No qtz files in Screen Savers folder

I recently got a new MacBook Pro and installed XCode 4 in it. However, it surprisingly doesn't have any qtz files in '/Users/Anand/Library/Compositions/' or '/Users/Anand/Library/Screen Savers/' folder.
What may be the reason for it. I also used Migration Assitant to transfer just my documents from my previous MacBook.

.xsession .xinitrc
I need these so that when I install xfce i can boot up on it immidiatly.
My home folder now has .bashrc and .bash_profile. Is that all there is on a fresh install?
Well, a fresh (Core) install does not include X11 so obviously .xsession and .xinitrc do not exist in /etc/skel.  If you create your user after you have installed the xorg group then adduser will copy across the .xinit and .xsession files.  Alternatively you can copy these manually if you install xorg afer you have created your user.

  • Screen saver will only display Flury option.  After upgrading to Mavericks I had many Apple pictures in my screen savers folder.  I deleted them and found that Flury was the only screen saver that functioned.

Screen saver in Apple prefrences will only recognise Flury as an option.  Any attempted to change the screen saver selection results in a lock up of Apple screen saver prefrences.  Forced shut down will clear the lock up, but dos not solve the problem.  I updated Iphoto and repaired permissions. Neither solved the problem.

I found a fix.  In the ~library/preferences/byhost directory.  My directory had a broken link.  I deleted it.  Rebooted.  The folder came back with various files and I was able to change my screensaver!  Good luck.

  • Random use of screen savers

    Morning.
How can I limit the screen savers used in random mode to only a determined few?
    TIA and kind regards, Friedrich
    MBP 2CD 2.16 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1 GB RAM

    Hi, Friedrich.
Only by removing the undesired screen savers, which I do not recommend since it's a hack.
Screen Savers are generally installed in one of the following three folders:
    1. Screen savers bundled with Mac OS X are found in the Computer > Macintosh HD > System > Library > Screen Savers folder.
    2. Third-party screen savers would likely install themselves in the Computer > Macintosh HD > Library > Screen Savers folder.
    3. Your Home > Library > Screen Savers folder is another potential location for third-party screen savers.
There are also two special cases to the above:• The Computer Name and Pictures Folder screen savers are buried deep within the operating system and are found in the directory:
    /System/Library/Frameworks/ScreenSaver.framework/Versions/A/Resources
    • The .Mac screen saver is hidden since its file name begins with a period (.). The file actually resides in the Macintosh HD > Library > Screen Savers folder, but you need to enabled Finder's feature to display hidden and invisible files to see it. Third-party utilities, such as the freeware application TinkerTool, provide a function for enabling/disabling the Finder's ability to show hidden and invisible files. You may want to submit a Mac OS X Feedback requesting that Apple add a feature for the function you desire.
    Good luck!

  • Delete .mac applic from Screen Savers

    Hi,
Can anyone tell me the easiest way to delete .mac or any other file from the System Preferences/Screen Savers? I'm looking for a utility or short cut way that doesn't involve typing codes into the Terminal.

There are three Screen Saver folders: /System/Library/Screen Savers/, /Library/Screen Savers/, and /Home/Library/Screen Savers/. Any third-party screen savers should be installed in one of the latter two folders. /Library/Screen Savers/ for screen savers that should be accessible to all users or /Home/Library/Screen Savers/ for screen savers only accessible by you. The screen savers in the /System/Library/Screen Savers/ folder is reserved for screen savers included in the OS X system installation.
From what you've provided I cannot tell you why such a dialog would appear unless you have the MobileMe and RSS screen saver (or some other screen saver) selected at the time you open the Screen Saver preferences.

  • Quartz Screen savers no longer work in OSX 10.8.

They were made in earlier OSX versions and still run in OSX 10.7 on another machine. I see other quartz files in the Screen Saver folder in the Library of the 10.8 machine but mine won't work. Why does the System Pref window display the quartz files that came with the system but not the ones I made and inserted? Do I need to run these .qtz files through something or install them in a new manner? They show up in the window of the different folders fine and the preview of them show the animation just fine.  They simply don't show up in the Screen Saver app in the System Preferences so are not able to be used.

I placed my older .qtz screensavers into system>library>screensaver where the screensavers and slideshows that came with the ML installation placed them.  I have now used their names for my older .qtz files and when I use the System Preferences and look at Desktop/Screensaver I do not see my older qtz files, I only see the ones that came with the installation.
But, since I have renamed my older qtz file after one of the existing ones (Arabesque), when I choose Arabesque I actually engage my older qtz file.  This allows me to use the file but does not answer why this is happening.  Am I now limited to only the number screen savers that came with the installation as renamed files?
So, this discussion has helped me to do what I wanted but I have not solved the actual problem.  There must be a simple explanation and way to use a file with its proper name.

  • Open the Library/Screen Savers?

    Hello,
I run Leopard, and I tried to use PackageMaker to package up a Quartz Composition I made. I tried to make PackageMaker place the composition into User/Library/Screen Savers, but that would not work. It would work fine in my account, but if I tried on a different computer, it would not place the file.
So unless anyone knows how to use PackageMaker, I decided to write an applescript that would open User/Library/Screen Savers
This probably wont work on, since it would open MY account, that does NOT exist on the other computer.

  • Help did 9.1 update and now cant find where my screen  savers

hi i just updated my system to 9.1 and now i cant find the screen savers there is no screen saver control panel .looked every where i u can help me i would be indebted to u i am a newbie been using windows for ten year im in lov e with this mac !!!!!

    Hi, alottab -
i beilive it has a folder named previos system
That would indicate that you did perform a Clean Install.
The result of a Clean Install is that you get a brand new, "clean" System Folder of the new OS, and the old one is renamed to "Previous System Folder". The "Previous" one contains all the items that had been in the OS before the update; the new one does not.
Your screensaver software should be in the Previous System Folder. None of its files are accessed by the new OS, which is why you would not have access to the control panel for that screensaver software. In order to use the old items in the new OS, you would need to move the software from the Previous System Folder to the appropriate locations in the new one.
    Notes -
    1) Do not replace any of the OS 9 software with items from the Previous System Folder. Older third-party (non-Apple) software items may or may not work in OS 9, but be sure to not replace any OS 9 system software items with ones from OS 8.
    2) Some OS 8 software will not work in OS 9. In particular, this includes some screensaver software such as After Dark. As Kenichi Watanabew pointed out, there is no native (built-in) screensaver software for OS 9 and earlier; all such is third-party software.
    <hr>
There are some screensavers available which will work in OS 9; some are free, some are not. Here are some sources -
Screen Gear - Screen Saver, Image Displayer
    MacScreenSavers.com - Free screen savers
    VersionTracker: Screen Savers
    Free Macintosh: Apple Screen Savers
    Pure Mac: Screen Savers
    Filedudes
    Tucows Macintosh
Be sure to read the description of any of those you are interested in to be sure they will work in OS 9.
Screensaver programs can be useful and even fun, but they are not necessary. In OS 9 you can use the Energy Saver control panel to auto-sleep the machine and monitor after a delay of your choosing. I set mine to sleep only the monitor, and not the machine - wakeup is near instantaneous.

  • Screen savers

"Tiger" had a lovely Beach slide show that's not present in Mtn Lion.  The two OS versions store Screen Saver pieces in different places.
I found what appears to be a single file in Tiger for "Beach" slide show & stored it in the Mtn Lion system (in the user/Pictures ƒ), telling System Preferences where to find that file, & now I have the old screen saver slide show I liked.
Mtn Lion stores individual images in /System/Library/Frameworks/ScreenSaver.framework/Versions/A/Resources/Default Collections ƒ, with individual image folders named National Geographic, Aerial, Cosmos & Nature Patterns.  One has the option to choose one of these from a drop-down menu on the right side of System Preferences -> Desktop & Screen Savers -> Screen Savers, OR to choose a folder/file through another choice & a finder window.
Mtn Lion seems to have identical files screen saver slide show image files, branching at "Versions" ƒ, but in the alias folder "Current" (all else seems identical), AND at the same level as "Versions" ƒ in an alias folder named "Resources".  No clue why these folders/files appear 3 times.
    The Tiger version was Beach.slideSaver (v1.1), & that's what's now in the user/Pictures ƒ (9.8MB)
But I've also found a v1.3 of that same file in /System/Library/Screen Savers (5.6MB), but I'm not able to *select* that file with System Preferences.  As a matter of fact, the various screen savers from Tiger appear in that Mtn Lion folder but newer versions (plus a couple more selections).
    Very confusing!!!
Everything appears to be working, so I don't think I did anything wrong, but perhaps not as elegantly as I could have.  Any feedback?
Any idea why there are discrepancies between the versions, & why I can't choose the newer versions?  I assume the larger file holds more images.
Why aren't the individual images stored like in the new "National Geographic" slide show?  Or is this something a mere user shouldn't ask?  I'm happy I get to add a floating clock to the screen saver slideshow....

There are no screensavers for the BlackBerry as the screen turns off to save battery life. You can get themes, wallpapers, ringtones, etc. Usually you can get a link to install them over the air or in required you can use Application Loader within Desktop Manager to load software onto the device.

  • Quartz Extreme and Screen Savers not working

I couldn't find an answer to my problem. But I found an answer close to mine said (10.4.4 broke Quartz Extreme). There system profiler says Quartz not supported. I checked mine says the same thing now. The answer was to delete two files from system library (Extension.kextcache and Extension.mkext) I did that and restarted worked fine, turn computer back on today back to the same problem.
    I could use some HELP.
This is my problem. I don't remember when this started but it's been months. It's my screen savers I have regular savers and Quartz savers and Quartz saver I made when I got Tiger. Went to change saver one day and all my Quartz savers were missing some savers that were not Quartz and the screen saver called my computer name has a blue file folder. I went thought the savers found some that made System Preference crash though them out still did not help, checked saver folder all there. I restarted computer some times were there, some times not might have to restart few more times to work. When I turn computer on next day some times would be all back some times not. Have had regular screen saver missing but when screen saver kicked in after some time it work but not in list. Checked folder again the saver were missing from folder too this time. I don't want to have to restart my computer each time I want to use those savers. Some time have to keep started over and over again in a roll to get to work don't think thats very good for my computer. I also did repair permission that didn't help. Don't know what to try next. Can anybody help.

Yes, I did try a new account and the screen saver still will not come on. I spent about an hour on the phone with Apple Support and the tech did seem sharp. After trying many things including your suggestion his opinion was that I downloaded something that wrote something into the screen saver Pref's or something to keep it from activating. The only screen saver I had downloaded around that time was a Superman one relating to the new Superman movie. I think I will contact the originator of that screen saver and see what he has to say. Apple support suggested I do a new OS install. Thanks for your reply to my post

  • Mountain Lion Screen Savers

I am having an increasingly intermittent problem with screen savers not starting at all. I have tried deleting preference files (both from the preferences folder and the 'ByHost' preferences folder and re-booting.
Both of my energy settings are set to 'never'.
This problem has only arisen after I had a ssd drive failure and then restored to a new drive using Time Machine.
    Any ideas, thanks.

Actually, I was too quick to think this is solved. It is not, the problem keeps recurring after a few hours. Very strange.
    So.. it is not solved?

  • HT201361 Is it possible to save the screenshot files to a different folder than desktop. How can I change the folder?

Is it possible to save the screenshot files to a different folder than desktop (that is the default). How can I change the destination folder? Thank you, Sal

To change the screenshot capture location to a new place on your Mac, first think of a location that would serve you properly. We like to place ours in a "Screenshot" folder located inside of the User's "Pictures" folder. To change the location to this new location, open the Terminal and enter the following command:
    defaults write com.apple.screencapture location /Users/[u]/Pictures/Screenshots/
Replace "[u]" with the name of the user on your system. Once you have entered this command, let's restart the screen capture utility by restarting the SystemUIServer by entering the following command:
    killall SystemUIServer
You can optionally log out and back in instead of entering this second command, thus restarting the SystemUIServer. Once restarted, all screen captures taken from here on out will end up in your /Pictures/Screenshots/ folder in the User's home folder on your Mac.

I found the answer to my question.
When you attach a device (iPhone, iPad) to your Mac, in iTunes 12 in appears as a tiny icon in the second "row" of the iTunes display. Click the icon and the familiar iTunes display for the device appears. From there, on the Summary screen, you can see the dates of the backups of the device (iCloud and backup to the computer). You can also use the button to backup to the computer.

  • How can I save a file in the Downloads folder and automatically have it opened?

Often, I'd like to download a file, save it to my Downlaods folder and have it opened right away.
Currently, you can only decide between the two options "open" or "save to...". There's seemlingly no way Firefox can do both at once.
I know I can download it, open the downloads manager and open it manually. But when working with over a dozen documents a day, that doesn't quite do the trick.
In Chrome, you only have to click twice: Once for downloading and once for opening it from the download bar on the bottom of the screen. You do not have to open a download manager.

Yeah, thanks but that's not what I was trying to ask.
I know that you can save and open a document by performing these three steps:
    1. Confirming to save a file to the Downloads folder
    2. Open the download manager by clicking the temporarily green arrow
    3. Clicking on the downloaded file
What I would like to know is whether or not it is possible to have Firefox open a saved file ''automatically''. At the moment, if I choose to open it automatically, it is only saved to my temp folder.
It would be great though if it was saved to my Downloads folder ''and'' opened with the respective program on my pc. Is there a way to do this?
