No Registered Devices in ColorSync Utility

Apple's Colorsync Utility Help states:
To change a device profile with ColorSync Utility:
1. Open ColorSync Utility, located in /Applications/Utilities, and click Devices.
2. Select the device in the list.
The device's default (or factory) profile and its current profile are displayed.
3. Click the arrow beside Current Profile, choose Other, then locate and select the new profile.
When I follow these instructions. All Devices listed are empty. Why?

Michael, welcome, make sure that device is plugged in, turned on and working. I just checked and all of the devices that are presently available are there as stated in Help ( Scanners, Displays, Printers),. And all devices that are not presently available are empty (Prooferss, Cameras).
Which device are try to change?

  • How does one add a device to ColorSync Utility

I was wondering how one can add a "device" to ColorSync Utility? It seems all my "other" devices are showing up, such as my printer (which also has scanning capabilities).  However, I'm not seeing my i800 Microtek Scanner, "renamed" as ScanPotter anywhere, yet IS in my "Utilities" folder, and no doubt this could be the reason why everytime I scan a photo from a print, negative or slide I'm getting annoying "pop-ups" to install Xll Quartz, which IS already installed.  Also I plan to install the new PhotoElements 11...am I going to have a problem with that as well

Maybe it needs to be in Applications?

  • Colorsync Utility. Whenever I click on Devices or Filters, it hangs and I have to force quit. Any ideas as to how to fix this?

I'm having an issue with Colorsync Utility. When I open the utility I can access Profile First Aid, Profiles and the Calculator but whenever I click on Devices or Filters, it hangs and I have to force quit. I recently re-profiled my NEC monitor using xRite i1Profiler Pro and saved the ICC profile as "version 4". When I went to use the Nik's ColorEfex Pro 4 plug-in, in Adobe Photodhop CS5.1 (Creative Suite 5.5), I got a cyan cast across all my images. Nik said it had to do with a corrupt ICC profile but when I ran Profile First Aid, the only profile that came up as needing repair ( and couldn't) was EW-sRGB. I reprofiled the monitor only this time I saved it as "version 2", and the plug-in worked fine. What surprises me is that Colorsync Utilty always used to work without issue, and I never seemed to have a problem creatinga and saving ICC profiles using version 4. Any ideas as to what is causing this problem and  how to fix this?
    Thanks.

I updated my software, and deleted my history/cache.  Also, when I try to use Preview, it says that it was forced to quit while restoring windows, so when I click restore windows nothing happens.  I can't view anything either.  The only thing I can think that may have caused these problems is I tried to shut down and had to force it to by holding the power button.  I rarely shut it off.

  • Remove old iPhone from Device List in Colorsync Utility?

Does anyone know how to remove an old iPhone (that I no longer have access to) from the Device List in Colorsync Utility?  I've done a spotlight search for the text and have come up empty handed.  It must be hiding in a plist somewhere...but where?

It seems that the device list is stored in a hidden preference file. You can delete the file, or you can edit it with a free application called "PrefSetter." Deleting it would be easier, but you'll have to recreate some of your settings in System Preferences.
Back up all data if you haven’t already done so. Before proceeding, you must be sure you can restore your system to the state it’s in now.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    rm Library/Preferences/.GlobalPreferences.plist

  • Remove devices from colorsync

the "devices" tab in color sync shows a long list of printers that were once registered to my computer but that i no longer use.
Q: - how do i remove obsolete printers from the colorsync device list?
    - where does colorsync store its preferences/cache?
    thx for help!

    Hi Michael,
I found where these are stored and how to remove them. It took a little digging in the file system but they are being stored in a hidden preference plist file. Here is where it is and how to get rid of the unneeded devices.
    The file is /Library/Preferences/.GlobalPreferences.plist
If you are not Unix savvy the dot makes it a hidden file in Unix and it is not seen by Finder. Since the easiest way to edit plist files is Property List Editor you will need to get that tool. It is installed when you install the Mac OS development tools. If you haven't done so already it is on OS install cd or dvd.
Second you will have to make this file visible in Finder and change the file permissions so that the Property List Editor can open the file and write to the file. You do this by using the unix ln command. Open Terminal window and do the following.
    cd /Library/Preferences
    sudo chmod a+w .GlobalPreferences.plist
    ln -s .GlobalPreferences.plist GlobalPreferences.plist
    ls -l .GlobalPreferences.plist
    -rw-rw-rw- 1 root admin 3602 Jan 4 16:47 .GlobalPreferences.plist
    ls -l GlobalPreferences.plist
    lrwxrwxr-x 1 lsherwin admin 24 Jan 4 16:42 GlobalPreferences.plist@ -> .GlobalPreferences.plist
The ln -s command makes a Unix symbolic link, like an alias. You will see all the files and hidden files in the Preferences folder. You should now see both .GlobalPreferences.plist and later in the list GlobalPreferences.plist.
Now open the Property List Editor and open /Library/Preferences/GlobalPreferences.plist. You will get a window and in the top section will be "Root". Click on the triangle in front of "Root" and then click the triangle on "ColorSyncDevices". There will be a number of devices listed under "ColorSyncDevices". The ones you are interested in all begin with "Device-prtr-nnn" where nnn is a number.
Open each one by clicking on the triangle and see if there is a "DeviceName" entry. Open that to see the name associated with the device entry. If the name is one of the defunct printers that you want to delete click the "Device-prtr-nnnnn" line that contains the name you wish to delete and then click the "Delete" button at the top.
When you are done be sure to save the changes and then you can open the ColorSync Utility and you will see that defunct printers are now gone.
Let me know how it goes.

  • Colorsync Utility: How to delete no longer used printers?

I have a problem with the colorsync utility. In the device window some printers appear which are already deleated. I would like to only have the active printers shown but don´t know how to delete the printers within the device menu. I tried to put the colorsync utility preference file into the trash but this was not successfull. Any idea how to delete the devices I no longer use?
    Thanks for your help

I don't know for sure but I would think they would be located in the hard drive/library/colorsync/profiles folder.
I don't generally advocate moving things out of any of the system folders but I think that is where they are. If you want to move them out of there do so at your own risk

  • ColorSync Utility: Missing "Make Default" in Displays. Bug or feature?

    Hi there,
setting up my new MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard, I noticed that I can’t select my Default color management screen anymore in ColorSync Utility. There’s still the “Default” column in the Devices section, and the MBP’s display is marked as default, but for obvious reasons I’d like to have my better screen to be the default ColorSync screen.
But there’s no way to change this.
Hence the question – did the button go missing (i.e. a bug), or isn’t it necessary anymore as, perhaps, the new ColorSync CMM finally can fully manage multiple displays connected to one Mac?
Feedback much appreciated. I’m working on another article about color management with Macs, and this is sort of important information.

I have just tested this on a different webpage, and PHPSESSID shows up there. This seems to contradict my hypothesis of XSS prevention.

  • Colorsync Utility crashes on Intel Macs using ICC v4 profiles

There is an apparently known bug whereby opening ICC v4 profiles on an Intel Mac in Colorsync Utility, and picking on a device-to-lab tag (A2Bx), the application crashes. This did not happen on my Powerbook, so apparently it's only on Intel Macs. It also doesn't crash when doing this with ICC v2 profiles on my Intel. So, the combination of Intel and ICC v4 is the problem.
Has anyone encountered this? Any help would be appreciated, since this bug is also disabling a color management application that I need to use.

    Hi Jester,
    Two things,
The Quicktime setting is going to need to be 1.5Mb as iChat dislike LAN/Intranet
iGlasses is not going to work with iChat unless you ask iChat to run with Rosetta.
Go to the File Menu and use the Open With Rosetta option.
This is because you may not have the iGlasses as a Unviversal coded Add-on. See the third bullet point.
Update it if required. Delete it for Trouble shooting (Crashed Thread 11)
The paths are in this bit

  • ColorSync Utility won't open

Anyone else have this problem? I double click the icon, it appears in the dock, and the spinning beach ball simply keeps spinning, until I force quit. This behavior occurs on my iMac as well, which is also running 10.5.1. Both computers are G4s, vintage May, 2004. Both were upgraded from 10.3.9 to 10.5 in December, 2007.
I can get ColorSync Utility to open by opening an image file with the shortcut menu command "Open With...." (ColorSync Utility, in this case). While the program is opened in that mode, the File command "New Utility Window" doesn't operate.

    Carolyn,
Thanks for your suggestion. For anyone who may be following along, I had to open a graphic with ColorSync Utility to get ColorSync Utility to launch. Then I clicked the Show Filter Inspector icon in the Toolbar of the ColorSync window that the graphic opened in. That brought up a window with six tabs, one of which is Profile First Aid. In Profile First Aid, I clicked Repair. Here's the result:
(Please let me know if you can't see the graphic. I had a case of difficulty with that yesterday.)
If you can see the graphic, you will be able to notice that five profiles have errors and none were repaired. The Epson Perfection 4180 is my flatbed scanner. I have no idea what the other devices are.
If the graphic is not accessible, here's the text from the repair attempt:
    Searching for profiles...
    Checking 27 profiles...
    /Library/ColorSync/Profiles/EPSON Perfection4180
Tag 'dmnd': Tag size is not correct. Could not be fixed.
Tag 'dmdd': Tag size is not correct. Could not be fixed.

Tag 'dmnd': Tag size is not correct. Could not be fixed.
    /Library/ColorSync/Profiles/EW-CIE RGB
Tag 'desc': Tag size is not correct. Could not be fixed.
    /Library/ColorSync/Profiles/EW-SMPTE
Tag 'desc': Tag size is not correct. Could not be fixed.
    /Library/ColorSync/Profiles/EW-sRGB
Tag 'dmnd': Tag size is not correct. Could not be fixed.
Repair done - 0 out of 5 profiles fixed.
Any further insight would be greatly appreciated.

  • Color management issues with colorsync utility

    hi all,
I'm trying to properly color manage my workflow from camera to monitor to printer and I read through the entire manual on the "colorsync utility" which is supposed to do this.  That's an hour of my life I'll never get back.  Anyway the color is different on my camera's screen from my computer monitor and the final output is radically different.
I've used the ICC profile for my camera (Canon Rebel XT) and I've visually callibrated my monitor.  I'm using a Canon IP 4600 with a continuous ink system (non OEM ink).
What I need to know is how do I change the color space visually?  What I mean is without spending hundreds on colorometers etc.  I know how to manually callibrate my computer monitor, but how do I ensure that my camera matches my screen and how do I compensate for the non OEM ink?
    thanks for any help

    Dougfly,
Only an hour wasted? Lucky you. Color is an incredibly complex subject. First, forget matching anything to the small LCD on the back of your camera. That's there as a basic guide and is affected by the internal jpg algorithm of your camera.
2nd, you're not really takeing a color photo with your digital camera, but three separate B&W images in a mosaic pattern, exposed thru separate red, green and blue filters. Actual color doesn't happen until that matrix is demosaiced in either your raw converter, or the in-camera processor (which relies heavily on camera settings, saturation, contrast, mode, etc.)
Having said the above, you can still get very good, predictable results in your workflow. I have a few color management articles on my website that you might find very helpful. Check out the Introduction to Color Management and Monitor and Printer Profiling. In my opinion, a monitor calibration device is the minimum entry fee if you want decent color.

  • How to assign color profile to scanner in ColorSync Utility?

    Hi,
I have run into trouble when trying to assign a color profile of my Epson 2480 flatbed scanner. I have a profile that came with the drivers, but every time I try to click on the device and change the Current Profile, the list of profiles available in the system Profiles folder only shows Apple generic profiles. I can't change the Default profile either (the blue dot next to the device profile list).
What can I do to change this? If you don't know the answer, can you point me to the best (in your opinion) forum where those issues are frequently discussed?
I'll continue my research in the meantime...

    OK, I answered myself...
ColorSync Utility was by default looking in the System/Library/ instead of the main Library/ directory. The path is almost identical and I got fooled by this.

  • How can I print with ColorSync Utility

When I receive an attachment via entourage,it automatically opens in ColorSync utility. I want to print so I go to the 'File' menu and I cannot print because the print option is "greyed out". Can anyone tell me how I can resolve this so that I can print e-mail attachments?

    1. Drag it to the Preview Icon
To make Preview the Default for jpegs:
Select a Jpeg in the Finder
    Go file -> Get Info
Look for the 'Open With' pane in the resultng Window. Select Preview from the DropDown and click the Change All button

I no longer have any of my pcs that I had registered on iTunes and I am at my limit on the number of registered devices  how do I unregistere old machines that I no longer have so I can get my old music that I have down loaded.?

Go to your account in the iTunes Store and look for the De-authorise All button in your account's details. Use the De-authorise All and then authorise the PCs you still have.

When trying to log into face time I get the registering device does not have appropriate credentials after I sign in, I have OSX 10.8.4 on my Mac Pro. I can log into face time without a problem using my IPAD.>

Please take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried, until the issue is reolved. If there's no resolution after Step 3, post your results.
    Step 1
Sign out of iMessage in the Accounts tab of the preferences dialog, then sign back in.
    Step 2
Log out of your user account and log back in.
    Step 3
Boot in safe mode and test, then reboot as usual and test again.
Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
