No Restore CD's can I use a Tiger disc?

Hello,
My little brother lost the restore cd's for his iMac ages ago, and it's got little things wrong with it here and there, so a factory restore would be ideal, accept we don't have the restore discs.
I do have a Tiger install disc, which works fine as I have used it on a Powermac G4. I'm just worried if I format the iMac, and reinstall with the Tiger disc, will I lose applications such a Photo Booth.
It's an iMac G5 with a built in iSight, but it is not intel based.

A retail Tiger disk will not have any of the bundled apps - just the OS. It will work, but no iLife or anything else.
It is worth contacting Apple to see what they can do to either replace them or to sell you new ones.

There's nothing at the Apple Store. Whatever you need you will have to get elsewhere. You can download Mountain Lion if you have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and an Apple ID. See:
Upgrading to Snow Leopard, Lion, or Mountain Lion
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will receive physical media - DVD - by mail.
Third-party sources for Snow Leopard are:
    Snow Leopard from Amazon.com
    Snow Leopard from eBay
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.
Before upgrading check that you computer meets the minimum requirements:
    Snow Leopard General requirements
      1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
      2. 1GB of memory
      3. 5GB of available disk space
      4. DVD drive for installation
      5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may
          apply.
      6. Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
First, you need to upgrade to Snow Leopard 10.6.8 as stated above.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
Before upgrading check that you computer meets the minimum requirements:
    Lion System Requirements
      1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or
          Xeon processor
      2. 2GB of memory
      3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
      4. 7GB of available space
      5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
Be sure your computer meets the minimum requirements:
Apple - OS X Mountain Lion - Read the technical specifications.
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
      1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
      2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)

You might be able to depending on the age of the disc and the model of your newer used iMac. Only way to tell is to pop in the DVD and see if you can install the iLife programs.

  • Can I use an USB disc with my macbook pro bought in 2005.  What capacity will it take 2.00 or 3.00?

can I use an USB disc with my macbook pro bought in 2005.  What capacity will it take 2.00 or 3.00?

The first MacBook Pro's were not released until the beginning of 2006, and they had USB 2 ports.
Anything available new in 2005 would have been a PowerBook G4 and they also had USB 2 ports.
A USB 3 disk will just transfer data slower then it could do, if you plug it into a USB 2 port though, so you can buy either.

Yes, as long as the machine meets the system requirements for the software you can install and activate it.  Your license allows you to have the software installed and activated on two machines.

  • Can I use my Tiger install disc on more than one computer

I have a Powermac G4 15" and an imac G4 17". The p-mac has Tiger and the Imac has Panther. Can I use the install disc that came with the p-mac to install Tiger on the imac?
    Thanks for a great forum!
    G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
PowerMac G4s never were 15". Don't you mean Powerbook G4 15"? If you mean Powerbook G4 15" and it came with Tiger, then the answer is no, as my FAQ explains:
    http://www.macmaps.com/upgradefaq.html#SYSTEMSPECIFIC
If you mean a PowerMac G4 with a 15" Apple LCD, it may have come with an older operating system. Use the articles I link to on:
    http://www.macmaps.com/macosxnative.html#IDENTIFY
    to identify your Mac.
    And use
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25517
to determine which operating system came with that Mac.
If both machines came with pre-Mac OS X 10.4, they can use a Mac OS X 10.4 Family pack if they meet specs for the installation.

  • Can I use a recovery disc on a new 120 GB SSD for HP Envy 17 that previously had 2 500GB RAID 0?

I currently have a HP Envy 17-2070NR.  I would like to install a new SSD (120 GB) to replace one of the 500 GB HD that are currently in the laptop (the 2 drives are set up RAID 0).
If I install the new drive and remove the two old ones can I use the recovery discs to reinstall windows/drivers/default programs?

The 500GB MyBook Pro should work fine. Just be sure to use a Firewire connection (not USB) to your Mac and format the drive as Mac OS Extended - Journaled. It will come from the factory as FAT32, so you'll need to reformat it. But wait - don't reformat it until you offload the ButtonManager, FW Driver and Retrospect software. You will need the first two to install your drive.
And that's one of the reasons I stay away from the MyBook drives - they were really designed for Windows systems, not Macs. For one, they have their own FireWire drivers and I see no reason to be required to install device-specific drivers on my Mac in order to use a consumer-grade hard drive. As far as I'm concerned, that's just bad design (or, perhaps design for systems other than Macs ...).
The 500GB Lacie Big Disk did get a bunch of bad reviews. However, the 500GB Lacie d2 Extreme is the same price and has much better reviews. The Lacie d2 Extreme drives are quite reliable; I have many and not one of them has failed me over the years. The 320GB d2 Extreme is currently $140 at newegg.com. See how that compares to the price of the MyBook.

  • Can I use a recovery disc of a differnt serial number in my laptop?

I had a issue with the recovery disc which I got from HP, the first disc stops at 24% and further it does nothing. So I have ordered another recovery disc, when I ordered by mistake I have entered my product number correctly but entered serial number (wrong#) 2CXXXXXXRE instead of (correct #) 2CXXXXXXRF and booked the recovery disc. I dont have an option to cancel the order in the site. So can I use this recovery DVD to recover my laptop?
    Laptop Model: HP Pavilion dv6
    Current OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit + SP1
    Recovery OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit + SP1

You will have to contact HP to get an answer on that question.

  • Restored system, but can't use pro apps.

My Macbook crashed about a week ago. I took it to an Apple repair centre to have it fixed. Before I did that, I backed up my HD using Target Disk Mode with my other mac as the host. Now my MacBook is fixed, and I restored the system (using Target Disk Mode again, erase what was on the hard drive on the MacBook, then I copied everything on my backup drive onto the MacBook hard drive. But it couldn't start up, so I reinstalled Leopard using the option which keeps the previous files).
Now my problem is, although it looks like the system is my old system, when I open Logic Pro 8, it asks me to input the serial number again. Also, my QuickTime Pro now becomes the rubbish QuickTime Player. The thing is I can't find the serial number for Logic Studio 8, nor the installation disks. They are in my other home, which I won't go back for another 3 months. So my question is: is there any way I can get a new serial number from Apple, or any other way that lets me use Logic again?

I'm assuming you used target disk mode and just copied over your entire hard drive. You can not do this using OSX. You could have launched Disk Utility and used its restore function or a third party program such as SuperDuper.

  • Can I use the install disc from my macbook to upgrade my imac from Tiger?

I have an imac which is on Tiger. I recently bought a macbook which is on snow leopard. I have the install discs for Snow Leopard and I was wondering if I could use them to upgrade my imac.
Also, if I can, will it delete existing files and software that's already on it?
    Thanks.

No. Besides being illegal the DVD that came with MacBook are hardware specific to it and will either not work at all or not work properly if you attempt to use them on the iMac.
Just go out and buy the $29 DVD for Snow Leopard. It is easier that way.

  • Looking to buy archival discs for my GH82N drive - can I use dvd-r discs?

Looking to purchase archive discs but not finding out many facts about the gh82n drive on my HP computer.  Will I be able to write to dvd-r and dvd+r discs alike?
    Thanks!

The GH82N  is capable of using DVD-R or DVD+R media. That said, I use only DVD+R.

  • Using Retail Tiger Discs

I just have a small query about using some retail Tiger DVDs I bought. My eMac 700 SuperDrive came with Tiger pre-loaded (definitely upgraded by the 3rd party vendor). If I ever required a re-installation, would I be able to use my retail Tiger DVDs to install Tiger, or is it possible that the vendor used version-specific media to install the OS?
    Thanks in advance.
    Miel.

    Hi.
Retail full install Tiger DVD media will work fine if you need to reinstall the system.
You will probably need the original install disks that came with the machine (grey ones) in order to reinstall the iLife applications (in case you didn't get an iLife install disk).
The vendor may have used Tiger Upgrade disks, which in some cases were shipped along with machines with Panther pre-installed, after the Tiger release date.
    Good Luck.
