No reaction while connecting external devices

Hello everybody,
my macbook pro retina doesn't react to any input by keyboard or touchpad for a few seconds if i connect a device like harddrives or mobile phones. is this normal? what can i do?
thanks for your answers!
jannik1810

Hello Jannik1810,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities
To me, that sounds normal. As for troubleshooting, I would reset the SMC on the computer and see if that has any effect on it.

    Hi Divya,
    based on your description I think that maybe the forum Process Integration (PI) & SOA Middleware would be a better place for discussing this kind of requirement.

  • Suddenly the USB ports in my Macbook Air are not detecting the connected external devices

    So far I have connecting external hard disk to my Macbook Air and they were working finr. Suddenly none of these are bing detected. Kindly support

    You may want to reset the SMC and see if this resolves your issues.

  • At times OS slow to connect external devices.

    Howdy,
    I have an external HD I occasionally attach to do backups. Quite often it takes a long time for the HD to mount and also for SuperDuper! to connect to the HD and become responsive to input.
    Today the same thing happened when iTunes attempted to connect to my iPhone to sync.
    Any idea what is going on? Is Apple working on this problem?
    Good Luck,
    Herb Schulz

    Howdy,
    This occurs when I first connect the HD (it's a LaCie Quadra connected via FireWire800) not when it has been on for a while. Also, the HD is NOT being put to sleep via the Energy Saver Preference Pane.
    Good Luck,
    Herb Schulz

  • How to connect external device to sound card?

    - Hello!
    I have X-Fi gamer, but when I connect my external sound device there is no sound. Actually there is, but only when I plug it into the microfon in (white), but then the sound is very low quality.
    In Vista speaker properties the Line In is unmuted and set to 00.
    Any advice?

    There have been a number of threads discussing using the parallel port. One of the resent ones, having to do with LabVIEW 8.2 may be found at :http://forums.ni.com/ni/board/message?board.id=170&message.id=254900&requireLogin=False
    A search on "parallel" in the discussion forums will return a log of links.

  • Ultra slow indexing while connecting external drives

    Hi, this is my first post.
    I've some problems with Lion, under Snow Leopard it was all ok.
    This is my setup:
    i've 73 (yes 73) external hard drives each one containing tons and tons of files (textures, libraries, images, documents).
    Under Snow Leopard, when i plugged one hard drive and searched for a file (example: .rar) in Spotlight, in few seconds i had the complete listing of the .rar files in that hard drive.
    Now, if I plug that hard drive, i see some strange issues:
    -it lists always some 1040 - 1060 .rar files even if i have 18567 .rar files on that drive. This happens in few seconds, then it starts indexing - always
    -the scroll is VERY slow compared to the scroll in snow leopard, i mean it takes time to get to 10.000+ files option (snow leopard was faster)
    -i've to index each new hard drive i connect to my macbook, and this is time wasting. In Snow Leopard i just connected new hard drives with files on them and in few seconds i had access to the whole list of .rar files.
    Now, is this a known Spotlight bug?
    This is the reason why i dual booted with SL, because when I have to search files on a new external HD it's faster for me to reboot the machine, enter SL, do a search, copy the file on the internal HD and then reboot in Lion. This is not good.
    Any ideas?
    Don't tell me to upgrade to 10.7.x please... that does not resolve this issue.
    Thanks
    ps: my internal HD is a Seagate Momentus XT 500gb 7200 with 4gb SSD fwSD25

    I am having the same problem and I just heard back from an Apple Tec stating that the engineers purposly removed the ability to Spotlight External / Networked hard Drives with Lion OS.
    WHAT THE H*LL WERE THEY THINKING. Why would the engineers take out the the ability to index External and Networked Drives?
    Removing this feature slows me down to a crawl. I have 100's of files stored on USB Hard Drives at home and 1000's of files store on our company Network at work that I now have to look at line by line and folder by folder to find a file that I need.
    What is the point of SpotLight if I can not find anything store on external drives?

  • External device icon not showing

    i am using a MacBook 10.5.8
    The " icon " for the external device " Hard Drive " manufactured by Sea Gate will not show.
    Does any one know of words to search for ? while the external device has only shown a icon.
    I have gone into Terminal to look at " ps -ax " and thought maybe connected device`s might show up there.
    the procedure that i go thru to access the external device is, plug it into the machine and then plug in its power source.
    The device is operating , by what feels like a vibratory feeling vie the human paw grasping it , the external HD.
    i do not want to just unplug it "thinking" that, that would re set it, i have read in past posts that to just unplug could damage the integrity of the data in the external HD.
    assistance with this dilemma.
    Thank you.

    Thank you.
    If it has not mounted (i.e it is not showing on the desktop) unplugging it will not interrupt any potential writes to the hard drive as it is not functioning, so that won't harm it.
    Before you remove it, try logging out and logging back in again as that can often re-establish a connection.
    You don't say if it is USB or Firewire, but I have found on occasion that a firewire connected hard drive that does not show on the Desktop, can be remedied, by disconnecting the drive and completely switching the Mac off and even removing the mains power cable and let it sit for 5 minutes. Doing this can reset the Firewire port.
    After restart, plugging the firewire ext. drive back shows up.
    EDIT: The above assumes the disk is sound, ie, you know it works.

  • Restored iMac from an MBP Backup giving problems with external devices

    Recently, I restored from an MBP Leopard OS Time machine Backup into a new iMac 27".
    Restoring process ran smoothly and took like an hour to recover my files and applications from the external disk time machine backup and after that the new iMac had everything my old MBP used to have but the OS. So far so good.
    But now I'm having problems connecting external devices, like the very same external disk to set my time machine backup or a Cannon Printer.
    The iMac can recognize and attach the external HDD (iOmega 1TB), I've succesfully formated it several times, but as soon as the backup process starts it will idle after backing 200MB or so and the HDD will be abruptly disconnected.
    Regarding the MP610 Cannon printer/scanner I used it smoothly once from this iMac, but after that it's been impossible to scan or print again, and it keeps saying it is connected to an MBP instead of an iMac!
    I already read the other related topics but my case is slightly different than those, so I will appreciate anyhelp you could provide me.

    When you say you restored, what does that mean? Did you do a full restore, installing the system from the backup onto the iMac? If so, you've probably borked the system and will have to reinstall it. See:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2186
    Also, if you restored applications, it's possible some of those applications are not installed correctly or are not compatible with SL. Printing problems are common among folks who have not updated printer drivers to SL-compatible versions.

  • How to make external devices (like iPods, etc.) NOT mount as connected drives when plugged in via USB to a Mac?

    If I plug my iPod (or a thumb drive or whatever) to my Mac's USB port, the device appears as a icon representing a connected drive on my Mac's Desktop.
    This is normal, expected behavior.
    HOWEVER, in some cases, I'd prefer that the device not "mount" as a connected external drive.
    With thumb drives or external USB drive, of course, I want them to "mount" so I can transfer files on or off them -- that would be the only possible reason to connect an external drive like that.
    But with other Apple devices like iPods or iPhones, there are TWO possible reasons to connect them to a Mac: either to "sync" them or transfer files on/off them; OR, to simply recharge the device's battery. (Or, both sync and recharging functions at once.)
    For those people who use their Apple devices in ways that require transferring files (i.e. most people), then having the device "mount" as a connected device is a desirable behavior.
    But in my circumstance (and I bet there are a lot of people in a similar circumstance), I have no need or desire to transfer any data to or from my device every time I plug it into my Mac: I'm plugging it in SOLELY to recharge the device's battery.
    Specifically, in my case, I have a 6th-gen iPod Nano, and I use it exclusively as an FM radio and a pedometer. I don't have any mp3s or songs or any other external files loaded on it, nor do I plan to add any in the future.
    The only reason I ever plug it into my Mac is so that I can recharge the iPod's battery.
    But the "problem," which is a minor one I admit but a problem nonetheless, is that every time I connect the iPod to the Mac, the iPod appears as a "connected drive" icon on my Mac's desktop. Which means that I'm not supposed to just unplug the iPod  when I'm done -- first, I have to find its icon on the Mac Desktop, and then drag the icon to the Trash, to "unmount" it -- and only then can I freely unplug the iPod without getting an error message telling me that I shouldn't just disconnect connected drives without first properly unmounting them.
    This would be bothersome enough if I only had to do it once per connection, but in the case of the iPod Nano, there's no way to tell how recharged it is while it is in the act of recharging, so that to see if I'm "done," I have to unplug it, check the battery status, and if it's not fully charged, re-plug it back in. So that each time I recharge it, I often have to unmount the drive several times, depending on how impatient I am.
    There has to be a way to prevent the mounting of the drives of devices that one is connecting simply for the purpose of recharging. But how?
    Strangely, I also have an old iPhone, and when I plug that in for recharging in the same way, it DOESN'T appear as a connected drive on the Desktop. I'm not sure how I managed to do this, but long ago I must have changed some setting or preference for this to happen. And by now I've forgotten what I did.
    I'd prefer that I could change the "mount/don't-mount" setting on a device-by-device basis -- i.e. make it such that this particular iPod doesn't load, but perhaps a different iPod would load -- but if that's not possible, then is there a way to stop ALL iPods and iPhones from loading as connected drives when plugged in?
    (I'm not talking about appearing as connected drives within iTunes -- I'm talking about appearing as an icon on the Desktop in the Finder.)
    And please don't tell me to just buy a wall charger! I prefer to recharge off my computer if possible, using the charging cord that came with the iPod.
    I presume there's some simple setting to toggle this on or off, but I haven't yet found it. Any clues would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Well, I already know about that Finder Preferences option, but that is not what I'm looking for. Why not? Because I still need CDs and DVDs to appear on the Desktop and mount properly! If I uncheck the "CDs, DVDs and iPods" option, then I lose the ability to access CDs and DVDs, which creates a whole new problem for me. What I want is to not mount iPods only -- actually, what I really want is to not mount this particular iPod -- but if that level of specificity is not possible, then I want to exclude just iPods from mounting, without also condemning CDs and DVDs (or whatever) to invisibility.
    Also, I was confused by the way the Preference is worded: It says "Show these items on the Desktop," with a series of options to check. But this phraseology seems to mean that the unchecked items will still "mount," they simply won't appear as Desktop icons. One would still have to "Eject" them using a menu command, rather than dragging the icon to the Trash -- right? Or am I mistaken, and is the Preference Pane simply badly worded, and when they say "Show these items on the Desktop," what they really mean is "mount these external devices as connected drives." So that if a category is unchecked, then they won't load as external drives at all?
    But if so, then what purpose could possibly be served by inserting a CD or DVD that is not recognized by the computer? And if it isn't recognized, then it would seem that there would be no way to ever Eject the CD or DVD disk. Right?
    Thus, if I uncheck that Finder Preference box you suggest, one of two outcomes will result:
    -- Either CD, DVDs and iPods are still mounted, they just won't appear as icons on the Desktop; but they would still need to be Ejected via a menu command, which doesn't solve my problem.
    -- Or, CDs, DVDs and iPods are not mounted or recognized by the computer at all, which means that if I insert a disk into the disk drive, it will get stuck there forever, since there's no way to Eject it, since the OS doesn't recognize that it's even there. Which is thereby a new problem.
    Either way, I'd have a problem! Or...? Clarification, anyone?

  • Is there any way to see if a file has been saved to an external device, or to see a history of which external devics have been connected to an iMac in 10.6.7?

    I have a client that believes someone came into his house and took some digital files (photos, stored in iPhoto) off of his iMac (2.66GHz running v10.6.7)
    He usually just sleeps his computer while away and requires no password to login.  Is there any way to see if an external device or CD/DVD has been used to save files?  Is there any wya to see the history of a file and determine if it has been saved anywhere else?  I know this is a long shot, but I figure it is worth asking.

    Will it continue to say that the device is in lost mode if it has been restored?  My Find Iphone is saying that when the device is connected to the internet that it will be locked and that a message (that I typed in) will appear. It also says that I will be notified and that a sound will occur when it is connected. Now my iphone has been updated to the ios7, but I don't think his ipod was updated.

  • Studio Creator, Socket Connection to External Device

    I am porting an existing & successful project from Netbeans 3.6 into Studio Creator to take advantage of some of the tools in the IDE for this application. The project requires opening a socket connection from the Server PC to an external Device (PLC) that is a Client on a static IP & a dedicated fixed port.
    I am struggling to get past some security settings specific to AccessControlExceptions. Here is the code method being used to test:
    public String button1_action() {
    // Call methods to open connection, init streams, send command, and close connection.
    try {
    // Open Socket up and accept client connection
    ipSocketObject = new ServerSocket(port);
    bfSocket = ipSocketObject.accept();
    // Establish Streams
    is = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(bfSocket.getInputStream()));
    os = new PrintWriter(bfSocket.getOutputStream(), true);
    System.out.println("Got to here...");
    // Clear the msCounter #13002
    os.println("r13002=0");
    pattern = "13002";
    do{ret=is.readLine();} while ((ret.indexOf(pattern)) ==-1);
    is.close();
    os.close();
    bfSocket.close();
    ipSocketObject.close();
    } catch (IOException e) {
    e.printStackTrace();
    return null;
    The Socket Connection is established, but the command string is not processed before Studio Creator generates a AccessControlException Fault. I have experiemented putting in a SocketPermission statement with out success.
    Is anyone aware of some sample code I might be able to review for opening socket connections to clients in a Studio Creator Application? Please excuse this request if too rudimentary- I am an Industrial Controls guy by trade... :)

    Sorry I know of no such application at this time, and unfortunately have not done socket work myself for many moons....
    What JDK was your previous application written under? I googled for AccessControlException and socket and seems that sometimes accounts for some issues... you can also search for that combination in the forum advanced search and might find something there.... one more long shot suggestion based upon your statement "the command string is not processed".... could it be that you need to flush the stream...?
    Sorry I don't have more to offer...

  • My Ipad doesn't connect to wifi while all other devices are connected.

    My iPad doesn't connect to wifi anymore while all other devices in the same network are connected including iPod.
    iPad was connected this morning, but quit connecting since this afternoon.
    It tries to connect, but everytime connects, it disconnect within a second, and it keep doing the same thing.
    This is the first time ever I see this problem since I started using this iPad.
    What happened to my iPad??

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • Error while trying to synchronize audio and MIDI.  Sample rate 42804 recognized.  Check conflict between Garageband and external device.

    Sometimes, while playing back my software instrument songs, I get an intermittent pop-up error message, saying "Error while trying to synchronize audio and MIDI.  Sample rate 42804 recognized.  Check conflict between Garageband and external device."
    (Sometimes the five digit number is different, but remains a five-digit number beginning with "4".)
    Simultaneously, the song stops until I press the "Okay" button in the pop-up window.
    When I continue to play the song, the sound is jerky and clipped, and the playhead doesn't keep up with the song, and then suddenly jumps to the part of the song currently being played.
    There's also a sound of static.
    The issue seems to occur whether or not I have my MIDI controller turned on and plugged into my desktop Imac.
