No preview on jpegs

We've just bought a MacBook Pro with Retina Screen and basically when I transfer my jpegs (sports photos) to another iMac there is no picture display on the jpeg, just the jpeg number, which is a bit annoying as I don't know the jpegs by their numbers. Any ideas, all the previews seem to be ticked. Appreciate any help.

I don't have that drive, so I can only speak generally. I think that's a USB2 drive. Barring an actually defective drive, it may be PC formatted. Ordinarily, that in itself doesn't seem to cause me any problems, but I would use Apple Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) and reformat the drive as a Mac OSX extended - journaled volume, then try again. I've seen some instances where PC formatted drives cause Mac problems.
Disk Utility can also do some basic function tests of the drive.

  • Preview opens jpegs as blank?

    Preview opens jpegs as black windows (previously worked fine)
    All software up-to-date
    tried a couple of the fixes shown in earlier discussions including:
    "Solution was to quit preview and go to user>library>preferences and delete the 3 preview .plist files (com.apple.Preview.bookmarks.plist etc) and voila!"
    but unfortunately didn't work..
    Can anyone help?

    Yours is not a common complaint.
    Standard debugging procedure would be to use Safe Mode (only essential Apple extensions loaded) to see if the problem occurs there. If no problems in Safe Mode, the trouble may lie in your extensions.
    Next on the list is to log in with a different account. If you don't have one, create one, don't use the default Guest account.
    Next on the list would be a re-install over the existing. This is intended to erase nothing, just replace anything damaged or missing.
    Next is to re-install onto a blank drive ( either a new drive or make TWO sets of Backups and wipe the drive and install from scratch, then restore the rest). [ I recommend the new drive, they are cheap and the process is easier.] Then when adding back extensions, do so one or two at a time, and watch carefully to see if symptoms change.

  • Preview and jpegs

    Since I updated my wife's Macbook to Snow Leopard, Preview will not open jpegs. She gets a blank window. I have Snow Leopard on my Macbook Pro and I can open the same jpegs with no problems.
    I ran the Disk Repair utility on her machine and got error messages saying System/Library/Core and System/Library/Private had been changed and will not be repaired.
    Any suggestions?

    I have the same problem all the sudden, just a blank window when opening any file in Preview (jpg, pdf, doc....). I have tried to login to my gf's account and the problem persists. So I think it's a system folder problem. Had just done the Repair Permission but still couldn't see any image in the Preview. Also tried to boot in safe mode but Preview was still not working...
    Have also been searching for a while but couldn't find answer yet. Please could someone give me a hand to solve this problem.
    Cheers

  • Quick preview of jpeg using subsample

    Hey,
    Consider that you have a folder with many "medium sized" JPEGs, let's say: 2MB, 500KB, or so...
    You want to explore that folder, without loading all files into memory, but in the same time you want to see a small preview of each image file (just like windows thumbnails).
    Loading every single jpeg will cost you a lot of memory... so here comes SourceSubsampling.
    I use following lines for reading jpegs:
    public Image CreateImageFromFile(File file) throws InterruptedException, IOException {
            ImageReader reader= (ImageReader)(ImageIO.getImageReadersByFormatName("jpeg").next());
            ImageReadParam param = reader.getDefaultReadParam();
            ImageInputStream iis = ImageIO.createImageInputStream(file);
            reader.setInput(iis,true);
            param.setSourceSubsampling(16,16, 0, 0);
            Image img=null;
            try {
                 img = reader.read(0,param);
            } catch (Exception e) {System.out.println("Error read");
            return img;
        }Before using this method... I have used a simpler way:
    FileInputStream FI=new FileInputStream(file);
    IMAGE_Cobai=Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().createImage(FI);
    The first issue was... Loading TIME. I got 500 ms for a 2.5MB. It is acceptable for a single file, but for 10 or 100?!
    The second issue was MEMORY. BufferedImage ate a lot of memory, sometimes I got some errors for exceeding max memory allocated for JVM (80MB or?!)
    I solved the second, using first method (subsampling).
    I wonder why the LOADING TIME is the same?
    Is there any way to speed it up?* I thought that using setSourceSubsampling will force reader to simply ignore most of pixels and maybe read only one pixel for every 16x16 block.
    It should be possible because comercial products like ACDSEE use these tricks for preview. Strange thing is I didn't find any library for java...
    If you have some answers... pls write them here. I googled a lot... last 2-3 weeks.
    Thx.

    I posted a reply here that might help - see the post on 2008-06-06:

  • Show preview/filial JPEG file

    one more :-)
    I know, I can import images with the JPEGs handled as seperate images. But this is not what I usually want. I would however like, to see the original image produced by the camera. At least a command to add the JPEG file into the stack and remove it as "filial file" so one could see and work with it.
    It makes sens for me to see the original JPEG as reality link when working with images. Current cameras also produces quite acceptable images from the start, so it is a bit of a loss to just hide them.

    Might try this ueli...
    Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, try trashing this file...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Preview.plist
    Reboot. Set up Preview Prefs again.

  • Mail doesn' t show preview of jpeg's

    I have noticed that Apple Mail doesn't always show a preview of pictures (gif's and jpeg's) in the preview window. Sometimes it shows a picture and sometimes there is only a "?" in a frame and I have to double click on the attached icon to see it... Does anybody know why?

    I apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact nature of the issue you are describing. If you mean that you are not seeing the first couple of lines of the email in the message list, you may want to check the "List Preview" setting in the Viewing preferences, as noted in the following article:

  • Cant open pdf foiles in preview or jpegs now

    I have suddenly been unable to open files in preview. They come up as not able to read in applications. Dont understand. can open photoshop files in photoshop but nothing else in pdf. HELP

    Drag and drop it onto Preview's icon, or select the file, *Get Info* on it, and in the *Open With...* menu in the Get Info window, select Preview.
    A PDF file that won't open in Preview is an Acrobat-only file, and there's nothing you can do about that.

  • No JPEG previews - iCloud Drive on the Web

    Hi,
    Due to spending most time in the office I need to use iCloud in the web browser. I bet, I'm not alone.
    I do not see any reason NOT to show image thumbnail previews for JPEG images in iCloud Drive on the Web.
    Anybody else have this issue? Any tips/solutions? Would you like to see thubmnails yourself?
    Thanks for your comments,

    That's not true. You can easily drag files to the web version of iCloud Drive. But when I try to drag a folder, it tells me I need to compress it first before uploading.  The point of iCloud Drive is that you can access it via iCloud.com anywhere and upload folders and files. I just can't seem to upload folders. Uploading files works fine.
    Does anyone have a fix?

  • How to export 'CMYK/Overprint Preview' document to jpeg/pdf?

    Hi all,
    Is there any way to export the overprint preview as jpeg/pdf ?
    Thanks.

    Appreciate ur help....
    Actually What I want to do is that there is my original document containing some arts or objects like as follows:
    Currently doc is set to CMYK/Preview. Now I clicked the menu item Window>Separations Preview where i checked the Overprint preview, this will set my document CMYK/Overprint Preview and I unchecked Cyan, Yellow and Black from separation preview dialog which gave me result like this :
    I am trying to export the above overprint preview but every time I got the original one.
    I am using AIRasterize suite to get the current state of the document and export it but didnt find any luck. I am also trying to do it on illustrator but I am not able to do i.
    So I am just curious can it be doable or not?
    Thanks.

  • How can I use my previews as "masters", wen the masters are irretrievably lost? My idea is to at least be able to save the lost pictures by using the Previews as the new "originals".

    So, yes. Most of my master pictures are gone, long story - please don't ask why. The question now is whether I can use the previews (which are still there) which is surely better than nothing. But except for browsing, there's nothing I can do with them, unless they have a master file connencted. Has anyone got a clue how I could make Aperture treat these remaining preview as master files as well as previews, or in some way make this files useable.
    Thank you very much for your help, if anybody out there has a clue how

    So, yes. Most of my master pictures are gone, long story - please don't ask why.
    I assume, your library is referenced? And the versions are now pointing to missing original master image files?
    Then try the following - for each project separately.:
    Select all images in a  project and drag them from the Bowser to a folder outside the library. This will export the previews as jpegs.
    Now - with the images in the project still selected - use the command "File > Locate Referenced Files" to open the "reconnect" window. In the upper part of the reconnect Window select the first of your images that needs to be reconnected, and in the lower part point it to the corresponding  jpeg you exported. Hold down the alt/options-key⌥ to force the connect-buttons to appear. Press "Connect all".
    Regards
    Léonie
    P.S: If the reconnect buttons refuse to become active, even with the⌥-key held down, check the filenames. The previews should be named exactly like the missing originals. I tried this in Aperture 3.4.5, but I am not sure, if it will work in all Aperture versions the same.

  • Building animation previews for Presets

    There's a helpful preview animated GIF that shows up in Bridge when I select a preset that shipped with AE. How can I build my own preview animation for 3rd party and custom made presets?

    You render an animated GIF(for animated previews) or JPEG (for static previews) and fuse it together using the undocumented app.previewInject() command. There used to float around a script by Ko Maruyama that provides this functionality for everyone to use. I'm sure asking the mighty Google will turn it up.

  • Bridge CS5 showing 16 bit previews

    Hello
    I have written about this before and have never had a good answer.
    I see that the latest version of Bridge CS5 64 bit Windows seems to show 16 bit previews. The previews are posterised.
    I have a ATI HD5400 with the latest drivers running on Win 7 64 bit. Win display properties shows 32 bit display at 1920 by 1200 on my Eizo SX2462W monitor.
    If I open a previewed image in Camera Raw, I see a initially a posterised image which then redraws to un posterised.
    Bridge slide shows also show posterised images and do not have the sharpening applied in CR.
    I have purged all my caches and also have selected 100% previews and monitor sized previews.
    The Loupe shows the posterisation.
    Photoshop CS5 shows unposterised images.
    Mike Engles

    The Bridge previews are jpegs and I have a feeling that there is a problem with Bridge which is I think still 32 bit in CS5. working on a 64 bit OS.
    Bridge CS6 (in fact Bridge version 5) is the first version that appeared in 64 bit. But I don't see the difference of 64 and 32 bit for the system effecting your previews.
    The specs of your graphic card show that this card should not cause a problem.
    To clarify, (no relevant knowledge of Windows on my side I'm afraid) you have multiple disks on your system or do you have a partition on the same disk for both XP and Windows 7?
    And are you using two different libraries (read: two different cache folders for Bridge, one for XP and one for Windows 7) or do you use the same cache folder for both.
    The latter might cause you problems. About each new version of Bridge has a different cache structure and they are not easy interchangeable (if at all). And I think both OS have different approach of cache but I'm not sure about that.
    When stating that the problem solves with purge cache on one system and same solution brought it back on the other I think here is the culprit. To me this indicates to a cache problem.
    Hence my suggestion of quitting Bridge and manual deleting the total cache folder (on a Mac this is in the user library) and  after restarting Bridge it will refresh with a new and empty cache folder for a fresh start.

  • How to enable TIF file preview?

    Hi
    I want to see Tif files preview like Jpeg files in my doc.
    How I can do that?
    Thanks

    Hi Entezari,
    Thanks for posting your query, If you use a picture library or asset library instead of a document library for your tiff's SharePoint will automatically generate a preview image for your tiff. Then you will be able to click on the enlarged versions of the tiff
    directly in the browser. You can also upload the dwg files in a picture library or asset library.
    Also, browse below mentioned URLs for more details on this

  • JPEG import fail?

    Scanned two photos to Tiff files, worked on them in PSE 8, and then also saved as JPEGs via Preview. This on a Snow Leopard 10.6.5 disk. Imported the folder with the four into iPhoto 6 on the SL drive.
    The Tiff files are fine, but the Preview created JPEGs show up in iPhoto as black rectangles. Click on one to edit and you see a high contrast dim photo.
    The original scans were to black and white.
    Took the same folder over to my Tiger Disk and they imported and show up just fine in iPhoto 6 there.
    Was it the HP scan to B&W. PSE 8 cleanup? Or Preview save as?

    LN
    Thank you.
    I had run into this problem once before some time ago and couldn't remember what or why. This may have been the first time I scanned a photo directly to a B&W (Grayscale) TIFF. Removes too many options working in PSE.
    I'm curious because the JPEGs worked in iPhoto 6 on my Tiger drive (same photo files) but not on iPhoto 6 on the Snow Leopard drive (upgraded from Tiger maintaining apps and files).
    Here's the chain. Photo HP scanned to Gray scale TIFF on SL drive. File edited in PSE 8 on SL and saved as as two different PSE TIF files. TIF files saved as JPEGs in SL Preview. Four files imported in iPhoto 6 SL.
    Again, I buy your explanation, just curious about difference between iPhoto 6 on Tiger and SL, working with the same exact files.

  • Preview in folder

    hi
    i have window 7  and photoshop cs2
    when i am inside a folder, and have the view to thumbnail
    i cant see a preview of psd files.  i can only see preview of jpegs
    anyway of seeing the psd files as well
    thanks in advance

    The XMP thumbnail is probably what is getting used in this case.  Even for images saved without Maximize Compatibility, the Ardfry PSD Codec can use the image in the XMP for the thumbnail if it's present.  Recent versions of Photoshop allow you to choose whether to save a thumbnail image independently of whether or not Maximize Compatibility is set.
    However, larger thumbnails and viewing a large image in the preview pane (as well as Windows Photo Viewer and Windows Media Center) are dependent on having the flattened image available.  The same behavior is found with Preview on the Mac.
    If any bit of your workflow is non-Adobe, then setting Maximize Compatibility is probably a good idea.
