts in /usr/share/fonts/TTF directory either by copying them into the directory and run `fc-cache -fv` or by installing those font packages in repositories. But LibreOffice can only recognize those ttf fonts, not ttc ones.
    * I have tried both "libreoffice-writer" and "libreoffice-fresh" packages from official repositories, with "~/.config/libreoffice" deleted.
    * I have no "~/.font*" or "~/.confg/fontconfig" directory.
    * Those ttc fonts I installed CAN be recognized in any other "Select font" dialog.
    * I tried Abiword and it CAN also recognized those ttc fonts.
    * Not a single ttc font, but all the ttc fonts cannot be recognized by LibreOffice.
    Any ideas?
    UPDATE:
I found out that some of the ttc fonts can actually be recognized by LibreOffice, others, however, can not.
    $ find /usr/share/fonts -name *.ttc

Here is all the ttc fonts I have installed. "ukai.ttc" is from ttf-arphic-ukai package, and "wqy-microhei.ttc" is from wqy-microhei package. All the others come from aur/ttf-ms-win8. I copied these fonts from a Windows 8.1 installation media and the integrity check is passed.
Only five of them (those with "YES" marks) are listed in LibreOffice. The others are not.
    I am very confused.
    UPDATE 2:
It seems that this is a prolonged bug in LibreOffice. I modified the PKGBUILD file of aur/ttf-ms-win8, spliting those ttc files into ttf files.

Yes, here is the modified part:
Nice, that's what I wrote that function for! I will update package based on your findings soon.
Wow! I love your function, too!
However, please note, that spliting those CJK fonts will result in very large package sizes. A typical Chinese ttc font is about ~35 MiB and contains 2 - 4 font weights (styles), so there will be 2 - 4 ttf files, which have a total size of ~150 MiB or more.

    254M ttf-ms-win8-zh_tw-6.3.9600.17050-1-any.pkg.tar
These are the packages my modified PKGBUILD generated. You can see how large they are compared to those ttc versions. And the only reason to split ttcs is that LibreOffice has a bug recognizing them. (Other programs recognize ttcs well)

  • Mail and Exchange many issues - Workarounds available?

After reading several posts about the incompatibilities between Exchange and Mail, and in the meantime that Snow Leopard is released, wanted to ask if there is someone else that has the same symptoms described below and how you have resolved them.
I'm using an Exchange server with Apple Mail Version 3.5 (930.3) and the only way to keep getting emails is by quitting the app and then reopening it.
1- Mail keeps synchronizing "Sent Items - Exchange account" and it takes forever to do this
2- Constantly have ghost emails (First Name, Last Name and the ghost will be Last Name, First Name) and only one of them will be readable while the other will be blank
3- [Exchange acct] Communicating with... - [Sent items] Fetching.... keeps going and is it never ends
4- Adding Messages takes forever to refresh
5- INBOX - Exchange account Updating [Evaluating] and this never moves.

  • WORKAROUND - Found a Way to Force iTunes Match to UPLOAD

I wanted to let everyone know that after months of living with incorrect matches (mainly The Beatles in Mono), I've finally found a semi-easy workaround to force uploads.  I haven't found this anywhere else, but if someone else has documented it, I apologize.  I posted this onto one of the many threads regarding the issue quite some time ago (~ 6 months), but I wanted to make sure it was seen by as many as possible. (Sorry for the long post—skip anything you're not interested in! )
    MY THEORY
The basis of this was noticing that there seemed to be discrete steps to the matching process (when adding via already-ripped FILES and not CD at least):
You add the files to iTunes
You can force a scan by right-clicking and selecting "Add to iCloud"
    iTunes scans the new files
iTunes reports that it is sending the file data to Apple
iTunes waits for a "Matched" or "No Match" response from Apple
If the response is "No Match," then iTunes triggers the upload
After observing this for some time, I concluded that if (edited) files could be imported that would give a definite "No Match" result, there may be time in-between steps 4 and 6 to replace the files with the real ones (which had been triggering a false match in the past).  To my delight, this worked.  Here's what I did:
    STEP-BY-STEP:
Deleted existing files from iTunes/iCloud, but kept the files on the computer.  I then moved these to a different folder.
Took existing files and converted them with dBpoweramp.  This will cost money but is well worth it if you are looking for a way to force an upload to iTunes Match. I converted them using the same AAC settings (this doesn't matter), but added the "reverse" DSP, which reverses the audio.  This has been enough to foil iTunes into not matching the track, while ensuring that each file will contain unique audio data.  This will be quick and painless, at least for the first time.  I did it this way because it will retain all of the tags AND length of the file.  iCloud will get the file length from this step, and will not change it afterward...so you probably want to use files of the same length as the real ones.
Now I have a copy of the files with audio gibberish but still having correct metadata, etc.  I then put these files in my "Automatically Add to iTunes" folder.
Right-clicked on these files and selected "Add to iCloud." If you use "Sort Album" like I do, you can change it before this step and it will upload into iCloud with the correct sort information.  If done afterward, it doesn't usually sort correctly on my iPhone.
After iTunes displayed the message "Sending information to Apple" (don't remember the exact message), I pasted the original (correct) files and replaced my audio gibberish files.  It is important to note that the filenames must be the same, e.g. "01 Come Together.m4a" if a single-disc, or "1-01 Back in the USSR.m4a" if multidisc.  iTunes will also truncate the file name at 36 characters (I believe) so this will all need to be done beforehand.  I use various MP3tag actions that I'd be happy to share if anyone wants them.  If you are starting with a file that has already existed in your iTunes library, this will already be done (provided iTunes is managing the library).
When Apple returns a "No Match" signal back to iTunes, it then begins to upload the files which I have just pasted.
This has worked for me 100% if doing the upload one time.  In some rare cases, I may decide to EQ a file and then re-upload, or otherwise edit the file.  Or perhaps I have more than one version (original/remastered, or original mix/remix) that I want to coexist in my library.  In those cases, I have again utilized the dBpoweramp "VST Plug-in" DSP, where I use something like Freq Show to garble the audio.  It is necessary for the garbled audio to be unique each time for this to work.
A FEW THINGS I HAVE LEARNED
If you delete a file and wish to re-upload it, you can use the same files from step 2 (provided you still have them) and iTunes will recognize them as the files previously uploaded.  I am not sure how long this works, but your uploaded music remains in iCloud, though invisible, for some time — even if you selected "Delete from iCloud."
iTunes/iCloud evidently does use metadata (at least Album) to help determine if you've already uploaded a song within the same album.  I ran into this when trying to test an EQ/level change I had made, and even though the audio content was completely different, iTunes would not upload or would flag as duplicate.  If I altered the Album field in any way it would proceed. Other tags can be kept the same.
If you do have mono content, it is trivial to use the dBpoweramp "Channel Mapper" DSP to remove one channel during the conversion from lossless to AAC.  The nice thing is, I encode with Nero AAC quality 0.65 (~250 kbps VBR) and this will reduce the file size significantly.  There is no real advantage to keeping both channels, since you're doing a lossy conversion anyway.  Sometimes the encoders (even very good ones) don't see the file as being mono, due to different artifacts and noise in the left and right channels. Or perhaps the mono tape was transfered with a stereo tape deck, etc.  Try it yourself and see if it makes a difference.  Also, iTunes will report the file as "mono" when you do "Get Info."  I keep the FLAC disc image/tracks in stereo so it will exactly match the CD, but only encode one channel to lossy.  If you know the source is mono for sure then there is no possible advantage to keeping both channels of a lossy conversion.  (If you're not sure if the source is mono, use your favorite DAW, e.g. Audacity, to invert the phase of one channel before combining left and right.  Once you do that, if all that is left is very low-level noise or other artifacts, then you know it is safe to encode as mono.)
    IF YOU CARE ABOUT MASTERING
It is also worth noting that if you care about what mastering you have in your iTunes library, there is no other way I know of to guarantee you have the correct version in your iCloud library except to upload it.  I found this out the hard way: I had a retail CD version of Paul McCartney's "RAM" album that was recently remastered.  I put the CD in, added to my library, and iTunes Match quickly returned with "Matched" for all tracks.  Some time later I was listening with headphones and noticed that some tracks had hardly any hiss at all, whereas others had a good amount of it.  Since "RAM" is a rather hissy album, I investigated it against the CD and finally found that many of the tracks were being matched to other versions of the song (either from the earlier CD version or compilations with different mastering).  So most of the tracks were hit with heavy noise reduction for the iCloud version.  I had to follow this upload procedure to be sure that I got the right version.  Purchasing the item(s) from the iTunes store would work also, but I had already paid $100 for the deluxe box set.  This same problem occured with the Bob Dylan mono box.  I was surprised to find that iTunes actually matched my mono versions to mono versions, and continued listening until one day the stereo version played on a certain track instead of the mono.  So, even if the iTunes store has the mix/mastering that you are wanting to add to iCloud, the only sure way is to upload it (or purchase it from iTunes in the first place.)  If given the choice going forward I would choose the latter, since I am not hung up on physical media and cannot tell a 256K iTunes store encode apart from a FLAC file in a double blind test (almost nobody can).
This has been bothering me for months.  I'm really happy to be able to play my correct files on all my devices!  For those of us who have unique versions or masterings of albums we prefer, this should be a workaround until Apple decides to give us a "force upload" option.  I have tested this on Windows 7 primarily.  Should work on any OS.
    Hope everyone finds this useful!
    Nick

I wanted to first thank you for this, as this is the only workaround literature that seems to be floating around out there.  With that said, I know it is a big ask, but is there any way that you could create a video showing step by step how to do what you do?  I have several tracks that are stuck in waiting mode, and if left in itunes, will never upload or match...they only cause the upload process to hang up and restart.  I've tried leaving it for days...I've tried converting the files, signing in and out of itunes (and itunes match), updating itunes match, and I tried your technique...unfortunately to no avail.  Perhaps I didn't do your technique correctly.  I used audacity to reverse the audio.
ANY help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!
    Thanks

  • Nexus1000V- Problems with CSCtl70759 workaround

    Hello,
like some other people we hit also the bug CSCtl70759:
Addition of new NIC to port-channel fails if profile has queueing policy
Symptom: Addition of NIC(s) to port-channel fails if the VEM is added first time to VSM or NIC(s) are added first time to VSM one at a time. Error similar to the following can be seen: %ETHPORT-5-IF_DOWN_PORT_PROFILE_INHERIT_ERR: Interface Ethernet1/2 is down (port-profile inherit error)
Conditions: Failure is seen only when the NIC which was previously not added to VSM by any other port-profile and is added to port-channel port-profile for the first time or multiple NICs are added the first time to VSM one at a time.
    There are two workaround available:
    1. Remove the queuing policy from the port-profile and add the NIC to the port-channel. Once port joins the bundle, put back queuing policy. Subsequent NIC removal/addition to profile will work fine.
    2. Or, bring the NIC up using any other port-profile and then move it to intended port-profile having queuing policy.
We prefer to use option-2, because we want to avoid to make changes at the primary uplink-port-profile what is used by all hosts. When something would go wrong during the change of this profile, our complete vmware environment would be down.
But option-2 doesn't work in our environment. We did the steps described in the workaround:
    1. created a new profile without any queing:
         port-profile type ethernet Uplink-Test
      vmware port-group
      switchport mode access
      switchport access vlan 100
      no shutdown
      state enabled
    2. Then we moved the failed vmnic11 to this new profile. And we see this error:
    2012 Jan 16 12:52:35 BYNX04 %VIM-5-IF_DETACHED: Interface Ethernet5/12 is detached
    2012 Jan 16 12:52:35 BYNX04 %VIM-5-IF_ATTACHED: Interface Ethernet5/12 is attached to vmnic11 on module 5
2012 Jan 16 12:52:36 BYNX04 %IPQOSMGR-SLOT5-3-QOSMGR_DPA_MSG: DPA returned error message - QoS Agent: Only one queuing policy instance (per VEM) is sup ported
    2012 Jan 16 12:52:36 BYNX04 %PORT-PROFILE-2-INTERFACE_QUARANTINED: Interface Ethernet5/12 has been quarantined due to Cmd Failure 2012 Jan 16 12:52:37 BYNX04 %ETHPORT-5-IF_DOWN_INACTIVE: Interface Ethernet5/12 is down (Inactive)
Whyever, it seems the vsm thinks that more than one queing policy instance is configured at this VEM.
Our used software version: VSM: 4.2(1)SV1(4a)
    ESXi: VMware ESXi 5.0.0 Releasebuild-504890
    Regards Hendrik

    Hendrik,
    - How many total pnic uplinks does VEM 5 have connected and do they all connected to the same uplinks PP?
    - Can you verify there's no sub interface config "show run int eth5/1-x" where x is the highest pnic #.
    - If you have other uplink port profiles for VEM 5, are any of them configured with a QoS policy?

  • Amarok 2.5.0-1 - no sound

Updated to Amarok 2.5.0-1 and now there is no sound, although the track appears to 'progress' normally.
Going to Settings->Configure Amarok->Playback->configure Phonon I was able to select the preferred audio device and got sound when pressing the 'Test' button. Still no sound when playing a (ogg) file though.
Downgraded back to Amarok 2.4.3-3 and all is well again.
    Anyone else seeing this?

    @Chembro
Thanks for the update regarding the 'death' of the Xine backend
The Amarok 2.5.0-1 has fixed a really annoying problem I was having. Every time the previous amarok started, it sat the system at >60% load until you opened the Amarok window, then all was well. I did try to diagnose things, I got a 'flood' of X errors when running 'amarok' from a console (no debug flag needed). These ceased as soon as you opened the Amarok window. I  worked round it by remembering to open Amarok every time I started the system.
Still one 'cosmetic' glitch left: if you use the 'Now Playing' KDE widget, Amarok 'forgets' to update the artwork on the first track, when playing an album. When track 2 starts, the artwork changes. Until then you either get a 'blank' or whatever the previous album was.
The above I can live with, I still prefer Amarok to the other players available for Linux by a long way.

  • USB Sound In (via Altec Lansing skype-type headset

Hi, trying to use the mic on this headset to record through to my Flat Panel iMac via its USB jack (on the keyboard).
I know it's connecting because the device shows up fine in the Sound Pref and Sound-Out lets me monitor audio but despite selecting the same device in Sound-In there's no functionality.
The headset is identified in Sound as C-Media USB Headphone set.
Varying Input Volume has no affect. Since I've never used it I can't be sure the mic actually works but it's new out of the box.
    Any ideas? Thanks - Tom

  • No sound in Virtual machine of Macbook after 10.5.1 update

    Hi
I am using new macbook (C2D 2.2 GHz, 4G ram, 160 HDD, X3100 video) with Leopard.
When I installed virtual machine "VMware Fusion" to use boot camp windows partition, I could use boot camp windows as a full window(boot camp) and virtual machine(VMware Fusion's bootcamp partition use) fully.
However, after installing Leopard 10.5.1 update, I can't hear any sound from my virtual machine.
VMware Fusion is showing "Sound will not be available" !!!
So, I installed windows XP in virtual machine's image(not bootcamp).
    BU, still no sound.
I think 10.5.1 update interfere virtual machine's sound driver or related driver.
    Anyboy know this situation?

    Peggy,
I didn't repair the permissions until I experienced the problems with Pages after the initial installation. After I did this, things worked fine. Like I said, after updating to 10.5.1 yesterday, the problem returned and after repairing permissions didn't get things back to normal, I reinstalled iWork '08.
Here's something odd. Even though I trashed the entire iWork '08, when I reinstalled, the installer told me that zero space was required to install iWork '08. So maybe there's some other disk issue involved?
The Repair Disk option is grayed out in Disk Utilities. There's an instruction to run the reapir application from a CD or DVD, but Leopard only has one installation disk and it doesn't have any independently running repair program on it.

    stuck in iraq1

I did try the PRAM reset several times but it appeared not to be working as when I went into info about my Mac it showed me 0 under Audio built in. I reinstalled the software update Mac os x 10.6.8 V1.1 from the apple site 2 days ago. Everything that was using audio had seemed to crash or not work all audio files, skype and itunes. When I switched on my bluetooth it would pick up my friend's pc and it would show the volume control was un muted and still no sound, I turned off the bluetooth and it would go back to being muted. I gave up and this morning miraculously it started up with sound as soon as I switched it on and everything seems to be working.
Thanks for the help and feed back
