No signal from line in in Garageband, though okay in OSX!

My line in jack is clearly working in OSX - in System Preferences/Sound, the "Line In" input meter reads my guitar as I play it, with a good signal strength. In Garageband however, no matter what I've chosen in Sys Prefs, all "Real Instruments" activate the built-in microphone ONLY. I have used Garageband many times on a powerbook (G4) successfully, plugging a guitar directly into the line in jack. Yes, the gain is a little bit low, but is fine, and I've recorded plenty of guitar based music (indeed Apple suggests such a direct connection in their literature).
The problem just seems that Garageband is not switching over to line in when I switch it with the operating system. I cannot get the internal mic off. Help! Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Kip

I wish the software's help file mentioned this as clearly as you! They seem to suggest doing it only with Sys Prefs (see below). Thanks.
"You can connect an electric musical instrument or microphone to your computer and record it in a Real Instrument track. There are several ways to connect instruments and microphones to your computer.
To connect an electric musical instrument or a microphone to your computer:
If your computer has an audio input port, you can connect a microphone or an electric instrument to it. When using the audio input port, be sure to set sound input to "Line in" in your computer's Sound preferences. Open System Preferences, click Sound, click the Input button in the Sound pane, select "Line In" in the sound input list, then drag the Input volume slider to set the input level.
You can connect an audio interface to your computer, then connect instruments and microphones to the audio interface for recording. Audio interfaces are available in a variety of compatible formats, including USB, FireWire, PCI, and PC card formats. When using an audio interface, be sure to choose the interface from Audio/MIDI pane of GarageBandPreferences.
You can also connect an audio mixer or console to your computer, and record microphones or instruments through the mixer.
If you use an audio interface to connect musical instruments, check the manufacturer’s specifications to make sure the interface is compatible with Mac OS X 10.2.6 or later. Also make sure the audio interface uses a format supported by your computer. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions, which may include installing the correct driver on your computer."

  • Live5.1: Is surround or 4 speakers from line-in VCR poss., surround ev

I have finally got two pairs of powered speakers to plug into my Li've5. X-Gamer boxed card I got a few years back. When I play mp3s or CDs music from the pc CD player both the line out and rear outs play, both the same stereo i guess, when I turn both pairs on. I don't know whethere or not it has mattered what Sounds, settings in Windows XP I have as speakers type set to in Control Panel. I have NO creative software installed. Just what windows update gave me when it recognized my card. I am using WMP9. My CD player is a Pioneer DVD-6 non-tray (so it has no digital output), but I do have the CD audio line connected to the Li've 5. card, as well as the pci slot. I have never tried a surround DVD movie so I don't know if 4 speakers is giving me surround or not. I have a cheesy DVD or two, and I am getting sound from 4 speakers, but I'm not sure if it is in "simulated surround" or dolby surround (or a simulated 4 speaker version of dolby surround).
There is a line-in on the back of the sound card, and I have JUST plugged in a hi-fi VCR. With both pairs of speakers on, I get no rear sound channel. Therefore, definetly no 5.:
    Questions
: Is it possible to get rear channels as well from line in (dual stereo) as above from line-in?
2: Is it possible to get a surround-loaded stereo signal from line-in (VCR) decoded into both the line outs and rear outs, as either Dolby SURROUND , or simulated SURROUND?
3: Is it possible to create Surround effect out of mp3s or pc CD music in 4 speakers?
4: Do I need to install the creative software?

  • Why am I not getting any input signal into logic X or GarageBand from my audio interface?

    Hello all,
I'm completely new to all this so I will try my best here to give all the details needed.
So, I am using a Mac mini (2013 model: i7 overclocked at 2.6, 16 gbram) and a focusrite saffire pro 24DSP. Overall both are in perfect working order.
My problem, however, is that I am seemingly unable to get any form of signal from my saffire into either Logic X or GarageBand. I am trying to record guitar lined in and I have set all the settings in logic to what I think is right (software monitoring checked, output channels selected, saffire selected for both input and output) and I have set up my saffire mix control - I spent days reading the manual and watching online tutorials.
The saffire mix control is set up thus:
    Input 1 - instrument
    Daw 1+2 = GarageBand
    Daw 3+4 = Logic X
    Sample rate 41Khz
Master Output = stereo monitor mix (line outs 1 &2 to my monitor speakers)
    Output 3+4 headphones
    Is there anything missing here?
As far as this all goes, when I plug in my guitar I can get a very clear "raw" signal from the saffire mix control, but when I then go to set up a track in either DAW and assign the necessary line ins and outs, no matter what I do I cannot get an input signal, not even a partial one (I have the monitoring and record armed options checked btw). I am close to giving tearing my hair out.
I'm sure I am just missing something out?
    Thanks in advance :-)

I've plugged into the interface a mic and an electric guitar.
I'm not sure what I did but the guitar is coming through (though it shows no signal on the interface). Mic input level on line, mic registers a tiny bit of sound when I hit the mic (on only one channel) but doesn't register any vocals when mic input is turned up to the max.
Odd thing: stereo/mono button reversed that is when the button is pushed in it equals stereo on the head phones when it says it should be mono and when the button is left unpushed it equals mono when it says it should be stereo.
Monitor is on and volume is at max.
GB system preferences don't list Input 1 or/and 2. Where do I find them?
I've tried everything I can think of. It feels as if I just need to find the right switch but I don't know where to look...

  • No signal from audigy 2zs line out j

Hey there....due to a virus, I recently had to format my dri've and reinstall XP and all my apps including software for my Audigy 2 ZS soundcard. Before the format I had my sound and video card connect to my TV to extend my PC display and audio to my home entertainment system. The external speakers were connected through the line out # jack on the rear of the sound card and I could hear everything playing just fine when my TV was on and the correct video signal line input was selected (video #2 in my case), but now I can't hear anything (video is playing back fine on the TV, just with no sound). I've checked my audio settings and I think they're correct - if there is a mute switch for any of the line out jacks in the creative audigy software or in windows' volume control panel I sure can't find it.
I'm sure its a settings thing because I didn't touch the cable connections, and I double checked to ensure they are all connected tightly/correctly as they were before the reinstall.
If anybody has any pointers, man that would be helpful....thanks!

Yup, my digital speakers are connected through the digital out jack.
Device manager shows the device working correctly - no issues or exclamation marks.
Not one ioda of hardware was moved, not one cable unplugged or any other config changed before or after the re-formatting of the hard dri've. Software o/s and applications only.
The soundblaster card properties in device manager shows no conflicts....everything is working fine, but there is a setting somewhere that is being missed I suspect; I have gone ever every option in all of the soundblaster audigy audio control software installed that came bundled with the card, checked online for latest drivers which I've got installed, and did a clean uninstall/reinstall using creative's 6 step-by-step guide. I also checked all windows xp based audio controls even though I've checked the option that enables the audigy controls to sync with the windows ones as you probably already know.
To my knowledge, there is no way to disable line out signal from this card - its there, you plug in your external and go. And with no config changes at all, no hardware changes, no cables unplugged etc. I don't know what else to do. (except email creative support which I did a few minutes ago).
    Thanks Katman.

  • How do I get signal from my Roland Fantom G8 to Logic Studio or GarageBand?

My computer recently crashed, and since then I have not been able to record any music into either Logic Studio or GarageBand.  I need to get back up and running ASAP, as I'm in the middle of recording music for 5 different projects.  Here's all the gear that I have:
    -1 Roland Fantom G8
-1 iMac with Logic Studio and GarageBand
    -1 M-Audio Fast Track Ultra
    -2 Rokit KRK Monitors
    -1 USB cable
    -1 midi cable
    -2 1/4-inch cables
    -2 1/4-in to XLR cables
The 2 1/4-inch cables run from Balanced Outputs 1 and 2 on the back on the Fantom G8 into Inputs 1 and 2 on the back of the Fast Track Ultra.  The 2 1/4-inch to XLR cables run from the back of the 2 KRK monitors into Outputs 1 and 2 on the back of the Fast Track Ultra.  The Fast Track Ultra is powered via USB cable that runs into a USB port on the back of my iMac.  The midi cable runs from the "Computer" port on the back of the Fantom G8 into a USB port on the back of my iMac.  This is the exact set-up I had before my computer crashed, and I was able to record just fine.  When I open up the audio preferences on either Logic Studio or GarageBand now, it recognizes the Fast Track Ultra; however, it does not recognize the Fantom G8.  What I'm trying to do is get signal from my Fantom G8 into both Logic Studio and GarageBand.  I also want that sound to then project through my KRK monitors.  I also want to be able to record audio and midi.  Please help me!!!

I used the Fantom for several years and did exactly what you want to do. I simply plugged my Fantom into a channel on my mixer, in your case the 003. I ran a firewire out of my mixer (Presonus Studio Live) into my computer using Logic Pro X. Then I just assigned that incoming channel to a channel strip in Logic. As an example I used stero channel 9/10 on my mixer, (plugged in the Fantom here). Then the signal went via my mixer firewire to computer running Logic. I assigned my channel strip input to channel 9/10.
    Does this make sense?
I just sold my Fantom last week and purchased a new Yamaha Motif XF8. Now I am trying to figure out the same thing on it.

  • Wireless signal from iMac to TV?

I have a new 20" iMac G5 isight on the way and have a question. Has anyone tried to hook up the iMac (or other mac) wireless to your TV. There is products like this www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000068TYR
ref=erra_acc_dp1/026-6032989-4654855 that will send a signal from your antenna to your TV wirelessly. I thought mabye in combination with a TV tuner like EZ there would be a way to get the signal from the mac to the TV. That way I dont have to drill a cabel-hole in my livingroom floor down to my office to enjoy FrontRow on my TV. Or is there any other solutions/suggestions?
(And i dont think there will be an Airport Express A/V launched next week... though I wish!)

You should be able to connect your ATV directly to your iMac using Internet sharing, but you can't use the same NIC that the iMac is using for its connection. If your iMac is connected to your router by wi-fi, you can share the Ethernet port with the ATV. If your iMac is connected to your router by Ethernet cable, you can share your iMac's AirPort with the ATV.

  • Powerbook G4 Can't "See" Wireless Signal from Ubee Modem/Router

I was given a G4 Powerbook while out of town and it found the wireless signal in an apartment complex and a major airport just fine. But upon returning home it can't "see" the signal from my (Time Warner, Road Runner Extreme) Ubee modem/router. My Mac Mini's Airport sees the Ubee wireless signal fine, but the older Powerbook G4 can't. (The Airport signal in the menu bar has "bars" but they are grayed out.
Can an older G4 connect with the newer Ubee modem/router? Are there security settings that will allow this?
    Tx,
    WK

CRMDVM -- Thanks for the helpful info -- you are probably right on both counts:
The apartments where I picked up a signal is in an "old folks" apt. complex, meaning the router I was picking up was probably old -- compatible with the G4 lineage. And the Atlanta airport probably has a wireless system to allow the vast number of old and new computers that people carry to connect.
My Mac Mini connects via WPA2 Personal security code, and I set the G4 to the same security (in the Network preference pane) but still nothing. The Airport wireless icon in the menu bar is still grayed out -- it isn't the "blank" icon as when Airport is turned off. It has the wireless wave lines in the icon, but just grayed out.
Maybe the G4 is just too old to "see" the newer wireless signal from the new modem/router.
Thanks again for your help -- you definitely provided more than I knew. (btw, I'm just above you in Union County in Stallings).

  • Can I use Airport Express to extend signal from my Airport Extreme and then run Ethernet from Express to my TV which requires ethernet to access internet?

As stated in title. I want to access Netflix but my TV requires ethernet connection. I would like to use Express to repeat Exreme sigal and then to TV via Ethernet. I only have one access point in house for cable modem so I'm using Extreme to broadcast though house. Will need to be able to input network key for Extreme secure network. Thank you.
    Mike

Are both your AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express 802.11"n" devices?
If yes, you can configure the Express to "extend a wireless network" and it will  provide more wireless coverage and the Etherent port will be enabled so that you can connect an Ethernet device.
This assumes that the Express is located where it can receive a strong signal from the AirPort Extreme.

  • Problem while using trigger from line of 6534

I have faced some problems while using triggering with 6534. They are listed below. Please provide solution me.
    1. ) i was using pattern input with triggering(buffered) in which i am using the example given in library buffered pattern input-triggered.vi
Now i am using port 0 to take input. From line 0 of port 2 i want to generate a pulse which can trigger the operation & start acquisition. For that i am using write to single line.vi . My DPULL is open so bydefault the line will be at low level & by vi i will make it high which will trigger the operation.
In normal condition if we use write to a single line.vi it will write the given status on that line within a fraction of second and abort execution. But when i am usin
g it for trigger in following manner, it did not work.
First i started the VI buffered pattern input-triggered.vi.I have configured the start trigger with leading edge trigger. I have set the time limit properly.Synchronous operation is set at the front panel of vi.
Now if start the write to a single line.vi to give start trigger, nether it triggered the operation, nor it abort execution of single line write vi.When time out occured in triggered vi, then both vis stopped simultaneously. Why this happened?
2.) Similar problem i faced when i wanted to perform the change detection.vi Port 0 is configured for input.Line 1 to 7 are fixed with some status by connecting them to Vcc or GND. I have connected port 0 line 0 with port 2 line 0. So when i change status of line 0 of port 2 change detection should be occured o port 0. i am changing the status of line 0 of port 2 by write to a single line.vi But here i faced same problem as first that it was not writing to port 0 line 0. And bo
th process stopped when time limit occured in change detection vi.
So what can be the problem? Please help me.

    Hi Vishal,
    1) You should check to see that when you are writting a static 1 to line 0 you see a pulse high. You should also make sure that you wire this line to the STARTTRIG for group 0.
    2) If you solve question 1 you will also have question 2 solved.
It might be helpful to create a program that configures both programs (pattern I/O on port 0 and static I/O on port 2) in the same program and then starts both groups. I would do a little testing to see exactly what signals you do or do not see.

  • Generating signal from the 5412 which is in sync with the external signal

    Hi,
I am using the 5412 AWG. An external signal comes from the test unit. I need to generate a signal to the test unit which should be in synchronous with external signal which comes from the test unit. Can anyone help in this?
    Regards,
    Rajashekar

    Hi Rajashekar,
You could synchronize these two signals by sharing a start trigger and using the input signal from your test unit as the sample clock for the 5412.  There are some considerations when doing this that can be seen in the External Sample Clock Considerations section of the 5412 help linked below:
    External Sample Clock Sources
If you are using LabVIEW, you can find examples in the Example Finder located at Help >> Find Examples.  The FGEN examples are located at Hardware Input and Output >> Modular Instruments >> NI-FGEN >> Arbitrary Waveform Generation.  You can choose which line to use as the sample clock.  You will also need to add in some triggering.  You can find an example of triggering at  Hardware Input and Output >> Modular Instruments >> NI-FGEN >> Synchronization >>FGEN DAQmx Synchronization.vi.  This is synchronizing to a DAQ card, but you can synchronize to your external signal just the same way, i.e., sharing a start trigger and a reference clock.

  • GB won't accept transposed MIDI signal from digital piano

For some reason I can’t get GB to accept transposed MIDI signals from my Previa PX-120 digital piano. The connections are correct, from the piano to my MacBook through an Edirol UA-25 interface, and the signal is getting through fine. If I want to record with the piano in default C, there’s no problem. But if I transpose at the piano, GB continues to play it through the monitor in C (the master track is set up to the correct transposed key). The signal coming from the piano is fine, as I’ve tested from the interface to speakers, and the same thing happens when I feed the signal through a Kurtzweil MicroPiano and do the transposition there - GB goes on reproducing it as default C.
The odd thing is that I had no problem with the same set-up with a Yamaha piano. This is probably irrelevant, but it’s strange.
Any help very gratefully received as this is screwing up recordings with piano, voice and guitar, when the piano player needs to transpose in some keys.

I’ve been asking myself the same question. The Privia manual is silent on the point and I can’t get a reply from their Support, though will try again. Unfortunately I’m no MIDI or sound technician, so know nothing about how transposed MIDI signals should work, but, having run tests again, the piano certainly seems to be sending an untransposed signal via MIDI. At least, when I connect the piano via MIDI to the MicroPiano the signal sent does not transpose (I was wrong in my first post about this), though I can then transpose it with the MicroPiano. This would be fine if all I wanted to do was then send it direct to speakers. But if I send the signal on to the Mac from the MicroPiano via MIDI, it doesn’t transpose either, and I’m back where I started.
In other words, neither the Privia nor the MicroPiano is outputting transposed MIDI signal, only default C signal, and this is the problem rather than GB. Does this make sense?
I’d be very interested to learn what you come up with re your Yamaha. I’ll get a colleague to try the same thing. And will also try Privia support again. But, meanwhile, if anyone else has any experience or knowledge, I’d really appreciate hearing.

  • TTL signals from motor outputs

I'm currently using a stepper motor with a MID-7604 drive and a PCI-7344 controller. I would like to output TTL signals from the drive at certain motor positions, but do not have an encoder (which is required for breakpoint signals). Is it possible to `construct' a TTL type signal using the low-level motion functions in LabView, and then output them through a motor axis that is not currently being used?

    Hello,
Depending on the type of output that you want to generate (single pulse or pulse train) you could use the Digital IO port of the motion controller with the Set IO Port MOMO.flx function to toggle DIO lines or you could use the Configure PWM Output.flx function to generate a pulse train.  The downside is that this will be software timed based on the current position as determined by the controller.
There is not any way to manually modify the motion control signals that are generated by the controller.  That is all handled by the FPGA of the controller.

  • How do create an analog signal from a text or binary file?

I'm trying to output an analog signal from a file on an NI-DAQ 6251 card using labview 8.5. I've found the examples on building a waveform, but I'm stuck at how to read a text file and make a 1-D array to input my amplitudes into the buildwaveform.vi and I can't find any information on how to do so. Any help or direction is greatly appreciated.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

If all that you want in the file is the Y values, then a text file with a value on each line could be read. The Read From Spreadsheet File can be used. It will return a 2D that you can then use the index array function to get a column or if you select Transpose, the returned 1D array would be used.
If you want to create an example, use a 1D array constant in a VI and pass it to the Write to Spreadsheet File.
