No PSD thumbnails in Elements 12

Since I upgraded from 11 I've lost the ability to see the PSD thumbnails in either Organizer or Editor. Help.

In your Folder Options under View, do you have Always show icons, never thumbnails checked?
What is the other file type that does seem to have a thumbnail?
Is that in the File>Open dialog in the photoshop elements 12 editor?

  • PSD Thumbnails in Windows 7, SOME SHOW UP!?!!

If someone could help me with this, I'd be ever so grateful!
With Windows Vista and Windows 7 now, I do not get thumbnail previews of the .psd files when viewing the files in the standard windows.  I've come to accept this.  But, when I upgraded to Photoshop CS5 and Bridge CS5 (and Elements 9 if that matters), SOME of the .psd thumbnails show up in Windows 7 and others do not...and I have no idea why some do and others don't and it's driving me crazy!  Please, does anyone know what's happening, why some are showing up?  I will attached a screen shot below.  Thank you! (Note: I haven't added any extra software or third-party software to make this happen.)

Might be interesting to list the codecs you have installed to see if any could be interpreting the PSD format...
There's a good tool for doing that called AutoRuns and it's available here:  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902
I'm not sure exactly where to tell you to look, but with the FastPictureViewer Codec Pack I see all the entries as decoders in the Everything tab, under a couple of Class IDs with Instance subkeys...

  • PSD Files black - Elements - 6

    Hi,
I have been working with Elements - 6 and now have "saved as" PSD files showing as black in a storage folder.  In the past they did appear as a contact size image file - - viewable.
When clicking on the black PSD file it will open into Photoshop Elements - 6 and can be processed normally.  When processing is complete and the image is "saved as" a jpg in a storage folder it is viewable as a contact size image.
I may have changed a setting inadvertantly that has caused this problem.  Can someone advise me how I can get my PDS images to be "saved as"  a viewable contact image size file.
    Thanks Bob

    John R. Ellis,
As a new participant on the Adobe Elements Forum I really appreciate your response to my posting.
I was unaware that Adobe no longer supports PSD files in Windows Explorer.   In the past they have been very convenient.  But I have to tell you - - I am still getting viewable PSD thumbnails in the horizontal format??
My copy of Elements - 6 was purchased from a local retailer about a year ago - - and I have no third-party add-ons .  Could Adobe / Windows be providing some minimal support for the horizontal image format and not the vertical (which seems odd) or might this just be an Abobe production anomaly?
    Thanks again,
    Bob

  • In CS5, Win7...go to File, then Open...do you see .PSD thumbnails with preview images?

In CS5, Win7...go to File, then Open...do you see .PSD thumbnails with preview images?
In all other versions of Photoshop, I can see a preview of the image, even .psd files, but with CS5 now, I just see the PSD icons...this again, is when you go to File, then Open...  Anyone else see this?  In Elements 9, I see the preview thumbnail icon, not generic, same with CS3 and Elements 7, but not with CS5?

Well, I was thinking if others tried on their Win7 system, they could let me know if they get the same result or different...so by comparison I could see if I had an issue with my software, such as if it were standard...  However, I did figure it out...  It's a 32-bit vs. 64-bit difference.  Elements 9 is a 32-bit software, and so is CS5 32-bit of course....so both of those softwares show .psd thumbnails in the File, Open view...but the 64-bit does not...in Win7 64-bit...in case anyone else is wondering...

  • Is there a way to view psd thumbnails in Windows 8?

Is there a way to view psd thumbnails in Windows 8 without downloading third-party software?

No there is no way to do this in Windows 8. If you do not want to pay for a codec, here is a cost free alternative.

  • How to show psd thumbnails in windows 8?

My psd files are only shown as icons rather than thumbnails in windows 8 explorer.  How cane I change this please?

You would need a third-party codec such as Ardfrey's.

    or FPV
FastPictureViewer Codec Pack: PSD, CR2, NEF, DNG RAW codecs (and more) for Windows 8.x Desktop, Windows 7, Windows Vista…
MS really does not support PSD thumbnails.

  • How Do I Delete Disconnected Thumbnails in Elements 11

How do I delete disconnected thumbnails in Elements 11?
In previous versions, I could easily do this using Reconnect All Missing Files, but Reconnect no longer has an option to delete thumbnails, that I can see.

MSExplorer wrote:.Why is Elements creating these thumbnails in the first place?
Just compare your catalog to the physical catalog book you get for an art museum : you have all sorts of information about the paintings, their authors, descriptions, indexes... and you are shown a small 'thumbnail' for each painting. That is to enable quick identification of the paintings.
In a catalog, each thumbnail is a very small reduction of the original. All those thumbnails are stored in the catalog folder itself, in a file named thumbs.5.cache.
    Now, about 'disconnected' files.
There is some ambiguity here : 'disconnected files' are media files for which the path stored in the database is wrong. The reason is generally because the media file has been moved, renamed or deleted. There is still the old path in the database, but it is no longer valid.
For 'offline' media, that means that the physical drive is disconnected, but the paths stored in the database (catalog) are still correct. You simply have to plug in your external media to give the organizer or editor access to the real media file.

  • Viewing PSD thumbnails in a directory

I'm using Photoshop CS 4. When viewing PSD file thumbnails ina directory I cannopt see the actual image - just a PSD label.  Is this functioning correctly? Why can't I see a PSD thumbnail in Photoshop?

Adobe stopped shipping the dlls that showed PSD thumbnails in the CS3 time frame. IMO the best solution is to buy and install FastPictureViewer codec. Not onle will you get thumbnails for PSD files you will also get thumbnails for many RAW image formats.
If you also have or had CS2 installed you may still have the two DLL on you machine aiicon.dll and psicon.dll they would be in "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Shell". If they are there you need to also have some registry entries tor them.

  • PSD Thumbnails and Windows

After installing a PSD Thumbnail viewer for Win7 explorer, some Photoshop files thumbnails are viewable in Windows Explorer, while others are still showing a PSD Icon for the Photoshop image in Windows explorer, any ideas?

This is just a guess but possibly the previews show for any PSD  that has no layers.  If it has layers only the icon will show.  In Photoshop go to PREFERENCES> FILE HANDLING.  By "Maximize PSD File Compatibility", in drop down select ALWAYS.  This saves a flattened version with the layers which usually can be read by some file browsers.  Hope this works.

  • Thumbnails in Elements 6 Look Slightly Fuzzy

I use Elements 6 and have noticed my Organizer thumbnails look slightly fuzzy when veiwed as a thumbnail and even when I double click on a thumbnail it still looks slightly fuzzy or not very sharp in Organizer. When I view my thumbnails in "Windows Photo Gallery" the pictures look very sharp. The pictures also look sharp when viewed in Elements Editor. Can anyone expalin how to get sharp thumbnails in Elements 6 or what I might be doing wrong? Thanks.....

I just did a comparison of Windows Live Photo Gallery (the updated version that you need to download) and PSE 7.  It seems that the relative sharpness of thumbnails varies as you change thumbnail sizes, and that sometimes WLPG was sharper and sometimes PSE 7 sharper.   If you have a blatant example of Photo Gallery looking much sharper, perhaps you could upload a screen shot of both at www.pixentral.com and post the URL here.
An educated guess: I think that WLPG precomputes and stores 4 different thumbnail sizes (32, 96, 256, and 1024 pixels wide), and I'm not sure, but PSE may do the same. But if they have different stored sizes, then it's possible that at some actual thumbnail sizes, one will look sharper than the other.

  • Free PSD Thumbnail reviewer for win 7 explorer

    Hi,
    I have CS5 and use Win7- Ultimate-64bit.
What is the free approache to preview PSD files' thumbnails in windows explorer?
    Thanks . . .

    Google is your friend.
There seem to be plenty of options, lots of them not needing commercial extra software. Many of them are hacks with unknown effects and more for the proficient user. But obviously this issue has been solved for many users already.

  • .psd thumbnails

How can I view the thumbnail picture on a .psd file in CS6.  All I get is a blue box with psd/PS on it instead of the picture that's on that file.  This is very annoying because if I'm looking for a specific .psd file I have to look on my picture viewing software, find out what the file name is and then pull it up on photoshop.  I have CS3 and I have no problem seeing the picture.

wondering why I can't view them on CS6.  There is no problem at all  viewing
That's because the File > Open dialog does not belong to Photoshop, it belongs to Windows. The blue icon is the result of removing a file that wrote the thumbnails because of problems on some systems.
Photoshop had a file called "psicon.dll" that wrote the thumbnails at the OS level but on some systems there were "file locking" problems and Adobe took it out. Since then Adobe and Microsoft have not been able come to an agreement as to who should do what.
You can blame Adobe or Microsoft all you want, but you won't get .psd thumbnails at the OS level. I know, I tried for a year and that was years ago. That's why I went with FPV.
The software I linked you to are "codecs". Upon install they produce .psd thumbnails in Windows so that you can see them when you use File > Open as an example.
Give FPV a try and let me know what you think. Or go with sagethumbs as Trevor recommended.
Yes it does fix the thumbnail problem.

  • Viewing PSD thumbnails...

    Hi,
So sick of not being able to view PSD thumbnails, not even from the regular "OPEN FILE" dialog in Photoshop CS6.
Besides 3rd party commercial software like Mystic Thumbs, what solutions are out there for me?
    Thanks.

Looks like a cool app. To bad Microsft decided to make it harder to find the codecs. Anyway, the system is Approx. a year old. Its possible another app installed the codec with it.
OK, downloaded and ran it. The only thing I can think of which I totally forgot about was the Canon Raw codec. Other than that just Microsoft is listed.
Ah, jeesh I overlooked it, the psd codec is from Microft apparently it came on my system. It's dated 2010 which would explain why 2012 files don't display, but the 2007 should have. Must be behind a version when they created it.
Anyway, here is the screen grabs...

  • PSD Thumbnails Not Showing

I have upgraded to Photoshop CS5 extended and for some reason the PSD thumbnails are not showing up.
The PSD files just show up with the blue PS icon but the thumbnail image  is missing - I have to open each PSD to find out what the image is.
FYI, I am running Win XP Pro 32 Bit
Any suggestions would be highly appreciated, thanks!

For future readers of this thread (e.g., those who might find it through a search):
The psicon.dll fix listed in the link posted above will ONLY work on a 32 bit system.
There is no free solution for 64 bit systems (e.g., Windows 7 x64) at this time, so if you have an x64 system don't waste your time trying it.  Commercial software must be purchased to do the job.  There are several good packages out there.
