No shared computers appear in finder

hey i have a wireless router and modem. is this a "network" as such? if so then why isnt my other family members PCs appear in there. i have WPA2 security enabled would that be the problem?

I may have stumbled upon a solution by taking wild stabs in the dark and consulting a slew of Mac-related support websites. Would someone please tell me if what I've done could have unintended consequences in other areas?
1. On both computers: Click on System preferences > Network > Advanced > TCP/IP. Where it says Configure IPv6, I switched from "Automatically" to "Link-local only". Restart computers.
2. On both computers: Click on Finder > Preferences > Sidebar. Then I went down the list to the section called Devices and made sure there was a full checkmark in each checkbox (i.e. not just a hyphen or blank). EACH AND EVERY CHECKBOX. I wanted to be sure the Finder wasn't hiding any shared devices at all from me.
Surprisingly, I now have file sharing capability between computers! I'm not sure which of the two actions did the trick. I just hope it lasts...

Why do I have so many shared computers listed in finder since upgrading to Yosemite? The shared list grows. Why?

It is a bug. Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

  • There is a column of shared computers in the finder but I am not on a network to my knowledge.

Acolumn has just appeared on the left side of the finder window - under Favorites - labelled Shared.  I am not on a network as far as I am aware.  How do I get rid of these? I have followed advise to turn on the firewall but they are still there and change from time to time.

What type of broadband service do you have? If it is cable then more then likely the modem is just that, Just a Modem with no router.
If your computer is getting an IP in any other range then 192. or 172. or 10. then you are getting a Public IP address from the modem, which IMHO is Not Good.
If the above is the case then those other entries are other people doing basically the same as you, connecting there computers directly to the modem.
Contacting your ISP would help. you need to buy a New router to isolate you from the internet.
If you are on DSL then the modem is more then likely a router also. Modem/router combo and it is that unit that has been hacked in some way. Most all DSL modem have a built in router and most of the time a wireless side.

  • External 'shared' drive (WD MyBookWorld) - IP address has changed and I cannot access it, or delete the old definition and re-enter it. How do I delete or edit the definition of 'Shared' computers/drives?

I have for some time used a WD MyBookWorld external hard drive and 'connected' TimeMachine to it.  This process created two 'Shared' computers visible in Finder.  MyBookWorld and MyBookWorld-Backup.  Time Machine connected to the one called MyBookWorld-Backup.
However, then the MyBookWorld acquired a new IP address (long story, it wasn't static).  Time Machine stopped working - didn't give any useful prompts by the way, noticed by accident that it hadn't backed up for a month.
So, ideally I would just like the definition of MyBookWorld 'shared' computer/drive to be updated with the new IP address.  However, I can't find out how to do this.
    - I can't delete or modify the entries via Finder (or anywhere else) of the 'Shared' computers/drives.
    - I CAN connect to the WD MyBookWorld via Finder/Go/Connect to Server and see the file hierarchy that Windows machines are using in their backups .
    - Time Machine ONLY sees the existing MyBookWorld on MyBookWorld-Backup definition, but this fails to connect - error says that the devices doesn't exist or has an incorrect IP address.
So I'm stuck.  Any one help?  I can't help feeling that I'm missing something obvious.
    Thanks in advance.

Well, I'm not quite sure how the communities work in AppleLand.  I've had no reply from the community or from Apple.  I've not experienced this level of disinterest on any other support site.  Maybe my question was too boring....
As it happens, although I haven't resolved the problem as described, I've got Time Machine working again.  I don't exactly know how, but I updated the firmware on the MyBookWorld to the latest, and stopped using the AirPort wireless and switched to a wired connection.  Time Machine seemed to be able to find the external disk and recommence its backup regime.
If anyone cares to answer my original question that would be great.  Google shows many sites with posts asking similar questions, but without any sensible, correct, user oriented answers.

  • Firewall ports for shared computers (bonjour) to appear in Finder?

    This is the setup:
my Lion server is in a different subnet (DMZ) then the workstations (LAN) through the means of a third-party firewall
the Lion server has File Sharing enabled
the workstations can access the share points by connecting to the server (connections from LAN to DMZ are permitted)
    The problem:
the Lion server wont's show up in the workstation's finder (shared computers AKA bonjour)
    The question:
what ports need to be opened from DMZ to LAN in order for the Lion server to announce itself to the clients?

A work around that may work for you (does for me) is simply to keep the errant PC from sleeping during the period that you may want to connect to it. That's right. Torture is by depriving it of sleep. It's a PC; it deserves it, right?

  • Strange Computers Showing in Finder under "Shared"

Strange devices "ludwig" and "Walter-IBM" keep appearing in Finder. I use a password protected network. Cannot connect to the devices. Why are these showing up in my shared devices list? How do I ensure these computers are not connecting to my network?

How do I ensure these computers are not connecting to my network?
If these are not computers that are supposed to appear on your network, then it's possible that they have cracked your network somehow in order to use it for free. If you're using a WEP encrypted network, note that it can be cracked in under a minute at this point. You should switch to WPA, and make sure you use a decent password.
Of course, it's far more likely that these are devices of some kind that are supposed to be on your network. For example, if you have a hard drive connected to your wireless router, that will show up in your Shared list.

  • IMac is no longer finding my shared MBP or other shared computers.

I got a new iMac (Mountain Lion) for Christmas 2012 and when I turned on my old MBP and allowed sharing, the MBP showed up immediately in the connected servers (Finder sidebar). I turned off my computers a few days ago and now I cannot see either computer or the other shared computers in my household that also used to show.  I've checked the Wifi settings and they match as well as being on the same network and no changes have been made to our network (router).  Ive also tried rebooting both computers with no luck.  I'm stuck and can only print via printer sharing and need it for teaching.  Please help!  Thanks!

    Great news, thanks!

  • What is 9fee28000000 under shared hardware in my finder window, this has suddenly appeared.

What is 9fee28000000 under shared hardware in my finder window, this has suddenly appeared.

Yes it appears to be something on the network, however I haven't added any devices and don't own any PCs!  I've had the same network configuration for some time - this device has just appeared.
I was hoping someone else might have seen this device ID before as I certainly did not add it knowingly.

  • Time capsule appeared on Finder on both "shared" and "device". now i can't see it on devices

time capsule appeared on Finder on both "shared" and "device".now i can't see it on devices

It will only appear in devices if you mount the drive. This should happen automatically when Time Machine starts.. but you can manually mount the share by just clicking it.

  • Shared computers not appearing on Apple TV

    Hi
I had previously set up my Apple TV and itunes sharing with my iMac.
I have upgraded to 10.8.2 on the iMac and just upgraded the Apple TV to 5.2.
Under Settings on Apple TV, under Computers, the Apple TV tells me that libraries in home sharing will appear.  But no computers or libraries appear.
The only distinction I see is that my itunes account was created as a @mac.com and the TV states @me.com.
Do I need to change my @mac.com to @me.com?  Is there some other reason what my library does not appear?
The photos I've shared do appear as screen saver and home sharing is turned on in iTunes.
Not sure how to better word my question.

We recently downloaded 4 movies to the shared macbook pro and only 1 will show up in the apple tv's shared movies. There doesn't seem to be any reason why. They're all MP4s and all can be played within itunes without issue.
Right click and do a Get Info on one of these files - what is the resolution/bitrate?
I assume these are not from iTunes store - just because they play in iTunes does not guarantee AppleTV playback.

  • "Back to my Mac" computer does't appear in finder's "Shared"

    Hi,
I have my iMac at the office and a Macbook Air at home.
Sometimes, I can access the iMac from home via the "Shared" section in the finder on the left. Sometimes I can't. But I always can access it via SSH.
I conclude, the computer is not asleep as I can log in via terminal and execute  commands. I can also download files from my iMac.
Is there a way of updating the "Shared" list in the finder? Would it have to be updated on my iMac (for example via command line) or my Macbook?
I don't know if it's relevant or not, but it seems the "say" command doesn't seem to work on my iMac either when logging in from remotely (it just gets stuck and I have to abort with CTRL-C). But it does, when I execute it locally. Is there some "hybrid" form between asleep and awake?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!
    Christoph

It's possible that your work network is blocking some of the ports necessary for B2MM to work.
Have you ever tried accessing the Mac mini from a different network outside of your home? If this works, then it's probably specific to your firewall/network settings at work.

  • Find Shared Computers

Is there anyway to make a mac look for shared computers?
I am on a network with PCs and when I started the day there were about 7 showing. There was also a more icon at the bottom of the list and clicking it showed more computers in the main window. Now all the PC shared computers are gone. They are still on the network as the homepage of my 2Wire modem/router shows. Just want to get them back.
    Thanks

Apparently there is no way to do this, either it works or it does not.
Sometimes if I command K and connect with one computer the rest show up.

  • Network Shared Computers in Leo: why isn't it easy like Tiger?

In Tiger, I used to be able to just click on the Network icon in Finder and within seconds ALL the Windows computers on my network would appear as shared, and all I had to do was click on a computer icon and all its shares were visible. This was a simple and reliable behavior.
But since upgrading to Leopard, finding shares on my network could be a new game in a Las Vegas casino: in Finder's "Shared" section, they sometimes appear on their own, and sometimes not. Sometimes one computer appears, but another not. ANY of them can be summoned and respective shares opened using Finder's "Connect to server..." command, so all of them are there, active and part of the same workgroup. Why can't this be more simple and reliable like it was in Tiger?
Another annoyance is that once a server has been connected to via "Connect to server..." if I navigate away from it in Finder, and then return to it, it will need to go through a "connect" procedure again. This is not the case with a shared computer that is discovered automatically. Another reason to try to get the system to auto-find all the shared computers on the network.
Is there something I'm missing? I can't find a clear explanation for this in the discussions or in the help documentation. In fact I find it surprising that many seem to be ok with this; it was a lot more efficient the old way.
If someone can give me a clear, simple explanation of why this is the way it is, and how to get this to work reliably like it used to, I'd REALLY appreciate it!
    TIA

  • Network shared folders appear as 'sharepoint'

    Hello
I have 1 iMac and 2 windows 7 computers on my local small office network.
From the Mac I can see and access all shares on one PC, on the other, when I access via finder, the shared folders appear as 'sharepoint' and I cannot see any sub folders. I have checked settings on both PCs in the network centre and they seem identical.
Thanks if you can help. Regards

Hi, just an update...some of the problem is related to extensions. Some files have explicit extensions and others not. When I change the file extensions to an explicit extension (eg .pdf) then the file is fine.
However, there are no extensions on folders or folder aliases.
I've tried using chmod -x + file location/file name but that makes no difference to the alias, meaning that the Snow Leopard does not recognize the item as a short cut to another folder. Snow Leopard will only recognize the item as an alias if it's been created on a workstation running Snow Leopard OS. Very odd.

  • Where are my shared computers?

I am having a lot of trouble with Leopard when it comes to accessing other computers on my network. They do not appear in my "shared" list in the finder. Although I can access them by typing in their IP addresses. Previous OSX versions allowed you to simply browse your network to see all Macs running AppleTalk. How is this done in Leopard? Typing in the IPs is getting old. Help!

    Hi Rick,
If you are trying to access the mini using the powerbook over a network, the username and password the mini is asking for are ones that reside on the mini, not the powerbook. The easiest way to keep all this stuff straight is to setup two accounts on each computer with the same username and password for each. Then you only have to remember one. However, this is not the most secure practice although I really doubt if the average user would run into trouble doing this. Also look for a check box option at the logon window to remember your username and password when signing on in the future. This will make the login process almost automatic and you won't be presented with a dialog box anymore. Hope that helps!
