No screen capture when DVD Player is running?!

I have a DVD of my band playing a show that I want to take quick snaps from so I could post it on MySpace, but some genius at Apple decided you shouldn't be allowed to take screenshots with DVD Player is on.
Do they do this with any other program?
I could type out a copyrighted article or book in Word. Download a copyrighted movie as a .mov file off P2P. Take a screenshot and post it as a PDF or JPG.
Better yet, why don't they block YouTube.com so nobody can view stolen, copyrighted material.
It's my DVD, I made it. It is not copyrighted in any way. Yet for some reason they have taken the liberty to ensure I won't be able to take a snapshot of it, because there might be a chance someone would want to take a JPG of a copywrited movie.
I guess I could always download Handbrake and make it a .mov file, THEN take the screen shot. Or maybe Apple will read this and make it so I can't download that program.

Apple didn't decide to do this. To get the decrypting code for their DVD Player they had to sign a license with the DVD consortium. The movie industry sets the license terms and they don't want ANYTHING copied.
Do they do this with any other program?
No, but there are similar issues. For example, Preview will disable the "Save as PDF" print option for some PDF files (such as filled-in PDF forms), the same as Adobe's Acrobat reader does. They might have a PDF license from Adobe that requires this.

The DVD Player application has no way of telling that you are the copyright holder. They may just assume that the maker of a DVD would have all the source material and could get all the screen-shots needed from that.
There is VLC, but it is probably illegal in the USA. There are other screen-shot programs that don't have restrictions against DVDs. Look on VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • How do I take a Screen Capture using DVD Player?

I shot a video of MY own family using MY own video camera, then made a movie using MY own Mac and burned it to MY own DVD-R disk. However, when I try to capture a frame of MY own movie using MY own Mac's DVD Player, it will not let me because the MPAA dictates to Apple.
How can I get a screen capture from MY DVD, please?
    Thank you!

I'm using the Apple DVD v3.2, and am wondering if it's possible to catch screen captures (to use for my desk top)....from movies.

  • Screen shot in dvd player

Hi. I'm trying to use a screen shot (command/shift/3) to capture stills when I've got a dvd on freeze frame in DVD Player, but the jpg (I've got it set to save as a jpg on the desktop, and this works perfectly otherwise) just comes out as a grey and white checkerboard. Is it actually possible to do this somehow?
    Thanks for any advice proffered.

ajduguid took care of that already. VLC is free, and when you use it to play back your DVD, you can successfully take a screen shot of the movie whether you use the Mac OS X shortcuts, or the Snapshot command inside VLC itself.

  • Is it possible to go full screen with the DVD player?

I have a 21" IMac.  When trying to play a DVD, I cannot get the movie to go to full screen.  I can expand the screen to a larger size, but there are still a sizable margin left over.  Very annoying and distracting when trying to watch a movie.  I cannot find a full screen button anywhere on the device.  Any assistance you could give me with this problem would be greatly appreciated.
    Sincerely,

  • Frame Capture In DVD Player?

Is there any way to do frame captures in Apple's DVD Player app? I know you can bring in Preview to Grab the Window, but is there a quick way to do it within the DVD player?

No plug-ins or shareware Apps to do this? I would imagine that a lot of people use this feature. PowerDVD for the PC comes with it built-in.

  • Screen Capture from DVD?

This is probably the wrong place to post, but I need help in a hurry. Is there a way to do a video capture from a DVD movie that is paused? I need to get a photo and the only place I have it is in a DVD movie.
    Thanks,

.. if you're entitled to do screen captures from that DVD, simply use a different DVDplayer app:
    VLC http://www.videolan.org/
open the DVD with VLC, and the usual Apple tools as mentioned above are available ..

  • Exception when removing player component running on Ubuntu Linux

    Hi,
when I remove the player component from the GUI, I get the following exception on Ubuntu Linux 12.04 (Unity).
The project started 10 years ago and was running without any problems on windows, Mac, Linux.
I didn't test it on other linux distributions or desktop environments.
Catching the exception helps but this is somewhat ugly....
I'm using JMF 2.1.1e, Cross Platform Version.
    On win7/8 no problems.
    Any ideas?

I too am having this problem. On all of my linux distributions, including Ubuntu 8.04, 8.10, knoppix 5,1, fedora 8,9,10 flashplayer 10 is broken in the same way.  It reports that it cannot find webcam, and the settings dialog refuses to recognize mouse clicks.  I've poked around the web quite a bit and have not yet found a solution.  I saw the problem mentioned on an adobe bug reporting site and their response was to close the issue saying it wasn't repeatable on their system.  I tried to re-open it and my post was deleted without comment (I may have posted incorrectly or something)
Looking here  and elsewhere I see that the problem is very common and I don't see any posted bug-fixes, or even acknowledgement that a bug exists.  Has adobe lost interest in being cross-platform compatible?

  • IMac Shutting Down when DVD player is in use

So, I know a lot of folks have been mentioning the new iMacs heating up and shutting down. I'm managing my heat issues okay to this point, and I use Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign every day.
But - the thing keeps shutting down when I try to play a DVD!
Anyone? This one has me stumped.

    G5   Mac OS X (10.3.2)

Well, I've tried out all that I read from that link and nothing worked for me. I pretty sure that I did everything properly but I'm not sure. When I go into the "user/library/ applications support" folder, there isn't a folder that says script or bookmarks. So I created some within that folder and nothing happened for me. Is this the right procedure?
The only thing that I haven't done is restore my whole system, which I really don't want to do.
Am I doing something wrong and/or is there anything that you can think of that will help?

  • DVD Player "Go To" Feature

On a previous versions of Apple's DVD Player which was on my PowerBook (purchased around fall 2004?), there was a "go to" function which I used all the time, which I cannot find on the version of DVD Player (4.5.6) that came with the MacBook Pro I purchased a few months ago. I could hit SHIFT-APPLE-ZERO and enter the time code for a section of the dvd and jump directly there.
Is it there and I just can't find it? If not, is there any way for me to download the older version of DVD Player?
Another useful feature on the old one which doesn't seem to be available on this new version was to save a screen capture to file by hitting APPLE-SHIFT-3. Is that available on the currend DVD Player and I'm missing it?
    Thanks for any help,

Thanks, Grant. Unfortunately that doesn't work for me. When I hit SHIFT-COMMAND-3 or SHIFT-COMMAND-4 when DVD Player is running, I get this message; "Screen grabs are unavailable during DVD playback. Please quite DVD Player first." Which of course makes it impossible to get screen grabs from DVDs, which unfortunately is what I want to do. I suppose that's intentional on Apple's part.
So, does anyone know where I could download an older version of DVD Player?

  • Can I do "screen captures"

    Hi
I'm wondering if DVDPlayer does what I have come to know as screen captures - obtaining a still "photo" from a video format. I've checked around in the help info but I'm not seeing anything called screen capture, nor anyting that sounds like it to me.
    Thanks,

I'm 90% sure Apple has been required to build in copy right protection.Apple is too easily a target for the film industry to sue over this kind of thing - of course the beige box PC OEM is too small to bother with.
For your future reference in any application you can go to that Applications Menu (i.e. the 'Safari' menu in Safari) then choose 'Services' then 'Grab' then 'Screen' or 'Selection' (Selection is just part of the screen!). This service is available in the vast majority of Mac OS X Applications.
As Adam says above you can also type a key stroke. The Keystroke <apple>, <shift> and <3> allows you to take a whole-screen grab. The keystroke <apple>, <shift> and <4> allows you to select just the area of screen you actually want. (Just drag the box when the crosshairs appear). Using either option saves the screen capture as a file to the Desktop. (i.e. Picture1.jpg)
However, Screen Grabs do not appear possible when DVD Player is running.
Under OS 9 they used to come out as a blank greeny black file.
To grab a DVD you'll need to rip it first.
Unless you've got a third party screen grab programme that may get around the issue.

  • Use screen saver while running DVD player?

This may seem like a silly question, but I like to watch the Simpsons while falling asleep.  The issue being that by the time the DVD has run it's course, I have fallen asleep only to wake up maybe several hours later and the screen saver isn't on.  So as not to burn out the screen, the drive, or the hard drive, is there a way to stop the DVD player from overriding the power saving settings?  Better put, can I get my mac to go to into sleep mode after a set period of time while the DVD player is running?
    Thanks for your help.

Don't mention it. You were the one who said the question might seem silly, and you were right. Actually, the question itself wasn't silly:
...can I get my mac to go to into sleep mode after a set period of time while the DVD player is running?
That was a reasonable question, and I answered it straight. My somewhat facetious response to the underlying situation reflected my perception that you want to have your machine runniing and sleeping at the same time, which is an impossibility on its face.
