No preview, thumbnails, or search in Windows Explorer 64 bit Vista

No preview in Windows Explorer for 64-bit Vista... is this supposed to be fixed in 8.1.2? Also, can't perform Windows Searches against the contents of PDF files, and the majority of PDF thumbnails are not showing up in Explorer. Not interested in using Tim Heuer/Foxit because it crashes frequently and doesn't deal with searches or thumbnails.
I assume all these problems are related to 64-bit--when can we expect a fix?

There is no fix - the pdfshell driver doesn't support x64 Windows.

  • How Do I Preview QT Mpeg4 Video in Windows Explorer?

I have tried everything I can to try to get QuickTime videos to be viewed at thumbnails in Windows Explorer, but only Windows AVI and DIVX videos will be previewed as thumbnails.
    I tried these things:
    1. Installed QuickTime 7.6.2.14.0 updated this week
    2. Installed the K-Lite Codec Pack Basic
and selected to enable thumbnail previews for all video types
    http://www.codecguide.com/about_kl.htm
    3. Searched the web for ideas.
    I even tried this command: regsvr32 shmedia.dll
    http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/03/17/how-to-enable-or-disable-media-and-vide o-thumbnail-preview-in-windows-xp/
    http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/03/17/how-to-turn-off-image-preview-thumbnail -and-disable-windows-picture-and-fax-viewer-in-windows-xp/
    4. Tried rebooting several times.
    5. Looked through ''Folder Options'' and reset to defaults.
    6. I tried installing this freeware that enables FLV (flash) videos to be previewed in Windows Explorer hoping it would "kick start" whatever the problem is.
    http://www.swf-kit.com/swfpreview.html
    7. I tried looking for "Web View" under Folder Options to enable it, but
it is nowhere to be found under Windows XP SP3.
    8. I tried re-saving the MPEG4 (mp4 extension) as a QuickTime Movie and then exporting the video "for the web" in the three ipod/iphone/Desktop formats and that did not work either. They do not get previewed under Thumbnail view.
I am at a loss what else to try.
    Thanks for any suggestion.

Here is how I resolved this problem and now ALL video files show thumbnail previews inside Windows Explorer.
    1. I uninstalled K-Lite Codec Pack
    2. I rebooted Windows XP (SP3)
    3. I installed the XVID codec version 1.2.1 from http://www.koepi.info/xvid.html
    4. I rebooted Windows XP
    5. I installed the K-Lite codec pack (basic edition)
    6. Since I already had XVID and DIVX (from Divx.com) installed,
I unchecked XVID and DIVX under the DirectShow Video Decoding Filters.
    7. I activated H264 and chose "ffdshow" instead of "(use system default)"
    8. I created file associations for use with Windows Media Player, allowing the defaults to be selected automatically.
    9. I left QuickTime (mov) unchecked for the file associations.
    10. I turned on thumbnail generation for all file types.
I finished installing K-Lite Basic and then rebooted Windows XP.
When I opened "My Videos" Folder I saw video thumbnails of all my Mpeg4 QuickTime movies.

  • Photoshop CS2 thumbnails not visible in Windows Explorer

I have Photoshop CS2 running on XP Pro, and all of the thumbnail images for my PSD files show up as black squares in Windows Explorer.  The files I created in PS6 still show their thumbnail images, but once I load them into CS2 and save them, they're gone.  Any ideas as to what's causing this?

There was a DLL called psicon.dll provided with early versions of Photoshop that made .psd thumbnails visible in the 32 bit Windows Explorer.  I don't know whether later versions of .psd files might be incompatible.
For modern systems, especially 64 bit systems, there is no Adobe-supplied icon shell extension - one has to go to commercial (but inexpensive) software from one of a couple of companies out there who provide the proper codec:
    Mystic Thumbs:    http://mysticcoder.net/mysticthumbs.html
    Ardfry PSD Codec:  http://www.ardfry.com/psd-codec/
Of course, if you investigate these double check to be sure the software will work on your system.
Before paying for anything you might also check to see if you have the Maximize Compatibility setting checked in Edit - Preferences - File Handling.
    Hope this helps.

  • Search using Windows explorer

Searching works using the default browser search page, but
does not work when I user the Windows explorer interface?

Have you cheeked the permissions? On my machine Windows explorer
uses the system account. Its possible that the web interface is
using different account with more rights.
Right click on the o: and choose user profile. This will show
you which account explorer is using.
Then login with the same account in the browser and see if there
    are still differences.

  • Searching in Windows Explorer - Help!

Hello everyone! I'm hoping someone can help me. I have made a bunch of pdf files searchable and then when I am in windows explorer and i click on search it only searches the content of the doc files. how do I get it to search the pdf files content also? Thank you for your help!

The best method is to open Acrobat and go to Edit>Search (shift-ctrl-F). Select the desired folder and complete the rest of the form. This will search all PDF files.
The alternative is to use the DOS command line tool find or findstr. If you use Win 7 and index your files (I try not to index because of speed and space), you can go to the Start>Control Panel>Indexing Options>Advanced>File Types and select the PDF content to be indexed. I have some PDFs that I can find words in and others that I can not. I guess the latter is due to encryption or such, not sure. In such cases, I was able to use the Acrobat search function to find the files, but not the DOS search. The latter would mean that even 3rd party search engines (I use AstroGrep) would not find those. So if the text is available literally, you can find it with one of the basic searches. However, Acrobat is more robust for the search of PDF files and will find them even when the file search engines will not.
If you have previous Windows versions, you have to change the file search option in the registry. However, you can still use the DOS commands. Just open DOS (Start>Cmd and enter cmd), and you can use find and findstr. To change the directory you use 'cd <directory>'. You can get help on the commands by typing 'find /?' or 'findstr /?', but I recommend just using Acrobat.

  • DX4000 Search in Windows Explorer not working

I'm the administrator of a 6TB DX4000 which is the NAS at our office of 4 PCs. The Sentinel holds about 25GB of our working data (word, excel, pdf, and other files), which I back-up every 2 days onto a WD My Passport Ultra UDB drive. I can do this using Copy/Paste functions in Windows Explorer. The USB drive can be connected via my PC or, for faster back-ups, via one of the USB ports at the back of the Sentinel (I have configured the USB drive as a shared folder). During and after the backups, everything works well (all of us at the office can save, modify, and create new folders and files). The only problem is that Windows Explorer stops displaying files/folders, also the WE search function stops working for a few hours in all PCs. Thus, we cannot locate files when the search function is not working, which is a big problem for us. This happens irregularly (sometimes after each backup and at times every couple of weeks). I’m quite certain that this issue is being originated by the backup process. I have tried a few things: restarted PCs/Sentinel/Switch/Modem to no avail. All updates have been carried-out. Also, I checked other forums/threads but haven't found a similar problem. Everything is working fine, except that we can’t do searches in WE (also searches don’t work in Word or any other software). Inexplicably, WE starts to work again by itself in full capacity a few hours later. Please let me know if there is a solution to this issue. Thanking you in advance.

Hi Gramps, Many thanks for your thoughts.  It took me a while to try various ideas, hence my slow response. When Windows Explorer was not working, Remote Desktop Connection was not working either (it was hung-up and would not load further than saying something along the lines of: updating desktop settings).  However, the Dashboard remained operational during this time.  In answer to your query:  Yes, I shared the USB My Passport from the Dashboard when I first set-up the system 9 months ago. Following your ideas, I unshared the drive using the Dashboard.  This took few hours.  Then I rebooted the Sentinel and all the PCs.  I’m glad to report that the WE is now fully operational and that the WE search function is now working.  Also, RDC is working again. I’m beginning to agree with your thoughts that File Indexing is the problem since I have been disconnecting the USB My Passport as soon as the copying of files was completed (thus Indexing may have been incomplete). Please let me know if there is a way of testing if “File Indexing” has been completed. Much appreciated.

  • Can a link or button in a PDF open Windows Explorer to a folder for browsing?

    Hello!
I am a ColdFusion and JavaScript developer, but was given a PDF search tool project that I have been developing in Acrobat XI Pro for use on Reader XI.  I have most of it figured out and working very well with several JavaScript functions behind a form.  My customer just asked for me to add a feature to allow the user to click a button or link and open up the library folder (with the documents being searched) in Windows Explorer so that they can browse to the file if they know exactly what they want.
So far, I have tried app.launchURL with the folder path and name.  That did open it in Internet Explorer, but my customer wants it in Windows Explorer.  I also tried app.browseForFile(), but I can't seem to specify the directory to start browsing it.  I can't find anything online that indicates that this is even possible or how to do it.  Can someone please point me in the right direction?  Also, if it isn't possible, I can accept that.  I just need to be able to tell my customer and I can't find any documentation on it.
Thank you very much for your help!

    Sorry,  not possible.
I want to correct myself. There is an old "hack" that still seems to work, which is to create a link to a file, but instead of pointing it to a file you point it to a folder. But Acrobat only lets you select a folder when you create such a link, so how to do it? Create a Word document with such a hyperlink and then use the PDFMaker plugin to convert the file to a PDF. This side-steps the Acrobat limitation and gives you a link to a folder, which when clicked will open it in Windows Explorer.
As I said, it's a bit of a hack and it's possible it will stop working if Adobe ever decides to block it, so use it with care.

  • PDF tab missing in Windows Explorer

We have a number of Windows 7 and Vista machines running Acrobat 9 Standard or Professional.  When viewing the file properties of any PDF in Windows Explorer on any of these machines except one, there's a "PDF" tab that displays metadata information on the file.  On one Win7 Ultimate PC running Acrobat 9.4 Professional, that tab doesn't display.  The metadata can be seein in Acrobat File -> Properties, and can be searched in Windows Explorer, but cannot be accessed using that tab.  As far as I know, there's no customization in either Acrobat or Windows that would cause this tab not to display - I've compared every setting I can think of between machines that show the PDF tab and the one that doesn't.  Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

According to the following article, this is an Adobe problem related to their shell extension called pdfshell.dll.  That extension is only a 32 bit extension, and 64 bit Windows will not run 32 bit extensions.
Check out the Ccmment from Tad Marshall here:  http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproui/thread/33971c82-78ee-445b-acb5- 5a64db5b6bb0/
"As part of the Adobe Reader download, Adobe provides a shell extension called pdfshell.dll.  On 32-bit Windows XP, you'll find it in the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Acrobat\ActiveX folder.  On 64-bit Windows 7, you'll find it in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Acrobat\ActiveX folder.  But, on either system, it's a 32-bit shell extension.  On 64-bit Windows 7, Windows Explorer will only run as a 64-bit program.  According to numerous web forum posters, this was a change between the last "beta" and the "RC" version of 64-bit Windows 7.  There is a 32-bit version of Windows Explorer in the C:\Windows\SysWOW64 folder, but if you try to run it you get another instance of 64-bit Explorer.  The (first) problem is that 64-bit Windows Explorer won't load a 32-bit shell extension.
You can see the 32-bit pdfshell.dll "working" on 64-bit Windows 7 in the File Open dialog of any 32-bit application (such as Adobe Reader).  To see this, first open an Explorer window and navigate to a folder that has some PDF files like your IBM manual.  Right click on the file and choose Properties.  Look at the tabs in the dialog and note that there is no PDF tab.  Now, OK out of the Properties dialog and double-click on the same file to open it in Adobe Reader.  Now press Ctrl-O or choose File Open to get the File Open dialog.  Navigate to the same folder, right click on the same file and choose Properties.  Look at the tabs and see that you now have the PDF tab that was missing in Explorer.  In that tab, you can see the Title that pdfshell.dll has pulled from the file.  This works because 32-bit Adobe Reader has loaded a 32-bit common file dialog which *will* load a 32-bit shell extension."

  • Thumbnail previews in Windows Explorer (Windows 7 64bit)

Is there a way to enable thumbnail previews under Windows Explorer for Acrobat X Pro? I just installed the trial and these are missing.
I know there was a bug in Acrobat 9 which required a third party hack to fix. I had hoped by now this would work correctly. Has this still not been fixed?
    Thanks.

Lol.  Adobe has known about this stupid problem for about 4 years.  Since Vista x64 started gaining popularity.  Acrobat 8.x was the first version where people really started scratching their heads wondering why & when the problem would be fixed.  Then came Acrobat 9.   And now "X".  Still not fixed, well, I'm sure next year we'll have Acrobat 11, so keep holding your breath.

  • How to disable annoying thumbnails when searching in preview

    Open a PDF in Preview.
    Search for something.
The annoying thumbnails appear, shrinking your page size or covering something else on your desktop.
I want to compare pdfs side-by-side, and the stupid thumbnail trough makes the window too wide.
How do you disable preview from popping out the thumbnail panel when searching?

Yes, you can click "Content Only" in that menu and the thumbnails go away.  But they reappear immediately when you use Command-G to go to the next search result.
I can find no way to just make them go away permanently.
Also, in yet another departure from common GUI practice, there is no way to un-check those menu items by clicking on them.  You have to click one of the other items.  In other words, they behave like radio buttons in that they are mutually exclusive, yet they are displayed as if you could select more than one of them.

  • Thumbnails in Windows Explorer

Some pdfs that I download show in Windows Explorer with a thumbnail on the icon itself. Mine show in the Preview pane, but not on the icon. How can I make pdfs that show a thumbnail on the icon in Explorer? I'm using Acrobat 9 Pro on Windows 7.
    Thanks,

I've had Acrobat 8 on XP for quite some time and all my thumbnails in Explorer were showing the first page, but then a couple of weeks ago I uninstalled some older versions of Acrobat in a bit of a clean up and suddenly I was just left with the icons. Disaster - I too have hundreds of pdf files and seeing the colour of the front page before I open a file saves me so much time.
Loading Reader didn't work for me (sorry Mike) but I found some advice in another thread to try running Repair Acrobat Installation under the help menu, then restarting. Success!!! All my thumbnails are back as I need them.

  • Windows explorer is not displaying thumbnails ( as it was earlier) instead it is showing default program icon

Hi have been reading the blog for two hours now and I am no closer to a "fix" for this for  our network users. All users on the SOE build now cannot view  or preview image files in windows explorer it is showing just the default icon for
all images files in a folder in Windows Explorer. Is ther a permanent fix to this problem that we can add to out SOE build or to the a windows update that Mircosoft has released?

    Hi,
Here're two settings we need to check:
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Folder Options, under "View" tab, untick "Always show icons, never thumbnails "
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\System, in the left panel, click "Advanced System Settings", then under "Performance" tab, click "Settings", under "Visual Effects" tab\Custom, find "Show thumbnails instead of icons", tick it.

  • Windows Explorer Thumbnail View and 7D Mark II RAW Files

I am running latest version of PhotoShop CC on Windows 8.1 Toshiba laptop. Prior to purchasing my Canon 7D Mark II, I could view Canon RAW files as photo thumbnails in Windows Explorer. Since upgrading cameras, I get generic thumbnails when I view a folder full of RAW files from the 7D Mark II. Is there a fix? I use Irfanview as a general file viewer and Adobe Camera RAW to open files in PhotoShop, but I seriously miss the ability to find a specific photo quickly in Windows Explorer.

    Hi billyray1usa ,
may I suggest that you try to use Bridge to view and navigate between the thumbnails with the possibility of having the large preview of each image in more than Adobe Bridge updates with PS and Camera Raw.
