No restart or sleep option under special on desktop..

So, under Special on the desktop where it usually has Sleep, Restart, Shutdown option..
It has neither the sleep or restart option.. Anyone know how I can retrieve those at all..
Using a g4 with Mac OS 9.2, yes i know its an old one, im at work and thats what they have on this one computer i use..
Thanx in advance

Sometimes if I have to restart my iBook unexpectedly from a nasty system freeze, my Control Strip preference will switch to hide my control strip after I restart.
Perhaps you restarted your system improperly, and/or had to force-reboot your system recently, which may have corrupted that preference and caused simple finder to turn on? Just a thought...

  • Disable Sleep option under Apple Menu

    Hi,
Some users sometimes put my server to sleep by hitting the sleep button under the Apple menu. How can I disable this button?

The server in most installations is a very important resource. It just strikes me as a bad idea to allow anyone to use the server as a workstation, and risk taking down your whole cluster if it freezes up (or they press sleep, or do a restart).
If resources are scarce, it seems smarter to turn your server computer into a workstation, and run the Server software on an old junker. Most file server work is not compute-intensive, and does not require top-of-the-line compute power.
You can run Mac OS Server on computers as old as the beige G3 (with XpostFacto), or the Blue & White G3 directly. A used beige G3 can be had for less than US$100, if you do not already have one lying around.

  • Enrolled Macs' "Sleep" option is greyed out

    Hello,
As soon as a Mac is enrolled into our OS X Server it becomes unable to "Sleep." The Sleep option under the Apple menu is greyed out and even closing the lid will not put the Mac to sleep. This has been a big issue because it is killing our machines' battery life.
There are no management settings enabled for any of the Macs, under Profile Manager and they are not in any device groups. There are also no management settings enable for the users of the machines nor are the users in any groups. As soon as they are enrolled, the Sleep option is greyed out and nothing will allow them to sleep.
This was happening with the Server version right before Version 4. We updated hoping Version 4 would resolve this issue but it did not. All help is greatly appreciated!
    OS X Server Version 4 (14S333)
Mac Mini Server purchased in mid 2014
    2.6ghz Quad Core i7 Processor
    16gb of RAM

It appears Apple needs to fix a problem with the "Login Window" Payload in Profile Manager.
To enable sleep on a mac until the settings are pushed out again use terminal and enter the following:
    sudo pmset -a disablesleep 0
You will also need to do this if you remove the "Login Window" Payload from the settings you push out, since the mac won't revert to the working settings.
I notified Apple about this thread.
PS I was able to manually change the config profile (downloaded from Profile Manager) with text editor to get it working the way I wanted, but I only have one client computer. If you do this, there were 2 entries. I found them by searching the config for "sleep". Change the entries from true to false. You can then install the modified settings profile.

  • No Sleep/Wake button option under Settings

I just had my ipod nano replaced, and there is no Sleep/Wake button option under Settings anywhere (In Music, etc.) I had no problems finding it and setting it up in my previous nano (need to useit for the next song option when I work out.) Did Apple go away with it?

The sleep/wake button can be used for the following functions (according to the indtruction manual pdf file you referenced) - "
Music settings let you customize how you listen to and play back music on iPod nano. To see these settings, tap the Settings icon on the Home screen and then tap Music. Here are the Music preferences you can set:
    "Sleep/Wake Button
Choose whether double-clicking the Sleep/Wake button pauses or plays the current track, or plays the next track."
I used it in my previous iPod to play next track (a great option for a runner, instead of having to use the touch screen.)
However, the new iPod I was given after I started having issues with my previous one after a few weeks of use, has no way to assign any functions to the sleep/wake button, as there is no icon/option for the sleep/wake button under Settings/Music, at least not in my new iPod.
Hence I am wondering if it is a glitch in my particular iPod, and I need to get it fixed through Apple, or, given all the issues people seem to be having with sleep/wake button getting stuck after a few months of use, they decided to just disable any fuctions for it, besides the basic sleep and wake.

  • The report options under "configure" and CSV or xls.

The report options under “configure” does not give .csv or xls as options. Instead of using vi to pass data to database, is there a simple way to transfer all the results (just like the way in the report that automatically generated) to .csv or xls...
      Thanks.

    Hi,
in order to modify the report generation, you have to understand the way how TestStand works in regard of the report generation.
There is a tutorial which explains this which you can find here. But please note that the tutorial is currently undergoing an improvement process.
The reason that the report options don't give you the option for xls or csv as report is:
Neither xls nor csv are predefined. So for example measurement values in xls can be placed in a special worksheet or included in a main sheet in a certain column.
    hope this helps,

  • Wake From Sleep Option Dimmed DBT-120 ver. C1

The bluetooth wake from sleep option is disabled for my Apple wireless keyboard and mouse. I'm using the Apple recommended dlink DBT-120 adapter, version C1. Bluetooth firmware updater 1.2 says my hardware is up to date, so it won't install. Updater 1.2.1 will not run on either of my Macs (G4 MDD or G5 DP), which are both running 10.4.8.
Any ideas on getting the wake from sleep option working with the DBT-120 version C1 adapter?
    G5 2GHZ DP   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Good news - I now have full bluetooth functionality with keyboard & mouse, including wake from sleep, as well as certain start-up key combos. Here's how it did it, after reading numerous related Discussion posts:
    - I gave up on the DBT-120 version C1 adapter, and got an older D-Link DBT-120 version B3 on eBay. The collective experience in the Discussions, and my own, show that the current Apple bluetooth firmware updaters (1.2 & 1.2.1) do not work with the newer DBT-120 version C1. Too bad this isn't clearly explained on Apple's download pages, or in the updater readme files.
    - To help ensure a successful firmware update, I unplugged all other USB devices except the wired mouse & keyboard, booted Panther 10.3.6 from a firewire backup drive, ran no other applications, and prevented the Mac from sleeping.
    - I used bluetooth firmware updater 1.2 (not 1.2.1) to update the firmware on the version B3 adapter. It does indeed take about 15 minutes to complete the firmware update, and goes through several write and wait cycles during the process.
    - After the update was completed, I shut down, and totally removed power from the computer & all peripherals for a few minutes before restarting.
    - Upon restarting, I had to delete the old C1 adapter based keyboard & mouse pairings from Bluetooth Preferences, and create new pairings using the upgraded B3 adapter. (I also marked the keyboard & mouse as Favorites.) I'm guessing this was necessary because some of the bluetooth pairing information must be stored in the bluetooth adapter - it's not all stored in OS X's preferences.
Aside from being able to wake from sleep, the Apple-upgraded DBT-120 (B3) enables smoother mouse operation and more reliable right-clicking.
Guess I'll have to find another use for my new DBT-120 version C1 adapter, unless Apple eventually comes out with an updated bluetooth firmware upgrade for it. Hello, Cupertino?

  • No sleep option, just lock or shut down?

A friend of mine has come across a problem. Her laptop no longer has a sleep option, she just has the option to lock the computer or shut it down. She used to have the option to sleep, change identities and restart the computer but no longer has those options. How does she go about getting the sleep option back.??

What pc? What OS? What exactly has happened and what solutions did she try?

  • No Sleep Option in Windows 7

I just got a new MacBook Pro with Retina display and bootcamped it with Windows 7 Professional.  After running windows update, there were some issues with the keyboard and there was no sleep option in the power management settings.
I repaired the bootcamp drivers from the DVD I had burned and that fixed both problems.
After that I started having problems where the computer wouldn't wake from sleep.  Sometimes it would make noice and the capslock light would go on and off, but the only way to get the display to turn on was to plug in an external display or turn off the computer.
Most of the time the computer wouldn't sleep at all and would just shut down.  When restarting windows, I would be offered the option to start in safe mode and after logging in, I had a message that windows had not been properly shut down.
Today, after booting into windows, I no longer had the sleep option in the shutdown menu or power management.  I tried running the repair from my bootcamp drivers DVD again, but it didn't restore the sleep option.
I'm guessing this is a driver or firmware problem.  Has anyone managed to fix it?

I just found this post in a post related to the Thunderbolt ethernet adapter.
"I successfully installed the driver in Window 7 per Benjamin C's instructions. Yes the Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter does work in Windows 7 Boot Camp, however the SLEEP MODE is disabled after installing the driver. (I am using MacBookPro-Retina)
Somehow Windows complains that the firmware does not support (S3) Sleep mode.
It's unreasonable for a notebook not to be able to quickly go into sleep mode and wake up from it. Hibernate just takes too long.
Apple, please respond to this issue."
I am currently using the Thunderbolt adapter and I am curious if that is the cause. I will have to try to disable the driver that I installed for it to see if it corrects the issue. However, I need the adapter, so I am not sure exactly how to deal with this...

  • "Sleep" option disappeared from power options???

So I have my laptop's power options for closing the lid to sleep, but instead of going to sleep each time I close the lid, it is instead going into hibernation every single time. When I try to fix the issue, the whole "Sleep" option is not even
listed under Power Options > Advanced Settings > Power buttons and lid > Lid close action.
From the drop-down menu, the only three options I see are "Do nothing," "Hibernate," and "Shut down."
    WTF is going on?

    Hi,
Meanwhile, are you able to find the sleep option in other location? Such as in the power button?
Regarding to the driver, I suggest you uninstall the original driver, then reboot mahcine, it will automatically install the driver again, check if issue persists.
Check your power management settings in BIOS, make sure that sleep mode is turned on in BIOS, It's recommended to refer to the manufacture user manual.
Update the BIOS, make sure to have the latest BIOS version

  • Sleep option

My Macbook Pro suddenly takes time to go to sleep when I selct the sleep option. How can I remedy this

Add me to the list of problematic sleep issues with MBP's. I first thought it was the new G-Tech drives causing the problem but after a full 8 hours of diagnostics on my own and with Apple I simple give up.
Not really I'll be *** if I let this defeat me.
Things that I've done to no avail:
Note: this is with NOTHING connected.
    1. Created new Adm user account.
    2. Disabled all the below:
    a. Sharing
    b. BT devices
    c. Put the HD to sleep when possible
    d. Wake for network access
    e. Secure virtual memory
    f. iDisk syncing
    g. Airport
    3. Reset PRAM/NVRAM and SMC
    4. Deleted
    a. (From the HD) /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
    b. (From the HD) /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist
    c. (From the Home Folder) ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
the tilde [~] indicates your home user directory, i.e. /Users/username)
    d. Restarted computer
d1.This was very promising because after the computer restarted, I pressed sleep and it it was
almost instant. However after restarting it was back to it's old ways.
    5. Removed all my login items (4). Canon Scanner Network, Growl, Diskwarrior, and Dropbox.
    6. Started up in Safe mode.
    Any suggestions?

  • Mac wont shut down, restart or sleep - corrupted software update?

My Mac Pro (2007 - OSX 10.6.7) will no longer shut down, restart or sleep. When I try to shut down, it logs me out of my user account, shows the light blue screen, momentarily shows the Leopard space background screen, before showing the blue screen again, and finally returning to the login screen prompting for my user/password.
The only way to poweroff from this point is to hold down the power switch until it forces a power down. This issue has been present for the last two weeks or so ever since I did a Software Update containing a security update. Initially it just failed to perform that update, although after a few days it did do the update, seemingly by fluke. After that, the problem persisted and now there is a new update (Fonts) which again fails to update.
I have tried all of the following:
Power off Mac, unplug power and leave for a few seconds
Power on Mac holding down Ctr + Opt + R + P (resetting PRAM etc)
Boot up from install CD and perform Disk repair (it did find problems with the disk and repaired them)
    Check and repair permissions
Delete Software Update related plists & caches from ~/Library and /Library
Still the problem persists. Examining the logs shows me this:

I can paste the crash report referred to in the logs if that would be helpful but for now will leave it out as it's huge and largely full of gobledygook.
I'm at my wits end now. I've always been very proud that in ~4 years of Mac ownership I've never had to reinstall OSX - something I used to do on an anual basis with Windows. My next step probably is a full reinstall, but I really do consider it a drastic step and a last resort.
Here's hoping that the Mac Support Community can help me out
    Thanks in advance.

As a followup, upon the advice from someone else I created another user account (non admin) and logged in as that user. From that account I could successfully power down.
I'm still convinced the issue is related to Software Update as examining the logs showed none of the Software Update related entries as above:

HELP...   Since last week, I can not awake from sleep. After reading a review I downloaded Deep Sleep, but after the first deep sleep, my MBP (late 2011 with Mountain Lion), developed a problem restarting from sleep. I straight away uninstalled Deep Sleep, but the problem has increased.
Now when I try to awake from sleep, a grey screen with the apple logo appears with a progress bar underneath it, which slowly moves to the forelast indicator, then it stops and a audio signal starts.  Three bleeps and pause.
Then when I press the on/off botton and restart the system, the underneath error reports appears with the heading  RAPPORTD unexpectedly failed.
    Can any one help?
