No print to PDF option

Very recently (after the latest security update?), I've lost the option on the print dialogue to print to a PDF. A work-around is to preview and then save the preview as a PDF, but I would like to have the print to PDF option back. I've run Disk Utility to repair disk permissions after already booted up and also booting up from an OS-X install disk. When running repair disk permissions after booting up from my startup disk, it takes very a long time and generates many warnings about SIUD files that have been modified and will not be repaired. Related? Any ideas how to get the PDF drop-down option back?

It happened to me too, apparently spontaneously, a month after installing Leopard, so I doubt it is a printer install issue. AppleCare first said "its a Word problem - call Microsoft", but it happens in all applications including iTunes and iPhoto at least. I called AppleCare back and then they said "its an Adobe problem - we don't support it". They wouldn't even try to tell me if the underlying program is Adobe or Preview or what. (How can they not even try and support their own aps, even with a purchased AppleCare program??) I searched Adobe and they disclaim any support of native ap "save as pdf" functions. Repairing permissions and deleting plists for anything I could find related and updating prebinding in Terminal didn't help. I use the pdf function A LOT at work and the workarounds through other aps is too inconvenient. I also can't afford to reinstall the OS every month. Grrrrrr....

  • Acrobat PDF 8 printer missing pdf options

I have seen this discussed in a few places, but have never come across a fix that works for me. Basically when trying to print to the pdf printer, the pdf options is not available in the drop-down of printer settings. This is affecting about 10 of my machines at different sites.
I have tried removing the ppd and letting Acrobat repair it. I have also tried multiple other suggestions to change the permissions of the ppd file. the other method I have tried is to remove the pdf preferences from ~/Library/Preferences.
I am running 10.4.11 on all of these machines with the latest version of Acrobat 8 professional.
Thank you for any help you can provide!
    -Ken

I've been playing with this for a couple of months now and haven't got any closer to a solution. It is not application specific. The problem can be seen when printing from any application to the Adobe PDF 8 printer.
The only thing I can think of that may be different is that I modified the Adobe installer to include the volume serial number for our organization.
Things I have tried that have not worked:
    * Cleared caches, preferences, fixed permissions, verified no disk problems
    * removed PPD, and PDF plugins from /Library/Printers/PPD\ Plugins/ and /usr/libexec/cups/backend/pdf088
    * removed preferences and application support files from /Library and ~/Library
    * Let Acrobat repair everything
    * Reset print system
    * Ran all updates
    * Manually uninstalled CS3 and re-installed
I have the same problem on Leopard, but I am able to fix it by fixing the two aliases located in ~/Library/Preferences/com.adobe.print/AdobePDF8/Aliases/ Or just simply delething them and letting them regenerate.
I know more people out there are having the same problem, I just don't see any answers out there that actually work.
    Thank you,

  • Print booklet: pdf option?

Hi, I'm using Adobe CC InDesign and I'm trying to "print" (save) a booklet but I only have the post script option and I want to save it as pdf to print it later.
    What can I do? Thanks

Unless you use Windows or an older version of OS X, and have an older version of Acrobat Pro that installed the PDF printer (see InDesignSecrets » Blog Archive » Acrobat’s Adobe PDF Printer Replaced in Snow Leopard ) you don't have a print to PDF option available. You'll have to print to Postscript, then distill.

  • Print to pdf option in report

    I am working on a drill-down report...
So I have a Summary and a Details report...
Now i need a way to select multiple records in the Summary report so i can print the details for those entries...
I don't want to use the default "save as pdf" option...
It would be nice to add a link or a button...
Is there any way I can do this...
    Dhananjay Rele

    Hi Dhananjay,
According to your description, you have a drilldown report where you have different summary report and entries for toggling down to see detail reports. Now you want to select different summary reports, collect detail reports of those selected summary reports
and put them into a PDF file by using a link or button, right?
In Reporting Service, we cannot collect part of the report into a PDF by only using a link or button directly.  What we can do is using parameter to filter multiple records, and using “Go to a report” action and passing this parameter to another report.
Then show the detail information on this report based on different summary. At last export this detail report to a PDF file. We have tested this case in our local environment. Here are steps and screenshots for your reference:
Go to your summary report. Create a parameter for summary (select allow multiple values).
    Create a filter in dataset.
Create a new Textbox, type “View Detail” in it. Right click on this Textbox, select Textbox Properties.
Select Action tab. In select a report from the list, select your detail report. Add the summary parameter in Use these parameters to run the report.
Go your detail report. It supposes to have a parameter for drilldown already, now you just need to select allow multiple values in Parameter Properties.
Also create a filter in your dataset (use the parameter you have created for drilldown).
    Save and preview.
Select summary in dropdown list and click “View Report”.
    Click view Detail.
    Export report into PDF file.

  • I am missing the 'print to pdf' option on my entire adobe creative suite 'HELP!'

I really need some help.  After installing a new printer to my computer I noticed that my adobe programs would not longer allow me to Print to PDF.  I originally thought it was a problem with my mac, but after doing tech support with them, we discovered that it is actually a problem within my adobe programs. After talking with mac, I decided to try uninstalling my new printer and rebooting my computer - this made no difference.  Then I made sure all my adobe updates were current.  ALL UPDATED.  I also tried downloading a trial of the new acrobat 11, still nothing.  Finally I uninstalled my entire suite and reinstalled it.  Throughout this whole ordeal I rebooted my computer after every step.  NOTHING.
Please help, I really don't know what else to try and I haven't been able to find an answer within the forums.
Just to make sure that I am clear.  I am trying to resize a huge amount of PDF's created from illustrator files and would like to do  this by printing to pdfs.  When you try to print now, there are no options because there are no printer drivers at all.
    Argh!
hope someone has an idea, I'm working on a project with a deadline and really require a solution.
    Thanks
    Gilbo Jaggins.

Hi, thanks for answering. No, I haven't updated the OS recently.  However, doesn't the Adobe suite utilize it's own print to pdf driver?  This is what I was told by Mac.  Safari, Textedit, etc, all can print to pdf, so can't be a Mac issue.

  • No "convert to pdf " and no " print to pdf " option after install

I installed adobe acrobat reader professional 8 at home ( WIN 7 ) and everything works great there, but after installing it at work ( WIN 7 ) i have no option when i right click a file in the drop down menu that says " convert to adobe pdf ", and also in word i have no option to " Print to  PDF " in the printer menu.
Thoses options are on my home PC but not work PC ? the only thing i can think of is a USER RESTRICTION that is in place that does not give my user account the option to use thoses two options ?
Im I wrong  ? and if so how can i get thoses options at work like i have at home ?
    TY for any help giving

First, you either have Adobe Acrobat Pro 8 Or Adobe Reader 8. Acrobat Reader Professional 8 does not exist.
If you have Acrobat, we'll try and work this out. If you have Reader, you don't get either of those items since it's made for viewing/printing PDF's.
My suggestion is to open the application you installed then go to the Help dropdown and see whether it says Acrobat or Reader. Also, be sure you don't have both products installed since that could cause similar issues as this.

  • Print: Compress PDF Option Help - Leopard

    hello,
as a preface, we're a photography company that routinely saves PDF files with images to send to clients for approval.
i understand that with leopard, they removed the Compress PDF option from the print menu. i followed the instructions, opened it up with Preview and saved as reduced file size. the images all came out VERY grainy. with the Compress PDF option, the image quality was great.
so i went and restored Compress PDF using this link: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/automator/compresspdfworkflow.html
however the images still come out as grainy as they did with the "reduce file size" option. anyone have any advice on how to get it working like it did in the previous OS?
    thanks much

I had more or less the same issur.

  • Print to PDF option is not there anymore

I was trying to create a PDF via PRINT.
I was changing the settings and now the option to print to PDF is gone.
any ideas how to get it back?

I'm working on CS5 and when printing, under the Color Management pull down, there is  one for Output.
There is a button on the bottom right "BLEED"
You can set the size there.
I also found my Print to PDF...
    it's under PRINT SETTIINGS.
I could have sworn it was in the lower left, but that's browser.
still don't see how to set bleeds if I Save As.

  • Print: Compress PDF Option is Gone!

Print: Compress PDF is Gone in Leopard for PowerPoint. I used it often. I tried to compress in Preview but the resolution is way too grainy. Help!!!!!!

    OK - one step forward!
You need to create a new "Filter" in Colorsync. Start Colorsync, select Filters, press the + button to create a new filter. Give it a meaningful name like "Compress PDF Medium Quality".
Click on the down arrow at the right and select Add Image Effects Components.
Choose Image Compression from the list - image Compression attributes will appear.
Change MODE to JPG (it works for me)
Change the QUALITY to near maximum (you may need to experiment with this)
Close this new filter by clicking on the arrow at left.
Now OPEN the PDF with the Colorsync FILE/OPEN menu selection.
Select EXPORT from the Colorsync FILE menu
Your new filter should appear in the drop-down menu for Quartz Filter
Doing this reduced a 1Mb PDF to 450Kb and the image quaility was acceptable. The built-in filter reduced it to 280K but image quality was poor.

  • Saving/Printing as PDF- options

    Hi all,
Question about saving and/or printing an FM book as a PDF. Is there a way to specify what version of PDF it is created in? I am trying to create and save a doc as a pre PDF Version 1.5 -- I don't see this option anywhere. Is it possible? Or does it just create the PDF in the version according to what is installed on my machine (i.e. it creates a version 1.5 b/c I am using Acrobat V9 Pro Extended )?
I'm using Windox XP, FM 9.0p237 as part of the TCS2.
    TIA,
    Adriana

Have I mentioned lately how grateful I am for these forums?!
Arnis - thank you very much. That is the setting exactly I am looking for! I appreciate the fast and accurate help so much.
Another question related if you don't mind -- when I print the FM book as a ps file, as soon as I open the ps file it opens automatically with distiller and creates the PDF in whatever settings I last used in the distiller.  Is there a way to just have the distiller open, then select the compatibility, then create the PDF file?  As it is now, I open distiller, select my settings, close the distiller, then print the FM book as ps file, and then run the distiller on the ps file. But then I have to remember to put my compatibility settings back to "Standard" before my next job.
    Thanks again!

  • Update pushed from Adobe for Acrobat X failed and now the "print to a PDF" option is missing. How do I get it back?

Adobe pushed a security update to my computer and the update failed.  Now the "print to PDF" option is missing from all of my programs.  How do I get it back?
    Version X.1.12.

Thanks.  That's exactly what I did, but from the Adobe help screen.  It did the trick, but I'm not very happy with Adobe for messing up my system.
    I appreciate your answering back.

  • Print to PDF from within Acrobat Pro X

I keep reading threads here and there about users having the same issues that I'm having with Acrobat Pro X... I used to be able to print a portion of a PDF file to create another PDF... I see a lot of answers like SAVE AS and EXTRACTing pages... While this may work in some situations, I haven't found an easy way to achieve the results that I was getting from the "Print to PDF" option.
I work with files that have many pages of large CAD drawings... I am constantly finding the need to send PDF's of portions of the detailed drawings... It used to be as easy as zooming to the detail in question, select Print>Adobe PDF>Current Viewthen I could quickly mark up the detail and email it...
I've tried SAVE AS and EXTRACT, but I then have to DELETE the unwanted pages, then CROP the detail and save... this gets rather tedious when involved with multiple drawings, pages and details... There's got to be a better way...
    Thanks
    Drew

    1. Correction - the deployed machines are running 10.1.7 (not 10.1.17)
    2. The majority of our machines are running 32bit, I have not tested the 64bit installations to see if they exhibit the same problems.
    3. I didn't expect that printing to an open pdf would be possible. The point was that in attempting to do so, no error message is generated and the pdf printer / IE hang. Closing the open pdf does not release them. Anyway, I suspect this is a separate issue and af far less importance to me.
I've had to be away from the office most of today so have not done much more testing. I'll update as soon as I have.

  • Can't 'print to pdf' from ANY app, it just...

    stops after processing some bytes.
As the title says, happens from any app, text, preview, word, safari, firefox...
and upon further inspection, distiller crashes when trying to distil a .PS file (generated from indesigncs2) into a pdf.
    i have tried:
    repair prefs
deleted distiller and acrobat related prefs
    reinstalled acrobat (version 7 btw)
tried to use distiller and 'print to pdf' option prior to each option - still no go.
however, i created a new account, and in the new account, it worked fine hmmm, so its my account..
what can i do to fix my pdf problems??
    thanks in advance.

    sim888,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Nice troubleshooting, particularly using another user account to determine it's something in your account that's causing the problem. Without dragging your entire user Library/ Preferences file to the Desktop and then returning .plists a few at a time to watch for the problem to return, you could check your user preferences (.plist) files in Terminal by entering the command:
    find ~/Library -name '*.plist' -exec /usr/bin/plutil -lint {} \;
You can also download Preferential Treatment
I've seen scattered reports of problems using OS X's built-in print-to-PDF when some versions of Adobe software are installed. Are Distiller etc. installed for general use or under the relatively rare single-user access? In the hunting in the dark category, with no programs open, you could look at Activity Monitor in both user accounts and see if you spot any background user (non-system) processes running in your normal user account that aren't in the test user, then force-quit those user processes to see if printing to PDF works without conflicts. I'm not sure what log a failed print to PDF would go into, but you can open Console look through console.log, system.log, and CrashReporter et al. for events timestamped around the time of a failed print-to-PDF attempt. The backtrace of any failure report may provide additional clues.

  • Can't print to pdf since I installed Snow Leopard.

I make newspaper ads all the time in Illustrator CS4 on a Mac.
I always print them to pdf files. Never had any trouble doing this.
However, since I installed Snow Leopard I can not print to pdfs.
I go through the usual motions and then... just nothing happens.
Are there known issues with AI CS4 and Snow Leopard?

I was having the same problem. Basically, you now have to "save as" then "to PDF" to get the same results. Although this new method give you more choices in terms of output, i.e. saving layers, image resolution, it has also produced larger PDF files. I will then have to open the document in Acrobat and "reduce file size". I do wish they would bring back the print to PDF option. Go to the link below to read more. If you figure out how to produce the same results and get the small files sizes back please share.
