No Program Monitor

I am using Pro 2 with Matrox and Windows XP. I haven't used this PC in awhile. I can't get the Program Monitor to come up in a new edit or one that was done a year ago. I have gone to the windows tab and press Program Monitor and nothing comes up. Everything else in the work space works fine. Any suggestions?

Welcome to the forums.
Either reset the workspace or choose a different workspace then go back to the edit workspace. Hopefully that will get the program monitor back.
If not then please provide these details to help us help you.
Cheers

  • CS4-How do I remove a split screen in the Program monitor window?

I have Pro CS4 on a vista 64 OS. I am using the Mainstream encoders and my Program monitor window switches to a split screen every time I play the timeline. When I stop the playback, the screen returns to normal full screen with the last frame showing. When I start the playback again, the screen splits into two screens squishing the actual playback window to the left part of the monitor window. Any Ideas? Thanks.

I found the solution by changing my quality settings (in the top right hand corner of the program display window) from "Automatic Quality" to "Highest Quality".
I am not sure why it affects the display in this manner, but it just works this way and it is repeatable.
I am working with 50 Mb MXF files from a Sony PDW900 HD camera.I use the Mainstream codecs to inport the files. I am using a Nvidia Quadro CX as a video card with the latest drivers. I first thought that the Mainstream codecs were affecting the display somehow, but then again, I do not remember changing these display settings. Thanks for the suggestions, I appreciate the response just the same...

  • Sluggish timeline and glitching/freezing program monitor in Premiere Pro CC 8.1

    Hi all,
I've recently switched from CS6 to the 2014 Adobe CC due to a student license expiring. I'm also somewhat new to r3d workflow so chances are I may be doing something wrong.
I've worked on one other project with a mix of r3d and DSLR footage in CS6, but this is my first time cutting with red footage in Premiere CC.
*Apologies in advance for the novel, but I figured I'd be as thorough as possible to hopefully help get this issue resolved for myself any anyone else who's experiencing this.*
I'm cutting a 9:30 "party mix" in a music video style edit. So far I've had several (seemingly random) issues and glitches, that have been making my life exceptionally difficult and this 10/30 deadline exceptionally scary.
I'm working with content that we captured using exclusively RED Epic Dragon, and Epic Mysterium cameras. We recorded with several different frame rates, with varying resolution, compression, and aspect ratios. Project was set in-camera to 23.976.
    Issue #1
I've created a nearly two hour, organized roll of sub-clip selects in a RED R3D 2K 23.976 16x9 timeline, in which i'll use to browse my raw media when sequencing on a timeline stacked directly below.
Often times when pulling clips from one timeline down to the other, the over-all responsiveness of the program will become ultra sluggish. Causing a clip (that's being dragged/placed) to lag heavily, maybe a couple seconds behind my cursor. This issue will often resolve itself after maybe 5 minutes or so, but makes fluid sequencing rather difficult.
    Issue #2
The other issue I'm having is a glitchy or completely unresponsive program monitor. Again this issue appears to be totally random, and seems to happen most when I'm deep into some really intense sequencing/ clip arrangement, and scrubbing quickly.
Usually a portion of a single clip (or sometimes a couple clips) will freeze up in the program monitor while I'm scrubbing over them on the timeline. This will sometimes cause them to freeze all together during playback as well as cause surrounding clips to lag a bit (maybe 4-8fps).
I'll scrub back over the problem area and sometimes get a solid green bar halfway through my image, usually right before the program monitor just reads solid black throughout the entire timeline. This issue is temporarily resolved by restarting the program (about every 15-30 minutes).
    Issue #3
As I'm scrubbing I'll also experience heavy glitching with both my image and the program monitor GUI itself. However, this issue typically wont affect playback.
I've uploaded a quick camera-phone video of this issue as it's a little tough to describe Program monitor glitch - YouTube
I know the timeline is un-rendered in this sample, (but this issue happens either way).
Two painstaking weeks later, I've finally completed the first pass.
Working on revisions now, and ultimately I'd like to copy paste the sequence into a 4K timeline for before After Effects work and export.
I tried pulling it into a 4K timeline (with playback set to 1/8 res) and the issues stated above got 10x worse.
Sticking to the 2K timeline for now (with playback at 1/4 res)
P.S. I'm also cutting a much simpler corporate project with 5DMKIII footage and having no real issues.
    As for my rig,
    I'm running Adobe Premiere CC 2014 v8.1
Freshly installed Windows 7 Professional SP1 PC Desktop
Freshly installed Samsung 1TB SSD running my OS and Adobe CC
    Intel Core i7-2600k CPU at 3.4GHz (8CPUs) - Watercooled
16GB Ram (3gb allocated for other programs)
    Nvidia GeForce GTX 570 4GB GDDR5 - 3.40.62 Drivers installed
Pulling media from 2x 3TB Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM drives, striped at RAID 0
    Thanks for reading!
    -Sam

So it seems to be behaving slightly better in "Software Only"
Though slightly less frequently, I'm still running into the issues stated above, mostly issue #2.
I also have a new problem to add to this thread as I'm starting to pull clips into After Effects.
First being that (again, seemingly random) dynamic-linked clips decide not to show up on the timeline in AE, and then seem to vanish from the program monitor in Premiere as well.
As you can see in the screenshots attached- After Effects see's the media itself from which the clip came from, however it won't show up in the monitor.
I'm also having issues where I'll render the Premiere project with the dynamic linked clips that DO work, and then as soon as I restart the program, those previews are gone and I have to re-render the the AE Linked comps.

  • Lines and title flashing across the program monitor and in final export

I'm seeing very thin lines flashing across the program monitor when playing a complex sequence with 7 video tracks. They draw at various angles and span the entire screen. There can be one or more showing at any time. They are colored and each line appears to be only one color, but different lines can be different colors. Some lines are solid, others are dashed. There is also a ghosty-white representation of one of my titles flashing around the screen for only a frame or two, then it flashes somewhere else.
    Sequences and Tracks:
Base Sequence: AVCHD with disolves and color correction
Next Sequence Layer: Base Sequence placed on tracks 1 and 2. Motion is applied to both tracks. LInearWipe and Opacity are applied to Track 2.
(This creates an image in the center of the screen with a reflection.)
Next Sequence Layer (1st track of the final 7): Animates Basic3D and Motion (position, scaling)
2nd, 3rd and 4th of the seven are just like the1st. So there are 4 video screens flying around with reflections and perspective. Kind of like the iTunes album art widget - screen flies in, goes center stage, then flies back.
Layers 5 to 7 are titles. They are also nested sequences having reflections and Basic3D, but their positions are not animated.
    My system:
    Phenom II x6 1055T
    8 Gb DDR3 1333
3 Drives 7200 rpm (one program, one preview/conforming, one video)
nVidia GeForce GTX 260 (3 fans attached)
3 Case fans plus the side is open - running very cool
    MSI 890GXM-G65 Mobo
    My Project:
Originated as a CS4 project, opened with CS5 and converted (did not import). Fixed all the title screwups, missing fonts, graphics, hooked up the off-line media etc etc. There are a couple of 1.5 hour nested AVCHD multi-camera sequences which look and play great. Then there are 2 of these monster sequences which are actually used as DVD menus and are about 44 seconds each. When I render these 7 layer menu sequences and play them back, these lines start flashing across the screen.
Of course the GTX 260 has the GPU unlocked and that works great for the 1.5 hour programs. But if I attempt to render the 44 second monsters Premier stops responding and I have to EndTask it (all CPUs drop to idle while not responding). These monster sequences might test the power of the Quadro CX. So when I work with the menu sequences, I set Premiere to use software GPU and not MPE. Then I can render (2 hours render time to preview 44 seconds with six cores at near 100%). So it does render, slowly.
I'm exporting an mpeg2 file now and will let you know if the lines show up in the final rendering. I can see the lines showing up on the MediaEncoder's small preview screen as it renders. Doesn't give me comfort.
OK worst case scenario. The lines ARE in the final mpeg2 file. Makes the file unusable garbage...
Is anyone else seeing flashing lines and titles?
Here's a link to a still from the export to illustrate the artifacts.(face and name were blanked out by me)
    http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/5051/premierecs5lineandtitle.jpg
    Thanks

The crop workaround was successful for removing the lines - worked great. There was the issue of the ghost text which you can see in the screenshot link provided above. This was not removed by crop. Crop removed the lines, but not the ghost. Thankfully, the 4 point garbage mask did work on the ghost and I was able to eliminate it. I had to apply the garbage mask on the sequence where Basic3D was applied not its parent sequence where VerticalFlip was used. The most important thing is that I've successfully migrated this CS4 project to CS5 and can now take advantage of 64bit processing (more RAM) to tame the beast. I'm using this sequence as a menu for a series of DVDs so my time expended will pay me back again and again.
The asset generating the ghost was built like this...
In the titler: Text was placed over a logo (.tiff file for logo and it was scaled and moved)
Base Sequence: Title was brought to two, stacked tracks. VerticalFlip, and LinearWipe were applied to one which was then moved to look like a reflection of the other
Next Sequence: Layed the Base Sequence down. Applied Basic 3D and moved it's XY position. (This is where I applied the GarbageMask to remove the ghost)
I tried separating the logo from the text thinking that the logo feature of the titler might be the problem. So I used a separate video track and pulled in the .tiff file directly. It didn't eliminate the ghost. Applying the GarbageMask to the base sequence also didn't help. It was only after Basic3D was applied that the ghost would appear. And since I have Basic3D applied to other reflected text-only layers which do not exhibit the ghost artifact, the bug has something to do with the text/graphic combination with VerticalFlip and Basic3D.
To top it all off, I can no longer recreate the problem. I've turned off the garbage mask and it's not showing up. While I was testing, the ghost was easy to recreate, but now I can't do it. So I don't appear to be able to drill down deeper. Perhaps it will come back at some point and I can test it further and update this thread.

  • Why does my video clip show in the program monitor only when it is playing (the program monitor is blank otherwise)?

I am using WIndows 7 64 bit, and the most recent version of Premiere Pro CC on an I7 machine with 8GB of memory.  I have imported a HD .mov clip and placed it on the timeline.  When I press 'Play', it shows in the Program Monitor window.  When I stop the playing, the window goes blank.  I have rendered the clip (it has a yellow bar above it).  Even after rendering, the yellow bar remains and the sequence only displays when it is playing.  The source monitor has the same behavior.
Not being able to see where I am in a clip is making editing very difficult.  I have used Premiere Elements for five years, I have taken the Lynda.com course, so I have some familiarity with the program that suggests that the frame at the point of the CTI should show in the program and source monitors.
What do I need to do to be able to see the frame in the monitors when it isn't playing?
Update:  I spent 35 minutes with Tushar in a technical support chat (case number: 0186148124), during which time we deleted the contents of the Media cache folder in C:/Users/Your User Account/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Common file (after using task manager to close coresync32.exe and creativecloud32.exe) and renamed both the Adobe folder and the 8.0 folder in Documents/Adobe/Premiere Pro/8.0.  This didn't get it, but was necessary for the next step:
Going to the File menu, Project Settings, and selecting 'General Settings', Tushar had me change the Renderer to Mercury Playback Engine Software Only (I don't have a GPU accelerator video card yet).  I received a warning that all previews would be deleted, which I accepted.  That brought the image back to the Program Monitor.
I've posted this for anyone who may experience a similar challenge in the future.  Despite a lot of Google searching before I contacted Tech Support, I didn't find anything even close to the description of the problem.  I hope this provides that source for future searchers.
    Jeff

Thanks, Ann.  As I mentioned in my post, Tushar correctly pointed out that, without a GPU accelerated card (which I don't have - mine is a piece of junk which I will be replacing with a compatible one soon) you must use the software only settings.  I had changed my project over to the 'software only' setting, and I still had the problem.  The value Tushar added was the procedure for clearing the cache.
What I did originally was a newbie error, no argument.  I posted it here for others who may fall in the same hole.  Your reply confirms that, without a GPU accelerated card, use the software only settings (sounds so obvious, yet I missed it.....).

  • Source File shows White Screen in Source + Program Monitor

    Hello,
I'm having an issue with only one of three media files in my Premiere Pro CS6 project.
When I try to preview this one video file in the Source Monitor, it shows only a white screen, and I can only move the playhead to the beginning and end of the file. I then plopped the clip into the sequence to see if rendering it would give me better luck in the Program Monitor, yet to no avail. The file supposedly successfully rendered, yet when I open the subsequently created "Preview" file in VLC, the entire clip is completely white for its entire duration. (I think it's interesting to note that VLC plays the source file correctly, and that this footage has been successfully used in a separate project in Final Cut after converted to ProRes with Compressor.)
I've opened the file with GSpot to make sure I had the Codec installed, yet GSpot doesn't list any Codec information for this file. It only lists Container information.
(Screen shot of GSpot with white-screen issue in the background)
My Video Card drivers are up to date, taken directly from the chipset's manufacturer's website.
Codec: (See post below for Media Info dump)
Premiere Pro version 6.0.3 (001 (MC: 264587)), installed in English.
Sequence Settings: DVCPROHD 1080i50 default settings (framerate changed to 50FPS)

53.2GB of free space on the SSD all of the media files, the operating system, the Adobe Premiere installation, and scratch disk is located.
I'm unsure of the camera used to record this footage.
Thanks for reading my post, and let me know if you need any more information.

  • Premiere CC 2014.2 won't play source/program monitor

I recently installed Adobe Premiere CC 2014.2, and since then no video plays within it, or the source and monitor or the program monitor. I'm on a Dell Inspiron notebook 2.1gh i7, 8GB memory, Intel HD Graphics 4000, ATI Radeon HD 7700m. • Premiere Pro CC - Program Monitor shows only black screen

    Hi All,
I am hoping someone out there can help me (and I am sure many others) with this problem.
I was using Premiere Pro CS6 and was half way through a project when I upgraded to Premiere Pro CC. This was fine and I finished the project, however soon after this when I re-entered Premiere Pro CC in order to make some final adjustments and tweaks, the program monitor appeared to be black. I can see nothing but black on the program monitor window. When I play the project, the sound works just fine, but I cannot see anything in the program monitor.
Please see the discussion linked here (http://forums.adobe.com/message/5487954) for more information on this issue. I am hoping to relight the fire on this and get some answers for everyone having this issue. It has rendered my Permiere Pro useless right now. I cannot even start new projects as it has the same problem.
NOTE: I have tried rolling back to CS6 but this does not work and I found out from this forum that rolling back versions was never possible. I have also tried reinstalling PP CC but that also did not solve the problem.
I hope someone can help out here.
    Thank you!

    Hi Kevin,
I am up to date on all Adobe Applications according to the Creative Cloud Manager.  However when  I check the "About" section of my installation of Premiere Pro, it says v7.0, not 7.0.1...
    I am on a Windows 7 machine 64 bit.
I did a full udate of all Adobe updates today and restarted my system, but still when I open my project, the program monitor is black.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks again,
    John

  • How do I output the program monitor from Premiere Elements 13 to an external TV monitor?

I can find information about dual monitor set ups, but is it possible to output the program monitor only to an external monitor?
    If so, what is needed?
I'm using PE`3 on a PC with Windows 7  64 bit  with an NVIDIA Quadro NVS 290.
    Thanks

    bobj
Have not found a way, but....
Do you have a HDMI cable and does your computer and TV each have a HDMI port.
The TImeline panel appears to be the only undockable panel in the Premiere Elements 13/13.1 Expert workspace area (Window Menu/Dual Monitor)
The best I can do is to make a HDMI connection between the HDMI ports of my computer and TV, with display at Duplicate or Extend. That does not appear to be what you seek.
The other part of all this is that Premiere Elements used to have a "Playback Settings" in Project Settings and accessed from
right clicking the Edit area monitor. That is no longer to be found in 13.1, even in a grayed out state. And, for me, the Playback Settings could not be made visible
when attaching a 3rd party device.
In the days of Premiere Elements 11, the answer to your question might have been as described in the following
Adobe Premiere Elements 11 * Previewing movies
Until proven otherwise, I am thinking that it cannot be done in Premiere Elements 13/13.1. But, I am not at a stage where I would put a never and always stamp on this.

  • Program Monitor looks like it changed ratio

I started in 1920x1080, but after editing videos and saving a few times I looked up and the program monitor looks something like 1920x800!  Any suggestions? I made no changes and cannot seem to find a way to display 1920x1080 again.  Thank you all for the help.

The Program Monitor reflects the Sequence.

  • Program monitor constantly freezing/stalling when playing dynamically linked After Effects comps

I'm having program monitor issues when I try to play dynamically linked After Effects comps from my Premiere timeline. I realize it's expected to have jerky playback since After Effects comps are memory and CPU intense, but it doesn't seem normal for these things to happen:
Sometimes during playback, the program monitor completely freezes while audio continues to play and the CTI continues to move along timeline. When this happens, there's no way to stop the playback at all using mouse or keyboard... so I'm forced to just quit Premiere and re-open project.
Program monitor can also freeze when I place the CTI on top of the After Effects comp. Sometimes if I wait a minute, the screen could update and eventually display the After Effects comp.
I'm unable to render effects on the Premiere timeline because it just hangs at "Rendering frame 0" and never advances forward.
There's nothing special about the After Effects comp I'm linked to... it could just be regular text that I animated using ease keyframes and motion blur.
I originally thought it was related to GPU settings but it doesn't make a difference if I set After Effects to use CPU instead of GPU or set Premiere's Mercury Playback engine to software, CUDA, or openGL. I even have the latest CUDA drivers installed on my Mac. But I must mention that this issue got significanly worst after updating to OSX 10.9 Mavericks.
    Here's my system details:
    OSX 10.9 Mavericks
    Premiere 7.0.1 (105)
After Effects 12.0.1.7 (I installed the OS X Mavericks crash update fix)
The most prevalent error messages displayed in the OSX console is:
Adobe Premiere Pro CC[402]: dynamic_cast error 1: Both of the following type_info's should have public visibility.  At least one of them is hidden. N5dvaui2ui8MessageTIKNS0_7UI_NodeEEE, N5dvaui8controls23UI_PictureSupplyMessageE.
Here's a few that are less common:

I think I found the problem... OSX Mavericks introduced a power saving feature called App Nap that basically slows down an app that appears to be doing nothing or is minimized in the background.
So essentually when I try to display an After Effects dynamically linked comp via my Premiere timeline, it freezes because OSX put After Effects to sleep.
To fix this, I had to disable the App Nap feature on After Effects. Now everything is performing back at pre-Mavericks levels (which is about 10% stalling playback issues vs 90% stalling). I also noticed that all of the console errors went away.
To disable App Nap in OSX...
    Go to your Applications folder
Expand the After Effects CC folder
Right-click on "Adobe After Effects CC.app" and select Get Info
Add a checkmark beside "Prevent App Nap"
    Restart the application
I also did this with all my Adobe apps just to be safe.
    Hope this helps

  • Selecting (and resizing, for example) a layer under the top layer via the Program Monitor

    Hello all.
    Using CS5
I am in the timeline and have selected layer 1 which is a video layer
Layer 2 is a title layer.
I want to manually resize layer 1, via the Program Monitor.
But when I go to the Program Monitor and select it Layer 2 (the title layer) becomes selected, preventing me from selecting and manually resizing/repositioning Layer 1.
The above example is a simplified version of what I usually find myself doing.  Usually I have many layers above a layer that I want to resize or reposition (or do something else) but when I try to resize or repositon via the program monitor I am only able to manipulate the top layer.
Any suggestions, other than locking every layer other than what I want to resize etc .?
    Thanks
    Rowby

    Hi Bill,
No they are separate orginal tracks.
Is there a way to "select" a layer below the top layer via the Progam Monitor -- and perform modifications on that lower level -- such a manually resizing on the Program Monitor.  I find if I want to do it via the Program  Monitor I have to temporarily lock the top layer.
And if I have lots of layers above the layer I want to manually resize, I have to lock all of the layers above that layer so I don't start moving around (for example a title layer which might be the top layer of the sequence) in order to manually resize via the Program Monitor.
I know (for example) in the case of scaling or repositioning a layer I could do it via the effects control panel, but I often want to do it via the Program Monitor.

  • Black Bars in Program Monitor - Why?

Todd Kopriva, from Adobe, has just done a nice TUTORIAL, addressing "black bars," around the image in the Program Monitor. Todd uses PrPro CS 5.5 for his demo, but nearly everything, save a few mechanical differences, will apply to other versions of PrPro, and also PrE. The concept is exactly the same, really for almost any NLE (Non Linear Editor) program. If you get into the mechanics, and realize that you cannot find something that Todd mentions, it's either not in your version of Premiere (like Sequences in PrE - there, think about Project Presets instead), or is located elsewhere, and you need to consult your program's Help File.
For a little more info on PAR (Pixel Aspect Ratio), that Todd touches on, see this ARTICLE.
Remember, some of the mechanics might be different in your version of Premiere, but the concept is exactly the same.
Hope that this explains those black bars, where they came from and how to address them.

As Jim's answer indicates, some codecs enforce specific dimensions. Most relevant here is the fact that codecs intended for television are strictly constrained to the sizes for television standards. You have chosen an NTSC (National Televison Standards Council) codec in the Video Codec menu, which gives a rather strong hint that this is one such constrained codec.

  • Source monitor and program monitor boxes will not display video in full only half

I have adobe premiere pro cs6 and source monitor and program monitor boxes will not display video in full only half.  So the top half of both monitors are black and the bottom half is where the video displays.  But you can see that the video is missing the top part.  Like people's heads are cut off and can only see body.  How can i fix this so premiere pro cs6 will use the full monitors boxes to display my video?

This is a known issue with a recent Windows update.

  • How do I add a monitor dedicated to program monitor

I have a large high def program monitor I used to use with Media 100.  Is there a way I can use that to monitor the Premiere Pro desktop program monitor full time (rather than going to full screen and back to "normal?"  Mac Pro. 10.8.5  Premiere Pro.  Must be a way but can't find it in the manual?  (Just made the switch from Media 100 Suite to Premiere pro and finding my way.  Great program!)
    Many thanks.

My set up is exactly like that ( but on a PC Windows) Nvidia Card  CC2014xx ( but this has worked since CS5 at least)
Application GUI all on one monitor ..second monitor is full screen HD ( that reflects the Program Monitor in the GUI). No Menu bar or navigation controls on this monitor.
FWIW - I use the Default Edit Workspace .
I just have my graphics card set up (Nvidia Driver) in Windows to acknowledge two Monitors identified as 1 and 2  (note both monitors are HD Monitors so no scaling involved)
In Premiere Preferences> Playback  I simply select the Monitors (check boxes) especially Monitor #2
    That's it.
Note .  I do not drag application panes anywhere out of Default Workspaces. It is saved a s a Custom Workspace though.
This setup always plays out a full screen Monitor on #2.
If I use the "tilde" shortcut. on any panes....I get a full screen as well on #1
I can not drag any application windows onto #2.  They will disappear behind the full screen and one has to turn off Monitor 2 in the Playback Prefs to see them again and return them to #1.

  • CS4 Premiere Pro Clips Won't Play in Source Monitor/Program Monitor

I can't get clips to play in source monitor/program monitor/preview pane in Pr Pro.  I have spent hours looking through the forums to try and find a fix and I have troubleshot the following.....
    1. Codecs are not broken... or seem to be working according to Sherlock
    2. Video and audio drivers up to date
    3. Unistalled and re-install Pr Pro then updated via updater
    Here is the funny thing...
In Encore, OnLocation, and other Suite program the play functionality works just fine....the only one it doesn't is Pr Pro.
    Question:
Is the source code to playback video in Pr different then the other suite programs or am I just making a trivial mistake in Pr?
Sorry for the novice question but I am about to give up and have no where to turn.
    Hardware Specs
    CPU 3.6 GHz
    HD 1TB 7200 RPM
RAM 2 MB (is this my issue?)
    Video: Open GL

    Number of issues here:
    1. Your system does not meet minimum requirements.
    2. Your CPU, disks, memory are not enough for anything other than DV.
    3. What video camera was used with what codec on what OS with which version of PR. etc.
Some suggestions... and answer at least the 16 questions at the end of the Wiki article.
