No sleep after upgrading to a  radeon 9600 pro 256MB graphics card

I swapped my original radeon 9600 pro 64MB with a 9600 pro 256MB card and now my G5 dual 2.0 tower will not sleep. Should I download the 9600 pro drivers that are on the ATI support site, they only list these drivers for OSX 10.2, 10.3 and 10.4 and since I have 10.5 I am hesitant to do so. There seems to be a definite increase in graphic speed with the 256MB card and since I will be doing a lot of iphoto and imovie on this computer the upgrade would be a big help.

Can you find your model here? http://support.apple.com/specs/#powermac
Well, if you think you saw the PMU button near your RAM that would be it, just hold it down for a second or two.
Well, I'm not surprised that the PC is faster. You're running a very new OS on a very old machine. But Macs of any vintage are great, aren't they.
When you got your video card did you install the software from the disk that came with it?
One thing you might try if not sleeping is really bugging you would be to download and reapply the entire full 10.5.5 Combo Update. That has a way of correcting things when they've become corrupted.
It's pretty massive so if you're using a modem it would take quite awhile.

Edit and PS: Do you have your data backed up on a drive you can start up from? Like firewire or another internal? Here is a great app, free for it's basic job, that makes perfect copies of your system and everything on it.

  • ATI Radeon 9600 pro 256M graphics card

I had the above card in my G4 as an upgrade, recently the G4 died so I removed the card. I was wondering if this card would be useable in my quad pro to allow the use of a second monitor. It has dual avi ports on it so I thought it would ideal for a smaller secondary monitor.
Any help on this would be much appreciated.

    Thanks Kappy,
Any recommendations on an alternative card that might do the job (and not break the bank)
The monitor I want to connect has an avi connector.

  • ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB 8x Dual (DVI/DVI) (AGP) Video Card for PC/Mac

We want to be able to use our 30" cinema display from the G4 and was advised in a previous discussion to buy the ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB 8x Dual (DVI/DVI) (AGP) Video Card for PC/Mac. It doesn't seem to be available anywhere. Does anybody know of an alternate video card that's currently available that will get us there? (We had the display running from a G5 that quit / logic board failure).
    Many thanks,
    Philip

The Nvidia 7800GS is a flashed card, runs a 30" with ease.
BruinMacs on Ebay is a great place to get one, you support the guy who wrote the original ROM for these.
He doesn't seem to have any for sale right now, but if you email him, maybe he will list one.
There are also flashed X800s that work on your MDD and can run a 30". They are pricey but will offer dual DVI while the 7800GS is single DVI with VGA for second display.
There are also flashed 6600GT AGP cards which will work, but harder to find.
Any of the above 3 will run circles around a 9600.

  • Radeon 9600 Pro Mac & PC Card

    Hello,
I just got my Radeon 9600 Pro Mac & PC Card in the mail today.
I bummed to find that it did not come with a DVI to ADC adapter.
I have a apple 17" display that I would like to hook my new card up to.
I shopped around on the apple site's shop and found two products
    that may cure my situation.
One was a simple adapter cable for $29.99
The other was a bigger converter product for $99.99
    Which way should I go?

    Mitch,
If your monitor is one of the clear plastic generation types then the power comes through the ADC cable from your Mac. DVI connectors do not provide power, therefore the simple adapter cable probably won't work for you.
You will have to go with the converter for $99.99.

  • Getting the GPU temp on a Radeon Card, and is a Radeon X850 PRO 256MB PC card flashable for use in Mac G5?

I decided to post this as a new topic since it really didn't belong on the tail end of my X800 XT thread of woe...
Is there any program that can get the GPU temp of a Radeon video card on a Mac?  I have done quite a bit of looking online and have come up with nothing. Strange, since this is usually a concern for all computer owners..  I don't even care if it's unstable, beta, hack city.
The second part of this question is:  I have a PC AGP video card "Radeon X850 PRO 256MB", and I wanted to know if it is flashable to use in a Powermac G5.
The card looks a lot like the X800 XT, except for the chip on the underside of the card that says "ATI Rage Theater" on it.
Here is a link to a pic of the underside of the card that I found on PhotoBucket:
    http://media.photobucket.com/image/recent/dualamdmp/DSCF6296.jpg
    Here is the top side:
    http://s1238.photobucket.com/albums/ff489/dualamdmp/?action=view&current=DSCF629 2.jpg
In case my efforts completely strike out getting a video card with an ADC port (basically the X800 XT or X850 XT), I am starting to look for a reasonably priced DVI to ADC converter.
    Thanks!

Is there any program that can get the GPU temp of a Radeon video card on a Mac?
    No.
Radeon X850 PRO 256MB...I wanted to know if it is flashable to use in a Powermac G5.
Possibly. BUT, it won't output digital, which is what you need to use a DVI to ADC adapter.
All flashed Radeon X800/X850 will only output analog.
A flashed FireGL X3 , using a Mac Radeon X800XT ROM will output both ports digital, and one of those is also dual link DVI (in case one wants a 30" Cinema Display).
That's the only flashed X800 that outputs digital.
If you're going the adapter route, consider an OEM or a flashed Geforce 6800 GT or Ultra.
The Ultra actually out performs the X800XT in some areas, with the GT not far behind.
A flashed Geforce 6800 GT can be a real performance value, often times a bargain.

  • ATI RADEON 9600 PRO 256MB AGP VIDEO CARD PC/MAC

    This card is available from:
    https://www.directdial.com/100-435065.html
My X800 XT blew up my logic board.
This was the best 256MB card I could find.
They had 30 of these when I ordered today at $209.

That sounds attractive except for me, living in Canada.
The handling and brokerage fee charged by the US delivery service,
UPS or FEDEX, make the Canadian store's price more attractive.
Plus I ordered it Monday and get it today.
BTW stock is back to 29 as of today.

I have a MS-6309 motherboard. I have recently installed an ATi Radeon 9600 Pro 128MB graphics card and am having some problems. I am running Windows 98. I can't get Direct 3D and AGP Texture Acceleration (this is disabled) to work. I want to download the latest drivers for my motherboard but don't know which link to choose on the motherboard drivers page of the MSI web site.
    The problems that occur are:
    1) The screen freezes up
    2) The graphics on the screen go blurry
    3) Everything stops and the monitor switches off
I am sure this is a driver issue and not a hardware issue. Please can someone help me!

  • Radeon 9600 Pro and Westinghouse 19" Widescreen Mon.  1440 X 900 Possible?

I have a G4 MDD with a Radeon 9600 Pro, 256 Mb card with dual DVI outs. I just got two Westinghouse 19' widescreen monitors which have a max res of 1440 X 900. Problem is when I try to set the res of the two monitors in the Displays pane, there is no selection for 1440 x 900. In fact all the settings appear to be 4:3 aspect ratios..... The card seems to have enough juice to drive both monitors as they look fairly decent at a res that is close to the 1440 x 900 but the image is obviously stretched. How do I get a 1440 x 900 selection in my Display pane in System Preferences? Please tell me this res can be driven by this card......
    Thanks.

Problem solved.....I used a little shareware program called SwitchResX:

Fabulous little problem solver. You can set up custom resolutions of just about any dimension, although I only tested my needed resolution, and magically once you restart the machine, the resolutions are available in the Display preferences pane. If the display doesn't look right at first, i.e. shifted to the left or right, keep playing with it and perhaps switch back to a different resolution and then back to your custom res and all should be well. 75 Mhz as a refresh rate seemed to make my video card and the monitor happiest.
    Cheers.

  • Help! Blue Screen hangs on G5 after installing Radeon 9600 pro...

    Hi
I am having major problems with my G5, after working out that my old graphics card was knackered i bought a new ati radeon 9600 pro.
Every time i start up i get the apple logo then it hangs on a blue screen. I can get it to boot in safe mode and i've tried uninstalling the ati software and i've even re-installed OS X and wiped the disk to no avail.
I've also downloaded latest card drivers and looked for help on ati website but no real help there.
    I would appreciate any help.thanks

I just installed an ATI X800 XT and it does exactly the same thing. Even on a new system build. Ironically enough I just took out a Radeon 9600XT that worked fine. Have you found a solution yet? I think I'm going to try and reset my pram. I'll let you know what I find out.

  • Radeon 9600 Pro MAC/PC resolution problem

I am trying to use this card with a 30" Apple display and can only get 1280 x 800 resolution which is horrible as you could imagine. I have also load the most recent ATI drivers. I am running a G5 Dual 2.0 Ghz on Mac OS 10.4.11. Thanks in advance.

I have been having the Exact Same Problem. I have two ViewSonic VA903b Monitors and an ATI Radeon 9600 Pro PC&Mac Edition installed in my G5 PPC. I used to have the standard Nvidia card installed, but replaced it because I wanted a dual monitor setup. It's worked fine with no issues at all since. I recently reinstalled Leopard (up to date) on my mac and now it won't recognize any screen resolution other than 1280x800 which is not what I'm after at all. I have tried downloading the drivers from here:
    http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/macosx10-4x-3x-radeon.aspx
This does install the ATI Control Panel, but most, if not all of the options are grayed out and unavailable. I must also note that I am using two DVI>VGA Connectors for my Monitors. This was not a problem before I reinstalled Leopard, so I know that it must be a drivers issue- I hope. When I reinstalled Leopard, the Main Screen was all gray and nearly illegible, but I was able to perform a fresh install of the OS. I am wondering if the mac needs to have the ViewSonic Monitor plugged directly into the Card, as it was originally before upgrading to the ATI card? If this is true, I do not have the old card anymore. Any ideas?

  • 4-Port IOGear KVM (DVI, USB) and Radeon 9600 Pro (dual G5) Problem

I recently bought a 4-port KVM with DVI video and USB support for keyboard and mouse. I have the KVM hooked up to my dual processor G5 with DVI, to the ATI Radeon 9600 Pro video card in it. When I switch between my Windows Vista PC and my Mac (both running 85hz refresh rate and 1280x1024 resolution), the video is fine on the PC, but the Mac video is first initialized at 800x600 at 60hz. After about 3 seconds, it switches to 1280x1024 at 85hz, but this screws up my program views. I run Final Cut Express HD and DVD Studio Pro 2.0 and the windows in these programs are totally messed up. I have tried updating the drivers to the newest one from ATI, leaving the KVM on until Mac OS X Tiger is totally booted up to my desktop, before switching to one of my PCs, and updating the firmware on the KVM. Has anyone else had this problem? Any ideas to correct this problem? Thank you for your help!

  • 30" display and the Radeon 9600 pro Mac/PC

Okay so I posted this on another "Display" forum before I realized I probably should have posted it here. Sorry. Anyway:
I just hooked up my new 30" display to my new Radeon 9600 Pro that supposedly has dual-link DVI ports for driving a monitor such as this. However the resolution is stuck at 1280x800. I've tried both ports on the card just in case only one of them was a dual-link (I'm unclear on whether it's one or both). However neither one produces the proper resolution.
The instructions seem to be directed at PC peeps and so doesn't make any sense to me. It's talking about uninstalling and reinstalling drivers for the card which I am not aware of a Mac needing but what do I know?
Can anybody tell me what I'm missing?

Well, I tried logging into the forum last night to tell folks to nevermind my query but the server wouldn't let me in. All is now well. This is what happened:
After entering my question I was poring further through the nominal manual and saw something about drivers for the card. Well, this was the first time I'd swapped out a video card plus nowhere in what I'd read in researching the matter ahead of time ever did I see any reference to drivers. Well lo and behold I went to the AMG site and found drivers to download. Unfortunately they were supposed to be installed BEFORE I put in the new card so I took out the new one, put back in the old one, installed the driver, reinstalled the new one and SHAZZAM! it worked and I am running with stunning clarity at 2048...or whatever it is.
A friendly respondent alerted me to a "2" that is stamped somewhere on the face of the card. But I fortunately picked the right one without knowing it. The manual really is not clear as to whether one or both ports are dual-link and it says nothing about how to determine which one is.

  • Radeon 9600 Pro faster then 9600 XT?????

Is the Radeon 9600 Pro faster then 9600 XT? I want to upgrade my PowerMac G5. I have a 9600 XT (128MB) that came with my machine. It's hard to find cards for the G5 (the machines that are not PCI Express). I purchased the 9600 Pro for the Mac and PC (256MB), but I am not sure that this is a faster card. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks so much.

    Hi
For me the X800 XT would be the best upgrade in terms of performance and cost. The very last G5 models used PCI express for the graphics card rather than AGP, so in a sense the technology had already moved on before the Intel based Macs were even introduced.
It's nothing unusual though. The G3s use PCI and are limited because the technology moved to AGP. The early G4s use AGP 2x and are limited because the technology moved to AGP 4x (and some cards such as the 9600 won't work with AGP 2x). The later G4s use AGP 4x and are limited because the technology moved to AGP 8x Pro. Most G5s use AGP 8x Pro and are limited because the technology moved to PCI Express etc. I guess it's largely unavoidable if technology is to move forward, and in a sense welcome otherwise you'd have a G5 with the same graphics technology as a G3.
