No responsive MacBook pro

i have had my MacBook pro for approximately 1.5years and in the last month I have been having problems with the systems responsiveness. at first I thought that I needed a system update and that the lag was do to my heavy application use and an error with Safari, but recently it has gotten much worse. music playing through iTunes would skip, my browsers (safari or firefox) would freeze, quit and freeze again upon restarting. for work, I am frequently running a browser, my finder, preview, iTunes and imaging program and Excel. prior to this month the simultaneous use of these applications has never been a problem. today, after many browser/application freezes and forced restarts (upon the system freezing and sitting for more than 5 minutes, I would shut down with the power button), the system would not reboot. currently, it plays the opening jingle, white pin wheel "thinks" then goes to a Mac version of BSOD. the mouse icon is sometimes visible and the screen sometimes changes shades. I am dreading taking it to the apple store and have no idea what the problem is so I am open to suggestions and insight! thanks much! (I also apologize for any errors... I'm typing this on my iPhone...)

It's hard to say what's going on here, but a good place to start would be to run the extended version of the Apple Hardware test and see if you get anything in the form of an error code. If you do, then that would indicate a hardware problem that you would need to address.
Freezing can be either software or hardware related. A common cause is a hard drive that has started to fail, so probably the first thing you should do if you haven't already is to make a good up to date backup of your data and keep it up to date.
You can open Disk Utility and check to see that the SMART status is verified. You can also run SMART Utility:

SMART will give you a more comprehensive analysis of your hard drive and may be able to detect impending hard drive failure sooner. You can download the demo and run it several times for free.
It may also help to boot from your install disc and repair your boot disk. It's important to do this when you've been forced to shut down using the power button.
You can also try reinstalling the OS, but have a good backup first.
Also, check your RAM and be sure that it is all recognized and working.
If you go to the Apple Store, they can run a hardware test from their store feed, and if your mac isn't working well enough to troubleshoot yourself, this would be a good option.

  • Macbook Pro 13" late 2013 no response after efi update

    Yesterday I installed the recommended EFi firmware update (either 1.2 or 1.3, I can't find out yet), everything installed fine and run well. In the evening I put my mbpro into sleep mode, today in the morning I was not able to restart it. If I press the power button, only the startup sound is played.
    After pressing the power button, display (intern and extern) remains black, only the white apple on the cover is illuminated. No keyboard response and backlight either. Remote access also not possible.
    I did reset the SMC (left shift+ctrl+alt+power) -> the charger LED showed the expected reaction. But nothing changed afterwards.
    Anyone's got the same effect? What can I do? Please help. Many thanks in advance.

    Short update: After reading a while I tried several keyboard shortcuts during start up ... and I solved the issue:
    Hold Command + Option + 'p' + 'r' during startup. This zaps the PRAM (Parameter RAM), an option that long-time Mac users will remember. Press and hold the key combination until you hear the second set of chimes. Zapping the PRAM returns it to its default configuration for display and video settings, time and date settings, speaker volume, and DVD region settings.
    Thanks to all people who document such issues and its solution.

    In the link you posted it states that the Nikon 810 requires ACR 8.6 or newer.
    Version of ACR are specific to versions of Photoshop. You cannot use 8.6 nor even 7.0.in CS5.
    I believe that ACR 6.7 is the latest that will work with CS5, so make sure you have this installed and get rid of ACR 7.
    Having 2 versions of ACR will cause problems.
    You have already downloaded DNG Converter 8.7.1.
    Have you double clicked the DMG file to allow you to install DNG Converter on your computer?
    Be aware that DNG converter is a stand-along application and not a plug-in.
    You need to open DNG converter at select the FOLDER that contain your .NEF files.
    Don't open the folder and try to select individual files, it doesn't work that way.
    After converting your D810 files to DNGs you can then open the DNGs in CS5
    The problem is your camera didn't exist when CS5 & its version of ACR was developed.
    i don't use Lightroom, but the list mentions Lightroom 5.6 as needed to open D819 so your 3.6 version of LR won't cut it.

    Have not used my macbook pro for couple of months and now she is frozen - opens to wallpaper on desktop of snow leopard but absolutely no response with mouse or track pad . Screen goes blank after 5 mins then the only response is from the power button . When pressed the screen lights up with window asking if i want to shut down or.....enter has no response . Only option is to force shutdown and restart yet this does not resolve issue.....back to square one!!!!

    If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out these instructions.

    Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities.  It sounds like you are trying to use your MacBook Pro with a Thunderbolt Display in closed clamshell mode (MacBook Pro closed), but sometimes the display doesn't stay on.  I found an article that talks about closed clamshell mode.  You would have to fulfill the following requirements to use your display this way:
    Requirements for closed display mode:
    Power adapter
    External keyboard, mouse, or trackpad
    External display

  • Macbook pro 2011 mouse / keyboard not response in heavy load

    When I am playing games in the 2011 Macbook pro. Mouse clicks / keyboard sometimes not response or delay, this occur when the machine under heavy load.
    This won't happened in my old BLACK core duo Macbook.
    Does everyone notice this?

    If your machine is less than a month old, you should use your warranty and call AppleCare (you have 90 days of phone support) or take your machine back to the Apple Store (make an appointment with the Genius Bar first) and let them deal with the issue.
    If yours is the 13" model, there is a thread on here (somewhere) about trackpad and keyboard failures when also using Bluetooth, I think (don't quote me on that - I don't have the affected machines so I don't follow the thread too closely).
    But I do believe that Apple is aware of the issue and had 'fixed' it in either a patch preceding 10.9.4 or in 10.9.4 itself.

    At startup hold down the Option/Alt key and from the screen that comes up select your OS X partition to start the computer from. Then use the Boot Camp Assistant app to Remove Windows and the partition you reated for it and it will Automatically place the space you allocated for the Windows install back into the OS X partition.
    NOTE:
    Do NOT use Disk Utility to erase the partition that was created for the Windows install. Use the Boot Camp Assistant app again to do that.

    I was really excited to order it and I specked it up as much as possible with 8Gb Memory and 7200rpm drive and 3.06 intel core 2 duo processor.
    Bought through my employee purchase scheme it cost me £2311.23, I was happy to spend it knowing that I’d got the fastest mac book pro available.
    My partner and I are both designers working in graphics and we own and use nothing but Mac’s for this both at home and at work, between us we now own 3 Mac book Pro’s, 1 G5 2 iPhones and 2 iPods.
    We count ourselves as loyal Apple customers and we really believe in your brand and it’s standard of quality, not only when it comes to products but service too.
    I think this is why I was so disappointed to find out that 19days after my new Macbook Pro was delivered on 26th March Apple brought out a new one, with no prior warning.
    It was my understanding that Apple had countdowns before new products were launched but there seemed to be no announcements of this new version being forthcoming on your site or any forums, when I was looking into purchasing mine. So I’m saddened to find that a mere few weeks after buying my Mac a better faster version is available and for less money too at £1986.93 (a saving of £324.30)
    Unfortunately after telephoning one of your customer service advisors - on 14th April, I’ve been informed I cannot exchange my Mac for the newer release as I am 5 days past the return terms. This understandably leaves me feeling incredibly saddened as I placed my trust in Apple and the honesty of the brand to be rewarded with a more expensive, out of date Mac book Pro a few weeks after I took delivery of it. I feel a bit cheated, especially after spending so much money it feels as though I’ve been willfully mislead by apple and now I’m left without any option but to like it or lump it. Couldn’t Apple have informed me of their forthcoming new release when they saw the order I was putting through, and allowed me to decide if I wanted to wait for the newer and cheaper model. It feels slightly dishonest to me that Apple would knowingly sell a more expensive product that was about to become outdated.
    I understand that it’s within Apple’s rights and the terms I agreed to on purchase, but I feel as though given that I’m a loyal home and professional user of Apple products some sort of gesture of good will would go a long way to re-establish my trust in Apple.
    I hope to hear from you soon concerning this matter.

    Prouser: If it was your understanding that Apple regularly provided "countdowns" prior to the launches of new products, you were sadly and utterly mistaken. Apple is famous throughout the industry and the world for its secrecy about new product releases. Always has been. Probably always will be. Should Apple completely shut down sales of its current products by preannouncing the arrival of their replacements? If it did, the new models would have to be priced higher to offset the cost of remaindering existing inventory of the previous models.
    Everyone understands that technology marches relentlessly onward, growing more powerful and less expensive at every step. No matter when you buy, whatever you've bought will be succeeded by something faster and cheaper within weeks or months. How long would you have had to own your new MBP before a new model appeared, in order not to feel cheated? 21 days? 35? 60? Four months? A year? My first-generation unibody MBP is now 16 months old. Should I be outraged that Apple has introduced not one, not two, but three new iterations of 15" MBPs since I bought it? Well, I'm not. That's because I paid what I thought was a fair price for it when I bought it, and it did then and still does today everything I bought it for and more. The same can be said of yours. You got a great computer at a price you considered fair. Be happy about it.

  • Macbook Pro not turning on and having no responses

    Hi there.
    I recently bought a macbook pro, I had been having trouble with my internet connections then when I finally have it sorted out the computer just turned off out of the blue.   I've tried researching and using the troubleshooting methods i've found online but they dont seem to be having any response.  I have the charger plugged in and its flickering a light green.  I'm really unsure of what to do, If anyone has any idea of what could be wrong with it please let me know or know of another way to troubleshoot it?

    If the Mac gives no response at all and the pilot light on the charger cable is flickering, there might not be enough power in the battery and the charger not getting any across. What do the battery charge indicator lights show? See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3205
    If there's an issue with the battery and/or the charger, you will have to take the Mac to an Apple Store or Service Provider for further diagnosis and resolution.

  • MacBook Pro will not start. No response at all.

    Im asking this on behalf of my sister. She had a hard week (imac Video card/ HDD died). She resorted to use her Macbook Pro while her iMac was at apple being repaired.
    Long story short, she got upset and hit the keyboard with her fist. She said her computer immediatly shut down, and when trying to boot it, nothing happens. No response from anything, no led, no hdd noise, nothing. Figuring the the thing is 4 years old, and out of warrenty, i figured id take a peak inside. Upon oepning it, i found the keyboard plug loose. Connected it, and put it back together enough to try and boot it. Still not so much as a peep.
    What would be a likely suspect at this point, what sits just below the keyboard that would cause this. Its a long shot, but i figured id ask.Thank for any help.

    She damaged it, possibly injuring the motherboard, unseating the HDD interface, ...
    I am trying to write sympathetically, but the Genius Bar needs to examine it and give you an estimate.

    you can't add or mofidy partition numbers. especially not if and once you have windows installed.

    Paragon CampTune
    Paragon CampTune is a commercial product that is designed expressly for this task. http://www.paragon-software.com/home/camptune/ It consists of a downloadable ISO that needs to be burned to a disc and booted from in order to resize the partitions costs US$19.95.
    Securing Dual-System Configuration
    Imaging is still the most affordable and robust way to secure computer data. Unfortunately Mac OS X backs up only HFS+ volumes, leaving Windows with dual-system configurations unsecured. You can permanently lose all of your data unless you have a Windows-compatible backup solution.
    Paragon’s CampTune and Paragon’s Drive Copy for Mac can secure the entire dual-system configuration. CampTune creates traditional images of volumes or entire hard disks, Drive Copy can copy them to other disks. In case of an emergency, you can restore the previously created image or copy all your data back to its original state.
    GParted Live
    GParted Live is similar to CampTune as it is also distributed as a bootable image that needs to be copied to a CD/DVD or USB flash drive. As free and open source software, distributed under the GPL, it will always be available free. Since it has more functions than CampTune, it may be harder for folks who are not as experienced with partitioning hard drives. http://gparted.sourceforge.net/
    iPartition
    Coriolis Systems' iPartition is a £29.95 ($44.95 US) utility that runs in Mac OS X and allows resizing of all of the relevant partition formats, including HFS+, FAT32, and NTFS. It provides a Mac-oriented user interface that may be easier to manage than some of the free utilities. As it is not capable of resizing the boot disk, it requires a bootable external disk or a boot DVD. (A tool to create a boot DVD is included.)
    Paragon Partition Manager
    From the makes of CampTune is a commercial tool that is similar in functionality to GParted Live, but has a more polished/friendly user interface than GParted Live. Previously only the US$79.95 Professional version supported all the features required for this, but as of version 11 the US$39.95 Personal version has also been reported to work. http://www.paragon-software.com/home/pm-personal/
    Winclone/Disk Utility
    Winclone is a free tool for creating and restoring backup images of your Windows partition. One of its key features is that it can restore to a larger partition than the one the image was created from.
    NOTE: Winclone has been discontinued, but for now remains available and capable of completing these tasks (including creating and restoring Windows 7 images).

    Disk Utility can resize HFS+ (Mac OS) partitions, but is currently incapable of resizing NTFS partitions, so you could use it to reduce the size of the HFS+ partition and create a new larger placeholder MS-DOS (FAT) partition
    The full process would be:
    Backup Windows partition with Winclone.
    (if the new Windows partition is smaller than the old one make sure you set the preferences in Winclone to save the image as an uncompressed dmg)
    Delete old Windows partition
    Resize current Mac Partition
    Create new Windows partition as MS-DOS (FAT) in free space after Mac OS partition.
    (If the new Windows partition is smaller than the old one an additional step is required: shrink the filesystem on the image by selecting Tools->Shrink Windows (NTFS) Filesystem)
    Reboot your computer for the new Windows partition to mount properly (winclone may not restore if you don't reboot)
    Restore Winclone partition over new Windows partition
    An alternate Winclone based process is described in the External Guides section
    Native OS utilities
    MR user Kazyua reports that you can use the disk management utilities provided with the current operating systems if you want to do it manually. Windows 7 and OS X both have partition resizing functions built in. In OS X, open Disk Utility and manually shrink the mac HFS+ partition by dragging the lower right corner. Then in windows go to the start menu and type "disk management" into the search box then hit enter. You should get an overview of the drives you have and the individual partitions. Right-clicking on the partition gives an "Extend Volume" option. The Windows NTFS volume should then be extended into the free space you created with Disk Utility. This method has not worked for other users, so try at your own risk.
