No service on "new" iPhone 4s
I recently bought a used iPhone 4S from a seller on ebay, which is locked to the Three UK network. I am a Three PAYG customer so I assumed that my microsim would work fine in the 4S. However, I cannot get service on the iPhone. It says "No Service" in the top left corner.
It works fine over wi-fi and I'm a but puzzled as to why this is happening. With my Android phone, I just had to pop the sim in and manually enter the internet settings. I cannot find this option in the settings on the 4S.
I may be missing something major as I'm completely new to 3G iOS devices (my only other Apple product is a wifi iPad 3rd gen). Thanks for any help.
I would hope that the phone isn't stolen. The seller had over 700 feedback points on eBay with 100% positive feedback. I'll contact Three.
Edit: I checked the serial number on the Service & Repair section of the Apple website and it is covered by warranty until April 20 2013 (like the seller said). Wouldn't it be marked as blacklisted or similar if it was a stolen product?

No service on new iphone after restore from old phone
I bought a new 5 and tried to set it up using itunes that I've always used with my old 3GS. Has the latest OS, but it still isn't transferring the service to the new phone. It has all the apps, but it has no phone service, which is still on my old phone.

I have a brand new iphone 4s unlocked version from singapore and I am experiencing constant network fluctuations on my iphone , no service, call failed, invalid sim, sim failure, bars fluctuating from 5 - 3 - 2 - 1, no signal/bars searching etc... Ifeel miserable after trying out all the options changed multiple sims, tried multiple carriers, restored the phone back and have set-up as new device but the problem does not get solved... its is so frustrating that after investing on a world's most expensive phone you cannot enjoy the calling features which the phone offers which is the main thing you own the phone for.. Rest of the things are working.. The funniest part I am not able to make calls or receive calls but can access the internet.. I have tried every possible thing and really very frustrated with this iphone of mine...I hope the problem gets solved.. would anyone have any solutions to this problem.. Does it mean one should never update software as I hear that after updating to IOS.5.1 the problem has started coming and same has been with there.... Apple says its a hardware failure which is very difficult to digest as sometimes I get 5 bars and able to make and receive calls but 95% of the time I am unable to. If anyone has any solution I will be very happy if he or share can share the same. Many thanks. its so disgusting to experience this on top of this apple does not support global warranty for the phone as you need to go to the country from where you bought the phone for replacement.. Truly sad state of affairs.. very very very dissappointing.

Even if you could buy one, it would not work (even as an iPod) until activated with a cell phone provider. You would have to buy a used iPhone that had been activated. An officially unlocked one from one of the countries that sell them would also be OK, but any repair would have to be done in its original country. It would have to have been activated in some country, also. -

And just where did you get the screen repaired? Apple does not repair screens, they replace the entire phone. If you had it done by a 3rd party, then I'd say they most likely borked something up. Take it back to them. If the phone was actually replaced by Apple, then you have a 90 day warranty or the balance of the original warranty, whichever is longer. Take it in and have it looked at.
If it was repaired by a 3rd party, you are no longer eligible for a discounted out of warranty replacement from Apple. -
I have recently bought iPhone 5. I am using a BSNL post paid 3G sim. I can not activate my BSNL 3G services in my new iPhone 5. Though they were perfectly fine previously in my old handset i.e. Nokia Lumia 800. Please Help. How do I activate BSNL 3G services in my iPhone 5.
Since BSNL is not a supported carrier, you need to input Correct APN settings for Cellular data and enable 3G
Settings >> General >> Network >> Cellular Data Network.
Check with BSNL website/Wireless Customer care/Engineering. You can use Google as well. Cheers -
I have an iPhone 3GS that I dropped in water for a moment. After drying it and everything, it still does everything but get service. Can I back it up and transfer its data to a new iPhone 3GS? I heard something about how loading a backup from a water damaged phone could mess up the new one... is this true? I would truly appreciate the help, please let me know, thanks!
Sounds like your phone is in recovery mode. In this case, all data on it is gone. There's nothing to back up.

On my new iPhone 4s, I periodically get a "Sim failure" message and I loose my Verizon connection. To get service back, I need to shut down my phone and restart it.
Have you tried removing and replacing the SIM? If that doesn't work, try a new SIM from Verizon, they will usually swap them out for you for free. If those don't work, you might need to get the phone checked out, it may have a bad SIM port.

I have been loyal and stuck with Apple even though the program costs were prohibitive. Since the iPhone came out I have wanted to get one but the cost was too high. I now live in Costa Rica and my family of four has a very low income. I was very excited to learn that the new iPhone 3G comes out just in time for our annual trip to the states. The price is finally affordable! Here's my problem, I keep hearing that the next model must be unlocked at the store and requires you to sign up for a cell service. I can't do this.The only cell service in Costa Rica is with the ICE monopoly. CR signed a free trade agreement with the US last October which should allow outside cell service providers to offer service here. In the mean time I will be in California with the opportunity to buy an iPhone 3G. I have searched the internet to see if the new iPhone will even work in Costa Rica and I can't find any information. iPhones are sold at the Apple stores here for three times the price in the US. I just up graded to the newest MacBook Pro.
If Apple is actually requiring customers to sign up with a cell service there it is totally unreasonable. I have been a Mac User since the very first Macs with the green screens came out. If I added up the money I have scraped together over the years to spend at Apple it would be a small fortune. A required service plan would be an injustice to the very people who have made the company a success, loyal consumers! If I am required to sign up for cell service I will just have the buy a simmalar phone from another company.You have to sign up for AT&T service. The iphone would have to be hacked to work on another network. This would void the warranty, not allow you to update the iphone, may render it useless, and cannot be discussed on this forum - as per the terms of use of this forum.
Also, this is a users forum. we are iphone users not Apple.

New iPhone - when does service start?
Just picked up a couple new iPhones - one for me, one for my wife.
The guy at AT & T store said it would take a few hours before we were able to use the phones...well, it's been 5-1/2 hours now and no service. Is this normal???

Erie, PADid you port your number over from a different carrier? If so, when I got my iPhone the guy said it can take up to 3 hours for it to complete but mine took 1 1/2 days before everything was complete. Until then I had to use my iPhone to make calls and my old phone (Verizon) to receive calls/text messages.
It was only a matter of minutes before my iPhone was activated however (able to make calls from it).
If you're not in the same situation then I'm not sure what to say except wait it out, maybe the AT&T servers are chugging along slowly but surely tonight. -
