No scaling with mercury engine (Cinemascope to HD for playback)

Hi
I have a Blackmagic Extreme 3D+ card installed in my 12-core Mac Pro running AE CC 2014.
When I playback an HD composition (1920x1080) the video is playback through the mercury engine fine.
But when I have a cinemascope composition (2048x858) the video is not played back because it does not fit the aspect ratio I assume.
When I playback the same resolution and aspect ratio e.g. in DaVinci Resolve the video is scaled and played back as a correct Letterbox through the same card.
Of course I can set my AE comp to HD or nest my comp into a new HD comp but it would be great if it would play out directly doing the scaling.
Is there a way to achieve this scaled playback or is Adobe doing something about it?
I think this would be very important.
Regards,
Uli

Hi
Finally Blackmagic updated their Desktop Video Software to make it "customizable" in AE 2014.
Well the setup dialogue in AE video preferences gives three options:
No output: which means "off"
center: which cuts off the picture if you are working with material wider than HD (like Scope, or everything that needs to be letterboxed)
scale to fit: which distorts the picture awfully because it fits everything into a wrong aspect ratio
What we would need is just what is in AE:
Like "fit to width" which would maintain the right aspect ratio and scale a scope into HD.
This should be possible I think. Otherwise nesting into a HD sequence is the only way again.
(DaVinci does it, easydcp does it, all with the same BM card)

Uli

  • Issues with Mercury Engine GPU acceleration and stills

Hi folks, recently made the switch to CS6 Creative Cloud and for the most part I am loving Premiere Pro CS6 except I am having one major issue. I've got a early 2011 Macbook Pro with the 1GB AMD Radeon HD 6750M video card and 16GB of RAM and I am using Lion 10.7.4. Mercury Engine GPU mode works great on this machine (fast timeline renders, accelerated effects, quick exports) except whenever I try to use a still image on the timeline. It doesn't matter if it's a JPG, TIFF, PSD, or anything else. It also doens't matter what the size of the image is either. As soon as I drop a still on the timeline the responsiveness of the entire program starts to grind to a halt. Parts of the timeline that were playing back soomthly (in GPU or software mode) now can barely play at 10-15 fps.
I don't have this issue in Software Mercury Playback mode (I just loose all the benefits of the GPU acceleration).
If I switch back to Software Mode, delete the previews and restart Premiere things go back to working well in software mode.
I'm working on projects with Canon DSLR footage (1080P 30fps) and I am working off of a fast RAID 0 hard drive set-up.
If anyone has any advice on how I can actually use the amazing GPU mode I would be most grateful.
    thanks
    Daniel

  • Having trouble with Mercury Engine, do I have this right?

Ok, so after many months of looking for a replacement for Sony Vegas Pro we decided that the Adobe solution was the best option for our needs and bought a license for CS5 and two new machines for our video editing.
The desktop is a poweful beast with the latest and greatest installed, and we also invested in a new laptop which was custom built for on the road editing. This laptop includes the GeForce GTX285M graphics engine but for some reason the Mercury engine within CS5 is not working with this card.
Can someone explain why this is the case and what the solution may be? I am new to Adobe software so have I installed evrything correctly or is there something I need to install or change within the program to get the mercury engine working with the card. I have tried the usual route with the drop down for Renderer but it is greyed out.  Help?

Hardware acceleration doesn't work, officially, with any laptop GPU chipset at this time. Search around here for the "GPU hack."

  • How can I open a project that has been created with Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration software, on my trial version of Premier Pro CC?

    Hi,
I'm working with a colleague who is using Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration software on his PC version of Premier Pro CC. I am using a mac and have a trial version of Premier Pro CC. When I try to open a project file that he has sent me I get an error message-
"Missing renderer: This project was last used with Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration (CUDA), which is either not available or not certified on this system. Mercury Playback Engine Software Only will be used."
When I click OK and locate the files I get a message saying "File format not supported".
Can anyone tell me what to do so that we can share project files?
    Many thanks,
    Jessie

Shouldn't really be the MPE at fault here ... what is the codec of the footage/sequence/project?
Second, can you create a new project in PrPro, then in the media browser, import that sequence from the other project?

  • Premiere CC 2014: Message on loading project from older version: This project was last used with Mercury Playback Engine GPU acceleration (CUDA)...

After installing Adobe CC 2014 I have each time a message when loading an old Adobe pro project. Message:This project was last used with Mercury Playback Engine GPU acceleration (CUDA), which is either not available or not certified on this system. Mercury Playback software will be used. I have very recent HP Zbook 15 with a NVIDIA Quadro K2100M. At webinar today it was explained how to solve this, but sound was not understandable at my machine at that moment. Help? What need I to do.

Problem is solved since yesterday via Adobe helpdesk. It appeared that the newest driver for the NVIDIA were note present. So after downloading the new drivers it work. But I think Adobe should mention those issues when they launch new versions of Adobe CC like in June.

  • One solution to AME stops encoding using Mercury Engine with an "Unknown Error" - Mac only

I recently switched from FCS to CS5.5 - it's been a somewhat rough ride - and I kept getting an "Unknown Error" if I tried to export a sequence while having the mercury engine gpu-enabled.
After finishing my latest project just three days ago I found a solution, go figure. Well, here it is: the offender were imported dissolves from FCP. They play perfectly in PPro, they render perfectly in software mode, but never once while using the GPU. The solution to that is equally simple: deleting the offending dissolves and create a new dissolve, same length, same effect name, nothing's changed. But now, they render just beautifully using Mercury Engine in GPU mode.
If somebody likes to look into that, I created a small project for re-checking.

Sure, no problem. Where would you like me to put it? Including the sources, its about 50MB (I replaced to original footage with low-res, low-datarate stuff). Or do you only need the project file?

  • Does Premiere Pro CS5 mercury engine work with my imac 27 inch?

I have a 27 inch imac that I bought 4 months ago.   Yesterday I upgraded my Creative Suite Production Premium CS4 to CS5.   It costs a lot more do to that when you live in Japan (about $300  more).  I installed it all and to my disappoinment I can't access PPro's  new mercury engine on 64 bit.  I read the specs and I thought my  computer is capable.  Can somebody please tell me if my specs are good?   imac is a total disappoinment in that they will not replace any  parts!!!   I have two very expensive items (imac 27 inch and Adobe  CS5).  Can I not utilize the mercury engine in P PRo?  I will be so sad  if that is the case.   I've called apple and they say they won't change  the graphic card or CPU if those are my problems. Which means I'll have  two great things, my new imac and new Adobe soft and I can't use them  together.
Anyways, here are my specs.  I hope someone can shed  some light on this matter for me.  I'm hoping I just don't have my PP settings right.  Thanks in advance!
    Model Name: iMac
    Model Identifier: iMac11,1
    Processor Name: Intel Core i7

    Harm
Thank you kindly for your reply.  I figured I was only able to use software only MPE as that is why it is all greyed out in my preferences.  I was hoping I had not done something simple that would fix the issue.
So after reading a lot on here about MPE my question is this:
Is soft only MPE 64 bit?  Is it still significantly better than my CS4 P.Pro that I had or did I just waste a crap of money on the upgrade?  What does soft only MPE have to offer?  so far my editing doesn't really seem to be much faster but I haven't put it to test yet. And of course, the render line is always red and not yellow like all those fantastic videos show when they're bragging about how cool Hardware accelerated MPE is.
If feel like I got robbed.
    Thanks for your time.
Oh, one more thing.  In the near future, "could" a driver update for my ATI Radeon HD 4850 possibly fix this issue?  imacs will NOT replace CPU or GPU.  For that, I am really, really annoyed.  The main reason I bought this computer with the specs was to use Adobe at its best.
    Regards,
    Kelly

  • Mercury Engine in After Effects CS5.5? Or, why is After Effects so much slower the Premiere Pro?

    Take this quote :
"by Todd Kopriva on Apr 25, 2010 at 8:08:14 am
'Mercury' is a marketing name for these performance improvements in Premiere Pro: - multiprocessing
    - multithreading
    - 64-bit application
    - use of CUDA to to some processing on supported hardware
The first three of these are in After Effects CS5. (The first two have been in After Effects for much longer.)"
However, if I drop my Canon 5D Mark II footage (h264) into Premiere Pro it plays back SO MUCH better then the exact same footage in After Effects. Why is that? I DO NOT have an NVideo card and I have NOT applied any effects or scaling to the clip, just raw footage dropped into each program.
I do notice that After Effects has to render to play back (green bar being generated above footage). But it does slow very slowly, like 9fps. Premier Pro seems to cruise right along at near realtime. This is 24fps 1080p footage. One other point of interest, I have encoded the clip into Cineform codec as well. On Premier Pro I can tell a difference, the cineform scrubs a lot smoother then the original H264 clip. But, again, in After effects both the h264 and Cineform clips are very slow to render and scrub.
Any improvements along these lines for CS5.5?
Am I just missing something obvious?
    Thanks for any info,
    --greg.

I think the problem is that hitting the space bar and hitting '0' (ram preview) both draw that green bar, and both seem to use it if it is already there. I guess the real difference is how that green bar gets generated. It does seem to get generated faster when I ram preview as opposed to hitting the space bar. Using both cores I have I guess (early 2009 24" iMac).
When you hit the space bar, AE TRIES to play back as it renders each frame.  Imagine what happens if it's a comp with 120 3D layers that all accept lights and cast shadows.  That's why you don't use the space bar.
In a RAM Preview, AE fills up the memory available to it with rendered frames, then plays them back from RAM.  Depending on processor speed, dimensions of comp & frame rate, this may or may not be real time, but there are ways to get real time.  With the space bar, you don't stand a chance at real time.

From what I hear new iMacs are due out soon with the new Thunderbolt (!) and Sandy Bridge processors/chipsets. Should be a LOT faster then what I have now.
For AE work I'd say maybe yes, maybe no.  To make AE REALLY speedy, you need a lot of processor cores and a boatload of RAM.  iMacs aren't known for either of those things.

  • 5.0.2 Update - Mercury Engine Error Message

    Hi,
I just installed the update. When I opened a project I was working on just before I updated to 5.0.2, I received the following message:
"The project was last used with Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration, which is not available on this system. Mercury Playback Engine Software only will be used."
Why do I suddently not have GPU Acceleration?
    Cheers, Steve

Are you using one of the "unsupported" CUDA cards? If so, you need to reapply the CUDA hack since the update overwrote the file you had manually modified.

  • About Mercury Engine in a Dell Notebook (ATI HD 7730M GPU)

    Hey, guys!
(sorry anticipately about any language errors, I'm from Brazil and try my best to say things correctly in english)
I was about to buy a new Dell notebook, the Inspiron 15r SE, that has a really great config (for my use) and comes with this ATI Radeon HD 7730M GPU.
One friend advised me to don't do this, because it lacks the GPU Mercury Engine ability.
With some research, I found that the OpenCL (ATI's equivalent to GeForce's CUDA) isn't really ready to work with CS6 GPU Mercury Engine on any PC.
So, what you guys think? Is it really the best choice, to don't buy this Inspiron because of the lack of GPU MPE or it won't change performance that much?
    Additional info:
    1. This Inspiron 15r SE config is the following:
    - i7-3612QM
    - 8GB RAM (1600 Mhz)
    - ATI Radeon HD 7730M (2GB)
    - 1TB HDD + 32GB mSATA SSD Cache
    - 15,6" screen (1920x1080)
    2. I will use only CS6, not CS5.X
So, hope you guys could help me.
If this problem isn't that bad, I'm gonna buy this Inspiron, 'cause the price is really good (to brazilian standards :/).
    Thanks!

Hey, Dave, thanks for the reply!
First: About lap/desktops, I know these things. I do have one desktop too, but as I travel every weekend I like to keep one laptop with me, you know?
Second: I did check the cards list, but they're all too expensive, or desktop, or so.
Now: My use is balanced with Photoshop, Illustrator and After Effects. I don't use Premiere that much, although sometimes I edit some stuff. Anyways, nothing intense like multiple RED footage or so. So, about the occasional use of Premiere: The CUDAs would make it insanely better to work in comparison to this ATI card?
Let's take, for comparison, my actual laptop: LG a520 (i7-2630QM, 6GB RAM, 640HDD, GeForce GT 540M 2GB- wich has CUDA but is not on the officially supported list, or is to weak, I Don't know).
My use won't get worse, right? In fact, with PS, AI and AE it will be better, I think.
In the end: I just wanna know if I'm gonna do a bad deal buying this Dell, because, specifically, of its GPU.
(Last thing: About the RAM, this Dell is expeansible up to 16GB. So, if it's the case, in the future, I get some more RAM. Thanks, anyway)

  • Mercury Engine GPU bug/error/problem

    Hi there
Im experiencing a very strange phenomenon with the Mercury Engine in hardware mode. I recently upgraded my computer so I am running on new hardware. I ran Production Premium on my laptop and my older desktop, both working without problems.
My new configuration is a 2600k i7, 16gig Ram, GTX 570. The problem will be best described with screenshots:
The top image was taken in software mode. This is the correct result, displaying like it does on my laptop and old pc. The bottom pic shows the same frame in GPU acceleration mode.
    1. It looks like the Title texts' edge is shrunk by a pixel or so.
    2. The layer below the text, the strap, is an animated AE composition. It contains a drop shadow at 50%. In hardware mode it looks like its about 20%
    3. I have a 2 pixel 40% opacity black stroke applied to the strap. In hardware mode its almost completely invisible. I think the outline is shrunk as well.
To make it even wierder, if I click on the Title layer in the preview window in Premiere, ie, if I select it, it suddenly displays correctly. When I deselect it, its wrong. If I open the title editor, the text displays correctly. When I close the title editor, its wrong again in the playback window. The straps all display correctly when I work on them in AE.
This is forcing me to switch to software mode before I render, otherwise the rendered result is faulty. I'm 99% sure its a CUDA thing.
Im running the latest nvidia drivers. Any ideas?

Actually this is how hardware mode works. I know it's wierd but its due to what is called "Linear color/ light processing" Basically it will cause the issue your seeing. Hardware mode handles video this way. Currently you can't do anything about it, sadly. I always just have to make things darker to compensate. The reason it looks correct in titler is because the titler displays the still in software mode, or at least this is what I have noticed so I assumed this a long time ago.
Basically though if you export your video in software mode then check max render quality when you export it cause the same issue that having MPE+GPU enabled does.  That's because enabling max render quality causes even software mode to use 32-bit linear color processing. So most likely I think this is what is causing the issue you're seeing. You can verify it, by setting your sequence to software mode. Then exporting and checking max render quality when you export, then looking at the end result and you'll see the opacity differences.
You can check out this thread for more in depth info.

  • Premiere cs5 mercury engine will it work without any graphic card?

HI there I have core 2quad 6600 processor of 2.4ghz, and intel classic series fb33 motherboard, with only onboard video ram shared with physical ram of 2gb.
I want to install cs5 on 64bit OS and upgrade total ram to 8 gb without buying any graphic cards(right now). Qn is will I be able to edit avchd videos? will the
mercury engine still be enabled? I know its kinda "no budget, want all qn" Right now I dont wanna buy a card as am plannin to buy new system later..
    Thanks
    Gigarigh

Yes, of course, you are correct, Harm.  I was over-simplifying.
I Took the OP's "enabled" to really mean "accelerated", and in that sense, it will not work as without the necessary graphics card there will be no acceleration.
I can certainly support your third paragraph, having just moved from a four-year-old system with a quad 3 GHz processor, 8 GB of RAM and a hacked 460 GTX graphics card, to a Sandy Bridge E system with a 3930 CPU, 32 GB of RAM but the same graphics card and HDD set up (for the moment). Your oft stated "molasses in winter" describes my old system pretty well from my present viewpoint!
The old system coped with the fairly gentle HDV, provided I kept the number of assets down, but threw a hissy fit if I tried 1920 HD, even with the Matrox (I know, I know!) I-frame codec.
    Gigarigh,
You would be better off upgrading along my path - motherboard and processor first, using as much as you can of your old system for now, as this allows much better scope for future upgrading.

  • GTX 470 or 570 for editing TIFF sequences with Mercury

Hello! II am making a short film with Cinema 4D and I'm thinking of getting either a GTX 470 or 570, does anyone know if using the mercury engine will actually improve editing speed with uncompressed 1080p TIFF sequences? All the prerendering slows down the editing process I'm on a i7-950 with 12 gb DDR3 and a ATI 5770 currently, my OS drive is also an SSD if that matters. My editing drives are just regular drives though, no RAID either. thanks!

I have a GTX 480 (with MPE hack) and a i7 980x, 24GB ram and a 3-disk Raid 0.  I've never been able to get a TIFF sequence to playback in real time.  The best I get is probably a choppy 4 frames per second.    I know this doesn't answer your question entirely, but maybe it can help a tad.
I myself I'm trying to get find a way to playback TIFF sequences.  I'm going to be setting up a 4-disk Raid 0 on an eSata raid box, but I'm thinking at some point it's just getting bottled necked at my port connection.  Not sure.  Others can probably shed more light on the Raids.
The best way I've been able to adapt so far is to create annoying proxy sequences (hence my repeat posts about Premiere needing proxy capabilities).  I drop my TIFF sequence in a new sequence.  Render it out in low rez. Drop that new low rez version onto the same sequence so now it has two--one HD 1080 and SD 720 (ok, so it's not really SD).  I turn on the SD version and the other one off.  I make my cuts and edits on my sequences and then when everythings all nice and purdy, I flip the switch back on the HD version and I'm ready for final rendering.
I have my "SD" version set at 720 so it's obviously smaller than the other clips so I don't inadvertantly leave it on for the final render.
Not a great workflow and adds some steps, but that's been my best workflow so far.
