No "Send to Motion" in FCPX

I'm using Final Cut ProX (ver 10.2.4) and Motion 5 (ver 5.1.2) and trying to "import" video files into Motion 5.  I do not have a "Send to Motion" option within FCPX.  And I can't seem to find a way to import video files directly into Motion 5.

1. There is no send to Motion in FCPX.
2. Depending on what you need (source clips, section of the edit, timeline range). You can use the Share options to export the clip to a format like ProRes422 or 4444, and then import those clips into Motion. When you are done in Motion, export back out  to a high quality codec and add the render into your Final Cut project.
See the "Share projects, clips, and ranges" section of the "Share  your project" chapter in the user manual.
3. In some cases, you may be able to achieve what you need by using Final Cut Effects/Titles/Generators and just add the effects onto your clip in FCP.

  • Send to motion option greyed out in FCP 7.0.3

Hi I have just bought Motion 5 in order to use the optical flow tool. When I select a clip in my timeline in FCP the option send to motion is greyed out. I only get the options send to soundtrack pro multitrack, soundtrack pro and shake.
    Can anyone help me please?

Ah, bad decision without doing the research first.
Forget Motion 5 for now until you make the leap to FCPX.
Learn Motion 4 and learn Optical Flow in the FCS3 package.

  • Send to Motion - audio and video not in sync

I'm using FC Studio 1 on a new iMac 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo with 2Gb memory. I've noticed that when I send to 'motion', my audio slips, losing the first second or so resulting in an un-synced clip.
Does anyone know why this is happening and what I could do to rectify it. At the moment I'm working on a project where i'm only dealing with the text etc on picture, so the sound sync is not a huge problem, but would be nice to know why it's doing it and what can be done.
    Thanks

    Um ... some useful data?
OS/CPU/RAM/GPU/vRAM ... version of PrPro ... and other programs or plugi-ins/3rd-party apps involved ... footage type/codec/wrapper ... such things would be very useful.

  • Sending from motion back to FCP

I highlight a sequnce or clip and SEND TO "Motion" and choose inbed content,
I make my effects and FILE<SAVE in motion and FCP reads a change. The video i sent was anamorfic DV 16/9. In motion I edited the fotage in 16/9 . when FCP reads the saved motion project it makes the clip squeeze to 4/3 in FCP. then i have to go into item properties and check the anamorfic box. Is there a setting that stops this switch of ASPECT RATIO's?
Does everybody have to do this when working in anamorfic DV?

I've heard this a number of times - You've just gotta set the anamorphic flag by hand. If you report it in FCP/Motion feedback, perhaps it'll get bumped up in priority...

  • Final Cut Express HD send to motion?

I'm confused here why Final Cut Express HD says I can send to Motion? When theres Motion doesn't sell separately? Did it use to sell separately before?
    Thank you!
    Luis

Yes. It was later bundled into Final Cut Studio.

  • Unable to open Motion inside FCPX

I just purchased an iMac and installed Final Cut pro X , Motion 5, Compressor as well as a third party plug-in (Red Giants Magic Bullet Looks) but I am unable to access Motion or Magic Bullet Looks through the host program (Final Cut). Am I suppose to be able to do this or not?
I am able to access Motion and Magic Bullet Looks as a stand alone programs only.
I'm very new to Mac and it's software. In fact this is the first time I'm submitting a discussion thread on line. Can someone please help.

Not necessary to say, that this was not problem in FCP7 and Motion 4 and is not FCXP and Motion 5.
There you just right clicked the clip in timeline and select "Send to Motion".
Currently you may not apply one or more of the phantastic Motion 5 features directly to your clip from the timeline.
    This is frustrating...

You don't open Motion inside of FCP X. It is a standalone application. You can use it to publish titles, transitions, effects, and generators TO FCP X, which are then available in FCP X's Browsers to apply to your projects. You can also use it to modify any of the existing effects. This article may help:

  • Best way to "send to motion"

    hi...
i have a question for which the answer may be obvious, but i'm not seeing it in either the motion or the fcp user manual. if i want to work between fcp and motion (specifically to use fcp for time remapping of clips, but motion for all filters and behaviours) what is the most efficient way of moving material from one program to another. if i use the "send to motion" option in fcp, will all further fcp time remapping changes then show up automatically in the motion project as i continue working?, or would i have to wait until i have a final version of the remapped clip before i send the clips to motion. i know that fcp recognizes changes and updates made in motion projects each time the project is saved, but i'm not sure if the reverse applies. thanks for your help.

    No I don't think so.

Yes but a better strategy would be to just use Final cut to edit with and use Motion for your effects and titling.

  • FCP Send to Motion - clips missing in Motion

I have a sequence I'm sending to Motion for tweaking and rendering. The FCP sequence has Templated transitions at chapter markers (templates I built in Motion) that work fine in the sequence. When I send the sequence I don't get the option to embed the Motion transitions unless I select all the clips in the sequence first - when I do that the Motion project only contains the first transition - none of the other clips in the FCP sequence appear. If I send the sequence from the project bin then all the clips arrive in Motion, except for the Motion templates.
A few other details. The FCP sequence is a chopped up screen recording session at 1024 x 768 in the Animation codec. All the clips have been conformed to 29.97 and play fine in FCP. I'm sending them to Motion as they are intended for 640 x 480 MPEG on DVDs. Some of the clips are time remapped in FCP and play fine but render terribly. Motion does a great job of scaling and time remapping the clips (unlike FCP) otherwise I'd just render from FCP.
    Anyone have a solution?

    Thanks Peter,
I can't find anything in User Prefs that would apply. After pushing the Send to Motion button in the "Export Selection to Motion Project" pane, if I leave "Embed 'Motion' Content" selected, it fires up Color. If I deselect the check box, and leave the clips as is on the timeline, it fires up Motion. It seems like an XML transfer bug. But I seem to be the only bonehead getting it. Which suggests user error.
    Thanks again,

  • How to I get FCP to "send to" motion 4 rather then motion 5?

    Hello,
I have FCP 7 and both motion 4 & 5. When I try to "send to motion" from FCP 7 it opens motion 5 and I'd much rather have it go to motion 4. Any suggestions would be greatly apreciated.

The legacy apps should all be in a folder to hide the new apps from the old apps.
If you have FCS on your system and then download one of the new apps, a Final Cut Studio folder will automatically be created and the apps moved to it.
Here are the steps (the second, single partition method), I've never understood the open Motion 4 first step, but I've had to do several installs and I do it – just to be obedient I guess.
    Good luck.

  • FCP clip send export Motion

I have a series of short clips that I want to place a title over. When I click export to editor from FCP - Motion can't open the clip file. So I tried send to motion and the filters are lost.
What gives? How do you all work this?

Create the title as a single file... then import it into FCP and let FCP marry it to the background. You can use the export as a temp file to place the title with... then delete that background, save the motion project, and import that projedt into FCP and just place it over the clips in the timeline.

  • Send to Motion & Stabilize

Sending to Motion interlaced footage from FCP6 and applying Stabilize behaviour, the last frame is not stabilized.
How to avoid this field error tracking?

When you send a clip from FCP to Motion the Play Range it's already marked and not extensible.
I would want to add that this happens when using tracker.
Deepening the issue i have found three ways to resolve it:
Select the behavior Stabilize applied and
    1) in the Keyframe Editor move the last keyframe of Track Result X or Y or both after the out point
    2) in the Keyframe Editor use the command After Last Keyframe/Generate Keyframes
    3) position the playhead on the last frame and analyze in reverse

  • Problem using the Send to motion item in FCP 5

Everytime I send a clip from my timeline in FCP to Motion 2 the clip's aspect ratio gets changed. I am using the Apple Intermediate Codec HDV 1080|60. My preset in Motion is to HDV 1080|60.
It appears that the clip is being stretched along the horizontal axis (it is wider when brought into Motion this way).
    Help!!
    Thanks in advance
    G5 Quad   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   2 GB RAM, Apple 30" Display

I am having the same kind of problem as I export fro fcp to motion and then back, it looses the anamorphic flag and I reset it, however, even after doing that my clip does not correct itself. I also tried exporting the clip to quicktime movie and importing it to fcp, but even then it does not maintain the aspect ratio of my project. Could there be an underlying bug under the hood, or is there a sequence of steps to properly do this?
    Thanks

  • How to Create a Custom Title in Motion for FCPx

I would like to make something like the "torn edge" title in Fcpx with the following animation; it would move up from the horizon at the bottom of the screen, display the appropriate text for its position in the movie timeline and then drop down and disappear, reversing the same motion as it did at the beginning.  No music or sound would be used when the motion happens, but that might be an interesting addition.
What steps would I do to make this happen.  I'm new to Motion and want to do some fast track learning.
Would I create the image that I want to animate in photoshop and import it? Or am I way off base?
    Thanks.

Why go through the trouble? Just use the Torn Edge title and add the animation to it. Start by right-clicking on the Title in the Title browser in FCPX and select Open a Copy in Motion.
All you need to do is add the animation keyframes to the "components" group (Position > Y). Everything in the title, including the text objects will "follow".
If you'd like, you could add Build In and Build Out Optional markers giving you the option which animations you want to include. To add "timing" markers, no layers can be selected (so click in the layers list on a space where nothing is listed.) Move the playhead to the frame where the animation ends for the animation in and type M, then type Command-Option-M and from the popup Edit Marker dialog, select Type: Build In Optional. Move the playhead to the frame the animation out starts and do the same except select Type: Build Out Optional.
When you're finished, Save As if you want to name it something other than Torn Edge copy. You will need to create or select an existing category (but you can ignore the Theme option.)
It should just take you a few minutes to make the modifications you desire.
If you would like to "reveal" the text objects instead of having then move up into position, Move the Title Text Here and Subtitle Text Here folders out of the components folder into a New Group (select both objects and drag them over the top group in the layers list and position the mouse over towards the checkbox column -- a new group will be automatically created containing the two text objects). Select the Group object and Command-Shift-M to add an image mask. Into the source well, drop the components folder and turn the components folder back on (adding something as a mask causes it to be turned off automatically.)
To really sell the effect, option drag the components group above the text group and turn off "Tan bg" and "PaperTorn". (The animations will be copied as well and will match the original group.) You need another copy of the Torn edge to pass over the text...
You could Save As this variation for yet another separate effect.

  • Motion in FCPX - click lag, hanging, tortuously slow rendering

    Hello Colleagues,
I have 2 iMacs of different generations, both up-to-spec and up-to-date on OS, FCP, and Motion.
I am experiencing very poor performance when using Motion "generator" graphics: lag, hanging, slow renders, and sometimes even crashing.
I have verified folder permissions, verified fonts, eliminated all converted events/libraries from pre-10.1 - pretty much everything except uninstalling, trashing prefs, and reinstalling fresh.
Still, FCP seems to be FIGHTING ITSELF, with iStat showing that more than half of CPU effort is being used by "system" instead of "user" at any given moment (when Motion assets are present and enabled).
The performance is far poorer than it ever was on FCP7 with Motion 4, and it is far worse than FCP10.0.x with Motion 5 (one of my machines was previously used with FCP7, however, the newer one has been FCPX since its unboxing day in early 2013).
Does anyone have any suggestions for the next step in troubleshooting this problem?
    Thanks,
    Eric - CoralVision

Yay it's Luis and Russ! Hello colleagues!
Luis: I tink I posted a link to one of the troublesome assets for you, but I limped through the completion of that project by keeping the inspector closed. I still suffered lots o click-lag, spinny balls, and, at the end, an overnight render, but I got through. This was on a 90minute show choir concert that had about 12x 8 second lower 3rds, and about 3 minutes of full screen titles, rolls, and credits. All of the FCP generator assets were made by me from scratch in Motion5. The current post relates to a similar problem, but on a different machine with different assets. The current complaint is from my slightly older iMac (lower power than the new one but still quite capable when using the former versions of this software), and the generators came from Motion projects which were originally created in Motion4. So unless there is something wrong with my practice in using FCPX generators, something in common across the 4 or 5 projects where I have experienced similar problems, I think that a corrupt template is an unlikely explanation.
Russ: I run my systems stock - that is to say that the only 3rd party plugins I have installed are the Canon EOS and XF plugins I use for ingesting media. I don't have any plugins related to MoGraph, editing, rendering, or memory management. These are custom generators that I am creating, chasing the "template" functionality I used to enjoy between Motion and FCP7. So yes, user generated custom generators - and I have had similar problems with several batches of varying complexity and varying origin.
For now I will just have to adapt, observe, and troubleshoot. I have a sneaky feeling that I am doing something wrong in the way I am setting up the motion projects for publication, but I will surely announce it loudly if I learn anything new.
    Thanks for checking in, fellows!
