No Save in FCP X?

I've opened FCP X now about 1/2 a dozen times, hoping that what I witnessed the last time was just initial shock and awe at it's uselessness.
I took my time to move clips, cut, add color correction, titles and basically manage clips as I would in FCP.
Then I tried to do a quick save with the infinity button + S. No go. Ok, fair enough, went up to the menu under File and went to select "Save As"
or "Save project" or "Save Copy As"..... nada. NO OPTION TO SAVE?!?!?!?!?!?!?! REALLY? I know Apple is sound as a pound, but FCP has crashed in
the past. It doesn't happen often, but it has. Saving projects is probably one of the most important things you can do every 10-30 seconds while editing on the fly. It's two buttons at the same time and it's done, your project is safe.
Then I realized I had NO IDEA where my project was.
I'm simply exhausted with how much this new app is beyond bad. I do not see an update fixing this.
My biggest concern is how long Lion will support FCP 7 - seriously.

I have the same concern about the OS outgrowing FCP7.
Am I crazy but is FCS 3 no longer available through Apple?  That's really ominous.  I can't ever recall the launch of a new product met with such universal distane.
I never would have imagined a day that began with the release of FCPX would end with doing serious research into Adobe Premiere.

  • Save a FCP 6 project as version 5?

Is there a way to save a Final Cut Pro 6 project so that it can be opened in FCP 5?

Select everything in the Browser (CMD-A), then go FILE>EXPORT>XML. Make it Version 3. Then in FCP 5, IMPORT that XML into an empty project.

  • Save out FCP clips to iMovie-friendly format?

Any tips on if it's possible to save out a final cut clip to an iMovie-friendly format? I have a project in iMovie and need this one clip for it.

We do this all of the time. From FCP: File>export>quicktime. Save where you can find it and import to imovie. Drawback is that you can't edit the clip other than cut it or extract audio. Your clip comes in as one big clip.

  • Cannot save work FCP displays "Operation Not Allowed"

I began working on a new project last week delievered to me as media files and project file on a 500 G. LaCie drive.
After working a couple of hours on this project, I began to get a warning box "Operation Not allowed" everytime I tried to save or auto-save. It will not save even upon closing of the project, so I've lost a lot of work so far.
I had a workaround for a while, but that began to bug out as well. I don't have the problem on my other projects and media which are on other media drives.
Any way I can get rid of this problem?

make sure that 'ignore ownership on this volume' is checked.
you get to it though 'Get Info' - (right click on the drive icon to bring up the selection).

  • Saving Files on FCP 6.0.2 and XSan

    Hello All,
We're running into very frustrating issues as we are trying to save and open Final Cut Pro project files. We are currently using an XSan with ACLs set up to store FCP documents and related files. The six workstations aren't directly attached to the SAN, they connect via GigE to AFP shares (not an ideal solution, but it's what we can afford right now). It should be noted that our setup is currently using the "Golden Triangle" of directory services (AD user accounts and groups).
In December we upgraded our XSan to version 2 (which was a nightmare in itself), and all of our clients were upgraded to 10.5 with FCS2. After the upgrades, a few issues have arisen:
    1. When a user attempts to save a FCP project, sometimes they receive the error message that the file is locked. From what I read on apples support site, this is due to permissions-- a file cannot be saved by one person, and then opened and saved by another. If the ACLs set on the folder reflect the groups that have full access to the files in which the project resides (recursively), why is this an issue? Or is this just another case of bad execution on apples part?
    2. After concluding a "Save As", most of the time the alternate project file is able to be opened. We've run into several instances, however, when the project file is a very small size (16k or so), and gives the error message "Unable to open project file".. and it's pretty much trash. In these cases, the autosaves are behaving in a similar manner, being a very low size and not opening.
So my question is, does this all sound like permissions issues.. or is there something inherently wrong with the XSan at this point (e.g. corruption)? How are other people using XSan volumes in conjunction with FCP 6.0.2/FCS2 to edit and store files? Perhaps we're going about the whole setup the wrong way..
Thanks for your time and any advice you can provide..

    Hi,
Thanks for taking the time to reply.
    We have six producers.
Each producer has their own storage folder on the SAN: Producer 1, Producer 2, Producer 3, Producer 4, Producer 5, Producer 6. Each of these folders are located in One sharepoint called "Producers".
So we have one main producer, Well call Joan Smith. Joan has full access, recursively throughout her folder, which is producer 1. Joan has interns that work for her, who use an account called pro1edit1. Pro1edit1 has full access to Producer 1's folders as well, recursively. Joan and her intern never work on the same project at the same time from two different workstations. Each project is edited by one and only one user from one workstation.
Either Joan or her intern logs into the Mac (using either Joan's username/password, or the intern using their generic username and password [pro1edit1]). These accounts are AD Accounts. After a login, OD sends MCX policies to the clients (such as auto-mounting the AFP share points ["Producers", for instance] with their username and password). The user browses to their folder. If they create a new project, the create a folder with the project name. They then open FCP and set the settings (scratch, etc) to point to that folder. They save a project file with the name of the project within this same folder, keeping everything as one general "package" in the folder. For instance: /Volumes/Producers/Producer\ 1/5-Minute-Piece/FiveMinutePiece.fcp. All of the other folders are also located in here, scratch disks, autosaves, captures, etc.
When the user is done, they save, close final cut, and quit.
The next say, either Joan or her intern come in to do some work on the project. They log into one of the workstations, and they open the file. They conclude some edits, and upon trying to save the file they receive the error message that the file is locked. They then save the file as an alternate filename. Sometimes this works. Sometimes it says it saves it fine, but the next attempt at opening the file yields the error that the project cannot be opened. Upon inspection of the file, it's about 16k in size.
Using Producers folder/sharepoint, the permissions are as follows:
    Producers:
<AD Domain>\grpStaffProduction: Allow: Read Only: This folder. *
<AD Domain\grpProEdit: Allow: Read Only: This folder. **
<AD Domain\grpProduction: Allow: Read Only: This folder. *
<AD Domain\grpEditAdmins: Allow: Full Control: This Folder, Children, all descendants. [inherited]
<AD Domain\grpDomainAdmins: Allow: Full Control: This Folder, Children, all descendants. [inherited]
Local Administrator: Allow: Full Control: This Folder, Children, all descendants. [inherited]
    POSIX:
    admin: RW: This Folder
    staff: R: This folder
    Others: None: This folder
Using Producer 1 (within the above folder), the permissions are as follows:
<AD Domain>\JoanSmith: Allow: Full control: This Folder, Children, all descendants.
<AD Domain>\pro1edit1: Allow: Full Control: This Folder, Children, all descendants.
<AD Domain\grpEditAdmins: Allow: Full Control: This Folder, Children, all descendants. [inherited]
<AD Domain\grpDomainAdmins: Allow: Full Control: This Folder, Children, all descendants. [inherited]
Local Administrator: Allow: Full Control: This Folder, Children, all descendants. [inherited]
    POSIX:
    admin: RW: This folder.
    staff: R: This folder.
    Others: R: This folder.
+* This group is used for another producer folder. This allows AFP to mount the share, and for the users to see their producer folder.+
+** This group is used for another producer folder. This allows AFP to mount the share, and for the users to see their producer folder.+
+* Joan, all other users in production, and their interns are apart of this group. This allows them to mount the AFP share and see which folders they have access to.+
So that's some more detail on our permissions and general workflow. We're up for suggestions. I appreciate your response!

  • Only One At A Time FCP to Compressor

I have multiple movie tracks and want to Que. up compressor. In FCP I do file export to compressor - compressor opens just fine - I add the settings and destination and then when trying to go back to FCP to get the next track I see the FCP save icon, FCP will not respond. If I export QT movie (not self contained) and then import into compressor everything is OK -- just would like to cut out the additional step of export to QT. THX

    Or, more simply:
    (a) select several sequences FIRST, BEFORE exporting to Compressor - by cmd+clicking on them in the Browser,
    then,
    (b) with them all still selected, ctrl-click (or right-click) Export:Using Compressor...

  • FCP to QT shimmers

Posted this as an iDVD problem but narrowed it to this: When I try to save a FCP file to Quicktime, it comes out with shimmering noise in high contrast areas, one scene has chairs that seem to move back and forth within the image.
Tried Streamclip from original burned dvd and exported to QT with no problems, so it seems conversion from FCP is the problem area...
Have this posted in QT forum but hope someone here might offer a clue...

    Jim,
sounds like you have some illegal levels.
try using the "broadcast safe" filter before you export, see if that improves things.
    cheers
    Andy

  • Open and work on FCP project file located at xsan volume

It is recommended by apple to *open and work on FCP project file located at xsan volume*
or we should open , work and save our FCP project file from local drive only .
Is there is risk of corrupting xsan volume if we open FCP project file placed in xsan volume .
where should be the location of FCP project files ??????
    Mac pro 2.66 , FCP 6.01, xsan 1.4

Opening a file twice is a indeed a problem. To prevent this, and for numerous other reasons, we use Open Directory. In OD you can configure that a user can login just once (concurrently).
In old versions of xsan it was not recommended to put project files on xsan, but nowadays it works fine.
Putting projectfiles on a san has the advantage that a user can work on any client. If this is not important in your environment these files can be stored locally.

  • Saving from FCP to QuickTime is distorting the video

Hello all - I'm repeatedly trying to save a FCP sequence as a QuickTime file so that I can import into iDVD. Each time I save it and then open the file in either QuickTime or iDVD, the faces in the video appear very thin (as if I had converted to a widescreen format or filter - but I didn't).
Does anyone know what might be causing this?
Thanks so much for the help.

OK, here's what's going on. When the anamorphic flag is checked, the image is displayed as 16:9. The actual media is 4:3 and it is distorted horizontally to acheive the "wide screen" look. I don't work in IDVD, so I'm not sure how you make an anamorphic dvd with it. It's pretty simple in DVDSP. As far as the quicktime goes, you can set the dimensions of your export to properly reflect the "widescreen" look, or simply change how quicktime player displays the file. I'm not on my system at the moment, but do a little exploring in quicktime player and you should be able to find it. I don't have the correct pixel dimensions on hand for the quicktime export, but if you're sole purpose is creating a dvd, that's not the way to go.

  • Export FCP project and linked media assets

Sorry everyone, I know this is an easy question but I have searched for the answer and am still very confused.  I want to save my FCP project and just the appropriate used media assets in one place so I can send a condensed version of my entire project to someone to further edit.  I know there is an easy way to do this because I have done this before, but I can't remember.
I was confused because I found a number of answers but some of them talked about how afterwards the media files will no longer be able to be tracked by the Final Cut Server?  This is what scared me.

Use FCP's Media Manager to duplicate the project media.  Be sure to include handles if needed.

  • Why is FCP Studio saving my Autosave Vault files as FC Express project files?

I have had FCPro Studio for some time now and haven't used my FC Express software for a long time, but somehow in the Autosave Vault folder, my project is being saved as a Final Cut Express Project File.  And if I try to open one of them it only produces a Error message.  How did this happen?  Is there someplace that remembers how I used to save FCE files and defaults to that or what?  I can't find anyplace in the Preferences or Settings that tell it how to save things.  Help if you can.  Thanks

Thanks for the heads up Tom on Andy's idea.  I like what Andy recommended, as I see that it will probably do the job to right the problem, however, before I do it... I do have projects that I haven't finished in FCE and don't want them messed up if ALL files will now open as FCP.  What do I do to keep things separate OR would it be better to just upgrade those projects to FCP and finish them there.  It is definitely a better program. Will the FCE projects suffer any ill effects by now being FCP projects?  OR should I just finish them in FCE and how do I keep them as such if I do the Cmd I change for the other files that need to be changed?
    Thanks, Andy and Tom,
    Jon
PS.  I changed ONE of the files that was from my FCP project and was being saved as a FCE project file and I DIDN"T change all, just the one.  This seems to be one way to keep all the other FCE project files as they should be.  I could just change one by one, only the Autosave Vault files in my FCP project that I need, and so preserve the projects that are FCE projects from changing.  First-is this a good work flow and Second-How do I get the Autosave Vault to, from now on - save my FCP project files AS FCP project files?
    Thanks

  • ?? Save Project ???

Not sure if this is possible, but if there is a way to collect all of your media used in an FCP project.
I want to save my FCP project along with all of my raw footage, txt, snd fx (everything in the browser). Im working on a big project, drawing footage from 5 separate HD, so i would like to save all the clips that are on the timeline.
    Is this possible?

    Media Manager.
    for example:

  • FCP 7.1 crashes

I've been working all day on a project without issue using FCP 7.1. After the last save all FCP crashed when exporting a Quicktime Converted movie and now I cannot open the project. I can open other projects without issue. It seem that the file corrupted when the crash occurred. I've trashed FCP prefs, cache etc. The file still will not open. It gets to a certain point loading the project and then crashes. I've also tried opening the auto saves without luck.
Does anyone know how to restore a project or can this be done?
The only thing done today was an update to the latest Pro Applications

I restarted my Mac and it seemed to clear the problem. Now the project opens.. Hmmm..
I love computers and hate them too!
    Thanks for your assistance..

  • FCP compatible with FC Express???

I edited a video I need to transfer to a friends Mac and he only has FCE. IS there any way for me to save my FCP file to work on Express?
    Thanks,
    cja

There are several versions of XML export from FCP. Why don't you find out which (if any) version FCE imports?
Once you know which version: Menu bar>File>Export>XML>select the version.
