No progress bar on start up...

In the last few days I've noticed there is no boot up progress bar. It starts up with the gray screen with the apple logo, then goes to a blue screen for a few moments before my desktop shows up. I seem to recall there being a OSX progress bar that used to pop up over the blue screen. Am I imagining things? And is this something that I need to be concerned about that is no longer appearing? (running 10.5.2)

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
I just restarted, and my MBP starts up exactly as you describe. So I think that is normal for Leopard. My iBook, running Tiger, does have a progress bar. That's probably what you remember. I seem to think there were two progress bars for Panther, one for Starting Mac OS X and another one for the firewall.

  • Progress bar on start up doesn't finish

    When I log onto my MacBook Pro after I enter my password a progress bar appears which starts to move across but only goes about 20% of the way before the desktop appears. I have heard that there has been a problem with automatic updates which don't fully install and this could be a symptom of that. Unfortunately I now get a problem where the Desktop seems to freeze and I can't select items with the trackpad. I'm not sure if the two are linked or just a coincidence.

    That is normal. If you get to the Desktop and all is working you don't have a problem. But if you do have a problem, then you need to do this:
    Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
         Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
         COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
         computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
         screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
    When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
    Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
                because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
    Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
    Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
                because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Grey progress bar on start, then shut down.

    So I have a 27" iMac (mid 2011 I think, but not 100% sure) that's unhealthy.
    My wife had been using the machine for a few weeks.  At some point it rebooted, and when it did, it got stuck at what looks possibly like a firmware update screen?
    When it powers on I get the normal chime, followed by grey screen, followed by the Apple logo, followed by a progress bar.
    The progress bar runs until it gets about 1/16th of the way across the screen, then powers off.
    - I've reset PRAM/NVRAM and SMC.  I know NVRAM was reset because on next boot the screen resolution and default volume changed.
    - It doesn't allow be to boot off other drives/volumes (option on start or C), and trying to start in single, verbose, or safe mode doesn't seem to do anything.  Or in Recovery mode.
    - If I try to start in target disk mode (hold T on start) it will enter that mode.  If I try to start hardware diag mode, it tries, but if this system came with a hardware test disc, I don't have it anymore.  Then it just proceeds to try booting again.
    I'm assuming it's trying to do an EFI update, but that's failing for some reason.  I've read that doing a firmware restore will help, but Apple doesn't seem to produce firmware restore disks anymore?  I definitely don't see one available for download.
    Any thoughts?

    Do you have another Mac with Firewire to look at the iMac Drive or try to Repair it when it's in t mode?

  • Help - Grey wheel with progress bar on start up and then Macbook Pro turns of.

    So i recently bought a Macbook Pro 13 inch (the lower end). While doing my research i found the smartest thing to have a relatively fast macbook was to increase the ram. I bought http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148345 and installed it in my macbook pro. After starting up the macbook, i got to my login screen. However, everytime the computer would try to start up to my account, i would get a blue screen and then be brough back to my login page for the account. I assumed that the RAM was not fitted properly since my research indicated that it was most likely the problem. I re-installed the RAM sticks with more force but to no avail. Then i even switched the RAM sticks while installing to make sure that either one of my new RAM chips was not faulty but after a while, my MBP refuses to start up. I get the grey apple logo, with a spinning wheel and progress bar. The bar goes a quarter length before the laptop shuts off. I then put it in the original RAM sticks, but the same problem. Apple logo, spinning wheel, progress bar and then powers off. Any suggestions or thoughts as to what may have happened? Thank you!

    Last night the electricity went out and my power surge protector was not working so my iMac just force shut downed.
    So, when the electricity came back i turned on my Mac but it is *Stuck in the Startup/Boot Screen with a Grey Apple Logo,a Empty Progress Bar with stays for 1 or 2 minutes and a small Spinning Wheel which would Spin Forver! I Have tried the SMC and Pram reset but no use, i have also tried to insert my OS X Lion 10.7 Installation disk and it would not load if i hold the C Key in the Startup, I Have Managed to go to Disk Utility Through "Recovery HD"  but the Volume "Macintosh HD" is Greyed out and Unmounted and i cannot repair it. There are some files that i'd like to Recover if there is a way to fix it without deleting files.
    **PLEASE HELP ME FIX THIS!**

    iMac 21.5 Inch i think from Mid 2010,
    OS X Lion installed maybe 10.7.2 or 10.7.3 (im not sure)

  • Progress Bar/Fast Start

    I exported a hyperlink only movie out of Keynote 3. I then inserted into my webpage. If a person clicks on the first hyperlink to go to the next slide it only goes a few frames and then freezes. There is not enough information buffered to move it along.
    What I would like is to have some kind of download progress bar that shows up below the QuickTime so people know to wait. However, I don't want to lose the hyperlinks.
    You can see it at: www.youbelong.net > journal information > instructions
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hey Granny, I love your apples.
    You could try opening your movie in QuickTime Player (Pro) and then going to the Window menu, Show Movie Properties.
    Click on the Video track to select it and then click on the "Other Settings" button in the gray area below. Check the boxes for "Preload this track" and "Cache (hint)". Repeat for the Sprite track (not sure that that's necessary though) and then save the movie...

  • URGENT : Progress Bar component start showing too late

    I'm using the ProgressBar component in a large movie
    containing a lot of objects, images ecc ...
    In the first frame i've put a ProgressBar component managed
    by the following ActionScript code :
    stop();
    listener = {path:this};
    listener.complete = function()
    this.path.play();
    pr_main.mode = "polled";
    pr_main.source = _root;
    pr_main.addEventListener("complete", listener);
    where pr_main is the instance name of the ProgressBar.
    Well, when i try to simulate Download, i have to wait like
    4-5 seconds for the bar to appear and when it happens, the bar
    shows that the loading is already at about 50%, and after it starts
    to work correctly.
    Why i'm experiencing this behaviour ?
    Thanx to all

    >>In the first frame i've put a ProgressBar component
    That's the problem. To use the component is has to first
    fully load.

  • Received a warning about a virus and a green progress bar started a download

    ''Duplicate post, continue here - [/questions/764207]''
    Hello. I was on a website the other day and all of a sudden there was a warning that came down from the top of the browser. It was a grey warning box. Said something like your computer has a virus or is infected, etc. and will be checked for the virus. I could click on "ok" or "cancel". I clicked cancel but there was a green progress bar that started to show that a download was taking place. I forced quit right away but when I opened firefox it gave me the webpage again with the warning. I hit cancel again and the same thing started to happen (showed a download in progress with a green progress bar on left side of screen). I immediately closed all the firefox windows I had open. When I clicked on firefox again everything was fine. The new window went to the apple website page and everything seems to be working fine. I use a mac. Has anyone else gotten this warning before? And should I be worried that my computer was infected by a virus? I don't have an anti virus installed on my computer. With mac I always just keep the security updates up to date and I'm usually fine. I just want to make sure my computer didn't just get a virus. Thanks for the help!

    Thank you so much for your post. I really appreciate your answer!
    Are you able to suggest any sites that are safe to download free antivirus programs for Mac? I have heard that sometimes those programs, like Norton for Mac, can significantly slow down the computer and cause other issues. Is this true? If so, is it recommended to install a program like Norton, test for viruses, and then uninstall?
    Thanks again for your help!

  • IMac 24 won't start up, grey screen with progress bar, then shuts off

    My computer froze all my applications yesterday. When I went to restart it a grey screen came up with the progress bar at the bottom. It would advance about 1/3 and then the progress bar would start over. It would advance about 1/3 again then the computer shuts off. It does the same thing trying to start it up in safe mode. I started it with my snow leopard disk and it will allow me to restore the computer with time machine (which we have), but I wasn't sure if I should try something else before that. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

    Hello:
    I would try restoring as an approach to eliminating some software glitch. However, you might also have a hardware problem (not good news).

  • PROGRESS BAR , URGENT ....

    I have a backend process which takes 15 minuites to complete. Now when the user starts the process, I want to show in the front end form a progress bar . So as soon as the user hits the button to start the process, the progress bar will start and when the process will complete it ll complete. Any one knows how to achieve this ?
    A sample code is appreciated.
    Thanx
    Feroz

    I found a way to display a progress bar.
    I draw a red filled rectangle (named for example PROGRESS_BAR on the canevas). For example set the width of this rectangle to 200. And I draw also an empty rectangle to show the border of the first one
    Now calculate the number of iterations you make during your process : for example if you loop on the records of a table, count the number of records.
    Let's say you have n = 1000 iterations
    and the size of the rectangle is length = 200
    DECLARE
    n_cpt NUMBER := 0; -- loop counter
    n_step NUMBER;
    BEGIN
    -- At the beginning of the process, make the rectangle visible :
    set_item_property('PROGRESS_BAR', DISPLAYED, PROPERTY_TRUE);
    -- set the size to zero
    set_item_property('PROGRESS_BAR', WIDTH,0);
    -- for example if you want to refresh
    -- the progress bar by 5%
    n_step := n * 0.05;
    -- you will refresh after 1000 * 0.05 = 50 -- loops
    LOOP
    -- test if the occurrence can by divided
    -- by n_step
    IF (n / n_step ) = ROUND( n /n_step) THEN
    set_item_property('PROGRESS_BAR', WIDTH,
    n / n_step * 200 * 0.05);
    -- for example if n = 500 you will have
    -- a width of 500 / 50 *200 * 0.05 = 100
    -- it's the half of the initial width
    -- of 200 and shows the user that you
    -- have processed half of the records
    END IF;
    -- increment loop counter
    n := n +1;
    ..... rest of your code
    END LOOP;
    message('end of process');
    -- hide the progress bar
    set_item_property('PROGRESS_BAR', DISPLAYED, PROPERTY_FALSE);
    END;

  • Problem installating Snow Leopard on old Macbook Pro with Intel Core 2 Duo. After creating partition on internal hard disk (Extended Journaled), installation starts but stops at half of the progress bar. Screen asking Restart appears.

    Hello:
    I have tried installing Snow Leopard via the installation disc on a Macbook Pro (2007) with an Intel Core 2 Duo, but I the installation has failed more than 5 times.
    I have first formatted and partitioned the internal hard disk with Mac Os Extended Journal format.
    Once the installation starts, it starts without a problem unti lthe progress bar gest until half completed then a screen asking for a Computer Restart shows up.
    It asks to press the power button for some time until it the computer shuts down and then, press again to turn it on.
    Once turned on, the installation disc gets readed, the installation screen appears again and asks again to start the whole installation process form the beginning.

    Then you have a Hardware Problem.
    Your system is Crashing part way through the install and Re-Booting because of the crash.
    Could be the drive itself or it could be some other hardware part in your system. Like the RAM.
    To check if it is the internal drive connect an External drive to the system by USB and do the install on that external. If the install completes then it more then likely the drive is bad. If it crashes again then it is more then likely some other piece of hardware in your system.

  • Firmware update progress bar appears and computer won't start up

    Hi,
    I am on OS X 10.6 (the latest developer build, whose build number I can't remember and can't look up because my computer won't start up) and this morning when I tried to start up my computer, it chimed, the apple appeared but then a grey progress bar (like the one that appears during a firmware update) appeared at the bottom of the screen along with the customary spinner. This progress bar didn't update and after 10-ish seconds, it disappeared and left just the spinner. I left the computer in this state for 4 hours and nothing happened. It still starts up in single user mode (but I can't seem to get Open Firmware mode to load) and it starts Windows XP on another partition of my main HD.
    When I start it in verbose mode, it says that my catalog B-tree has keys out of order and it is unable to repair them. Also, I get an error message from launchctl: "Bug: launchctl.c:2033 (23930):17: auditquickstart() == 0". Then later on it tells me to convert a few system plist files to launchd (all in the /etc/mach_init.d/ folder). The very last line says "launch_msg(): Socket is not connected".
    I would rather not re-install the system, but if I have to, I guess I will. I appreciate any light that anyone can shed on this problem.
    Thanks,
    Kyle

    Yes, they (the third-party utilities) both come on bootable DVD's. As I mentioned, since Snow Leopard was just released in its final version, the developers may be in the process of releasing updates.
    Your situation is likely to be a case where the data corruption issue already existed before installing Snow Leopard, and the installation process made the problem more apparent (because something critical was installed where it was affected by the data issue).
    It is a good idea to run +Repair Disk+ in Disk Utility on the startup volume before installing a major system update. Actually, I do it before any system-level update.
    You should also have a backup (at least of your personal data if not the entire volume), in case something bad happens during a major system upgrade. If you were using Time Machine, the easiest recovery would be to reformat the internal drive and use the Time Machine complete volume restore utility to restore the volume back to the date/time state just before you installed Snow Leopard. Then, after restarting from that restored volume to make sure everything is working, start up from the Snow Leopard installation disc, run Disk Utility and use +Repair Disk+ (just to be sure), and run the upgrade to Snow Leopard again.
    If you have a backup of at least your personal data, you may want to reformat the internal drive, install Snow Leopard and bundled apps, install your third-party apps from their original sources, update everything that needs updating, and restore your personal data.
    If you don't have a backup, the best bet is to try either DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro. DiskWarrior is very specialized into repairing this type of data problem. TechTool Pro has similar capability, but it is a more general tool with other features.
