No Signal on Mac Pro with Radeon X1900 and ViewSonic VA1912wb monitor

I have a Mac Pro (purchased in Summer 2007) with an ATI Radeon X1900 (512mb) graphics card. I am connecting the card to a ViewSonic VA1912wb (LCD) monitor.
When I first bought the system, it worked perfectly fine with the monitor. While it did not detect any display at certain times (when trying to install Windows XP for Boot Camp, and sometimes when starting up Boot Camp), I understand this had something to do with the video mode, and when I connected an old CRT monitor, everything worked fine.
Now, when I turn on my Mac Pro, the display sometimes does not show up at all. I often have to start and restart my Mac 5 or 10 times before the ViewSonic monitor will detect a signal and display. Sometimes even more (I was unable to get a display at all last night, after restarting over 20 times).
Does anyone know why this could be? It's very frustrating to have a nice computer and a nice monitor, but not be sure if I'll be able to start it up at all.

First you got to isolate the problem... is it the monitor, the graphic card, or the cable.
The easiest way to find it out, is to connect another display. Does it work, you know the monitor is to blame... if not, it's the graphic card or the cable.
Try another cable... if it still don't work, it's the graphic card.
I have the same graphic card and while surfing around the net, I figured out that these specific model has to be treated very carefully because it is overheating very fast. So it's strictly recommended to clean it every once in a while from dust... using compressed air.
Search around the net and you can find workarounds and pictures. Like this for example: http://www.macosg.com/group/viewtopic.php?t=13207

  • PowerMac G5 (not Mac Pro) with Radeon X1900 Xt locks after Leopard install

have a PowerMac G5 (not a MacPro) with an ATI Radeon X1900 XT (w/256 RAM). After installing Leopard, my system crashes regularly, especially after the screen saver kicks in. I also see blue horizontal lines on any display connected to the card. The original Gforce 6600LE remains stable.
I see all this jabber about the upgrade for the XT card if you are using a MacPro. My card is not THAT card. It was specifically recommended by ATI as being G5 compatible.
So now I think I may back off of Leopard and go back to 10.4.whatever unless someone can tell me how to get past this unacceptable performance. Apple support has been no help at all.
    Anybody...???
    Vfalzone

Saw two updates pass by in the last two days: 10.5.2 and another 'Graphic Upgrade'. I mistakenly thought the problems would be corrected. No dice. Still get horizontal lines on any monitor connected to the X1900 Xt card.
Not too many cards I can get for this box that have dual DVI ports. SO much for my $250+ CARD and Leopard!
    This really *****.

  • Mac Pro with software raid and upgrading to Snow Leopard

Not sure if anyone else has experienced this but here goes. I have a mac pro with 4 500G drives using the onboard software raid. When I insert the Snow Leopard disk and try to install, it fails to find the raid. Is there a trick to get this to work?

Thank you SSSOOO much Greg818. I was pulling my hair out over this problem. I even went so far as to do a full Leopard install with Snow Leopard update on a USB drive and them cloned it over to my RAID 0 array using SuperDuper hoping that this would solve the problem. It seemed to in the sense that the clone went fine but then when I would try and boot from the array I would get the Apple Logo and spinning wheel but it just kept spinning and spinning until finally the Apple logo was replaced by the Do Not Enter symbol(you know the circle with the slash through it).
So came here and found this thread. Your solution worked like charm!!! Once again thank you so much... you saved me from being bald.

  • I have a Mac Pro with Snow Leopard and FCP7 installed I would like to run FCP7 and FCPX on the same computer, is this OK

I have a Mac Pro (early 2009) with Mac OS X version 10.6.8, I use this for video editing with FCP7. I would also like to install FCPX, my operating system is Snow Leopard. Is this OK or do I need to up-grade my operating system. I want to be able to use FCP7 and FCPX on the same Computer. Your advise will be appreciated.

You will see from the hardware spec that the latest version of FCP X requires Mavericks.
The Mavericks spec shows you can upgrade to Mavericks on your Mac Pro.
Ensure you have a bucket full of RAM installed.

  • Installing Windows 7 one Mac Pro with SL RAID0, and 1 extra drive 4 windows

So i have snow leopard installed on a RAID 0. I also have a single remaining hdd that has my old Leopard on it. I want to install windows 7 on that remaining internal hdd but bootcamp won't allow me to run setup because it says it doesn't support RAIDs, even though i'm not trying to install windows on the RAID.
Can someone please help me out here? Someone on another forum suggested an AHCI, but i have no experience with them. Be Detailed if you could...

First, try doing what I first suggested, pull your RAID.
Boot Camp Assistant is more trouble than it is worth, and it isn't needed for what you want to do. Format the drive with Disk Utility to MBR/FAT, or just let Windows DVD do it all.

  • Mac Pro with X1900 - can I connect both 20" LCD and Sony Monitor?

I'm about to purchase a Mac Pro with the x1900 for editing video with Final Cut Pro Studio. I'll use a 20" monitor for main viewing, but would like to use a Sony PVM-14L2 as a playback monitor via Component video. Can I use one of the DVI outs of the x1900 to go to the Sony? I found this type of converter online: http://www.svideo.com/hdtvaiwr8500.html
Is anyone using a set-up like this? I figure it must be pretty common for folks who edit video on a Mac Pro to output to a playback monitor via Component video. Will the x1900 let me do that with the right cable?
    Thanks,
    joel

Hmm. I have that computer, card and dongle - I'll try it out tonight (PST) and let you know.
My gut feeling is that it won't work, or won't work as you would hope.
My powerbook had SVideo out on it, but even when connected to a TV, it would not work as a video out in the same way a fire wire preview through a camcorder did - it was a second monitor on a TV, and was not the same at all as a video out feed (it looked rather horrible in fact).
So, even if this does produce a component out signal, suitable for HDTV, I doubt it will work as a playback monitor.
But I'll post back in about 8 hours time (if someone does not beat me to it.)

  • How do I get Mac Pro with Lion Server to restart at a set time when users are connected?

I have recently configured a Mac Pro with Lion Server, and have set it to restart automatically every morning at 3am. When I arrive in the morning, I notice that it has not rebooted, usually because it states there are users connected. Is there a way to automatically disconnect users so that the machine will reboot.  No one is ACTIVELY connected at this time of the morning, but may still be logged in somewhere. I did see where I can log out users after a set period of time when using Workgroup Manager to manage a computer or computer group, but I don't use the server to manage all of the computers that have users log in.
    Thanks!

Well, it doesn't necessarily have to be each and every night, but it was for the sole purpose of preventing sluggishness. We had it set up before, as Snow Leopard Server and it would restart every night. It would occasionally be slow and need rebooting, however a manual reboot was not possible by most people in the store as they did not have credentials to screen share and restart it - which would result in holding down the power button to shut it down.
The server is used for the sole purpose of logging in about 50 users just so they can customize their experience, as well as saving items to their own home folders.  The store is closed during the night, and there is no reason anyone would be accessing it during the night.

  • Mac PRo with raid card shipped with drive not suitable for raid?

    Hi all,
I ordered a Mac Pro with raid card and a 1TB hard drive. The drive which came in the computer was WDC WD1001FALS which is not a hard drive rated for raid usage. On Western Digital's site they suggest using WD1002FBYS.
Is the model WD1001FALS the correct drive which Apple ships although one ordered the raid card?

The WD 640GB Blue, and WD 1TB Black are the only drive options for the mac pro; that's what you choose.
The RE3 (or FBYS) is not an option sold through apple. Buying the raid card, is not going to change the drive.
On whether to use the RE3 over the Blacks, it depends on how you will be using it. From what I've heard, the Blacks are enterprise drives themselves; basically with just a less robust firmware (no TLER). If you will have the drives on 24/7 in a raid 5, then yes, RE3 will probably be better. If not, I think the black will suffice; note the blacks are GREAT drives by themselves anyway.
The apple raid card can connect to both SATA and SAS drives internally, however most times people buying the raid card want to use it for SAS drives. There are a lot more cheaper and possibly a lot more stable options then apple's raid card if you are looking to use SATA drives.
    Check amug:
    http://www.amug.org/
A common problem with the apple raid card is the battery:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MA849Z/B?mco=NDc1ODczNw
Lastly about enterprise drives, truthfully I don't see the difference really. I have enterprise drives in a 8-drive raid5 config running 24/7 as a server. 2 drives died on me after about 4 months. To top it off, they died within 10 min of each other, crushing the raid to pieces. Granted they were Seagate ES.2's, it's understandable
The boot drive of the server is a stock desktop WD drive and running 24/7. It's been running for almost 4 years straight.

  • Problems with Mac Pro & ATI Radeon  1900XT

I conect 2 Apple 20"Cinema display to a Mac Pro with ATI Radeon 1900XT, and I only get one of the screens to work. The other indicates with the Led light switching in and out that it won't recognize the video signal. I have restarted the V RAM pressing RP Comand+Option and after the second tone of restart, it continues the same. If I disconect one, then the other switches on. Why does this happens?
Can it be because the CPU and the 2 screens are plugged to the same pluggin base?
    Please, help me!!!
and sorry if I have not explain it properly, as I am Spanish, and it is difficult to explain it in English.

  • Radeon X1900 and mac pro graphics problems

    Hi all,
i've a mac pro with two xeon cpu's (2,66GHz) in it. 2GB main memory and a radeon X1900 graphics card. on this mac i use bootcamp beta 1.4, installed the newest driver for this version from the apple support side. also i have updated the graphics FW to the newest version. so all things are on up to date.
my problem is the following: if I play some very graphics intensiv games like STALKER or BIOSHOCK (yes i use my mac for works and sometimes to play), it seems that the graphics card will be to hot. I get a lot of pixel errors. horiz. lines and after a while windows xp is freezeing. so I must reboot the maschine. also VPU recovery comes up.
I've tried several settings (800x600/1024x768/until maximum). 2-3 minutes the game is running well. after that my fans spin up like a plane, get the errors on the pixel side and the game crashes or windows xp is freezing.
i don't know any solution yet. can anyone help me? have some others the same problem?
    many thanks
    Andy

    Hi There,
I was having the exact same problem playing command and conquer 3 in Win XP. I'd play for about 5 minutes or so with the fans spinning at full speed (sounding like the mac was about to 'takeoff'), and then it would just crash.
I followed the advice here, took the graphics card out, clean the dust out and hey presto, the problem was fixed! My MacPro is about 6 months and i was surprised how much dust had got clogged up in there!

  • Mac Pro with X1900 XT graphics card EFI boot display

    Hi all,
I've got this problem with my mac pro with ATI Radeon X1900 XT - 1st DVI connected to the 23 inch apple display and the 2nd DVI connected to my optoma dlp projector.
My problem is that the EFI boot menu shows up on the 2nd DVI connection. So basically I see the boot menu only on the projector when it should have been on my apple display.
Can someone please help me figure this out. Can't seem to find any on google or anywhere else.
Thanks in advance for the help!

Sorry, I forgot to add that small detail..
I can switch both connections and it'll work for the mac part of the deal but the windows end cant switch screens - making the apple display the primary display on windows..
now it sounds like a "windows" issue doesnt it!?heh

  • Mac Pro with ATI Radeon HD2600, can't get Vista Aero to work

    Hi from Newbie
I have a Mac Pro with Vista bootcamp installed, ATI Radeon HD2600, 512 mb of video ram, and 8 gb's of RAM, but I can't get Vista Aero mode to work. The driver doesn't specify WDDM, could this be the problem? Can I find a compatible driver elsewhere?
    Thanks in advance.

You need to install drivers from ATI directly.
    http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html
And when upgrading drivers, it helps to use Driver Sweeper and follow some recommended steps:
    http://evga.com/forums/tm.asp?m=396474
(applies to any driver but written with Nvidia in mind)
Of course to get full benefit of RAM, and power of your system, you need 64-bit version.

  • Mac Pro with x1900xt  Screen keeps flashing to black???

    Hi,
I was just wondering if anyone else has had the problem, of your screen, going to black then coming back intermittingly. I just got my Mac Pro with an ati x1900xt and I'm connected to a Dell 30in screen. I have it connected to the left port nearest the side of the case. Has anyone else had this problem and got it fixed? I've tried everything, from switching cables, monitors, and I have updated all the software... can anyone help me here?
    Thank you.

    Mac Pro 3ghz ati1900 4gig ram 500gig HD   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I am having similar problems with my new Mac Pro 3GHz with ATI X1900 XT.
I have a Dell 2405FPW (24") as my primary monitor, and a Dell 2001FP (20") as my secondary monitor. Both are connected via DVI.
If I plug in the 24" into port 1 and the 20" into port 2, I see correct video on the 24", but a black screen on the 20". If I change resolution from 1600x1200 to 1280x1024 on the 20", I get video on the 20". I can then change resolution back to 1600x1200 and retain video on both monitors. However, if I turn the 20" monitor off, when I turn it back on, it is black again, and stays that way unless I do the resolution change again. Note that the monitor detects a signal, different from when there is no signal at all - it is getting a black picture, and that's what it's displaying. This happens with a fresh out of the box install of Mac OS X, as I did a clean install on another partition to troubleshoot it.
Now, here's where it gets interesting. If I swap the connections - 24" to port 2 and 20" to port 1, keeping the 24" with the menu bar, then I get video on both monitors. However, I get black picture on both monitors during the entire boot sequence and do not see video until the login window appears. I can turn the monitors off and on after that point and continue to retain video. So, that's the setup I'm using, even though it is not ideal to not be able to see anything before the login window.
On a possibly related note, if I start X11, the X11 server takes over the entire display, showing a gray checkerboard pattern as the background with no menu bar, no dock, nothing other than an xterm visible and accessible. If I command-Q, it will quit X11 and everything returns. It's like the X11 window manager is taking over and not merging with the Mac OS X desktop.
It seems like the ATI drivers and/or Mac Pro firmware and/or Mac OS X have some bugs to be worked out.
