No Previews shown In Imovie

I Just got Imovie6 and when I click on any of the video effects, titles and trasisions I get nothing in the preview window the do not see anything but a black window. The preview progress bar is moving like something may be happening but I do not see it.
Does anyone have any clues?
After looking at other posts I did have one of the 3rd party quicktime pluggins and I removed it but it did not help.

I don't think that you need a card with too much memory if your primary concern is iMovie (as opposed to gaming or other highly memory intensive apps). The Nvidia GeForce4 Mx that I recently installed in my DA mac only has 64 MB of memory and iMovie is running just fine. As for a card that will work with your particular machine, you might consider checking with wwww.macsales.com where you can do a search based on your specific model and find out what cards (which they happen to carry) would be compatible. Alternatively, Ebay usually is a good place to check for older cards (which is probably what you want if you want to keep the price down). Just be sure to pay attention to the types of video outputs the card has so you won't run into problems connecting whatever type of monitor you have. In my case, I needed a compatible card with an ADC output and that limited my available choices. Good luck.

  • Some videos are not shown in iMovie - why?

I imported several videos from iPad/iPhone or my sony camcorder into my Aperture Library.
Now I want to work with the videos in iMovie but I cannot see them there. The videos are integrated into the Aperture library and not only linked to it. I do not have an explanation but it seems that from a certain date in the past no videos are shown in iMovie any more.
Can you help me and tell me what to do to get access on the video data in Aperture for editing in iMovie?
    Thanks!

Try running a library on the Aperture Library.
I think Frank meant running the Aperture Library First Aid Tools -  "Repair Database", or "Repair Permissions", "Rebuild Library".

  • Photos not previewing properly in iMovie hd6

From an external HD I import jpeg photos into imovie hd 6.0.1 to make a slide show. If I do anything else (move slider in frame view) in iMovie using preview goes blank or may revert to the last photo in my iPhoto library (which I am not importing from). Also, after emptying the trash in iMovie mulitiple photos lose the ability to preview (black screen). iMovie 5 never did this. Any suggestions? I'm not sure I understand the 'plist' referred to in other threads.

Updating Ken Burns stills works only until you empty the trash
After emptying the trash, and then selecting the still to be updated via the Media/Photos/Show Photo Settings tab, the appropriate Ken Burns update window appears but the view screen is black and the still isn't updated.
The reason for this bug is that iMovie HD 6 discards the source image of the imported clip when we empty the iMovie trash. In all previous versions of iMovie, that source image was retained in the Media folder, allowing us to later Update the rendered clip. That's no longer true. The image is being tossed out of the iMovie trash, making a future Update impossible. And because the source image is gone, iMovie displays nothing but black in the Preview window.
One workaround, of course, is to never empty the iMovie trash. If you never do that, you'll always be able to Update your rendered images. The bug won't have a chance to bite.
A better way is to trick iMovie into retaining the source image it stores in the Media folder and never discard it when you empty the iMovie trash. If you can force iMovie to retain that source image, you'll always be able to update the rendered clip that uses the image. (Remember, it's only the source image of RENDERED clips that iMovie discards when it shouldn't.) How to force iMovie to keep the image? Make an unrendered clip of the image by importing it with the Ken Burns checkbox OFF, then drag that clip to the Clips pane. Leave it there. Later, to create your animated still-image clip, either import the image again, or Option-drag its twin from the Clips pane to the Timeline. (Option-dragging copies the clip. Then Update it with the Ken Burns checkbox ON. iMovie will render it normally.)
Why does the first clip "protect" the rendered clip? Because this bug is not the smartest bug in the colony. If the source image has been discarded the bug is too dumb to notice, and substitutes black. (That's the bug.) But if the Media folder contains a source image named "Image xxx" the bug uses it, even if it's not officially connected to the rendered clip. So the UNrendered clip protects the RENDERED twin.
Thanks to Iain MacDonald, Al Seper and Karl Petersen for spotting and explaining this bug.

  • Scale import preview Windows in iMovie 11 ?

how can I scale the import preview window in  iMovie 11 ?   It worked in iMovie 09 (iLife 09) but it does not anymore in iMovie 11 .
Actually I did not find out how to scale my import preview window in iMovie 11 when I connect an external Firewire Camera. The Import Preview- Windows stays fixed. This worked fine in imovie 09 !!
When I switch to the internal iSight Camera then You can scale the Import Preview Window as I was with other iMovie Versions.

  • Video not showing up in preview screen on iMovie & Photobooth not working

Its like all of a sudden a bunch of video programs on my Mac have stopped going.
I am running OSX Lion 10.7.3
I have recently installed Elgato Video Capture and have been recording old VHS tapes and editing in iMovie. Was having no problems at first. Then the picture in the preview screen disappeared, the sound was still going, then that went too. I am wondering if Elgato video capture has something to do with it..
When I go to old videos, they play fine.
I also noticed the camera wont load in photobooth anymore.
If anyone has any information on this or knows how to fix it, that would be great! Thanks

Had same problem on iPad. Go to settings. Look under privacy. Make sure you turn on iMovie under the photos heading. Might also need to enable location services for iMovie. Now I can see camera roll from iMovie.

  • Pixelated images when in preview mode on iMovie, but when I pause it the images become clear. How do I fix this?

I just bought the latest version of iMovie and I am on 10.9.4. I transferred my slideshow from the old iMovie to the new one and almost all the pictures become pixelated when in preview mode. Yet when I pause it, the picture becomes clear. What do I do? It's driving me insane!

After more attemps at cropping Im noticing that the saved version is unzoomed, so if I move the zoom bar just a tad the image becomes instantly sharp. But sadly that doesnt help me because iphoto will only let me save it and post it online as the unsharp pixulated version. Can anyone please help me!

  • Setting Preview Image for iMovie

I just created several tutorial videos using iMovie. The videos are embedded in an online course I'm developing. Does anyone know how to set the preview image that appears for the video?
Right now, the preview image (i.e. the image that appeard under the "play icon" for the video before the video is clicked on) is just a black image. I believe the player that I'm using defaults to the first frame of the video, which is a black screen. Is there a way to change this? Our tech folks said the preview image is a setting within the video, not the player.
    Thanks for your help.

  • 10.5.3: No more preview window in iMovie '08

It was fine until I installed the 10.5.3 update, now I have no preview of what I'm editing in iMovie '08, basically rendering the program useless. It can't be used if I can't see what I'm editing.

    hi
this worked for my Preview problem.
    i deleted the following files:
    com.apple.Preview.bookmarks.plist
    com.apple.Preview.ImageSizingPresets.plist
    com.apple.Preview.plist
it took a few minutes. but eventually, Preview went back to working normally and displaying the photos i opended.
maybe deleting the iMovie plist files would help you?
    hope this helps.

  • Unwanted moderate distortion of aspect ratio when exporting video

This seems to be a new problem for me, and I don't THINK I've changed any of my parameters. But the result is now wrong... Help!
I use my VCR to record from US broadcasts (good old fashioned plain old TV, NTSC, I presume). Then I transfer snippets onto my DV camcorder (good ol' plain DV, nothing with 16:9 or anything like that). Then I import my DV footage into iMovie HD 6.0.2. It imports fine and looks like a normal aspect ratio.
But when I export using the File > Export... setting, I get a Quicktime video which appears vertically squished. The faces are too wide, bodies are too fat.
Looking at the various aspect ratios, I see that the preview window in iMovie HD is about 720 by 525 -- there are no black bars or letterboxing, and faces and bodies look normal. But the output video is 720 by 480, which is (according to a quick Google search) a normal NTSC output. No cropping has taken place, and no letterboxing, either. So that's why it's squished. But...
So why is iMovie showing me something from right off my TV screen which is the wrong aspect ratio but seems to have the correct proportions? That would seem to imply that my good ol' TV and VCR are not actually operating in NTSC proportions... which would be extremely weird because the footage I happen to have recorded is from an old game show from the 1960s. Do I have some setting wrong somewhere?? Is there something fundamental I don't understand? Help! Like I said, this is a new problem with me and I don't recall having changed any import settings.

Thanks for your help! I had no idea that so many video processes use rectangular pixels. But I'm still confused. What I see on screen in iMovie (and most QuickTime stuff) looks fine, but what I got out of this last set of conversions looks wrong.
Obviously you used the Full Quality DV option which uses rectangular pixels, right?
Uh... I have no idea. I've spent a couple of minutes looking through the menus in iMovie and I don't see anything labeled "Full Quality DV". I'm not specifically trying to export in DV format; I'm trying to compress my NTSC format so that it plays back in nearly full size on my iBook laptop, which cannot keep up with Sorensen video or the H.264 (or two-sixty-whatever) codecs. I found that Cinepak CAN be played back at this size on my iBook. But Cinepak is a compression standard, not a video frame size standard, right?
What you are seeing is normal... 720x480 NTSC rectangular pixel DV should be scaled to 656x480 square pixels.
No, it's not normal. It doesn't look normal to the eye. It's not what normally happened to me in the past. It drives me nuts. By those three definitions, it's not normal.
I am not trying to export in a format that fits some video standard or TV set. I'm trying to export a QuickTime movie which will display properly when played back by QuickTime. So I'm extremely frustrated when iMovie (or something) takes a video clip from an NTSC source and for some odd reason squishes it.
When you say that "720x480 NTSC rectangular pixel DV should be scaled to 656x480 square pixels", I assume you mean that it should be scaled to that number of square pixels in order to display on a computer monitor with square pixels (i.e., basically all computer monitors) in a way which makes faces and bodies appear of normal proportions, right? Are you implying that the problem is that rectangular pixels are NOT being converted/resampled to square pixels, but that the conversion is being done on a (no-resampling) pixel-by-pixel basis? I'm just not sure I understnand the point you are making here.
Since I had different results in the past, there must be SOMETHING different about my current setup. After reading the link you suggested, I see that there are a HUGE number of possible complications out there. The main idea, however, is that I want to produce a QuickTime movie which looks the same as the preview shown in iMovie: Same shape of faces, same shape of bodies, just as it was when I originally viewed the footage on my television.
    Thanks!

  • IMovie Preview Not Working since latest Firmware Update (11/14/2006)

I was working on an iMovie project without incident until an automatic Firmware update was completed. Since the update, the editing preview function of iMovie is a black screen. The movie plays, but when you attempt to edit the Ken Burns effects, etc ... the preview screen is black so you are unable to edit a viewable screen. Strange ... anyone else - post firmware update issues on the MacBook Pro?

    (Quoting Karl Petersen here:)
There's a bug in iMovie 6 that makes it impossible to re-edit (Update) photo clips previously imported with the Ken Burns checkbox ON. The source photo, normally stored in the Media folder of the project, is (inappropriately) discarded when you empty the iMovie trash. The clips Update as black clips and the preview is usually black too, if I recall.
The workaround is to 1) drag the photo from the iMovie trash to the iMovie Clips pane; or 2) never empty the iMovie trash.

  • IChat, iPhoto, iMovie, Mail, Preview applications gone!

All of the applications that come standard with your Mac seem to be completely deleted! After seeing a question mark over the application icon in the dock, I searched far and wide on my mac for anything related to these applications and everything is gone. I do not know what happened. What should I do?!? I don't have the leopard disks and have yet to create a restore image. Ahhh!

and what happened to your leopard install disk? you need it to reinstall Mail and Preview. iphoto and iMovie are not part of the OS. they are part of iLife which comes for free with every new computer. however, they are not on the leopard install DVD. you need to reinstall them from the install disks that came with your computer or buy a stand alone version of ilife.

  • IMovie + Preview Window = Garbled GUI

    Hey everyone
Lately, I've been experiencing an issue with iMovie in which the preview window suddenly becomes a randomized mess of images from elsewhere on the screen (stuff from the menu bar, text, dock icons, pieces of the wallpaper, etc.) This is usually accompanied by a system freeze. After this occurs, it happens not only in iMovie, but any time I use quicktime (not VLC, just quicktime, so it's an apple-related issue). However, I've recently noticed that it also causes GUI issues, such as folder stacks and file icons also becoming garbled (there was even an instance where the address book icon ENGULFED HALF MY SCREEN).
A restart usually solves this, but does anyone know a permanent fix for this? Do I need to reinstall iLife?

I see you've had 50 viewers look at this question, but no one has answered it. No one commented on my post on the same subject two days ago either, but we both have a similar problem. Here's my situation:
I am not able to see my movie in the "Preview Window" of iMovie, after creating a project and event. I had just erased my hard drive, installed a new system directly from SnowLeopard and added iMovie09 (then updated it to v. 8.0.6). Before opening and importing photos to iPhoto, however, I downloaded a DEMO VERSION OF APERTURE, to see if I wanted to purchase that instead of using iPhoto. Next I opened iMovie and imported some photos from Aperture. Everything worked fine. After a few days of working with Aperture I decided to delete it and use iPhoto09. Here's where the problems started. I could bring photos into iMovie from iPhoto but when I tired to make them run as a movie, nothing appeared in the Preview window. I've made dozens of iMovies before, so I expected it to work as it always had.
I deleted everything I could find about Aperture, even the Library/Cache of Aperture. I deleted everything I could find about iMovie even the Library/Preferences/com.apple.iMovie08. I reinstalled iPhoto09 and iMovie09. I've emptied the iPhoto libraries and started over there too with photos only, no video even, but I still can't bring in even a simple photo and have it appear in the Preview window of iMovie.
There must be a bug somewhere. I'd just like to make simple old iPhoto work with iMovie without the ghosts of Aperture interferring.
I know I haven't answered your question or helped you with your problem, but by combining our efforts and complaint, maybe someone will help us both.
    Best wishes.

  • How do I get the viewer in imovie to reflect the correct orientation of the video?

I have a video that I've taken with my iphone 4s which plays with the correct orientation in quicktime. When I import it into imovie '08, the event thumbnails reflect the correct orientation as well but for some reason the preview shown in the viewer is upside and if I export it, the output is upside down. I've attached a screenshot so everyone can see exactly what I'm talking about. Now if I rotate the clip so that the thumbnails appear upside down, the viewer shows the correct orientation, but that isn't really a solution. Also, I should mention that this is a fresh install of imovie. Any help would be much appreciated!

I definitely appreciate the response. I'm aware of how to rotate the clip as a workaround, but simply rotating the clip so that the clip itself appears upside down and the viewer output looks right side up doesn't really fix the underlying problem. In the past whenever I've used imovie, the viewer reflects the orientation of the event/project thumbnails instead of being the opposite orientation. Any thoughts on why the viewer wouldn't be reflecting the same orientation as the clip?

  • Sony HDR-HC3 1080i imports out of sync to iMovie

My old DV camcorder imported into iMovie 6.0.2 just fine. Have just bought the new SONY HDR-HC3E HDV handycam - component set to 1080i/576i and HDV/DV converter set to off.
Created new iMovie project and selected video format HD 1080i. iMovie sees the camera okay but when i press play control or import control, iMovie tells me it is previewing or importing iMovie content at 1/2 or 3/4 speed. Picture in iMovie window is clearly moving slower than picture on camcorder screen. When i press pause or stop and review clip that has been imported into iMovie it plays back with the sound out of sync. Can anyone suggest what I'm doing wrong?
    Thanks

    Hi kosmo
    Most obvious thought.
    - is Your Camera set to 12-bit sound or does it have LP/EP mode (long/extended) that
records more minutes on a standard tape than normal play.
    - should be 16-bit sound and SP (standard play) mode.
If this is relevant to Your situation !

  • Aspect Ratio Problem (black bars on top and bottom in the preview window)

I have iMovie 08 and I have been shooting video on my new Canon HF100. It appears that in iMovie preview window my 1920x1080 (and even the ones I bring in in 960x540) videos appear to be in wrong aspect ratio - they are stretched beyond 16:9 ratio horizontally. The problem persists if I export the movie through Quicktime - the videos are still stretched. In the preview window in iMovie I have the right 16:9 box but it has black bars on to and the bottom. The clips themselves in the time line seem to be the correct aspect ratio.

Also I have found this on the export video screen which narrows it down a bit...
Here's how the source tab of that screen looks...
compared to the output tab, with the black bars that are my issue...
So where did I go wrong here?
