No search results in Mail

Hello,
Avere since I updated to 1.5 I can not search anything in my mail program. Even if i type a known word that should be in there nothing comes up in the search area.
Anyone have this problem and a solution?

Finally I can search again in Mail.app!!
Here's what I did (not sure which parts caused the fix):
1. Fix permissions on Mail folders. In Terminal.app type:
sudo chown -R <yourloginname> /Library/Mail
sudo chown -R <yourloginname> /Users/<yourloginname>/Library/Mail
2. Delete the contents of ~/Library/Caches and /Library/Caches (move to trash, empty trash)
3. Force re-index of Mail folder for Spotlight. In Terminal.app type:
mdimport /Users/<yourloginname>/Library/Mail
4. Restart Mac
I had previously done the following with no success (but some of this might have contributed to the fix):
1. Use Onyx to rebuild LaunchServices
2. Use Onyx to rebuild Mail's Envelope Index
3. Use Onyx to rebuild Spotlight Index
4. Quit Onyx, wait for Spotlight re-indexing to complete

  • Why are my search results for mail incomplete?

Why is it that when I search for emails that I KNOW are in my inbox I cannot find them? This never used to be a problem until I upgraded to Lion. My inbox has close to 7000 emails so it is not practical to manually search through it for an email that is several months old. Why are the search results incomplete? I find this extremely frustrating.

Had the same problem- called applecare, a mail supervisor walked me through the easy fix-
(I am no tech so this is in simple terms)
(Assuming you just upgraded to lion) - the "library" was not "properly rebuilt" - the emails are there but are not fully queriable which is why the "recent" or "post upgrade" emails search properly while the "older" or "pre upgrade" ones don't- the library index needs to be rebuilt (which is much easier than it sounds)
    Steps
    1- Quit Email (fully)
    2- open finder, open "Go"
Hold the "Option" key on your keyboard - this will expand the menu to show the "Library"
3- Select the "Library" option, (you can now release the "Option" key).
4- Open the following folders (Mail,   V2   , Maildata)
5- Within the Maildata folder there are (3) files which need to be deleted (Trashcan them)
         (envelopeindex, envelopeindex-shm,  envelopeindex-wal)
6- Reopen Mail / (This will automatically reimport these files,  takes some time depending on how many emails)
7- Quit mail and Reopen (has to reload for some reason)
8- The mail program will do some automatic sycronizing  (You will see some the files "Reappear / fill in" while Syncronizing
9- about 100 (blank or garage or remant emails) loaded to the top of my inbox during this process but everything else was normal-
    Everything now works great

  • Help with printing search results in Mail

I would like to print out the results of a search in Mac Mail. I'm only looking to print a 'list of emails' and not their individual contents.
    The print function is unavailable.
If anyone knows how to manage this?
    Thank you
    darryl

    Andreas,
You do not indicate what equipment you are using. I have an iMac/Magic Mouse combination and I just swipe the mouse with one finger to return to a previous page after opening a link in that window. This is what I have set in System Preferences...>Mouse.
When the search window is open, I usually open links in tabs. That way the previous search always remains open when I close unwanted tabs with the ⌘W shortcut. The little orange arrow never made any sense with my workflow.

  • Attachements not included in search within Apple Mail

    Hi
I have a problem with the search within Mail: my attachments seem not to be included within searches. When I search for terms within an attachment, I get no results. I tried with PDFs, DOCs, RTFs and ZIPped documents.
By the way: if there happens to be some expert out there: what kinds of attachments are searched within mail (e.g. a DOC in a ZIP archive)?
My system is quite new and setup still standard (at least the spotlight preferences).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Phil

    Hi,
It is caused by the deprecated features and components in Outlook 2013:
Outlook search via the Windows Shell
Outlook 2013 will no longer surface search results for mail and calendar items in Windows Explorer (or via the start menu).  Users can still utilize all of Outlook's search functionality from within the app itself.

  • Outlook 2013 entries not included in search results

I have Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 32 bit. When I use Windows 7 "Search programs and file" via the Start button, the Outlook entries are included in the search results. Or rather they were until I recently updated to Outlook 2013. Now the Outlook entries
    are missing.
I have checked that Outlook is included in the scope of the Search indexer. I have rebuilt the index from scratch. I have also explicitly added the Outlook PST file in the scope of the index. None of this helps.
The indexed entries are successfully retrieved from within Outlook itself.
    Any ideas out there?
    Thanks, Paul

  • IOS7 mail search results appear to be random by date also where are the search parameters, from to etc..? help!

Mail search returns results by random date. Where are the mail search parameters, from,to,etc?

This is really annoying. Mail search on iOS 7 never worked, either on iPhone
    4S or on iPad.
Search results are not sorted in any perceivable order. I get totally random results, with messages dating 4 years back jumping to yesterday and so on.
I have never seen Apple to respond to this issue with earnest feedback, and users are often dismissed.
I used to have to resort to my Macbook Pro to get decent results, but due to the many mail app problems on OSX, I do not rely on it anymore.
Can Apple please give feedback to this search issue on the IOS devices? It is really, REALLY crippling.

  • Hide Mail Search Results Drafts or for Trash?

when i run a search in mail it is totally cluttered up with what appear to be DRAFTS of outgoing emails that are in the TRASH.
is there a way to stop mail from creating these or to hide them from my search results?
it's like someone upturned my trash buckets onto my desk over here.
    THANKS

    thank you. great help.
can you just remind me how i control what i want to see on the left hand side again (and whether you have any tricks or insight into this)?
for instance, i have On My Mac mail which i moved to the hard drive and off of my IMAP based mail. presumably i can add an On My Mac icon on the top left?
also, i've always found searchlight uber annoying in the sense that i can ADD search criteria but i cannot tell it to /not/ include some kind of criteria. say for instance that i want to search all text documents for the word "capricious" but i /don't/ want to see results for pdf's that contain this word. or - well it would be nice to be able to include or exclude certain hard drives a little more integrated with the search criteria instead of having to run off to the Settings that are buried somewhere. i mean, maybe i really need to search an external drive and i want spotlight to index this drive for me overnight for this particular search - it would be great to be able to temporarily add this HD in a way that was easy but also made it easy to remove it when i found what i needed.
anyway, i digress because you provided a nice explanation here...
is there such a thing in MAIL search as adding a set of criteria or excluding a set of criteria? i mean, say i want to search for anything that went out TO "MyLandlordAttilaTheHun" but also anything that came in FROM him - but i didn't want to see anything in the trash?
anyway, thanks for anything on that and/or any future helpful observations...

  • Mail search results show 'to' field instead of 'from' field

Since a couple of days mail in Mountain Lion (10.8.2) shows the 'to' field instead of the 'from' field.
Previously when I performded a search action, the middle collumn showed the 'from' field. So when i perform a search on mails from [email protected] the mails from [email protected] show up in the search results, however it shows the 'to' field. If there are more people in the 'to' field, it shows the first. Does anybody know how to return to the old setting?
    Thanks,

I'm seeing the same thing. I didn't change any setting, but it just starting doing this and it's infuriating trying to find stuff.

  • In OS Yosemite the search function in Mail, Finder, Spotlight- does not work

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013)
    2,6 GHz Intel Core i7
    16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB
    OS Yosemite,
    Finder versión 10.10.1
    Mail Versión 8.1 (1993)
In OS Yosemite the search function in Mail, Finder, Spotlight… does not work. Messages or documents with the search criteria are there and one could find them manually, but the search function fails to find them. Following advice from Apple Support (728965377):
    1. I applied an Apple protocol for adware removal (Remove unwanted adware that displays pop-up ads and graphics on your Mac); I had none, because I had formally utilized a similar protocol that I had found in Internet, actually an app that implemented automatically Apple's adware removal protocol.
    2. I rebuild the post boxes in Mail (Mail (Yosemite): Reconstruir buzones); It took a while but it functioned properly
    3. I re-install the System (OS X Yosemite: Reinstalar OS X); It took about 4 hours but there was no problem whatsoever with the installation.
Afterwards I searched for messages in Mail, and documents in Finder and Spotlight, without any difficulty. The search function in all of them was working properly. But the next time that I needed to search messages or documents, an hour later or so, the problem reappear and a couple of new issues occurred:
    1. in app RagTime 6.5.2 (Build 1821), www.ragtime.de, the menu bar disappears (it is invisible), when one performs certain operations, e. g., calculating a value with a formula, whether it is in a spreadsheet or some other component (text, drawing, etc.). After touching with the cursor the menu bar is visible again.
    2. after reading an e-mail in Mail or copying an address, this is seeing as a floating object in the finder and over every application. There is no logical way to get rid of the floating object and neither copying or deleting or cutting it. It is not a big issue but nonetheless bothersome.
    3. In Mail, messages with Flag or in VIP contacts cannot be seen in the appropriate folders, only in the Incoming mail folder, together with other messages. It seems to me, this issue is part of same search function problem.
    4. The preview function within Mail does not show the attached documents to a message, whether it is in the IN, OUT or Draft boxes.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try again to re-index Spotlight. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name or email address, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • How to reveal/open mailbox containing selected message in search results?

A user is trying to find a message. She searches for the sender's email address and she sees the message in the search results and it is listed as being in a mailbox named "Prism". She browses through her list of mailboxes (local and on the server) and see no such mailbox. She opens Get Info and sees that mailbox is listed as containing 53 messages, yet selecting it and clicking on the Show Messages buttons generates an empty window and the error "No Mailbox Selected".
I had her rebuild her In mailbox on the chance that the missing folder was a child of the In box (I've seen her do that before). I have on more than one occasion watched someone delete mailboxes that are the child of the In box and when they deleted the second-to-last one the last mailbox also disappears. In those cases the disappearing mailbox has always been empty so it wasn't a big issue. I'm wondering if this is how the "Prism" mailbox disappeared.
I seem to recall that there is a keyboard shortcut that would open the parent mailbox of a selected email in a search results listing but I can't seem to find that shortcut. Anyone know if there is such a thing? And anyone have any other ideas how to find the missing mailbox?

    Michael,
if the search was done from within Mail, looking into "all folders" and you see the message, open that message in the Find results window and top right you will see a link to open the email in its original mailbox.
Now if you do that, the left column should show where the mailbox is.

  • E-Mail search misses e-mails

When using the search function in the mail app (IOS 8.1.3) within "all inboxes" using the name of the sender "Smith" the search delivers a long list of e-mails sorted by date from the newest to the oldest. It shows more results when "All Mailboxes" is active, of course less when "Current Mailbox" (I guess in this case "all inboxes") is active.
I am missing an E-mail in the search result. When I try the search in the correct folder "Archive" the search delivers that particular E-Mail.
Why is the search function when used from "all inboxes" with the radio button "All Mailboxes" not delivering that result. Does it only refer to E-Mails within all inboxes? If yes, how do I search all folders of all mailboxes? The general search from the home screen is much less helpful than the search within the mail app.
    Thank you!

I've been unable to search email "message" body ever since getting Verizon.  I can search fine by sender, subject, etc,  but when I try to search "message" I get a Verizon error message (not a browser error) stating: "We were unable to perform your request. Please try again."   I've called tech support, and they tried to say this is some sort of broswer issue. It ISN'T, because again this is a verizon message coming up, and the other searches work fine.  This has never worked in MONTHS, and I'm about ready to switch to another provider, since I need to be able to search my emails.  UGGGH......

  • How to make the search box in 'mail' bigger

    HI all
I use the mail programme in Lion and use a Mcabook pro, There is a search box in the upper right hand corner so you can search through your mails, I have accidently made it smaller and am looking to make the box bigger so I can see the full names of the results.
I have looked in toolbars and in 'view' and cant fin anything, I have tried to clip and drag, but that does not work either, anyone have any ideas how to make it bigger again,
    Thanks

Thank you Colin, I managed to delete some of the buttons thus the search bar became bigger, thanks for the inspiration

  • Is it possible to get Spotlight to list search results by closest name match not document type?

Example: when I type 'wireless info' into Spotlight on my computer the document 'wireless info' is the 29th search result listed.  The top hit is a mail message named 'Re: Re: Reset the device, and new wireless info'.  The other 27 items in the list above the document I was looking for are things like 'Introducing Portland.doc' and 'Les Amis B&B'.  So spotlight is not very good at locating something when you know exactly what it is you are looking for.

Thanks Barney.  Your advice was spot on.  But today I downloaded the new Yosemite OS and the behaviour is exactly reversed!  Spotlight can now be used for searching folders and shows my folder as the top hit, and finder does not show the folder at all in its search results of my Mac.  See below:

  • Podcast accepted by iTunes, but not showing on search results after days

I submitted a podcast to iTunes about a week ago and on the 20th I received an e-mail to say that it had been accepted onto iTunes.
Several days later, however, and it still won't show up on search results. When I search for the title of the podcast, 'At The End of The Day', it doesn't show up. However, when I search for the author, 'Leigh, Mark and Toby', it DOES show up! Obviously, I want people to be able to find the podcast through its title... can anybody please help me? Thank you!
    Podcast iTunes url: http://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/at-the-end-of-the-day/id393735348
    RSS feed: http://attheendoftheday.podomatic.com/rss2.xml

Turned up fine for me, though it's not at the top of the page; you have to scroll down to the Podcasts section and it's the first item there.
