NO Service capability after initial 12 month warranty

I have entered into a 24 month mobile contract with the local sole distributor of iPhones, Vodacom, which includes a 32Gb iPhone 3Gs. They offer the industry standard 1 year warranty but the shocker is that after this initial period they will not / cannot repair the iPhone but you are compelled to purchase a replacement. In fact if the battery dies after 12 months and 1 day I would have to simply throw the iPhone away!
How can Apple (or ita appointed agent/representative in South Africa) not provide after sales service? How can they enter into sole distribution agreements with companies that cannot offer any? What recourse would I have in the event of a product failure?
I look forward to your comments.

Dear Phil
I you cannot understand exactly what I am complaining about then all I can do is refer you back to my posts. I entered into the contract knowingly and willingly despite the conditions and the fact that I will probably not get it for another few weeks (no stock) because I believe the iPhone is the best in its product class.
However I still believe Apple did neither me nor itself any favours by entering into a distribution agreement with a company which has absolutely no interest or capability to support the service of the product beyond the initial manuf warranty - THIS is what I am hanging out there hoping to elicit some intelligent discussion and some other views from around the world. Not a tantrum as you put it. There certainly are problems with the iPhone - just check out some of the other threads, so I expect I will have some too. Is this unreasonable?
If this is a waste of your bandwidth then simply don't respond. The only reason I am responding to you is to thank you for your only truly helpful contribution so far. I will use the link you have provided and will post Apple's response when or if they do.
By the way I am in no way affiliated to Apple, or any competitor product - just a consumer trying to look out for his rights. Not unlike most of the users in these forums.
Kind regards
Piero

  • Location service only after initial Internet connection possible?

I have been to Budapest, Hungary last year. My iPod Touch 2G could not find my position although there were tons of WIFI networks around. I found an open hotspot in a café which was run by the town council. After connecting to it (and later without any Internet connection again) iPod found my possition at any place in the town. It was the same in another (German) town: I needed a short internet connection via a free hotspot to get the location service work.
Does the iPod download some sort of location data when I am far away from home?

Yes, you'll need to join a WiFi network before the location service will work properly. See this article for more interesting info about location service. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1975
    ...Notes:
iPod touch only uses Wi-Fi for Location Services (if a Wi-Fi network is available)...

  • This 3 month warranty is really starting to get me angry...

Dude, I swear they time the zen micro!!! after the 3 month warranty, it dies on you, and youre expected to pay forty bucks to get it fixed... thats really, really low of creative... I supported it by buying the zen micro on the first day, and this is what i get.... thanks
After i stoped using the stock earphones and switched to the sony MDR-7SR, it stops playing correctly, and sound is very, very unreliable. Is this a conspiracy that they want you to use their earphones only? Oh wait... those died too, which is why I bought new ones in the first place.
I complained, and got a RMA number, but my service warranty is out by one month, and they want to charge me.... In my opinion, these should be lifetime warranties. In any case, does anyone know how I may be able to appeal to them? I've heard of some people on this forum that are out of the warranty but still got a wai'ved fix.
Also one last thing... if you send in a player, do they send you a new one? Also, is it including all the stuff that comes with it, like earphones and battery etc... Since mine is out of the 90 day service, will they just fix the one I have now or just send a new one?
Moderators: Please, please help me!!! I've only had my ZM for 4 months, and the earphone thing is a very serious problem. Is there a way I can negotiate with Creative to get a wai'ved service fee, since this is such a wide spread problem... Maybe it's because the first batch of the ZMs produced all had this problem, because some of my friends that got it early also experienced this...
<Everyone, please give me some imput!!!
    im about to go crazy.
    Thanks

Of course the 3 month warranty is only an issue in the USA I think? Unless it extends to other countries in the Americas. In Europe it's between to 2 years, as it appears that we have better consumer protection law (petition your Senator!). Not sure about the rest of the world...
Also isn't the warranty now 3 months parts and labour, then a further 9 months parts only?

There's another thread with similar problems.

I wouldn't suggest it though, since it may void your warrantee. Apple will replace it if you bring it in. The genius bar guys aren't too bright, well most of them. But they'll go through the usual diagnosis steps then issue you a replacement if they have them in stock.
I have to admit, Apple has one of the best replacement services that I've ever experience. If you're familiar with costco, the return/exchange process is very quick and painless.

  • 4GLTE HomeFusion Service Disappears after 2 months and no support from Verizon

I am hoping this may gain some attention, or anyone else can share if this has happened to them
On July 5th, after 2 SOLID months of very good speeds and HomeFusion service with 3+ bars on the router, the service disappeared.
YES: The 4G Signal is GONE, only Verizon 3G. I am in the "4G Extended Area" (HomeFusion does not roll back to 3G)
Also notable, I have a Verizon 4G LTE Ipad and it too used to work on 4G and now only 3G
Now, I have been calling Verizon daily since July 5th, and get no answer, is this service GONE? Is it Broken, When will they fix it , will they fix it.
It has gone from "We will have our network people looking at the tower to, well, it's 4G extended service area and it could just go away, sorry"
Am I crazy, or is this a very poor way to service customers and run a business? If I had a service that they installed and approved on their network, shouldn't they maintain the service, or give notice that the service is going away?  They are still billing me in advance for next month, 7 days of which I have been ale to use 0 GB of bandwidth.
I call tech support, ask to esculate, they tell me it is esculated, there is no one else to talk to. There is no answer or hope of knowing if the service is coming back or if/when they will do anything and decide to do anything except take my money. Oh, I expect a hassle when I tell them I am not paying for something I don't have.
So question: What should I do next, any suggestions on escalation? Seems Verizon could care less about it's 4G LTE network and customers that they put up on a service, they just don't seem to care.
    Thanks!
    Dave W

once you set up a account for data service and just want one month service, how do you cancel after the month

    Hi Glenrose,
That would be between the you and the carrier that you have the contract with. In the past, I was able to purchase only one month of service from AT&T. Not sure what carrier you have or what contract you have, but you would have to cancel it with them.

  • Horrible Customer Service!  And a 33 month old BB problem continues to exist!

I have been a Verizon Wireless Customer for over 7 years.  I have been a Blackberry user for even longer.  In November of 2008, I switched my Blackberry World phone for the then new, Blackberry Storm.  I kept my same phone number, had no previous problems with the World phone or any calling issues, etc.  I just thought I might like the latest and greatest.  Almost immediately after getting the Storm, I started getting these strange 1 way audio problems.  When I say 1 way audio, I mean, I could here the other person on the end of the line, but they could no longer here me.  It was strange and it happened infrequently.  After about two weeks of having the storm, I decided that I really did hate not having the qwerty keyboard and so I took the storm back and got the BB Curve.  Again, noticed that I had the same 1 way audio problems and contacted VZW customer service.  After sending me out a new phone and several customer service calls, VZW opened a trouble tickets.  It was never resolved and conveniently closed, with Verizon saying they could not duplicate the problem.  I was not experiencing dropped calls.  I still had full bars, was still connected to the party on the other end of the line and it was happening in a bunch of different places.  I went thru this with the Storm, the Curve, the Tour and the Bold, all with this same sporadic one way audio, all with multiple different Blackberries being sent out to me, because Verizon was sure it was the Blackberry and not them!   Customer service suggested, on many occasions, that I switch my phone number.  WHY???  It didn't happen the first 3 years I had the phone number.  They also, had the audacity to suggest that I switch to a different platform.  HUH???  All of the sudden, I'm the only one in the neighborhood, who cannot have a blackberry phone, because it just no longer works for me????  Numerous tickets were open and no one would ever get back to me.  I couldn't get a VZW Tech to call me back if my life depended on it.  Call with one way audio were hounding me and VZW told me to mark my calls, where this happened.  Did all of that and they still couldn't find the problem.  The one way audio even happened when I was on one of the many calls to a Verizon Tech....yet they still could not "duplicate" my problem.  To this very day, they still have not found a solution.  After many months of dealing with Verizon (or not dealing with them, because they wouldn't call back) and researching new phones, I decided today, to try out an Android platform phone, just to stop the madness.  I called VZW and told them which phone I wanted (I needed something that would have a long battery life, had good reviews, etc) and they told me that I could NOT have the Motorola Android 3, but I would have to take a reconditioned Droid Pro instead.  I explained to them in no uncertain terms, that I was unwilling to pay for this change, as it's been an ongoing issue, that Verizon failed to ever fix or even acknowledge.  While I was getting stuck with a phone that I really don't want, I was completely tired of dealing with these issues, Verizon and my understandably irritated customers.  After the phone order was placed, the Verizon Customer Service guy, tells me that I have to return my Blackberry, within 10 business days or I would be charged for it.  WAIT!!!!  I don't even really want to change to an Android phone, I just want to try one out and see if this is going to give me the same issues as the BB.  Why do I have to return the Blackberry?  And why did Customer Service wait until we were almost finished with the conversation to unleash that little bit of information??  I would have never agreed to getting an Android, should I have known they were going to make me give up my BB too.  No, I don't want the Android phone just to have an Android.  I want Verizon to figure out what is wrong with my phone in the first place, but it's not going to happen!!!!  So, I was really left with no alternative, but to try another phone.  I have never gotten any compensation, in the almost 3 years this problem has been going on.  I have not asked for anything, except for Verizon to fix an issue that is clearly their problem.  We have another Verizon phone in our house and another line somewhere else and we have no problems with the other phones.  I have had at least 10 different blackberries in the last 33 months and all have had the same issue.  Quit blaming the phone VERIZON.  Don't ask your customers to give up their phone numbers and change platforms, all because of your incompetence.  I NEVER write reviews or go into any kind of forums, etc., but I've had it!!  Customer Service ignores the issues.  I didn't even know that any of the tickets were closed, until I called back with a ticket number, only to find out that the issue was unresolved and because of this, they had closed yet another ticket.  To me, the fact they are making me return my Blackberry, just to try out another phone, is beyond comprehension.  To top it all off, at the end of each of the conversations, the guy had the nerve to ask me if all of my needs were met, due to the issue.  Lol!  Yeah, they were all met!  Why ask that question to someone you know that is completely ticked off at you????

    Pepsio07 wrote:
I'm sorry, but when does swaping from a Blackberry Bold to an Droid Pro (certified pre-owned) qualify as an upgrade?
Secondly, I've had my phone number for over 7 years.  It worked just fine for over 3 of those years.  Why should I have to give up my phone number?  It's not only a personal number, but a business number as well.  I have more than worked with Verizon to figure out this problem.  Done way more than my share and for anyone to say that I'm unwilling to work with them is beyond belief.  I have marked every single call that has gone bad.  I have turned off my phone for a period, to see if it was the network.  I have switched Blackberry's numerious times.  Why does everyone just jump to changing a phone number?  Say I did this.  What are they going to do with that phone number?  It goes right back out there for someone else to have.  That's what Verizon told me.  If that's the case and the next person who picks it up has no problem, then it wasn't the phone, or me, or the number.
Oh, and Verizon has spent a lot of money trying to fix my problem??  Well, I've spent a ton of money myself, paying for a phone that doesn't work, time and energy switching from Blackberry to Blackberry, and not even mentioning the amount of time I've spent trying to figure out this problem, to no avail!
If something didn't work for 4 years I would be willing to try something else. Then again I don't run a business from a cell phone..

Please use this command to check it...

If you do get 3G, you only use cellular when wifi is not available. You pay by the month for a 3/4G plan.

When you get the service battery message the battery needs to be replaced - it  is like the service engine warning lamp on a car or the robot waving its arms and yelling "Danger Will Robinson."
If you have Apple's 3 year AppleCare you may be able to get the battery replaced under warranty - Apple says the battery should retain 80% of its charge after 1000 cycles and you didn't even get 1000 cycles out of it. Even if it isn't still under warranty you can at least ask for free replacement or a price break since it failed before reaching 1000 cycles. I know people who have been successful with such an appeal.
