No problem, just curious abt performance

I'm using Lightroom on a Toshiba Satellite A75 with a P4, 3.2Ghtz CPU with 1.2 gig of RAM running XP Home, and Lightroom runs just fine even when I've got PSE5, ACDSee V8, ACDSee fotoSlate, and occasionally Outlook 2003 running at the same time. Yes, SOME functions do slow down some times, but overall, it isn't significantly slower than any other product that claims to compete with LR. And let's face it, my set up is definitely NOT state of the art at this point.
YET, People with what sound like much more powerful systems complain about LR performance. And people with systems that sound pretty much like mine also complain about performance. But at the same time, other people that fit the above descriptions also feel performance is just fine. It seems there is no consistent pattern regarding performance issues.
What is going on here? It can't be just a perception issue of some people, can it? I'm not known as a particularly patient guy, so I would think I'm very likely to whine about performance if I thought I wasn't getting full performance out of LR.
Why is performance satisfaction/dissatisfaction all over the place?

Virtually every installation has some unique attributes--from software to configuration. Discovering where a conflict or bottleneck takes place is both and art and a science, and it has to be practiced one case at a tiem by individual users in cases where there is such incosnistency as in LR performance speed.
One good thing about trying to find the hangup on your configuration is that you will learn a great deal about computers, especially your own. Yes, that is doing it the hard way in one sense, but in many cases that is all you can do--and in the end you still may not be successful.
If it were me, I'd use Occam's Razor and start by putting it on by itself on a dual boot partition--no internet, no virus checkers, nothing--and then add applications one at a time to find what bogs it down. I have a copy LR on my main boot setup, and separately with CS3, a couple of image utilities, and a DAM, put on one at a time and tested after each new addition.
It runs 30-35% faster in that lean carefully controlled environment. Do I know why it is so much slower in the ebvironment where I have virus, malware, spyware, word processing, accounting, internet and mail, etc, etc, etc applications--not a clue! But, then again, I am not in the slightest surprised that it has been affected by something in that jumble of diverse applications.
No amount of testing by any software team at Adobe or anywhere else would be able to find all the interactive problems that can potentially occur in today's extraordinarily diverse, complex (and rich) computing enviroments--especially on PCs.
I think you will note that the number of issues with LR from the Mac side are far fewer, and the general level of expressed satisfaction much higher. That, however, will not get me to buy a Mac :)
I have a number of serious complaints about LR, but relative speed isn't one of them.

  • Not a problem, just curious

Hey all... a few times now I have packed up the Apple TV and headed over to a buddy's place to watch some movies. Up until last night, didn't really put much thought into it, but last night it suddenly occurred to me...
I never set the ATV up to work on his network.
As the film drew to a close, I became curious so checked out the network settings: not quite what I was expecting. I had the ATV connected to his Airport network via RJ-45, but according to the network settings I was actually connected to my home network, taking my IP address from the DHCP here, using the DNS here, etc...
Hmm, thought I, that could be why the trailers took so long to open up..
So just curious... I was way out of range of my own Airport network: is the ATV able to access Back to My Mac, and connected that way??
Again, not a problem. Just curious.

According to your original post, you mention being out of range of your Airport network, thus I thought that you were using wireless.
Also, I'm not sure what you mean by:
"according to the network settings I was actually connected to my home network, taking my IP address from the DHCP here, using the DNS here"
How could you tell? If both you and your friend left your routers' using the default 192.168.x.x IP address range (or picked the same IP address range), the network settings would be exactly the same at both places.

My iPhone 5 just fell on the floor from a water tumbler. The height mayb like 2 -3 feet. i'm just curious to know if i have to worry about any kind of internal damage. It had a moshi cover on when it fell but it fell on the side of the screen so just worried about the microphone or the front camera. Someone please reply if i should go to Apple and give the phone for a hardware check.

The only choice you have is accept it as it is or pay for a replacement
Any user damage is not covered by the warranty but at any time if you have problems in the future you can obtain an out of warranty exchange unit for $229 in US
I would forget it for now ,just not drop it again

  • Iphone 4S size is great just improve its performance

why do apple phones needs to extend its size and forcing its thickness to be much more thin? instead of just improving its performance? I think iPhone 4S design size and thickness is the ideal size for apple handheld phones. people requesting for bigger screen that's why there's an iPad and iPad-mini to meet these demand instead of extending the size of iPhone and to be much more thinner. durability of today's iPhone is gone... even apple's legacy design has gone wrong nowadays because of its bigger size it needs enough space on my pocket.

Try restoring the iPhone to factory settings. If you are having difficult restoring, put the iPhone into Recovery Mode and see if that then works:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808
If not, or if a restore to factory settings does not fix the problem, then your iPhone may have a hardware problem. You can only get the iPhone serviced by Apple in Canada, so you will have to take the iPhone there or send it to someone you know in Canada who can get the iPhone serviced and send it back to you. The only option for getting service in Pakistan would be to pay some unauthorized repair shop to attempt a repair, after which Apple will no longer provide any service even in Canada.
    Regards.

  • Not really a problem just would like to know if I install firefox 4 beta...will I lose my bookmarks already in my current firefox browers and is that the same for the farmville game bar from facebook

Not really a problem just would like to know if I install firefox 4 beta...will I lose my bookmarks already in my current firefox browers and is that the same for the farmville game bar from facebook

It should not be a problem, as long as you are careful. Note the delete settings option when uninstalling firefox will delete bookmarks etc for ALL installed versions of firefox.
Firefox attempts to retain the profile information, that include bookmarks etc when updating. It may still be prudent to consider other backup methods not entirely dependent on firefox.
The firefox 4 beta will install by default in a slightly different location, you are then able to run either the current or the beta version of firefox. It is recommended you set up a new profile for the new version of firefox. see

  • If I send in my white iPhone for repair is there any chance I could get a black one? Just curious

Just curious but I went to get an iPhone 5 for an upgrade I really wanted a black iphone 5 but they only had white ones in stock, I was wondering (because my screens cracked) will they possibly send me a refurbished black iPhone 5?!

No, I've got the package to send my iPhone away to be repaired but I don't see what the harm is in sending the exact same phone just in a different colour?

  • Attached pdf wont open - problem just started

This week, pdfs attached to e-mail give error message "Download Error, download cannot be saved because an unknown error occurred - try again". On the Download window, the message is "Failed, Mailbox Resource". Yet I can Save the file to desktop and open it.
This problem just started to happen.
Help would be appreciated ... thanks in advace

I just started having this same issue a day or two ago. I tried the fix described above and it did not help.
When I click on the attached file in the outgoing mail, nothing happens; when I send the file to myself and click on the attachment at the bottom of the received message I get the following error message: "The download cannot be save because an unknown error occurred. Please try again." But if I manually click on the "Save" button at the right of the attachment bar (or line, or whatever you call it), it does save just fine and will open just fine.
I am running Win7 with all service packs. As I indicated, this problem just popped up very recently, during an interval when I had left the computer on in "sleep" mode but otherwise did not use it. HOWEVER, before trying it after waking up my machine today, I did download and install the latest security updates from micronumb. Could these latest updates be the problem?
Thanks for any assistance anyone can give me.

Try going to https://expresslane.apple.com ; select 'All Products and Services' in the first column, 'iTunes' in the second column and then 'iTunes Store' in the third column.

  • I'm just curious, what does Apple name the second hard drive

I got a G5 with one hard drive which was by default named "Macintosh HD". When someone orders two hard drives what does Apple name the second hard drive by default? I'm just curious.

  • Just curious about best way to install

I'm just curious as to which way it would be best to install this new OS? Clean or just upgrade it with the earlier version on the disk? Is there any difference between the two (I mean after the install, not in the actual process of installing it)? Thanks in advance.

There is no "clean install" option on the SL install disc. Just back your drive up and run the installer.

I read and read and have not found any reference....what does it mean when the column next to the Blue circle on the left side of the Discussions Question ...the one with the Green Answered Star or ? with a Green ball or ? - is empty with nothing in it....What does that mean when it is empty?
    Thanks, BJArt

    Hi, BJArt ,
When it is empty, it means it is not a Question. A statment/annoucment i suppose. Also there are no helpful and solved .

  • Just curious... comparing Tiger and Leopard???

Maybe some of the older mac users can answer this question for me. I just got my macbook in June 2007, preloaded with Tiger. Tiger worked perfectly, no bugs, no crashes. Now it seems with the upgrade to Leopard that there have been lots of problems with the OS, and everyone keeps proclaiming how they like Tiger so much better. This got me to wondering, when exactly was Tiger released, i.e. how long did Apple have to fix all of its bugs? Does anyone remember, when Tiger was first released was there as much of a problem upgrading from the old OS (Panther?) as there is now with the upgrade from Tiger to Leopard?
    Just wondering...

A lot of people like what they already have and don't want to work at optimizing their system, upgrading or changing to new programs, or buying new hardware with performance in mind. There are always hidden costs to upgrading to a new OS. If you don't want to pay for these costs, then there is no reason to pay for the OS.
Owners of older Macs should run XBench 1.3 before deciding to overload it with a new OS that's designed to run on totally different hardware than they purchased just a few years ago. If your overall score is above 65 you will probably do OK, not great, just OK. If your score is above 100 then you will probably do very well. These numbers are subjective - without authority, YMMV.
My MBP benches at 139 with all tests enabled. 183 with the hard drive test turned off. This machine has a good chance of being able to keep up with Leopard and the next cat.
I've maxed out the ram, and upgraded the hard drives. None of my programs are running PPC code. Every program I use is specifically designed to run on Leopard (just bought the new SuperDuper today).
I did the Leopard upgrade after I cleaned up Tiger. Make sure that Activity Monitor says every process or program is running for your actual platform. In my case everything says Intel. Everything was backed up to 2 different drives (one bootable).
I had no problems with user accounts, and Time Machine has worked flawlessly.
The only real bug I've come across in Leopard has been the need for including my DNS info in the network settings because my Mail program was sending messages with a 30 second delay.
    I never get a beachball.

  • Firefox will not play videos. A green screen shows instead. Same sites work in IE. Problem just started this week. How can I fix this?

The sound works -- it's just that video is replaced by a solid green screen.

I found the problem, and I don't think it is with Firefox or Adobe. I have Radeon Graphics running on a Intel Core i7 computer and I was able to solve this problem by opening the Catalyst Control Center and clicking on one setting and applying.
Open your Catalyst Control Center (it may be an icon on your desktop, in the start menu, or accessed via right clicking the desktop and selecting "Graphics Properties") and click on the "power" icon. From there you select "Switchable Graphics", and there should be an area for "recent applications". If you do not see any recent applications, I would re-download the flash player, access a website that uses it, and then retry the above instructions. There should be a "button" to the right of the Flash Player Application and select it until it says "power saving" and select apply. I also tried using "high performance" as a setting and the green screen remained. I am using Catalyst Control Center version 2011.1205.2215.39827, and cannot say if the above instructions will work with any other version.
