No preview image in finder window

After upgrading from Jaguar to Tiger, photo preview images from Adobe Photo Deluxe (system 9) do not appear. Instead file info is displayed. How can I fix this? This feature worked fine in Jaguar.

I,m not sure why that feature would not work in Panther and not Tiger. Since this is is specific to older Abobe software you may want to check on the adobe forums.

  • Cannot see Raw Nikon NEF images in finder windows

I had a problem with my Macbook pro so I had to re-install the operating system, which is Leopard.
Now I can't see the my Nikon NEF images in the finder windows, they only show the jpeg pictures.
I remember this was a problem over a year ago and somehow I resolved it, but I can 't remember how. I'm doing the usual thing such as click VIEW - OPTIONS - ALWAYS OPEN IN ICON VIEW - but this does not seem to work.
Can anyone remind me what to do?

The issue should only occur if you shoot raw. Currently OS X can only display/read certain RAW camera formats. These are OS level, meaning iPhoto, Preview, Mail, Aperture and others are effected. However adobe products are different because they use Adobe Camera RAW.
I would expect JPEGs TIFFs and PSDs, both thumbnails and files, to view fine. RAW files will not view from the D300, but the D200 is supported.
There is no way of knowing when support for the (not-so-)new files will be available. Rumor has it it will be 10.5.2, but only Apple knows that. You can head on over to the Aperture forum and read to see if some have work-arounds.

  • Lost HD image in Finder window

I've lost a the image of my Hard Drive in the upper left hand corner of my finder window and don't know how to get it back. I must have inadvertantly made it go poof one day. It does show up when I open Disk Utility, but I can't figure out what to do from there, if anything, and I'm afraid to do anything else from fear of erasing or restoring something I don't want to.
    What's the trick? TIA
    Michael

    Hi Micheal,
    Try this...
    Finder>Preferences>Sidebar, clck on Hard Disks.
If that fails, simply drag the Desktop icon for the HD to the sidebar.
PS. It's easy to drag those icons off to the left and have them go poof!

  • Preview images in Finder (default opened by Preview) gone

Since a couple of days the preview of images default opened by Preview are gone.
Preview of files/images that are default opened by other programs are still there.
I tried one of the answers in the (unanswered) topics where it was suggested to delete the com.apple.finder.plist file, but this doesn't help.
I think this change has occurred after I installed the "Panorama maker 4" program that came with a Nikon Coolpix camera. This program can "stitch" together a number of panoramically made shots, so it is made to meddle with JPEG files. Also the installation procedure is very un-Apple-like and un-OS X-like.
Of course removing this program does not help.
Any suggestions on what might be wrong, or how to recreate the preview?

You should be able to restore Preview as being the default to open JPG files by opening Finder then choosing a folder with JPG files in it. Select one of them and right click (Option + Click) and select "Open With" then select "Other". Navigate to the Preview Application and select it (click once), then click on the "Always Open With" checkbox (lower left of the dialog box) then click on the Open button.

  • Wrong preview icon and image in finder

I recently upgraded my computer - now running snow leopard 10.6.8. I have noticed that when I save files in certain applications (eg. ai CS5 files)  the preview icon in finder windows is not of the application but just a blank page icon instead. Also on the desktop it's just a blank doc page not the ai. icon.
I have managed to manually alter a few files by clicking and dragging the ai. icon in the Get Info window from the bar to the ai. icon beneath and the application icon does remain then but each new file has the same problem - I don't want to keep altering them manually for every file.
A second, related (I suppose) problem is that the actual preview image in the finder window is wrong - not the last saved image (or even a previously saved image) but a combination of several turned off layers in the case of ai. files. The preview image is wrong also if opening direct from illustrator CS5.
    Thanks for any ideas.

Yes this is one of those commands that takes off on it's own.  That is why I specified to let it run it coarse and will put you back out at the prompt when complete.  Sounds like you did it correctly.
I would advise booting off install DVD and run both Repair Disk and Repair Permissions.

If you ran the delta update through the Software updater,  I would reinstall the 10.6.8 combo on top of what you have.  Many curious anomaly can be straightened out with this:  http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Still repair permissions before and after Combo-Update.

  • Preview images slow to load in Finder

I've just upgraded from 10.2.8 to 10.4.6 and I'm having a bothersome issue with the preview images in Finder loading very slowly. This is most noticable with large high res Photoshop files. Why is this happening and is there a fix?
Thanks in advance for any and all help.

I'm having similar issues, but with almost all previews. It's made using the finder almost impossible lately. It seems to work just snappy if I change the view to icon or list before I click on an files, but I really got used to working in the column view. I'm searching the forums now for more info.

  • Finder window on Mac won't scroll horizontally in Muse

I noticed that anytime I open a finder window through Muse (i.e. replace image), the finder window's scroll bar only scrolls so far.   I have to resize the window to view other columns.   This appears to be a new bug, as it was working normally in the release prior.  Anyone else seeing this?

I don't use Muse. It works for me in Illustrator Creative Cloud.
I am attaching my before and after screenshots so you can see how the preview changed.
Not sure what you mean by "which scaling is used".
Before: You can see that the file preview is stuck. I can't scroll horizontally to see any more of the preview.
After: The file preview icon is resized after clicking and dragging on the column divider while holding down the alt key.

  • How do I make image icons in finder window previews of the image?

The image icons in my finder window are just generic jpeg icons (they are set to open automatically in Preview). How do I make them previews of the images themselves? When I "get info" on the icon, there is a very nice preview of the image - I would like to see the same quality preview in the icons themselves.
Thank you very much for your help.

    Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hi Sam,
From your Finder "View" menu (without a Finder window open) >> "Show view options" >> do you have "show icon preview" check marked? And with the Finder window open "show icons" and "show preview icons" checkmarked?
EDIT: I may have misunderstood your question. If you're talking about the small file icons, not in the preview frame if you have PhotoShop it should do it with a save as PS file. Otherwise you may be able to paste the image but I'm not sure.

  • Can Finder windows Always preview images? Can the Preview size be changed?

I would like to have my Finder windows always open so that when viewing a list of images and clicking on one, the preview is displayed as if the arrow has been clicked to open the preview.
    How is that controlled?
Also, I was wondering if that preview size can change. I thought that if I increases the size of that 'cell' in the wondow that the preview would grow but that's not the case. Can I change the preview size?

It's not altogether clear to me exactly what you want, but if you open a folder of images and put the window into column view, you can drag the last preview column until it displays the maximum size preview of 255 pixels in width or height. However, not all thumbs are created equal, and not all will display at that maximum size, some are limited to the usual icon maximum of 128 pixels. Thus the jpegs I download from my camera will have a max of 128, but if I have opened and saved the image as a Photoshop file the max will be 255. Screenshots in png format also have the 255 maximum. Large jpegs I download (which do not have a custom thumb) will also display at the 255 max in Column view. Just depends on the file.

  • Thumbnail images for file icons in finder windows

Is there are way to automatically create thumbnails for images imported into iPhoto that will also appear in finder windows? When I save images in Photoshop, a thumbnail of the image is created and appears as the icon image of the file. However, when I import images from my camera or another storage device into iPhoto, only the generic JPEG icon appears in the finder window.
Is there a shortcut to create thumbnails of image files that will appear in finder windows? Is there a way to batch create these thubmnails?

In any Finder window go View Menu -> Show View Options -> Show Icon Preview.
Are you using this to try and find pics in the Finder? If so, it might help to know that there are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size.
    3. Show File: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Preview Image icon in Finder

    Hi everyone!
I couldnt exactly find a help topic for this...
I just want to know why the image icon in the finder windows doesnt change when you alter the image in preview? Say I cropped an image in preview or rotated it, the preview icon of the image in finder is the original but when you click to open it, its the altered image.
Should I have clicked on something in the preferences? Or is it really like that.
Because in my desktop, the image does change when it got restarted but not in the finder window.
    Any reply would be appreciated....thanks!

I have the same problem. I edit my pictures with HP Photosmart Studio. I might crop it, rotate or change it to black and white but the icon will stay the same. When I open it in Preview it is fine. I also have Windows XP installed through parallels, the strange thing is when I go to XP windows explorer it shows the correct Icon and correct image for the picture.
It really buggin me please help.
Also when I try to upload a picture I can not switch it to thumbnail like in Windows to see the picture I am attaching. Any ideas???

  • Icon preview in finder window

How do I get a thumbnail preview to show up as the icon when looking at a file list in a finder window?
I can't find any pref settings to that effect.
    Thanks.

    rileyman...
I was thinking along that line but the confusing part was putting it all into words. But the unfortunate thing there has to be some stripped data for it not to be seen there properly. Perhaps EXIF data, of which stands for Exchangeable Image File Format, that I am a bit clueless on any fixes. What I do know is that Preview.app is the worse for stripping that out on an export. Then the preview icon gets tagged into the picture rather than seeing the true picture from within the "Finder Preview Window"
What I do is to coral them up into single folder for opening within another application. iPhoto is ok at times, but I have more luck with Photoshop - Elements.
If you are photo application deprived, check over any camera, printer or scanner software that you have that may contain some freebies. Or feel free to see this website. There is a few image browsers there.

  • Preview 4.1 - "open all images in one window"

    Dear users,
Despite checking this button in Preferences, Preview often (not always) will open my images in different windows, as opposed to in one window with a thumbnail pane. This is especially true across file formats. Am I doing something wrong? THANKS!!

First, put enough images into /Users/Shared to test. Then, create a new account, name it "test" and see how your Preview app works in that User acct? (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.) This account is just for test, do nothing further with it.
Open System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" make it an admin account.
If the problem is present in the test account also, then it is systemwide. In this case try repairing this with the 10.5.4 Combo Update . This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.
If the problem does not appear in the test account try starting in "Safe Mode" (It will take a bit more time to startup because it runs a directory check first).
If that works go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login Items and remove them. Boot normally and test. If there are still problems, go to ~(yourHome)/Library/Contextual Menu Items and move whatever is there to the desktop. Then do the same with /Library/Contextual Menu Items. Lastly, try moving /Users/Home)/Library/Fonts to your desktop and restarting.
Log out/in or restart, if that sorts it start putting items back one at a time until you find the culprit.
    Let us know.

  • Trouble using Finder window to look at image/movie files

I know I'm doing something wrong...
I'm using the Finder to look at image and movie files
If the files sit in a folder that is a few layers deep, then it's really frustrating to look at
The space for the icons are all small
I have to maxmise just to look at properly
    It's super frustrating
    Am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks
    Omar

    Hey Omar,
I was able to find a couple of tips that should make your Finder experience better. First off, I'd check out the following article that goes over the different viewing options in Finder:
OS X Lion: Choose options for viewing items in Finder windows
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH3919
If you're having trouble seeing the details of the icon because they're too small, choose View > Show View Options, and then try adjusting the sliders for "icon size." You might also want to try using the Cover Flow view option. With it you can easily see live previews of images, documents and movies, and can thumb through them quickly.
I'd also look over the general Finder article that goes over some tips for usage:
    Mac Basics: The Finder

    Cheers,
    David

  • How to refresh image preview icons in Finder?

I often browse through my photos directly in Finder. Many of my photos have been rotated from landscape to portrait format using Preview, but the preview icons I see in my Finder window remain in landscape format. How do I refresh the icons to make them reflect the new, modified image?
    Thanks.

Hi Saigon Cinnamon, and a warm welcome to the forums!
I'm not 100% positive, but I think the problem is that Preview & iPhoto only "tag" them as rotated & doesn't actually rotate them.
I think Finder in 10.5 or 10.6 understand & respects that tag, but not in Tiger.
I'd try really rotating one & re-saving it in say GraphicConverter...
