No response from Firewire 800 connection.

Hi,
I have two Freecom HardDrive Pro FW400/800drives. One (1TB) is brand new and unformatted. The 512GB drive is connected by FW800. I can see the partitions, but cannot access them. Changing to FW400 gives me full control. When attaching the new drive by FW800, it spins up but cannot be seen.
Can someone help diagnose this one for me please?
Thanks,
Tris.

  • Upgrading my intel iMac to internal SSD and running 1TB external drive from firewire 800 for mass storage while still using a second external drive for backups...my goal-speed with a SSD, to still have 1TB of room for everything i have now..possible?

I seem to kill HD's every two years...the last two i've installed were WD Caviar Black 1TB 7200rpm 3.5" drives. The speed gains over  stock drives have been remarkable. I don't blame the drives for the failures, my machines are up and running 16 hours a day, every day, year round. They die from 'mileage' so to speak...i assume...there's no viral acvtivity or questionable downloads to gunk things up...just lots of work.
I have my third new drive ready to install in my intel based iMac...but i've had a thought...I want to install a SSD in my iMac for the speed gain (and recent price drops)...for standard storage i want to use this new WD Caviar Black 1TB in an external drive bay and connect via firewire 800 for storing everything except the OS and my most commonly used software...am i crazy? will the firewire 800 external drive negate the speed gained with an internal SSD??
I have four iMacs in my office, and one at home. I buy second hand and install new drives and boost memory. I'm going to do this on my 'home' machine...if it works out well i want to upgrade the other three this way...but first i need to know if i'm just dreaming, or will it really make a difference? or even possible??
    Thanks!

    OSX ver. 10.8

The SSD gives great bootup and Application launch speed. I think it also speeds up the video rendering a bit, I do all that on the SSD and then move the finished project to the external drives. As far as the speed for the external drives they are quick enough for viewing video and the file transfer rate is good. I had initially put the SSD into an external cradle (FW800) and the system was faster than on the internal drive. I only got a 1.5GBs SATA drive, perhaps yours could benefit from the 3GBs. I know the 6GBs would be too fast and costs a lot more, even the MacPros need special hookups to make use of the 6GBs.

  • Securing FireWire 800 connection to Macbook Pro

I am really surprised that there doesn't seen to be one post here related to the poor connection FireWire 800 makes on the Macbook Pro. The portable nature begs for this to stay connected when there is movement. Not so. Judging from this discussion, many others have experienced this problem. It also seems that Apple doesn't want to take any ownership for it judging from Genius bar advice.
Has anyone found a way to fix this issue?

It seems that it all depends on the cable - I use FW800 on my MBP and can wiggle around to my heart's content with the FW cable plugged in. No problems with my cable on a late 2011 MBP.

  • Canon Gl2 Video Camera Not Recognized with Firewire 800 Connection

I have a late 2010 mac with 2.93 Ghz Intel Core i7 Processor with 12GB DDR3 running 10.8.2 OSX.  I have a Canon GL2 video camcorder with a MiniDV tape I am trying to download to my computer.  I am using a new 4pin to 9pin Rocketfish Firewire 800 cable. My computer is not recognizing the firewire input from the GL2.  As suggested with other support threads, I have tried to turn the mac and computer off and on, as well as check to see if the cable is working.  I have also tried both a trial version of Final Cut, and Imovie 09 which is loaded on my Mac, neither of which will recognize the camera.  I clicked on the System Information icon and looked at the Firewire 800 status which was:
    FireWire Bus:
Warning: Unable to list FireWire devices.
Maximum Speed: Up to 800 Mb/sec
At least I know it recognized something.  I have also checked to make sure the Canon is set to DV-Out on the Menu.  Since I am unable to use a USB connector with MiniDV, would there be any other way to either A) Download the video to the computer, or B) get the Mac to recognize the source plugged into the Firewire?   Any help with this would be excellent.

I believe that in order to be recognized, you have to start the process from within iMovie of Final Cut; as for your FW port, you can try these two different troubleshooting steps (may or may not work, but won't hurt):
    Reset SMC:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    PRAM:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
It may that your FW port is defective; it that turns out to be the problem, I hope you purchased Applecare because those ports are an integral part of the logic board, so that would have to be replaced ($$$).
Since your footage is on DV tapes, you do need the FW to transfer it or it will not work. One other (involved) way would be to transfer your footage to a DVD if you have a DVD recorder and then get it on the Mac from there.

  • Firewire 800 Connection Dismounting

We've been having major issues with the Firewire 800 port on our recently purchased iMac 27" (with Thunderbolt).
For a while we noticed the Firewire 800 port was rather flakey, dropping connections here and there. It's now almost consistant - as soon as we set up any sort of transfer the transfer begins and after about 1.5 gb or so have been coppied the drives will start spinning strangely and the "Did Not Eject" warning appears.
This is with SEVERAL drives, all of which work fine with the other MacPros/MacBook Pros in the office. These drives are also just fine with USB so it's not the firewire on the drives themselves. It seems to be particualrly bad with any drives which are bus powered.
Tried several different cables and I know thats not the issue either. The problem still persists.
We are a media studio specializing in broadcast and design and this computer is used predominantly for video editing which means we transfer a lot of our large files via Firewire 800, so it not working puts a serious kink in our workflow.
Anyone else noticing the issue with these recent iMac 27" (which I've heard feature a whole host of issues)? Anyone know how I can get in touch directly with Apple?

    Reset PRAM and then OK

    Hello afrmedia,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with your FireWire 800 port.  I found an article with steps you can take to troubleshoot an issue like this.
I recommend following the steps in the section titled "Top troubleshooting tips" in the following article:

  • After 10.9.2 upgrade no firewire 800 connection

After upgrading (iMac 24 2007) to 10.9.2 Mavericks the connection to all of my firewire drives got lost.

    Hey Guys,
After recent SMC+EFI update on Macbook Air (Mid 2013) OSX v10.9.3, my internal audio device disappeared,
I tried everything I could find in google with no luck. (NPRAM+SMC reset, reloading kents etc.)
THIS IS WHAT SOLVED THE PROBLEM FOR ME:
    1. I opened /System/Library/Extensions folder, there I found besides the usual AppleHDA.kext, also an AppleHDA.kext.disabled one.
    2. I switched between them (swapped their names, sometimes you'll have to do it from the "get info" menu to take effect)
-- if you don't have this AppleHDA.kext.disabled one, try searching for one lil older than yours in the internet
    3. then I unloaded and reloaded the kent dir again-
    sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/AppleHDA.kext
    sudo kextload /System/Library/Extensions/AppleHDA.kext
    And voila!
Hope it helps someone, as I spent hours until getting this to work again

  • Firewire 800 connection problem

    Hi!
So my warranty just expired a month ago. I went to get my mac fixed right before it and it came back with an issue with my firewire. No big deal really. I called back, they helped me fix it, but now it's doing it again.
The external hard drive I connected to the FW8 port works fine. I've tried it with other cables (FW4 and USB2) so I know it's not the hard drive. However, when I try using the FW8, it does not show up at all. I have 2 different external drives and I've tried both of them. Last time when we fixed this, it turns out my mac was trying to boot from the disk or something? I can't remember... nor do I have any idea where to start to mess with the configuration. Help please? the disk is lighting up, so it is powering on... it just isn't showing up!

I'm completely confused: you start by saying "The external hard drive I connected to the FW8 port works fine." Then in apparently complete contradiction you write:
However, when I try using the FW8, it does not show up at all.
What do you mean, "the disk is lighting up?"
    And:
Last time when we fixed this, it turns out my mac was trying to boot from the disk or something?
The Mac should be trying to boot from some disk.
    And then:
I've tried it with other cables (FW4 and USB2) so I know it's not the hard drive.
What does that mean? What is it in, "I've tried it....?" And, are you saying it works (which I suppose means the external does mount) using the FW4 and USB Ports?
I know you have a real problem but I really have no idea what you are asking
In case, as your topic suggests, you are simply asking about a problem with the Firewire Port, do what Roger suggested and have a look at this article.

  • Boot 10.5.5 from firewire 800 on My MacBook Pro

Ok I have been trying to install 10.5.5 on and boot from a WD5000MT external drive. The install portion went fine but trying to boot while hooked up by fw800 eventually times out. The drive also has USB so I tried it from there and it came right up.
Is it just this drive? Are others able to boot from this or other drives by FW800?
    Thanks for any help
    J

Hi, jbrody, and welcome to Apple Discussions. Western Digital's FireWire drive enclosures tend not to be bootable. They use an inferior bridge chipset or cripple a good one with proprietary firmware, depending on whose claims/information you believe. I've seen far more posts about WD FW drives failing to boot Powerbooks and MB/MBPs than all other external FW drive brands combined. I wouldn't buy one under any circumstances. If you aren't satisfied to connect yours via USB instead of FireWire, return it in exchange for another brand with an Oxford FW bridge chipset or ask for a refund.

  • Have been using FireWire 800 connection for WD MyBook Studio

Have been using firewire800 with my WD MyBook Studio primarily for Time Machine backup. May need to be replaced - if I replace with WD MyBook for Mac or something else ( perhaps Seagate) with usb2.0 will I notice a big change in time for TM? If I transfer files to another ext drive, will I notice longer time saving iTunes or iPhoto to an express drive??
Any comments or suggestions are welcome. I have always used WD but wonder if Seagate or someone else has something.
    Thanks

WD electronics in their external drives don't have a very good reputation, so another brand might be a good idea. I like OWC drives as many of them use Oxford chipsets as well as multiple connections like USB and Firewire (I prefer a Firewire connection). Some examples are this or this.
I use a BackPack to get my external drive off the desktop, which is a handy way to mount it.

  • Firewire 800 connection comes lose

i added a ministack max to my 2010 mini and the firewire cable does not stay connected
any ideas to make it stay.   i figure it getting nudged when turning off an on is doing it.

I had a similar issue and found I needed to get a different cable that had a slightly longer nose so it would insert deeper into the receptacle.  Not all FW cables are the same dimension.

  • Response from apple re: connecting to MUSIC STORE

I got an email today from Apple apologising for my inconvience with my not being able to connect to the ITMS. They said there was an issue with the music store that has now been resovled and assured me I would have no more issues connecting to it, but alas, I have just tried and STILL same error message I have been getting for 3 weeks now!
    Anyone else get this reply?

    This is the actual email:
I'm sorry you ran into an error when you tried to use the Music Store. This error was caused by a temporary issue with the iTunes Music Store that should be
resolved now. Please check the Music Store again. All features should be working well.
